There is some history behind that saying..will keep it short
a year ago i was in Yankee Stadium watching a game
Yanks were down 6-1 or something like that, and the Rangers had bases loaded and they hit into a double play - - hence the inning ended 6-1 - - - Yanks come back to win it 10-9 in extra innings - - -and i was so happy cause i had 4 k on the game
after the game, i met Nick Johnsos in the subway and i thanks him (cause he had a big 8th inning walk), then he explained to me that the Rangers had them on the ropes when it was 6-1, but were unable to give them the knock-out punch
Moral of the story - - a Knock-Out Punch in baseball occurs when your team is up 3-5 runs, and then they have one more monster inning to extend the lead to around 7-8
THATS THE KNOCK-OUT
Tigers had that knock-out punch in the 8th this afternoon
