              Dr. Bob

Dr. Bob posted free on his home page. He went 0-7 yesterday.

Saturday Daytime Best Bets and Opinions
              ***St. Louis 57 MARQUETTE 55
St. Louis has gone more than a month without losing to the pointspread (7-0 ATS) and they qualify in a very strong 69-13 ATS situation that plays on losing teams on a pointspread run (that angle is 9-2 ATS this season, including 6-0 ATS recently). Marquette will be playing the rest of the season without one of the most valuable players in the nation, as pointguard Travis Diener is now lost for the rest of the season after breaking his hand in practice last week. Diener not only leads the Eagles in scoring at 19.7 points per game, but he’s among the nation’s leaders in assists at 7.0 apg and is their best perimeter defender (1.3 steals per game). Marquette managed to beat St. Louis without Diener earlier this season and they have played pretty well the last two games without him, but overall the Eagles have played at an average of 6 points worse than their season average in the 5 games Diener has missed this season. I calculate Diener’s value at 4 ½ points mathematically and my adjusted ratings favor Marquette by only 6 ½ points in this game. I’ll take an improving St. Louis team in a very good situation at +5 points or more and make the Billikens a 3-Star at +6 points or higher.

Downgrade St. Louis to a 2-Star Best Bet if they are an underdog of less than 6 points (pass if the line is less than +5).

              **Texas A&M (-10 points or less) 76 BAYLOR 59
Texas A&M coach Billy Gillispie doesn’t take any game for granted and his teams at UTEP and now at A&M have 21-5-2 ATS record as a favorite (20-2-2 ATS as a favorite of 12 points or less), including 4-0 ATS as a road favorite. Gillispie’s teams are also 21-2-1 ATS in their last 24 lined games against teams with a win percentage of .667 or less as long as they’re not favored by more than 12 points (11-0 ATS against teams at .500 or worse). Aside for Gillispie’s habit of beating up on the teams that he is supposed to beat, the Aggies apply to a 123-47-6 ATS road favorite situation and A&M can’t afford to let up in any game if they want solidify their NCAA Tournament hopes. My ratings, using all conference games for both teams, favors the Aggies by 10 ½ points even if I use a home court advantage of 6 points – which is nearly 2 points higher than normal since Baylor has played better at home while Texas A&M hasn’t played as well on the road. The next worst team in the Big 12, aside from Baylor, is Colorado and the Aggies just beat the Buffaloes by 15 points in Boulder a couple of weeks ago, so they should be able to win by double-digits in this game. I’ll lay 10 points or less with Texas A&M in a 2-Star Best Bet.

              WISCONSIN (-18) 73 Purdue 49
Wisconsin is a 2-Star Best Bet if the line goes down to -17 points or less.

***MISSISSIPPI STATE (-4 points or less) 75 Alabama 64
Mississippi State was without second leading scorer Winsome Frazier when they visited Alabama and were throttled 49-98 by the Tide. Things are likely to be very different here in Starkville, where the Bulldogs are 30-19-4 ATS in conference home games under coach Rick Stansbury. Teams that lose by 40 points or more are a very good 42-21 ATS in the same-season rematch over the last 16 years and there have been some amazing reversals in particular this season in the 3 previous games that qualified (Oregon State +7 1/2 by 17 points over Washington, Central Michigan +10 beating Western Michigan 84-74, and Marquette +7 easily covering against Louisville). Miss State also applies to a very strong 53-15-1 ATS last home game revenge situation as long as they are not favored by more than 4 points. Alabama, meanwhile, is coming off of a resounding 94-53 last home game celebration against Auburn and teams that have an easy time against a bad team on senior night at home tend to fall flat on the road in their next game. The Tide apply to a negative 33-79-2 ATS situation that is based on that premise and that angle applies as long as Bama is not an underdog of more than 3 points. Alabama is also much better at home in coach Gottfried’s 7 seasons (50-33 ATS) than they’ve been on the road (25-40-2 ATS) and Mississippi State’s home game ratings against Alabama’s road game ratings yield a line of Bulldogs by 6 ½ points. Using all games (with Roberts and Frazier in the lineup for Miss State), with an appropriately adjusted home court edge, I favor Mississippi State by 4 points in this game. This play gets even better if the line goes down to -2, the number at which a 59-17-3 ATS situation would also apply to Mississippi State. I’ll lay 4 points or less with Mississippi State and I’d make them a 4-Star at -2 or better.

Upgrade Mississippi State to a 4-Star Best Bet if they are -2 or better.
