    Thursday NCAA
Since 2001, #1 seeds are 12-1 SU in this round, and 10-3 vs spread (only loss was Indiana's 74-73 win vs Duke as 12.5-pt dog in '02). Last time a #1 seed was dog in this round was the Kenny Anderson game at the Superdome in '90, when Georgia Tech beat Michigan State in OT on disputed buzzer-beater, 81-80, as 3-pt favorite. All of which bodes well for Washington squad that is underrated, and should benefit from altitude, as they have tremendous depth and like to run all day.

Louisville is on 11-game win streak, winning 19 of last 20 games, and made everything they threw up in easy win over Georgia Tech. Both sides played tournament in November for extra games- this is by far, best game of this round, am surprised it isn't the late game. Top seed Washington won five in row, nine of last ten.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee coach Pearl once put Illinois on probation when another regime was coaching the Illini; his Panthers won 12 in row and 20 of 21, but lost by 29 vs Wisconsin, only Big 11 team they played. While we quote that #1's are 10-3 vs spread in this round the last five tournaments, #1 seeds as double digit faves in this round are just 2-7-1 vs spread in last ten tries, stat that goes back over a decade. I posted a selection on this game on bottom of this page.

West Virginia was 10-0 at one point this year, then had to have wins in Big East tourney just to get in Field of 65, now they're in Sweet 16, with odd 1-3-1 defense and gritty kids- both they and Texas Tech rallied from double digit deficits in second half Saturday, but West Virginia's last three wins are by 2,2 and in double OT. #6 seeds that get to this point, and face lower-seeded team have lost four of last five games, which favors the #7 seeded Mountaineers. Tough game to call.

Arizona won four of last five times they got to this point with last three wins by 8,10,17 pts. Favorites covered six of eight in this round last year, after being 7-9 the previous two years. Arizona allowed just 58 ppg last weekend, as they used zone to stifle UAB. Oklahoma State is veteran team that starts four seniors, many of whom are older than usual. #2 seeds covered five of last seven games in this round, but did better vs seeds lower than a #3, breaking even vs the #3 seeds.

    Thursday NIT game
Georgetown is on road for first time in NIT; they were 4-2 as big East road dog. South Carolina has yet to go on road, but NIT bigwigs probably glad to get team to New York that used to play on Frnak McGuire Court. Hoyas played boston U, Fullerton to this point, while Carolina has played stronger teams in UNLV, Miami. Georgetown beat Clemson by 15; Gamecocks lost to their archrivals by a point in OT.

    Friday NCAA

    NCAA Tips:
Illinois, -10.5-- Wisconsin-Milwaukee presses, but no college team passes like Illinois. Illini, playing pretty much at home in Chicago, will pressure Panther guards who will not be 23-45 from arc, like they were in last week's games. Coach Weber went to UWM; Panther coach Pearl once help put Illini on probation. Tonight is an Orange night. 20 webers on the Illini, -10.5.

Kentucky, -4-- Utah has the excellent big man, but UK has three 7-footers to throw at him, one of whom is 7-3; New Mexico gace Utes trouble because they threw tall people at him in bunches. This spread is just too low. 20 tubbysmiths on the Wildcats, -4.

    Game of the Day
Lakers @ Nuggets-- Last stand for fading Lakers to contend for playoff spot. Denver won four in row, 12 of last 13, and scored 119 ppg during current winning streak, with all four games going over. Lakers lost five of last six games. Kind of ironic that after events of last two years, Lakers getting sent packing by a team from Colorado. Last three LA games also went over total.

Elsewhere, Bobcats beat Orlando Monday night by five, 102-97, then gave up 70 in first half last night at home vs Suns, losing 120-105. Charlotte is 1-10 last 11 games, with five of last seven going over. Orlando lost 8 of 9.

Memphis lost for just third time in 11 games last time out have had three days off since that game; they won 89-84 in first meeting vs Nets on Dec 17. Last three Memphis games stayed under. Nets won, covered last five games, with thre eof last four going over the total.

Cavaliers 1-0 under Malone, 4-9 in last 13 overall, now head to Houston, where Rockets won seven of last nine games, beating Miami in last game Tuesday. Under 5-0 in last five Houston games. Rockets won 98-87 at Gund, in first meeting of season on Dec 29.

Utah ended nine-game losing streak when it pounded a nail in Lakers' coffin Tuesday; they just lost 96-95 to the Wiz Saturday, shooting 52.4% from floor, but blowing a 8-pt halftime lead. Wizards are 6-10 last 16 games; they lost by 29 Tuesday, at Denver.

Seattle won three in row and five of last six games; they face Portland team that stopped caring while ago; they're 1-12 in last 13 games, 0-6 in last six, 3-14 vs spread in last 17, with seven of last eight games staying under total. Teams split pair of meetings early in season.

Sacramento-Dallas used to be marquee game, but Kings broke up their team- they're 6-3 in last nine, but 2-4 vs spread in game following their last six wins. Dallas won fourth in row and sixth in last seven games vs Golden St last night; it was their first over in last six games.

Thursday List of 13, random thoughts...........
      13) Washington is third-round dog, despite being #1 seed; last team to be in this boat was Michigan State in '90, when Steve Smith-led Spartans lost to Kenny Anderson's Georgia Tech squad 81-80 in OT on Bourbon Street, as 3-point dog, on disputed three at buzzer, in game that led to all clocks having tenths of second added to them, in last minute of each half.

      12) Major league baseball teams tier their ticket prices with games with the more attractive visiting nines more expensive. If Barry Bonds sits out all year, do fans get rebates on Giant games?

      11) NFL Week 1 featured 4:15 game is Cowboys at San Diego; the Sunday night tilt will be Colts returning to Baltimore to face the Ravens.

      10) Brent Musberger came out strongly Sunday night, in favor of 20-year old age limit for NBA players. Interesting to note that Brent's brother is a prominent agent, with Phil Jackson one of his many clients.

      9) Do NBA owners realize that firing coaches with winning records makes the league look like a glorified AAU circuit? Silas was 34-30; fired. Flip Saunders was 58-24 last year; gone this year. The inmates are running the asylum, people.

      8) We're glad to report that old friend Craig Moore has signed on with Northwestern Wildcats for next season. The 6-4 guard from Lawrenceville Academy is a perfect fit for the Princeton-style system.

      7) There will be a WR drafted from Florida State on April 23, by name of Craphonso Thorpe. He is good player, but who the hell names their kid Craphonso?

      6) Spring training games are great to watch in early March, but get tedious at this time of month, as we get eager for the real thing. I watch the White Sox on dish every afternoon after work; some guy wearing #82 plays the last few innings at second base every day.

      5) With Mr Lewis Wolff (frat brother of Bud Selig) buying the A's, either the A's will get a new stadium in Oakland, or they'll be in Las Vegas, Sacramento or San Jose within five years.

      4) According to observers, umpires are making a concerted effort to call the low strike this spring. Will it carry over to the season? That is why we analyze umpires all summer.

      3) Fullerton at Georgetown NIT game was interesting Tuesday night, as Titans were down to eight players, with three of their top six out injured, and game being played in McDonough Gym, the Hoyas' tiny practice gym. With South Carolina beating UNLV, only way Hoyas get to NIT Final Four is if they beat Carolina in Columbia.

      2) Good idea by ESPN; for Players' Championship, ESPN Classic will televise every group as they come through the 17th hole, with the famous island green. Regular coverage begins at 11:30am.

      1) Wouldn't it be weird if Barry Bonds never played another game?
