Steele's Power Sweep Writeup of Hawaii Bowl
This will be the first meeting between these two teams. UAB didn't even have a football team in 1991 and in 1995, when HC Watson Brown left Oklahoma as their OC to take the HC job for the Blazers, they had only filled half of their allotted scholarships. Five years ago they entered CUSA and in 2000 & '01 they were bowl eligible, but due to the newness of the program, were overlooked. Brown was in 4 bowl games as an ass't (2 with Jackie Sherrill at Miss St and 2 with Gary Gibbs at Oklahoma) and went 1-3 SU & ATS. UAB played the #75 toughest schedule while Hawaii played the #92 toughest. The Blazers played 4 bowl teams TY and went 2-2 SU & ATS but were outgained 410-309 while being outscored 29-23. UH played 3 bowl teams on the road this year and went 0-3 SU & ATS while being outscored by an avg of 63-12. They did, however, beat teams with bowl caliber talent in Northwestern and Mich St in the final 2 weeks. UAB is very excited about being in their first bowl but with the trip off the mainland they won't have a large contingent of fans making the journey. This is a home game for Hawaii, who plays on art turf. UAB plays on grass and is 3-4 ATS on turf. UAB is a relatively young team with only 8 seniors (3 off, 5 def) while Hawaii has 10 seniors (5 on each side of the ball). This will be Hawaii's 3rd straight appearance in the Hawaii Bowl, and also the 3rd consecutive meeting with a CUSA opp. The L/2 Hawaii Bowls UH split SU (0-2 ATS). In '02 they lost 36-28 to Tulane as a 14 pt fav, and in '03 the Warriors won 54-48 vs Houston in 3 OT's as a 10' pt fav. Hawaii has had a much more potent offense at home avg 43 ppg and 473 ypg vs 17 ppg and 345 ypg away. UH is 7-1 SU, and 6-2 ATS in Aloha Stadium TY. Hawaii is 2-1 SU and 1-2 ATS under HC June Jones in bowl games. Hawaii was 4-2 ATS as a home favorite TY while UAB went 2-4 ATS on the road dropping the last 3.
Hawaii has our #40 offense which is led by 1st Tm WAC Sr QB Timmy Chang who avg 321 ypg (59%) with a 34-13 ratio. Chang has been the sole catalyst for this team which won its L/3 games (SU & ATS) including 2 vs Big 10 opponents to get to a bowl. Chang is the NCAA's career passing leader playing in his final game. The Warriors have two solid RB's in Michael Brewster with 662 yds (6.2) and West Keliikipi (280 lb power back) with 309 yds (4.7) and both had 6 TD's a piece. Hawaii's receivers dominate the top of the NCAA's receiving leaders including 1st Tm WAC Chad Owens who has 94 rec (12.5) and 15 TD's. Owens has been one of the best receivers in the NCAA TY ranking #4 in rec per game (7.83), #7 in ttl rec yds with 1,176 and #9 in rec ypg (98). WR Jason Rivers has 69 rec (12.0) and Britton Komine has 49 rec (15.2). The UH O-line avg 6-2 285 with no seniors and have been able to hold their own only allowing 16 sks (2.7%) TY providing Chang plenty of time in the pocket. They also paved the way for 4.7 ypc rushing. Hawaii has had their troubles on defense TY with many of their starters inj'd and are ranked #113. The D has allowed an avg 38 ppg and 479 ypg TY but only 29 ppg at home. The D-line avg 6-3 281 with 2 seniors and have recorded 27 sks. They are led by Jr DE Melila Purcell with 69 tkls and 6 sks (#1 on team), and DE Kila Kamakawiwo'ole with 46 tkls, 8.5 tfl and 1 int. LB Watson Ho'ohuli is the #2 tackler with 74 (9 tfl). Their best LB is Ikaika Curnan who is now healthy after missing 4 full games and being far from 100% during the year. The secondary is their strength with 1st Tm WAC CB Abraham Elimimian who has 58 tkls, 5 int, and 9 pbu. SS Leonard Peters is #1 with 111 tkls, 4 int and 6 tfl. UH ranks #69 in our pass D rankings allowing a respectable 56% with a 19-13 ratio.
