  • Free Throws..... Opinions Please

Alright fellas, give me your honest opinion on this. Don't call me a racist, cause I'm not. People are people and should be given the respect they themselves deserve. Don't give me a racist answer cause that's not what I'm lookin' for. I simply want an honest answer to what I see as a valid question.

Why are Black basketball players such poor free throw shooters compared to White players or Chinese or Polish or Russian or Italian or whatever?
Somebody please explain this phenomina to me! Be honest, have you ever wagered on a team.... it's late in the game and the team you bet on is behind and needs to foul and hope for misses at the line. Have you ever watched such a game and said to yourself "no, don't foul the white guy"? Have you been on the other end of it w/ your wager on the team that is winning, knowing the other team is going to foul, and said to yourself, "no, don't foul the black guy he'll miss"?
If you took 200 college basketball players without knowing their name or what school they played for, 100 white and 100 black.... had them shoot 10 free throws apiece, who would you wager on w/ your hard earned money to shoot a higher percentage?

Am I the only person who notices this? Why is this? I don't understand. Is there a gene for free throws that has yet to be detected by human doctors and is linked to race? I find that hard to believe. Why? For crying out loud WHY?????????
Honest feedback please. If your racist, keep your comments to yourself!!!!! Happy Easter to all.

I think personally its the size of their hands and nothing to do with color. Look at Robinson on washington U he is black and has very small hands and is an amazing FT shooter..then look at a guy like Chris Kaman who is a tall white guy with big hands and is not a good FT shooter at all.
    IMO

        Dan,
Thanks for an honest reply. Actually makes a lot of sense and that glass may hold water.

          Backyard vs. Schoolyard

I have heard that the reason for the foul shooting disparity may be due to the accessability of courts to suburban kids versus that of inner city kids. It is much easy to practice shots in your driveway or in your backyard than having to "share" the ball with 7 or 9 other kids at the playground. This could explain the difference. All I know is when you need one or two to be made, the color doesn't matter...they all miss!

          Just a thought....

Hamilton is a machine and Calvin Murphy was one of the best ever (when he wasn't busy fathering kids). The playground theory makes sense but I don't think color has anything to do with it.

Reggie Miller, D Stoudamire, E Boykins, & C Billups are the top or among the top free throw shooters in the NBA. It may seem like that to you because usually you're trying to foul the worst free shooter on the other team late in games, & because there are more black players, it's more likely that that guy you're trying to foul is black & maybe a big forward or center. I don't think i've ever seen anyone intentionally trying to foul Reggie late in games during his career unless they absolutely had to. I have to agree with the suburban/playground theory. How many free throws do you think j j redick got to shoot with no one around?

hokie.....i think that color has nothing to do with it......certain white guys are good at it and certain black guys are good at it.......i would subscribe to a theory of practice and form......some guys practice that part of their game more.... i imagine shooting guards are the best free throw shooters...i would be more interested in seeing ft % by position rather than by color.....i think that may be a more telling statistic

IMO free throw shooting is like putting. Most players don't like practicing. I believe too many basketball players spend more time trying to dunk the ball than shooting 100 FTs
