This is a game that I was waiting and hoping that these 2 teams would matchup against one another. Its here and it goes off at 5:50 Eastern Time today; UAB vs Arizona -7 1/2
UAB came into this year's tourney with an at large bid. They return 8 players from last year's team that lost in the sweet 16 round to Kansas. They defeated this year's same Washington team in the opening round of last year's tourney 102-100, they knocked off Kentucky 76-75 in round 2 of last year's tourney and defeated a hot LSU team in this year's first round with a convincing 82-68 score. LSU had won 7 of their previous 8 games, their lone loss was by 1 pt to Kentucky.
Returning UAB players include;
1. 6'7 Forward Demario Eddins who is averaging 12.6 ppg along with 5 rpg. He has scored 10,10, 9, and 26 pts in the tourney over the past 2 seasons.
2. 6'6 Guard Donell Taylor who is averaging 15.9 ppg along with 4.3 rpg. He has scored 14,7, 13, and 9 pts in the tourney over the past 2 seasons.
3. 6'8 Forward Marques Lewis who is averaging 8.6 ppg along with 4.8 rpg. He has scored 8, 10, 4, and 10 pts in the tourney over the past 2 seasons.
4. Carldell Johnson 5'10 Guard who is averaging 4.7 ppg along with 3.7 rpg. He has scored 8,3, 9, and 9 pts in the tourney over the past 2 seasons.
5. 6'5 Guard Ronell Taylor (brother of Donell Taylor) who is averaging 12.3 ppg along with 3.7 rpg. He has scored 9,5, 7, and 12 pts in the tourney over the past 2 seasons.
6. 6'7 Forward Brandon Tobias who is averaging 2.4 ppg along with 1.8 rpg. Brandon plays in a substitute role averaging approximately 10 minutes per game.
7. Richard Jones 6'5 Guard who is averaging 4.2 ppg along with 1.5 rpg as a substitute.
8. Derrick Broom 6'5 Guard who is averaging 3.6 ppg along with 1.1 rpg as a substitute.
Now add into the mix, 6'2 Guard Marvett McDonald, a Southeastern Junior College transfer averaging 10.7 ppg along with 2.3 rpg and this is one solid experienced team. They have big excellent shooting guards which also gives UAB a strong outfront defense.
Arizona's Salim Stoudamire suffers from asthma and was worried about how his lungs would react to the thin air in Boise, Idaho throughout the first 2 rounds of the tourney. It wasn't far into the first half on Thursday's tilt against Utah State when he pulled himself out of the game. Stoudamire said his asthma was bothering him and he had to use his inhaler about 10 times during the game. I don't think he can stay 100% focused on his game with asthma problems.
I think UAB can win this game outright and in getting +7 1/2 points I see nothing but value in this play. I'm playing UAB +7 1/2 for 11 units to win 10 units.
Play it or fade it, the decision is yours!