UAB struggled in 2003 avg just 20.4 ppg with then soph QB Darrell Hackney throwing for 237 ypg (just 51%) with a 9-6 ratio but he missed the final 4 games with injury. This year he is avg 241 ypg (55%) with a much improved 24-7 ratio. RB Dan Burks is a duel threat with 825 rush yds (5.5) and 12 rec (11.7). His running mate is soph Corey White who has 536 yds (5.5) and 8 TD's. Hackney's favorite target is 1st Tm CUSA soph WR Roddy White who has 65 rec (20.6!!) with 13 TD's & is 2nd in NCAA in rec yds and ypg. The OL has NFL size avg 6-4 313 and is led by 1st Tm CUSA LG Andy Galloway. The front wall only opened holes for 4.0 ypc while allowing 32 sacks and they are young (1 Sr, 2 Jr, 2 So). They did avg 30 ppg TY which is a huge improvement over LY's squad and finished with our #49 offense. The DL avg 6-3 281 and is young with 1 Sr starter, a couple of soph's and a Jr. They are led by 1st Tm CUSA soph Larry McSwain who has 54 tkls & 13 sks (#4 in NCAA). DT Shamar Abrams has 49 tkls and 2 sks. 1st Tm CUSA LB Zac Woodfin has 92 tkls & 11 tfl. He leads our #71 def allowing just 3.8 ypc rush with Nigel Eldridge (76 tkls) and Gaylon Black (8 tfl) rounding out the group. The secondary has been plagued with injuries and had just 1 player starting every game in CB Bobby Keyes (53 tkls, 7 pbu). This is a young UAB stop unit starting 4 soph's and they have our #91 pass D allowing 258 ypg (59%) with a 19-9 ratio.
Hawaii comes in with our #91 special teams unit. Owens (2nd Tm WAC as ret specialist) leads UH in PR's with 31 (14.2) and 4 TD's and a #14 NCAA ranking. Jason Ferguson has 32 KR's (21.2) on the year. Kurt Milne has 50 P's (39.7 ypp) with a 30.3 net & 13 inside the 20. K Justin Ayat has hit 10 of 14 FG's (5-6 40+) with a long of 56. The coverage units are poor allowing 10.9 on PR's and 25.6 on KR's. UAB has our #32 ranked special teams unit and is led by K Nick Hayes who has hit 11 of 15 (0-4 40+) with a long of 38. P Parker Mullins has 55 P's (40.3 ypp) with a 35.0 net and 17 inside the 20. 2nd Tm CUSA KR Reggie Lindsey avg'd a respectable 24.7 ypr and he also fields punts where he avg'd 10.9 with 1 TD. The KR & PR coverage are fine allowing just 18.6 and 10.3 respectively. UAB has better coverage on kicks and net punting but Hawaii is more explosive in the return game and has the better kicker.
Most coaches would use the Hawaii Bowl as a nice vacation but Watson Brown said it's a great recruiting opportunity and wants to take advantage of that. UAB will be excited to be here in their first bowl ever and they have one of the best QB's you've never heard of in Darrell Hackney who is 6-2 235 and strong. He reminds you of Steve McNair as he is a good passer and dangerous runner. UAB has the large defensive edge here and will be motivated as a dog. UH finally has a healthy D and while they allowed 41 and 38 pts in their L/2 games it was vs some quality Big 10 offenses. Winning their final 3 to get to a bowl was a great recovery after being whipped at Fresno 70-14 in early November and looking like they would not have a winning year. This one is very tough to call as of this writing. We have a H rated selection on almost EVERY bowl game in this issue but we are going to pass on this one. We reserve the right to use either side on the Late Phones and will call it right at the number which is currently Hawaii by 3.
FORECAST: Hawaii 39 UAB 36
RATING: NO PLAY

Boy- Phil is just as longwinded with his writeups as he is on the comp. phone; in my opinion because of the layoff from regular season most of what he writes isn't worth very much.
Which team has been properly coached and motivated and the bounce of the ball, etc. will decide it not the superfluous and irrelvant stuff he writes.
I would like to see his longwinded writeup/analysis for his disastrous GOY pick on Memphis last night.
To me most of what he writes is simply to show off how many stats he can accumulate.
The old adage of one being able to see the trees but not the forest certainly applies to Phil Steele when it comes to bowl games.
ps Tin-the criticism is not directed at you, as I know you are just trying to help.Last edited by savage1; 12-24-2004, 02:24 AM.

This is a Premium pick for these guys
Prediction:
The Atlanta Fixer: Hawaii 38 UAB 22
BC Gonzo: Hawaii 48 UAB 31
Hawaii –3.5 vs. Alabama-Birmingham: This is already a strong pick to begin with, but…. if WAC officials are refereeing this game, go ahead and load up your children’s education fund on the Rainbows. If you don’t think home cookin’ takes on a different meaning in the islands, go ask their last dozen non-conference opponents what they think. Better yet, go look at the penalty yard discrepancies. It’s almost criminal. In any case, Hawaii will ring up close to 50, as 9th year QB Timmah Chang will pad his already unreachable career passing stats against a very vulnerable Alabama-Birmingham secondary. By the way, check back here the day of the game, and I’ll try to find out if WAC officials are, in fact, calling (rigging) the game. You’re welcome.
HAWAII -3½ vs Alabama Bummingham- Sure, the Blazers are fired up about their first-ever bowl game, but the jerry rigging in Honolulu has gotten waaaaay out of control. Officials called to service the Rainbows have unending ties to the program, and tend to let the majority(ok, all) of the calls go the way of the home team… Even if the bowl ships in neutral officials, that crack-smoking mascot will scare them into swaying towards the locals… Chang throws all day, not even close…THICK 1
