  • Teasers not bad bets........vets please opine

While reading another post, i saw one of the vets post "teasers are bad bets", please let me give you my thoughts on the matter::

In college football and college basketball, teasers are always bad bets, the reason being is because in college you frequently see 65-10 scores, 49-7 scores and things like that, BUT in the NFL where you rarely see these types of blowouts and when the games and totals are so close to the number, i think teases are not bad bets.........rarely do you see NFL games decided by more than 20 points, so the percent chance of winning in an NFL tease is far greater than college teases

Many casino's in vegas will not allow teases which to me is a sign that it is not a bad bet ONLY in the NFL

with that said, i an ONLY talking about 6,6.5, or 7 point 2 team (ties push)teases where the percent is 0, 10%, 20% respectfully.........when the bookie is taking a 6 points tease and charging you 20%, it is a bad bet, if a tie in a 2-team tease loses, it is a bad bet, ONLY NFL teases, like the ones mentioned above are worth it..........

    any thoughts?

I love bringing a -6 or -7 down to a pick and i love taking DD Favorites and doing a 10 PT. teaser too like yesterday with Indy, N.E., and St Louis. I agree, teasers in the NFL where alot less blowouts occur can be very profitable!

2 team teasers in the NFL can be a bettors friend.....Enough said. In many games in the NFL the lines are so finely tuned that both teams could be winners using a 7 point teaser. If someone is a solid handicapper betting 2 team teasers in the NFL can be very profitable propositions.....

Teasers in Basketball, NBA or NCAA are the absolute WORST bet you can ever make. 5pts. is nothing, that can change in the last 10 seconds of a game with fouls and a half court shot. That being said, I am very close with a professional gambler, who does this for a living and has done it for over 25 years......he told me about 3 years ago that teasers are the worst bet in sports betting.

now, that being said........wayne, I do agree with you on bringing a New England team, for example, at home down from -7 to a pk. that's as solid as you can get. the problem that happens alot is you lose the other half of the teaser. then you're screwed. instead of pushing and just losing juice, you lost the whole bet.

i'm just telling you what i've learned over the last couple years, even though i sometimes will throw a tease in there myself. like last night, i teased the steelers +4 and the over 30. You could've teased that game any way possible and you would've won. Sometimes it just works out like that.

i think the last thing you said is my point, on a normal weekend (not this one) you can go down and look at all the nfl scores and you would be suprised how many teasers would win on both sides and totals of the same game

            b

however, in all other sports, they are worthless

Ron every week in the NFL there are multiple favorites in the -5 to -8 range. I always take the ones i love to win but am a little weary of the spread and tease them. I don't tease a -7 with a -4 cause i know that -4 turns to a +2 or +3 and can screw me. I take a -6 and -7 or so that i just think will win and go for it without ever worrying about a spread while i'm watching games. It's much more fun rooting for teams just to win then it is worrying about covering a number in a tight game.

I like making 3 or 4 point dogs +10 or +11 too. I even like taking a +1 or +2 and getting anything over a touchdown with a teaser. Take a 1 pt. dog if you like them and i would do a 6.5 teaser to make it +7.5. If i like a favorite of -3.5 or -4 then i will take someone else i'm confident in and do a ML Parlay.

The most important part of teasing the nfl is numbers. You need to be smart and put the right ones together. I love 10 pt. teasers in the NFL as well because 10 points in an NFL game is ALOT of points. Those too you need to be smart with. I played a Carolina +10, Oakland +11, and S.D. +7 Tease that hit yesterday too. They would have gone 1-1-1 in straight wagers. A team like N.O. who never seems to beat anyone by DD. A team with multiple key injuries like K.C. on the road where they struggle to win, never mind by DD so Oakland +11 @ home winners of 2 of the last 3 was a play and S.D. +7. A team everyone knew might lose at home and if they did it would have probably been by 3 or 4 screwing 6 or 7 pt. teasers. So i made them a 10 pt. tease +7. I didn't have to sweat that wager out when Denver was down 3 and driving twice late. I knew a FG or TD by Denver didn't hurt me on the 10 pt. tease.

