I got one of those things in the mail from Reverend Ike, mail him $20 and a green miracle cloth and miraculous wonders will happen in your life.... people with decadent bad habits like drinking, gambling, using narcotics can achieve salvation, got me wondering..... Is what we do, gambling, bad, immoral, evil, sinful? As a Jewish man I wonder, is it the kind of thing Catholics have to go to confession for, do we get sent to hell for it? I feel that if something brings pleasure to you and doesn't hurt anybody then go for it...... if you want to drink, blow a blunt, get your rocks off with a hooker, than what the fuck's wrong with that as long as no harm is done? Is gambling bad, does it destroy lives and hurt society's moral fabric bla bla bla....... Some of us make good money which i'm sure you call your CPA immediately and discuss it with him... How do you guys feel about it? Is gambling harmless fun, an enjoyable hobby, where you make a few bucks here and lose a few there but don't harm anyone, or is it one of the deadly sins, something that good decent people would never do, something that you get sent straight to hell for? How do you guys reconcile your love of the game with your religious and moral beliefs???? Personally I think it's a choice I make, I have fun doing it even if i lose, i absolutely love the comeraderie of this board and the feedback i give and receive; i wish i hadn't lost as much as i had but that makes me want to learn more and keep trying to make it back, and if it sends me to hell, what the fuck the devil already has a luxury suite reserved for me whether or not I gamble... but my Mother would absolutely freak out and be devastated if she found out so i have to keep it a secret, I do feel bad about that..... Any thoughts???

*note to Gary*
Please do not post anything like this about jerking off. You have just lowered a guilt trip on me about all my hobbies but one. I beg you to stay away from that one so I could have at least one thing.
Thanks

BC - it has nothing to do with gambling, it's the unsolved serial killings in Eastern Long Island I'm worried about...... Seriously, I try to be a good, unselfish person, i'm hoping the drugs, indiscriminate sex and debauchery, and teeny little rap sheet won't count against me.....
RWall - it was between the 2 subjects..... if i can combine going to bed earlier with your hobby, i'd be better off...
Warrior - that's an interesting e-mail address... get mine from BC"That ain't working, that's the way you do it... get your money for nothing and your picks for free"

To get off the subject a little bit, I just got through reading the best selling book, The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren.
Although I like to kid around, I have a real serious side to me. and above book gives an interesting different perspective on life, oned wiith which I agree I do agree with basic tenet of book, that there is a reason for all of us to be on earth. Being Jewish, I don't believe all of it(about Jesus being the Savior)but found most of the book goes along with my thinking that God has a meaningful purpose for our existence for all of us on this earth.
It is easy reading and is divided into 40 chapters, each about 4 pages long;I simply read one chapter a night.
No the book doesn't pick winners but instead tries to show how YOU can be a winner in the Hereafter.
ps Personally I don't think God cares if you gamble or not as long as you don't hurt other people;as a matter of fact, I personally believe that gambling, the losing that goes along with it and the punishment endured is actually part of the plan for some(not all) by God, which in the long run will actually make the person better in eternity(yeah I know that is stretching it and/or sounds like a rationalization but that is how I see it).
ps One thing that disturbed me is that the word Jewish is not mentioned ONCE in the entire book.
I actually emailed the author about a week ago to find out what happens to those who are Jewish and don't believe in Christ as the savior and yet who live a good life;are they damned to Hell? As yet I have not received a response;I don't think he has an answer to that other than to say perhaps jus to do what the book says.Last edited by savage1; 02-01-2005, 01:31 PM.

This is a great topic. I dont think it's easily answered by any of us. I believe that conscience has a lot to do with how an activity is evaluated. For example, if someone that believes in God is betting every night and feeling guilty about it every night, it's hard to ignore the fact that that person is doing something they shouldnt. But, like most of us, if we consider it a harmless activity, I dont think you have to over-analyze and decide if you shouldnt be doing something you have enjoyed for years. If one is a Christian, all you need to worry about is your relationship with God.
Savage,
I have read that book and found it very refreshing and energizing. However, I am not Jewish so our takes on it are probably very different. If Rick Warren ever responds to you, i want to hear what he says.Everybody dies, but not everyone lives.
