TRENDS... Wednesday

This is Finals Week in most colleges, so not only do you have final exams, but you also have new players becoming eligible, after first semester ends; it gets hard to keep track of all the personnel comings and goings.

James Madison lost its last three games, including 24-point loss at Virginia Tech. Georgia Tech is 6-0, but has game with Gonzaga this weekend. Four of their five wins are by 25 or more points.

Wake Forest hammered Elon last three years by 20-42-42 points; they had tough game at Temple Monday night, and face Texas this weekend. Elon is 2-6, with pair of OT losses; their worst loss was 71-45 back in November at NC State.

Arkansas State is 5-1, but this is their first road game, vs Georgia Southern club that is 3-4, vs tougher slate of teams. Eagles start three seniors. ASU is led by pair of excellent senior guards.

Wisconsin beat UW-Milwaukee last six years, with wins by 18-11-2-8-20-12 pts. Badgers are 5-2, 4-0 at home; they lost at Marquette Saturday by 9. Guests are 6-1, losing first game at Valparaiso Saturday, by a single point. This is bigger game for UWM.

Northern Iowa won last four games vs UWGB, with last two wins at this site by 1,14 points over old rival from Horizon League. Green Bay is 5-2, with losses by 58 at Michigan State, 10 at Wisconsin. UNI is 4-2; three of their four wins are by 17+ points.

Northwestern lost 65-53 at DePaul last year, in what is crosstown rivalry; erratic Blue Demons have already lost as 17-point favorite and won as 10.5-point dog, so hard to pinpoint them. Wildcats are 2-2 this year, losing 48-44 to Virginia, 66-57 at Colorado.

NC State is killing teams, with 7-0 record, and six Ws by 16+ points. UL-Lafayette lost by 45 at Kansas last time out; their other losses are by 7 (@ Georgia St), by 14 (@ LSU) and by 21 (@ Charlotte).

UTEP swept New Mexico State last year, with wins by 25,9 points; they're 2-4 in last six visits to this site, about hour down road from El Paso. First true road game for Miners. Stateis 3-4; they have been off for 11 days, since being swept by Lobos, by 19,18 points.

Eastern Washington beat Boise State last two years by 5,6 points; Eagles are 2-4, 1-3 on road, with losses by 18-16-33 points away from home. Broncos are 2-0 in game following loss so far this season.

Wednesday's game
Heat @ Wizards-- Teams playing for second time in three nights and fourth time this season. Miami won by 23 Monday, holding Wiz to 36% from floor, with +13 rebounding edge. Washington won six of last seven at home and nine of 12 overall. Heat won and covered their last five games, and is 3-0 vs Wiz this season, in games won by 10-12-23 points.

Elsewhere, Nuggets lost last two games after 10-2 run; they allowed 102+ points in four of last five games, with five of their last six going over. Celtics won in double OT Monday in LA; they're 2-7 vs spread at home, but won last two at Fleet Center by combined total of 3 points.

Cavaliers are 13-4 in last seventeen games, but covered just one of last four; four of their last five went over total. Portland covered just one of last six games; they lost at Minnesota last night, 100-89, shooting just 5-15 from foul line, while Wolves took just 7 FT's whole game.

Minnesota hammered Raptors twice last year, by 11 at this site and 73-56 at Target Center; Wolves won last night vs Portland, their eighth win in last ten games; they covered three of last four when they played night before. Raptors lost their last seven games in row.

1-19 Hornets now lost 11 in row and fell in OT last night in their old Charlotte home; they meet Warrior team that beat them in triple OT three weeks ago, 115-109, as the Warriors had just 12 TO's in 63 minutes. Golden State won at Dallas last night; they're 4-2 in last six games.

Knicks moved over .500 last night with win over Nets; they lost three of four vs Detroit last year, but two games at MSG were split, and decided by total of five points. Knicks covered last four games, winning three. Pistons scored just 70 ppg in losing last two games.

First road game in eleven days for Bulls, who are 1-8 on foreign soil, 4-5 vs spread; eight of their lastnine games stayed under total. Grizzlies lost eight of last twelve and scored just 80.7 ppg in last three games; their last ten games stayed under the total.

Hawks actually beat Houston in first meeting, 88-84, as Rockets shot just 11 free throws and had 18 turnovers; they blew 8-point halftime lead. Houston won three of last four games, but scored just 81.3 ppg in those games Hawks lost in OT last night, to depleted Indiana team.

Spurs beat Orlando twice last year, by 11,15 pts; Spurs are 9-2 in last eleven games (8-3 vs spread); five of their last seven stayed under. Magic playing sixth game on road trip; they allowed 110 ppg in first five games, going 2-3, losing last two by 7,21 points.

Suns won at Utah 115-102 16 days ago, shooting 54% with only seven turnovers; they scored just 87.8 ppg in losing three of four to Jazz last year, but are now 14-1 in last fifteen games, with five wins in row, scoring 115.6 during cuirrent win streak.

Wednesday List of 13, more random thoughts
13) The Mets just spent $54 million on a pitcher who is clearly on downside of the hill, but is still way better than anyone else they have. Will Pedro last four years as an effective pitcher? Look at the Mets' rotation for 2005: Pedro-Glavine-Benson-Zambrano-Trachsel.

I defy you to name anyone in baseball who can go that deep with solid starting pitching. Of course, their OF is from hunger, but they still have time to fix that.

12) This is how bad Kansas City's defense is; they're 5-8, and their opponents have started only five drives in Chief territory all season.

11) This guy Bernard Kerik was a bigshot in NYPD, and rose so high politically that he was nominated for Homeland Security Chief in whole country, but now it comes out that he has enough skeletons in his closet that he could have been an NBA player.

