Tampa Bay over Atlanta by 20
That 0-4 beginning the Buccaneers had is history. The Bucs are a revamped,
dangerous team. They are a team no one particularly wants to play right
now.The Falcons can afford a letdown having virtually assured themselves
of winning the NFC South Division. The Bucs can’t.The Bucs’ overall offensive
stats are misleading because they only managed three points and 169
yards in their opener, and two field goals and 271 yards in their second
game. In these early games Brad Johnson was the quarterback, Charlie
Garner the featured back and Michael Clayton wasn’t yet a factor. The
makeup is all different now.The offense has taken off behind Brian Griese
at quarterback,Michael Pittman carrying the ball and a healthy wide receiving
corps featuring Clayton and veterans Joey Galloway and Joe Jurevicius.
Pittman has accounted for 100 yards either rushing or receiving four of the
past five games, and Galloway provides a deep threat dimension the Bucs
previously were lacking. Clayton has been outstanding. The Bucs have won
and covered their past three home games. As a home ‘dog the Bucs are 12-
2-1 ATS. In their last two home games, the Bucs have scored 69 points.
Tampa Bay’s defense also is playing better. Derrick Brooks, Shelton Quarles
and Ian Gold are all playing at a high level. The Falcons are overrated. They
entered Week 12 ranked 29th in pass defense and 30th in pass offense. They
have won games by one point, two points, three points twice and once by
four points. They have been flat the past two weeks and lucky to win.The
Falcons beat the Bucs, 24-14, three weeks ago. The Bucs, though, have a
good history of usually containing Michael Vick.Tampa Bay has beaten and
covered six of its last eight against the Falcons. The Falcons are making the
switch to grass, which slows Vick and Warrick Dunn.TAMPA BAY 30-10.

      *Jacksonville over Pittsburgh by 14
Could quarterback Ben Roethlisberger be hitting that rookie wall?
Roethlisberger has generated just one touchdown and been sacked 11
times the past two games. Could Plaxico Burress’ pulled hamstring keep
him out a second consecutive game, leaving the Steelers without a deep
threat and making Hines Ward a marked man? Burress’ absence would
allow the Jaguars to bring up their safety and help their rush defense
against a Pitt running attack that has out-rushed its last five opponents, 911-
      209. Can the Steelers keep rolling playing their third road game in four
weeks and with injuries to linebacker Kendrell Bell, nose guard Casey
Hampton and cornerback Chad Scott? That’s a lot of injuries on defense
and a lot of question marks. So we can definitely see the Steelers tripping
up here against a Jacksonville squad fighting for its playoff life. This is the
Sunday night ESPN game and the Jaguars’ first appearance on national TV
this season. Expect them to be fired-up.This is a non-division matchup, but
the Jaguars know the Steelers well. The Jaguars have four former Steelers
on their roster, Jason Gildon,Dewayne Washington,Troy Edwards and Chris
Fuamatua-Ma’afala.These are veterans well-acquainted with Steelers Coach
Bill Cowher. RB Fred Taylor is having a strong second half. Sparked by
Taylor, the Jaguars have rushed for 544 yards their past three games. The
Steelers are difficult to run against with their 3-4 defense. That’s why we
like the Jaguars having QB Byron Leftwich back from a knee injury. He’s
thrown for at least 298 yards in four of his last six starts. His timing should
be better after getting the rust off last week against the Vikings. The Jaguars
have the necessary offensive balance, respectable run defense and motivation
to upset the Steelers on the national stage. JACKSONVILLE 27-13.

      **PREFERRED
      *Detroit over Arizona by 14
When last spotted on Thanksgiving the Lions were running for cover, victims
of a six-touchdown performance by Peyton Manning. After an extra
period of rest and contemplation, the Lions host Arizona. The Cardinals are
1-17 SU their last 18 road games, 7-15 ATS their past 22 road contests.
Arizona quarterback Shaun King is not exactly Manning. In fact he’s the
opposite. While Manning is the NFL’s best, King could be the worst starting
quarterback. Since replacing Josh McCown two games ago, he’s been intercepted
four times and fumbled four times, losing one. McCown isn’t much
better, and you have to wonder if his confidence has been shattered if
Dennis Green switches back to him.Green thought he had to do something
to get his offense going by making a quarterback change. What he can do
is get some decent players to go with wide receivers Anquan Boldin and
Larry Fitzgerald. The Lions are aware of Boldin. They will be psyched to stop
Boldin after he burned them for 217 yards and two touchdowns last year.
Despite that magnificent performance, the Cardinals still lost to the Lions
at Detroit, 42-24.The Lions’ ground game has picked up with rookie Kevin
Jones recovered from a sprained ankle. He’s rushed for 199 yards the last
two games, averaging 6.4 yards per carry on fresh legs. Emmitt Smith, on
the other hand, is banged up. He’s averaged less than three yards a carry the
      past five games. DETROIT 28-14.

