    THE ANIMAL

    Pro Basketball:
    3 Units on Philadelphia 76ers -11½ -110

Something has lit a fire under Philadelphia as the 76ers have won five consecutive games including a 20-poin! t blowout win at Cleveland Friday night as the two teams finish a home-and-home series today at the First Union Center. On Friday’s analysis we spoke about the 76ers domination on the road recently going 7-1 SU with all seven victories by seven points or more. That kind of effort usually rewards itself with a lopsided home triumph and that’s what we are anticipating today. The Cavaliers come off a 0-4 home stand losing the quartet by a combined 53 points. This team is 3-25 SU on the road where they have been outscored by 15 points a game on average this season. In Philadelphia, the 76ers are 8-4 ATS with the Cavs since 1996. The last time they met here was back in November when Philly won by 24 points. The 76ers are 6-1 ATS after playing a game as a road favorite. Our only concern here is the fact that Philly is 0-7 ATS after a blowout win of 20 points or more the last three years. But Cleveland has been non-competitive both at home and on the road recently. We lay! the double-digits with 3* Philadelphia

NBA FREEBIE: DAL/WASH UNDER How easy was A&M yesterday? Let’s move back into the pro ranks into the MCI Center for an ABC televised match-up between the Mavs and Bullets…er…Wizards. The Mavericks have been scoring enough points lately to possibly warrant a pick on the over but their “D” has been to damn solid. Their last 3 games have gone under the total as they held those opponents to 87 or less points. It’s the opposite for Washington as 2 straight and 6 of 9 have had a “U” posted because of the fact they have scored 89 or less in 4 of 5. As for the series, 4 of the last 5 in DC have played under along with 8 of the last 11 overall.

Free Winners for Sunday, February 23
    NCAA BASKETBALL
    Virginia @ Wake Forest
    Pick: Wake Forest -11.5
    Time: 6:30 PM EST

Today the National Sports Advisors look for Wake Forest to cover as -11.5 point favorites, when they matchup with Virginia in an ACC conference matchup today.

Wake Forest enters today's game with an impressive overall record of 18-4, including 8-3 in ACC conference play. One of the Demon Deacons four losses came at the hands of Virginia, when the Cavaliers deated Wake 85-75 in Charlottesville on January 23rd. Skip Prosser's Demon Deacons will be looking to payback Virginia today in Winston-Salem, where Wake is undefeated at 13-0 this season.

Virginia comes into today's game on the ropes, as their season is completely falling apart. The Cavs have now lost three straight games to fall to 14-10 overall, and 5-7 in ACC play. If Virginia wants to hold onto it's slim hopes of earning an at-large bid to this year's NCAA Tournament, than they "must" win tonight's game over Wake Forest. That will be easier said than done, however, as Virginia is a woeful 4-8 on the road this season.

So why WAKE FOREST? Well, some may scoff at the -11.5 point spread and feel that is too many points against Virginia, but Wake Forest has been dominating teams at home and Virginia is just a bad road team to put it mildly. Wake players will definitely remember the loss to Virginia earlier this season and they will be out for revenge. Take Wake to win big today

VIRGINIA (14-10 SU/10-10 ATS) at WAKE FOREST (18-4 SU/12-6 ATS)

Virginia heads to North Carolina to take on 11th-ranked Wake Forest for an ACC Conference game. The Cavaliers are coming off shocking 73-64 home loss to Clemson as -8½ point chalks. The loss dealt Virginia's NCAA tournament hopes a serious blow as the Tigers ended a 10-game road losing streak in the league dating to January 2002 and handed Virginia its second consecutive home loss after the Cavaliers started 10-0. Virginia got 30 points from Devin Smith and 14 points and 13 rebounds from Travis Watson, but played its second straight sluggish game, despite the high stakes, and allowed Clemson to sweep the season series. The Cavaliers, who lost 78-77 at Clemson on January 18th, trailed by nine at halftime, got within three early and four late, but Clemson's Edward Scott hit about a 26-footer with 3:19 left and scored eight of the Tigers' last 13. Clemson led 59-46 with 7:13 left before Smith hit two free throws, Elton Brown hit two more and Watson swished a 3-pointer, just his fifth of the season, to pull Virginia to 59-53 with 4:59 remaining. Wake Forest is coming off a 75-67 win at Georgia Tech on Thursday as +2½ point underdogs. Josh Howard scored 24 points and Justin Gray tied his season high with 20 as the 10th-ranked Demon Deacons beat the Yellow Jackets and ended Georgia Tech's 13-game home winning streak. Howard, the leading scorer in the Atlantic Coast Conference at 19 points a game, dominated from the start, making his first seven shots. His effort helped Wake Forest stay a half-game ahead of Duke and Maryland for the top spot in the ACC. The Demon Deacons shot 53 percent as a team, the first time this season Georgia Tech has allowed an opponent to make at least half its shots at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. A month ago, Howard had 30 points in a six-point victory over the Yellow Jackets. He kept his cool in a physical game this time, walking away from a few altercations in the first half. Three times, he and Isma'il Muhammad got tangled up, forcing the referees to separate them. Wake Forest took control of a tight game with an 18-5 run early in the second half, highlighted by Howard's powerful dunk off a rebound. Gray also made back-to-back 3-pointers during the spurt, which gave the Deacons a 62-46 lead. Virginia is 4-6 SU and ATS in their last ten games while Wake Forest is 7-3 SU and 5-5 ATS in their last ten outings. Virginia is 3-1 SU and ATS the last four meetings with Wake Forest, including an 85-75 win and cover (+1) over the Deacons in Virginia on January 23rd. But the Cavaliers, under head coach Pete Gillen, are a dismal 9-27 ATS on the ACC road. Wake gets the call in this game. Lay the points.
