    Tuesday's Tip Sheet
    February 1, 2005

    **Chicago at New Jersey**
-- Chicago (22-20 SU, 25-17 ATS) had its five-game winning streak snapped Saturday as a seven-point home favorite against Boston, 101-97.

-- The Bulls have been on fire, going 12-2 SU and 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games.

-- Chicago is averaging 103.2 points per game in its last five games, helping the ‘over’ go 5-0.

-- Scott Skiles team has been inconsistent on the road, going 7-10 SU and 11-6 ATS.

-- The ‘under’ is 25-17 on the season, but the ‘over’ is 10-7 away from home.

-- Chicago has dropped five straight games both SU and ATS to New Jersey, including two tilts this season.

-- After this game, the Bulls travel to Miami on Saturday.

-- New Jersey (18-26 SU, 24-19 ATS) concluded its five-game West Coast swing Friday, which saw the Nets go 3-2 both SU and ATS, including three straight wins and ****** to close the trip.

    - Vince Carter is starting to show his talent, averaging 26.4 PPG in his last five contests.

-- Lawrence Frank’s team will be playing its fifth home game in the month of January on Tuesday. The team is 3-1 both SU and ATS in its previous four tilts at the Continental Airlines Arena.

-- The Nets are 9-9 SU and 8-10 ATS at home, while the ‘under’ has gone 10-8.

-- New Jersey has gone 2-0 both SU and ATS versus Chicago this year, including an 84-80 victory on Dec. 28 as a three-point road underdog. The ‘over/under’ is 1-1.

-- This will be the first of back-to-back games for New Jersey before traveling to Boston on Wednesday.

    **Miami at Dallas**

-- Miami (33-13, 22-21 ATS) won its third straight game Sunday as a six-point home favorite against Houston, 104-95.

-- The Heat are 3-0 ATS during this run and the ‘over’ has cashed three consecutive times as well.

-- Stan Van Gundy’s team is drilling 48.1 percent of their shots from the field, ranked first in the league.

-- However, the club is only posting 66.7 percent from the free throw line, which is second worst in the league. Shaquille O’Neal’s 45.9 percent is a major part of the poor effort.

-- Miami is an impressive 16-18 SU and 13-10 ATS on the road.

-- The Heat are only 10-9 SU versus the Western Conference.

-- Miami will be looking to avenge a 113-93 loss to Dallas on Nov. 11 as a 6 1/2-point home favorite. The combined 206 points jumped ‘over’ the closing total of 198.

-- After this tilt, Miami hosts Cleveland on Thursday.

-- Dallas (28-14 SU, 23-18 ATS) is off an embarrassing loss Saturday after falling to Philadelphia 93-89 as a 13 1/2-point home favorite. The Sixers won despite not having the services of All Star Allen Iverson.

-- The Mavericks shot 37 percent from the field, helping the combined 182 points go ‘under’ the closing total of 198.

-- The ‘under’ has cashed in four straight contests and seven of the last nine games.
-- Despite losing at home over the weekend, the Mavs have won eight of their last 10 at American Airlines Center.

-- Dallas is 16-8 SU and 12-11 ATS at American Airlines Center.

-- This will be the first of back-to-back tilts for the Mavs before heading to New Orleans on Tuesday.

    **Portland at L.A. Lakers**
-- Portland (17-25 SU, 19-23 ATS) is off a win Friday as a three-point home favorite against the L.A. Clippers, 90-86. The combined 176 points fell ‘under’ the closing total of 188, helping it go ‘under’ for the third time in four games.

-- Maurice Cheeks’ squad is 1-7 SU and 4-4 ATS in its last eight road games.

-- Cheeks bumped heads with forward Darius Miles before Friday’s victory over the Clips. Miles was suspended for two games due to conduct detrimental to the team. Miles is “out” for Tuesday’s game.
-- Portland has struggled on the road, going 7-16 SU and 11-12 ATS. The team is allowing 95 PPG away from home, helping the ‘over’ go 13-9.
-- Last season, the Blazers and Lakers split the four-game season series, but Portland covered all four meetings. The ‘over/under’ was 2-2.

-- After this tip, Portland will open a four-game homestand against Denver on Wednesday.

-- Los Angeles (23-19 SU, 19-21 ATS) dropped Charlotte Sunday 101-90 as an 8 1/2-point home favorite. The combined 191 points went ‘under’ the closing total of 195.

-- The Lakers continue to play without All Star Kobe Bryant (ankle), who is expected to be out until mid-February.

-- L.A. has gone 5-4 both SU and ATS since losing Bryant from the starting lineup. The ‘over’ has gone 5-4 as well.
-- The Lakers have held serve at home this season, going 16-9 SU and 13-11 ATS.
-- Following this game, the Lakers will host San Antonio on Thursday.

Chicago (see above) has been a serious tare and is bound for the playoffs for the first time since Michael Jordan wore the Black and Red. If you missed the winning and covering wagon, then don’t be so quick to hop on. The Bulls face a brutal five-game road set this week, which features games against Miami, Dallas, Houston and Minnesota. I forgot to mention Tuesday’s opponent, New Jersey, who has won three straight and starting to roll as well.

The Atlantic Division is the only division in pro basketball to see all five teams with a losing record. It’s also the most competitive group amongst the six divisions. That’s right only 3 ½ games separate first-place Boston (21-23) from the cellar dwellers in Toronto (18-27).

Philadelphia, New York and New Jersey are smack in the middle and all could be looked at as underachieving ball clubs. The Sixers (Iverson) and Nets (Jefferson) have both suffered through injuries, while the Knicks are playing under their second coach and have been rumored to get a third real soon.

Some might argue that any of the five can capture the division, which would most likely be the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. Can you imagine that the third seed in the East could have a losing record in the playoffs? Be careful what you wish for.
