            Play-in game
Oakland opened up at -10, but game is down to -6; in first four of these play-in games, first two were decided by four points each, third game went OT, and Florida A&M won last year's game, as 4-pt underdog, so the favorite has been a bad idea in this game.

Oakland started season 0-7 because they played killer schedule (Xavier-Illinois-Marquette-Missouri-Texas A&M-Kansas State-Saint Louis-Akron); they waxed Bowling Green by 20 at home, and won its conference tournament at Oral Roberts team that beat Hoyas over in Hawaii by 18 pts, so the league is decent.

Alabama A&M lost by 19 at Tennessee State, lost to Fairfield (52-47), Georgia (71-54), Texas A&M (71-68) and UAB (100-68); teams from the SWAC have been in this game for third time in last four years- they lost previous two, but both were close. SWAC is the worst league in country, more often than not.

Game is in Dayton, so Oakland, which is in Michigan, should have fan support. Great opportunity for each team to get some notoriety and a win. This is a chance for these teams to be seen nationally; they are going to put their best foot forward and run. Public opinion has pounded the dog. Over might be a better play.

            NIT
The first round of NIT is the ultimate crapshoot; none of these teams want to be here, but they are, and who keeps playing is really tough to handicap.

Notre Dame lost its last three games, losing twice in its own gym, and losing to 3-15 Rutgers in its conference tourney. Irish only beat Harvard 66-59, Army by 19, so they're not a team that blows people out. Crusaders of Holy Cross are on ESPN for second time in last five days, so they have to be excited. Coach Willard had a 16-game win streak snapped at home by Bucknell in Patriot League final. Game means more to Holy Cross.

Miami won at Florida, but lost last three ACC games and five of last six; they're 9-2 outside of ACC, while Gamecocks are 8-3 outside of SEC. Keep in mind that ACC was much better than SEC this year. Carolina is also on 1-5 skid, with only win in OT at home vs Ole Miss. Both teams struggling mightily at this point.

Coach Chaney returns to Temple bench for a game in Castle Coliseum, where Hokies beat Duke, Maryland as they won last three home games. Temple was 3-2 in games Chaney missed. Virginia Tech might actually be fired up to be in this; they haven't had much postseason play in recent years. Temple is 4-7 outside of A-12, as they played another stupidly difficult schedule.

Missouri actually won six of last nine games to get over .500, so they could be NIT team; they beat Gonzaga, Indiana, Kansas. DePaul had three bad non-league Ls in December, so they can't be that disappointed, since they lost two close games to UAB late in season- they lost three of last four games, with all three losses by 4 or less points. Mizzou has edge in motivation here.

              Game of the Day
Jazz @ Cavaliers-- Utah lost last five games, losing ugly 64-62 game at Detroit Sunday; Mr Boozer's back to Cleveland game, as he stiffed the Cavaliers as they tried to make good by him last summer. Cavs won last two games after six-game losing skid- they won 84-71 at Utah Jan 15. Four of last five Cav games under total

Elsewhere, Lakers are 10-14 in last 24 games after they got waxed in DC last night, with Kobe shooting 6-22 in 95-81 loss. This is his annual return to Philly, where he grew up. 76ers lost seven of last 11 games, three of last four- five of their last seven games stayed under total.

Miami won last nine games, covered last eight; they beat Milwaukee by 39 last night and are 2-0 vs Knicks this year, winning by 8, then by six points in OT last meeting March 9, 116-110. Knicks won five of last seven games covered seven of their last ten.

Sonics-Bulls is rematch of Friday night's Chicago win at Seattle, 100-97. 11 of last 14 Seattle tilts stayed under total, with visitor winning six of last seven Sonic games. Bulls won four of last five home games, three of last four overall, with four of last five staying under.

Dallas went to Target Center and won 102-93 Sunday, dropping Wolves to 7-6 under McHale- six of their last seven games went over total. Mavericks won three of its last four games but are just 1-8 vs spread in their last 9 games, failing to cover last four at home.

Orlando lost last four games, allowing 104 ppg; they're 4-15 vs spread in last 19 games, but did beat Kings 13 days ago, 114-111 in Florida. Sacramento had a three-game win streak snapped by Houston in last game; they are 5-14-1 vs spread in their last twenty games.

                Just some info ...

Tuesday List of 13, a look at March Sadness......
                13) You've probably never heard of Ron Ganulin, but for last 14 years, he was a Division I basketball coach at St Francis (NY) in Brooklyn, where his record was 187-207. Not great, but tough place to coach. He had a 20-point second half lead in conference title game a few years ago, lost the game, and the Terriers haven't been the same since.

Ganulin is no stiff; he was on Jerry Tarkanian's staff at UNLV in the glory days of Rebel hoops, but he was fired last week, as St Francis chose "to go in another direction" as the political nitwits like to say.

This is the flip side of March Madness; for all the glory the winners get, losers get shunned, fired, replaced by flavor-of-the-week guys who promise greater glories. Whether they can deliver remains to be seen.

                12) Also sad to see Buzz Peterson fired by Tennessee yesterday; had chance to sit with him and chat during an AAU game last July. Excellent guy, good coach. Men's job at Tennessee is tough place to win.

                11) Bummed as I am about Buzz getting fired, if Vols' powers-that-be are serious about going head-to-head with bitter rival Kentucky, they need to hire coach at UAB, Mike Anderson, who beat Kentucky in NCAA second round last season.

                10) Pete Gillen also got boot at Virginia; they have a new arena getting built, and needed to sell both luxury boxes and season tickets. Losing doesn't help.

                9) When Dick Vitale was coaching the Pistons, he once cut a player named Al Skinner, the BC coach.

                8) Illinois has won 32 NCAA games, the most of any school that hasn't won a championship.

                7) Plaxico Burress and Tom Coughlin would not have worked, not ever. Burress left lot of money on table, but he saved lot of people a lot of trouble.

                6) Bob Knight's last Sweet 16? 1994. This team is his best chance to get back in quite a while.

                5) Geniuses who program at ESPN have given hoop junkies a fix at midnight Thursday, after NCAA games are over, when they show the Arizona St-UNLV NIT game from Vegas. Good move.

                4) The NCAA tournament show on CSTV, one of my new favorite TV channels, is better than ESPN's, with Seth Greenberg and Matt Doherty. Moves better, has more guests and less agendas.

                3) No #5 seed has ever won NCAA title. Kansas was a #6 seed seed when they won the '88 title.

                2) Donyell Marshall of the Raptors was 12 for 19 on 3-pointers Sunday, in game where he scored just one two-point basket, and didn't take foul shot in win over the 76ers. Strange game; clips I saw had him taking open shot after open shot.

                1) A plea to directors of TV games; please show the game. If the clock is running, show the ball. Always show the ball, for that matter; no showing people with faces painted in the stands. Please?
