San Diego has plenty of offensive talent and they opened the season
with a great effort in an 11 point loss as a 24 1/2 point dog at
Arizona, holding the Wildcats to 39% shooting. However, the Toreros
began to relax too much on the defensive end of the floor in their
next 5 games against Division 1-A competition, allowing over 50% FG
in those games. Coach Brad Holland has his team working on defense
again and the Toreros have reeled off 4 consecutive wins and spread
wins in which they've allowed just 42% shooting. That streak is
likely to continue, as San Diego applies to an 81-32-4 ATS home
momentum situation that is an incredible 35-2 ATS in the first half
of the season. Holland's players are discovering that winning is fun
and that it takes defensive effort to win, so I expect the solid
defense to continue and the Toreros can outplay the Bluejays on the
offensive side of the floor. My ratings, which are based on the
entire season, favor Creighton by 2 points, but the situation is
strong enough to give up line value and if San Diego plays the way
they've played in their last 4 games then they'd have a 70% chance to
win this game. Creighton is just 6-20 ATS the last few years after a
conference victory, and they might not take this game too seriously
after beating a young San Diego team 79-44 last November. I'll lay 2
points or less with the Toreros.

Downgrade San Diego to a 2-Star Best Bet if they become a favorite
of more than 1 point.

Pass on San Diego if they are favored by more than 2 points.