      Minnesota over *Chicago by 17
The Bears nearly upset the Vikings in Week 3, losing 27-22. But their year
ended in the Metrodome during that matchup when Rex Grossman suffered
a season-ending knee injury. In eight games since then the Bears
      offense has gained 176, 224, 231, 254, 167, 160, 224 and 140 yards. That
comes out to an average of 197 yards a game, less than half of what the
Vikings average per game. And now the Vikings have Randy Moss back. His
presence opens up Minnesota’s ground attack because safeties can’t cheat
up anymore to stop Onterrio Smith and Michael Bennett. The Bears’
defense is respectable, but their offense is beyond bad. It looks like Chad
Hutchinson will be the fourth starting quarterback this season for the
Bears, with Craig Krenzel suffering a sprained ankle against the Cowboys
and Jonathan Quinn proving to be an abject failure. We’re not expecting
much from Hutchinson and neither should you, especially with tackle John
Tait and guard Reuben Brown sidelined with injuries. With such wretched
quarterback play it’s no surprise the Bears haven’t scored a touchdown on
offense two of their past three games. Daunte Culpepper is going to put up
points no matter how tough the defense and inclement the weather might
be. The Bears haven’t been able to stop the run either since losing Brian
Urlacher, surrendering 204 rushing yards to Edgerrin James and 150 yards
to Julius Jones their past two contests. MINNESOTA 31-14.

*New York Jets over Houston by 7
Obviously we’d like the Jets’ chances a lot more if Chad Pennington (check
status) is back at quarterback instead of Quincy Carter. The Jets are much
more dependent on the run without Pennington. This is the Jets’ only home
game in a four-week stretch, so this is a victory they need to have. The
Texans have had problems when stepping up in class away from home.
They’ve lost their last two road games to the Broncos and Colts by a combined
margin of 80-27, and are in a sandwich spot here off a home win
against the Titans and hosting the Colts next week. NY JETS 24-17.

      *Baltimore over Cincinnati by 5
Jamal Lewis has rushed for at least 100 yards in all seven of his games
against the Bengals, including gaining 186 when the Ravens defeated
Cincinnati, 23-9, in Week 3. Lewis missed last week’s game because of a
sprained ankle. If he can’t go the Ravens are forced to pass a lot more,
which isn’t their best approach considering their QB is Kyle Boller. The
Bengals actually outgained the Ravens during the first meeting and had the
ball more than six minutes. However, the Bengals are 0-7 SU and ATS their
past seven in Baltimore. The Bengals also are 1-11 ATS the second time they
play the Ravens in a season. BALTIMORE 14-9.

New England over *Cleveland by 10
The Browns held the Patriots to nine points last year, but still lost. The
Browns have dropped 20 of their last 28, including their last five, after making
the playoffs just two years ago. This is a rest stop for the Patriots.Yet it’s
hard to pick against Bill Belichick as the Patriots are on a 21-3-2 (87 percent)
covering run. They’ve won 25 of their last 26.Kelly Holcomb had his
first good game in two years, but it couldn’t save the Browns last week. The
Browns can’t stop the run, and Corey Dillon has run for more than 100
yards five of his last six outings. NEW ENGLAND 26-16.

      *Indianapolis over Tennessee by 13
Would it mean anything if we told you the Colts could be missing three
starting offensive linemen, and that the Titans had allowed just one passing
touchdowns the last 18 quarters? Probably not. The Colts are averaging
34.5 points. They are on pace to finish with the second-most points ever in
a season. Peyton Manning has fired 24 TD passes the past five games and
Edgerrin James has rushed for 309 yards the last two games. This is the
Titans’ third straight road contest. They are 2-9 ATS on carpet and have been
outscored, 93-51, by the Colts in losing the past three meetings. INDIANAPOLIS
      34-21.

      *CLOSE CALLS
      Buffalo over *Miami by 1
Both teams are showing great improvement on offense. The Dolphins are
averaging 21.8 points the past five games after averaging 9.1 their first six
games, while the Bills have scored 37 or more points three of their last five
games. This is Buffalo’s second straight long road trip. The Bills are 3-14 on
the road their last 17.The Bills defense, though, ranks among the top five.
The Dolphins are vulnerable to Willis McGahee having lost both starting
defensive tackles and LB Junior Seau. Dolphins QB A.J. Feeley won his first
start last week, but is hobbled by a sore hip. BUFFALO 17-16.

*St. Louis over San Francisco by 13
The Rams are hard to predict. They are capable of sweeping the Seahawks,
but equally capable of losing by 17 to the Dolphins. The 49ers,however, are
      having a season only a draftnik could love.They are a miserable 1-10.The
closest they’ve come in their last seven losses is seven points to the 2-9
Dolphins. The 49ers have a banged-up secondary that the Rams can easily
exploit, and QB Tim Rattay has played much worse on the road throwing
three interceptions with just two TD passes. The Rams, however, ranked
29th in run defense going into Monday’s game against the Packers, and
were missing several starting offensive linemen. ST. LOUIS 33-20.