My question is this: He has to know himself about the two mistresses, the hidden third ex-wife, connections with the mob, did he not think this would come out?

The guy cashed $6 million in stock recently; what cop owns $6 million in stock? While we fully admire a bald guy named Bernard who can bed Judith Regan, this seems to be a case where he got too big for his own good, and now every detail of his life will be picked apart with a fine tooth comb. The price of fame.

10) Top six NHL teams, in terms of revenue they've produced: Toronto-Dallas-Colorado-Detroit-Philly and the Rangers. By the way, stop calling Edmonton a low revenue team; they're anywhere from 12th to 15th in revenue produced in the league, middle class.

9) We talked about Indiana being overscheduled, well their athletic department is also $5 million in debt, and that, 1) will prevent them from firing Mike Davis, since they can't afford to pay extra bodies, and 2) is making it a lot harder to hire a quality head football coach.

8) You could make a strong case that Red Sox' team doctor won the World Series for Boston, with work he did on Schilling's ankle. What thanks do they give the guy? They fired him, with a plan in place to use a roster of specialists instead. Gratitude.......

7) The Nationwide/Nike/buy.com Tour is the AAA of pro golf, the level right below the bigtime. Who has the most career starts in the history of this tour? Fellow named Steve Haskins, who is the son of the legendary basketball coach, Don Haskins of Texas-El Paso. He keeps trying to make the bigtime, but has failed so far.

6) Granted, the Chief-Titan game Monday night had zero playoff implications, but what a spirited game it was, and a great example of why pro football is such a great sport. The two teams just went toe-to-toe until they had nothing left; if you didn't know better, looking att he emotion of the players, you'd have thought first place was at stake.

5) What does it say about the state of the 49ers that Dennis Erickson wants to go coach Ole Miss, and get out of a huge contract with the Niners?

4) You think if Miami Dolphin interim coach Jim Bates were to become the fulltime coach of the Fish, he can find room on his staff for Rick Neuheisel? Slick Rick was the QB of the San Antonio Gunslingers back in the USFL, when Bates was the 'slingers' head coach.

3) The draft order for 2005 fantasy baseball league is now posted on the Othersports page. Draft will begin once Beltran has signed his contract, since other high profile signings should happen right after that.

2) Regis Philbin is pinch-hitting for Dick Clark on TV New Year's Eve, as the ageless Clark recovers from a stroke. We hope he gets better soon. His best work, by the way, was on the $10,000 Pyramid, not on the more popular American Bandstand.

1) 59 teams were bowl eligible this season, and there are 28 bowls, so 56 teams go bowling. South Carolina and Clemson disqualified themselves, which meant one lone team would be eligible, but get left home.

Who was it? The Akron Zips, who watched Michigan State blow a 21-0 lead at Hawaii in their last game and lose 41-38. Had Spartans won, Hawaii wouldn't have been eligible, and Akron would have gotten a trip to paradise. Tough break for the Zips.

Tuesday List of 13, random thoughts........
13) Why would people gather and cheer when a death sentence came down for Scott Peterson? Its not like he is famous; its a horrible tragedy, and if he did it, he deserves to die, but for people to cheer? Its sad.

12) Who will be the first TV executive with the onions to put an execution on Pay-per-View? If it happened, it would make a whole lot of money, at least the first one would.......

11) Speaking of slow deaths, in their last eleven games the Saints have been outscored 104-0 in first quarter.

10) Troy Brown has three INTs for the Patriots, while playing both ways for a 12-1 team, but he's not a self-promoter; if Deion Sanders was doing what Brown does, we'd never hear the end of him. Maybe ESPN should devote some airtime to a great player who isn't a self-promoting jerk.

9) Ravens and Bills both started six drives in opposing territory Sunday; in 13 games this season, Rams have started a total of six drives in enemy territory, and only one in their last seven games.

8) Is Charlie Weis leaving the beginning of the end for the Patriots, especially since he wants to take some of the Patriot coaches with him? This will be interesting, to see who winds up where, assistant coach-wise

7) Walt Harris left Pitt for Stanford, which says a lot about the appreciation he felt in the Steel City. Panther alum Mark May ripped Harris more than once on live TV this season, a sure sign the alumni weren't happy. Not too many guys walk away from a team after they go to a BCS bowl, though, for a lateral move.

6) According to Forbes Magazine, which I never read the NBA franchises worth the most are: 1) Lakers, at $515 million, 2) Knicks, $494 mill, 3) Dallas, $374 mill, 4) Houston, $369 mill, and the Bulls, $368 million

5) Damon Jones of the Heat is in the 3-point shootout All-Star weekend in Denver; if he wins, his teammate Shaquille O'Neal is going to give him $50,000. Pretty nice teammate. Either that, or he doesn't think he'll win

4) Indiana Hoosiers are horribly overscheduled, and I am not sure Mike Davis can survive it with his job.

3) Speaking of which, Tyrone Willingham's career is in much better shape now than it was a month ago, as he is the new coach at state university with resources and a legitimate chance to win big, unlike what he had at Notre Dame. Huskies and Irish play in September.

2) The Mets turned down Floyd-for-Martinez, which means they can't be going after Sammy Sosa, who is in same salary range as Manny, and isn't as good.

1) Super scumweasel Scott Boras, who pathetically, has more clout than the Commissioner of Baseball, is at it again, trying to rip teams off in the Beltran case, like he did the Rangers with Alex Rodriguez. Sports would be so much better off without these parasites, who suck 3 or 4% out of every contract. Wouldn't a player be better off doing his own contract?
