Memphis, Tennessee, February 14, 2005 —The Memphis Grizzlies are rewarding students from the Memphis City Schools, Shelby County Schools and Desoto County Schools who competed in the five-week Grizzlies Reading Challenge by hosting a special Read to Achieve Celebration, presented by International Paper, on Tuesday, March 1 from 10 to 11 a.m. at FedExForum.

The Grizzlies Read to Achieve Celebration will celebrate the achievements of elementary school students in grades one through four who competed in the Grizzlies Reading Challenge, which ran from January 10 - February 11. The Grizzlies Reading Challenge encouraged students to read daily outside of their classroom. One class from each grade level per school that read the most minutes during the program earned the reward of being able to participate in the Read to Achieve Celebration on March 1.

“Together with the Memphis City Schools, Shelby County and Desoto County Schools, we are teaming up to improve the education for young students throughout the Mid-South,” said Grizzlies President of Business Operations Andy Dolich. “Through reading, we can encourage young children to explore their dreams while supporting their educational growth.”

The Read to Achieve Celebration will feature Memphis Grizzlies All-Star Reading Team members Pau Gasol, Lorenzen Wright, Shane Battier, Dahntay Jones and Mike Miller reading and meeting with winners from each school. The celebration event will also include on-court games with Grizz and dance team members, prizes for schools with the most minutes read, and one lucky student will win a new home computer system sponsored by Systems Technology.

"The Memphis Grizzlies share the district’s passion about academic achievement in our schools and jointly recognize that literacy is key to learning,” said Dr. Carol Johnson, superintendent, Memphis City Schools.

Betsy Landers, Tennessee PTA President added, “Reading is our first and most basic educational process. A child who does not read at or above grade level by the end of third grade must endure years in an educational system that uses reading as its primary delivery system. Together with parents, the Grizzlies are helping to make a difference by making reading a habit, and something fun to do, every day.”

This is the third year for the Grizzlies Reading Challenge, with over 80 Memphis, Shelby County and Desoto County schools participating in the program.

Following the Read to Achieve Celebration, the Grizzlies will host their first-ever weekday afternoon game against the Golden State Warriors at 1 p.m. Students who participate in the Read to Achieve Celebration event are invited to stay for the game free of charge. Fans of all ages are encouraged to join in the fun by having lunch with the Grizzlies. It’s a Time Warner Tuesday Pepsi Value game, so fans can purchase a ticket, hotdog and Pepsi starting at just $15. All kids in attendance will receive a James Posey growth chart sponsored by Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
