NYM P MARTINEZ -R vs ATL J SMOLTZ -R
Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz face off as the Mets and Braves close out their weekend series in Atlanta. Martinez (0-0, 4.50 ERA) makes his second start of the season for the Mets after coming over from the World Series Champs Boston Red Sox in the off-season. Last year he went 16-9 with a 3.90 ERA in 33 starts. Overall, he allowed 99 runs on 193 hits with 26 homers, 61 walks and 227 K's in 217 innings. He pitched good enough to win in the season opener when he allowed three runs on three hits with one homer, two walks and 12 K's in 6.0 innings of work in an eventual 7-6 loss to the Reds. Smoltz (0-1, 32.40 ERA) posted a 0-1 record in 73 games and registered 44 saves in 2004. Overall, he allowed 25 runs on 75 hits with 8 HR's, 13 walks and 85 K's and has recorded 145 saves over the past three season. He will be making just his second start since June, 2001 and he hopes it turns out better than his first start last Tuesday, when he was hammered for seven runs on six hits with two walks, one homer and one strikeout in a career-short 1.2 innings in a 9-0 loss to the Marlins. All things considered, Pedro looks like a bargain today.