College is obviously MUCH tougher because of the many blowouts that happen. Vegas loves the person that doesn't think before placing a teaser because they don't think about the many point options before placing the wager. I have also see a ton of times where the book gets killed by a Sunday night or Monday night game in which EVERY teaser hits. Both sides and both totals stay within 6 or 7 of the number. What other bet gives you a guaranteed option of winning sometimes? I can't think of any. They also don't like it when 3 of the 4 sides hit like both sides of the total and 1 team. Seattle tonight has had 2 games this year already in which ANY teaser in that game was a Winner (Carolina & Miami) How do you think the books in Seattle liked those weekend's? Dallas has had that happen 3 times this year too where a 7 pt. teaser had NO losing option (Cleve,Wash,Pitt). It happens all the time where a teaser is a winner no matter which side and total you take and no other wager allows that. Do you think Vegas loves that.

The whole key with teasers is when and how to use the 6,6.5,7, and 10 pointers.

                  Teasers...

Teasers are only a good bet if you also parlay the same teams.

Instead of a $100 2 team teaser, make a $50 teaser and a $50 parlay with the same teams.

I used to do teasers ALL THE TIME. Two years ago I went over my plays and found that the extra 6 - 7 points only helped 20% of the time.

Now I rarely play teasers, but if I do, I'll parlay the same teams.

Then you void your teaser if one team doesn't win. Like i said earlier. It's a numbers game and you have to use a planned betting strategy with teasers.

IMO In the NFL bringing -6 or -7 favorites down to EVEN is the worst bet of all. I've seen far too many favorites in the NFL lose the game SU.

Wayne, your post is a bit contradictory. If there are less blowouts in the NFL than one would/should tease a DD dog higher and take the additional points.

In the NFL Favorites of -6 to -10 lose SU 26% of the games. They are ATS winners a mere 47.6% of the games.

More importantly they Cover a 6 point teaser 70.6%. Mathematically, playing two -6 to -10 favorites teams in a teaser the player would WIN 49.8% of their tease wagers.

For a teaser to be profitable the player needs to tease 2 games with 71% success rate or better.

                          IMO

I like to use teasers when I can turnaround what I think is to be a close game...i,e, a dog at+ 3 on ateaser becomes +3 1/2...when I think a game is to be decided by a FG, and it gets me off that dreaded 3. Thus in a FG difference game I win when Fav wins by FG...Naturaly win if Dog wins...Then you have to watch who you tease it with...This is when I like a 7 pt favorite on a tease, or an 8pt + dog, makes for 2 score differencial...Each to his own...FrankB03 has some good input as to percentages....You have to wage the ML odds on 1 game, vs the teaser odds on 2 games...LOL to all...Just my take...

6 pts NFL teasers seem to be the best

On November the 2nd,i was listening to Larry Grossman's Las Vegas show (Archived at cardplayer.com) called¨ You can bet on it¨.He asked Andy Iskoe this question:¨What is the best way to make money in sport betting NOW?I know it used to be the NBA totals, especially unders¨.
Iskoe said that 6 pts NFL teasers are the best way in 2004,but you gotta be very selective, and have the right technique. The best seeming to leave a little bit of pts, according to ME (for what its worth). For example, teasing a7'or 8'gives you a bettor value than a minus 7 or 6'or 6.
Now i am no teaser better, but maybe i should be...

Hopes this helps,Shorty...and congrats on your MARVELOUS work.

For what its worth I feel teasers in any sports should be bet very sparingly and selectively.
To compare them to the stock market, they remind me of buying calls and puts; as opposed to the actual stocks themselves;you can get lucky and win with them for a while, but over time I think they (teasers and options) are a losing proposition especially if you play them anywhere near as much as you do your straight bets or in the case of the market owning the stocks outright.
Not a perfect analogy, but the main point is that i think the odds are stacked against you.
