I realize that this should probably be put in another forum, but I want everyone to see it , hopefully answer it,and in any event its late at night, so what the heck.
My comment/question is this:
In this day and age because of the internet and the widespread general dissemination of information including gambling, we all know that in addition to gamblers like us, many players, both college and professional who participate in sporting events especially basketball and football, are aware of the pointspread and over/under.
Although no one knows for sure how many playerss actually are aware of the pointspread/total prior to a game in which they participate, I thought it would be interesting to speculate on the issue.
Here are my questions:
1) What percentage of college and pro players do you think are aware of the pointspread/total involving THEIR own games?
2) What percent of the players who are aware of the pointspread/total cited in #1 do you think would deliberately do something in their game to influence the outcome of either?
3) Lets break the percentages down: what percentage of PRO players who are aware of the pointspread/total in their own game do you think would do something to influence the outcome and then the same question for college players who are aware of the pointspread/total.(this doesn't mean every game-just on occasion).
4) Last question-in your gambling experience is there any player and/or team either on the professional or collegiate level who you especially suspect of trying to influence the spread/total?
My opinion (and lets face it no one's guess is better than anyone's elses) are trhese:
1) I think about 65% or so are aware of the spread/total.
2) I personally would say around 25 to as high as 30% of players,WHO ARE OF THE POINTSPREAD IN THEIR GAME have at some time in their career tried to influence the pointspread or total outcome.
3) I would say in general that the percentages of players aware of the pointspread who would try to manipulate the spread or total sometime might be 30-35% in colleges and 25-30% in the pros.
4) Anyone who has read my posts knows that I believe that over the past few years the Lakers have been guilty of what I describe.
Remember if you choose to answer my poll that the percentages I am curious about are only for the players on a team who KNOW the pointspread in advance and NOT for all the entire team;in other words if you think 50% of players know the pointspread/total prior to the game what percentage of THEM(the 50%) would act on it.
Sorry for the long post but I would love all opinions on this matter.
In re-reading my post, I think some of it needs clarification.
When I ask what percentages of players who are aware of the spread have acted on it some time in their careers, it doesn't have to be something illegal, i.e. they were paid by a bookie or bettor to do it.
It could be for example a player aware of the spread on a basketball team favored by 26 points and leading by say 25 with 30 seconds to play who rather than running the clock out makes an easy layup to cover the spread to help out one of his buddies who he knew bet on his team to cover.
Perhaps some of you have even played on teams and can comment from personal experience.