Carolina over *New Orleans by 1
The only thing predictable about the Saints is their ability to underachieve.
Mistakes, stupid penalties and bad decisions have been a staple of Jim
Haslett’s club the past couple of years. Carolina has only played once on
carpet this season. But it’s very difficult to trust the Saints in a favorite’s
      role.As a home favorite in December the Saints are 4-15 (21 percent).The
Panthers have won and covered their past three, and have covered 12 of
the last 14 in an underdog role. CAROLINA 24-23.

Kansas City over *Oakland by 4
The Raiders haven’t been that bad at home with a 2-3 mark, while the
Chiefs are 1-8 ATS their past nine road games and still might be missing
Priest Holmes (check status).Trent Green has picked up the slack during
most of Holmes’ absence throwing for more than 300 yards four of the past
five games. Green has fired 11 TD passes the past seven games. The Chiefs
have beaten Oakland three of the past four. The Chiefs swept the Raiders
twice last season, but both games weren’t decided until the final play.
      KANSAS CITY 30-26.

*San Diego over Denver by 4
The Broncos have beaten the Chargers in 12 of the past 15 games, including
23-13 back in Week 3.The Chargers held the Broncos to just 1.8 yards
a rush in that defeat, lowest of the Mike Shanahan era. But the Broncos’
ground game has picked up since then thanks to Reuben Droughns. The
Chargers have not failed to cover a spread since losing to the Jets on Sept.
19.The Chargers have won four in a row at home, with their average margin
of victory being 22 points. Since recovering from a nagging groin injury
during the Chargers’ bye week, LaDainian Tomlinson has rushed for 210
yards the past two games. SAN DIEGO 33-29.

*Washington over New York Giants by 3
The Giants have won the past two years at Washington as slight underdogs
and came up with seven takeaways, their most since ’86, in beating the
Redskins, 20-14, back in Week 2.The Giants, though, are 0-11 SU during the
second half the past two years. This will be rookie QB Eli Manning’s first
road start. He’ll be facing a heavy blitzing team for the second consecutive
week, and not playing behind a very good offense line. The Giants are averaging
just 10 points the past three weeks. The Redskins, however, have
scored the fewest points in the NFL.WASHINGTON 10-7.

*Philadelphia over Green Bay by 1
The Packers are an NFL-best 17-2 in December and January under Mike
Sherman. The Packers have double revenge motivation going here. The
Eagles edged the Packers 17-14 at Green Bay during the regular season and
20-17 in overtime at home during the playoffs last season. The Packers were
riding a five-game winning streak into Monday night behind a hot Brett
Favre and improved run defense. The Eagles have averaged 34.6 points the
past three games since Brian Westbrook returned from a rib injury. In the
two games Westbrook missed, the Eagles averaged just nine points and 205
      yards. PHILADELPHIA 24-23.

*Seattle over Dallas by 7 (Monday)
The Cowboys are slow, going nowhere and Bill Parcells looks tired. Dallas
is 2-6 SU and ATS its past eight with the last four defeats coming by 20, 28,
23 and 20 points. We’ll see if tryout camp has begun if Parcells gives Drew
Henson another start. The Seahawks are playing at home for the third week
in a row, but have failed to cover their past four home games. The Seahawks
also are just 1-7 ATS their past eight. So even though Shaun Alexander
should be able run on the Cowboys’ midget linebackers, we don’t have a
lot of confidence picking either side at this point. SEATTLE 24-17.

      OVER/UNDER
**UNDER: New York Giants at Washington – The Giants have surrendered
less than 110 net yards passing three of the past four games, while
the Redskins are averaging less than 13 points a game and have gone under
      nine of their 11 games.

OVER: Denver at San Diego – The Chargers are averaging 37 points at
home, but their pass defense ranked 27th through the first 11 weeks.

UNDER: Cincinnati at Baltimore – The Ravens are giving up an average
of less than 14 points their last seven games, while the Bengals led the
NFL in takeaways through Week 11.

MICHIGAN STATE over HAWAII* by 25
While some teams may use this trip as a vacation or a reward after the long season,
it is going to be anything but that for John L. Smith and the Spartans. Smith was
so infuriated by the dismal showing in that 37-13 drubbing at Penn State that an
entirely different approach has been set for this one. They will be enforcing curfews
and practicing in pads, and since that last defeat cost them a bowl appearance,
this will actually be their bowl effort for this season. And that spells bad news for
June Jones and his undermanned defense. Even in getting that explosive win over
Northwestern once again the defense was pounded for over 500 yards, and if anything
that win hurts the Rainbows here, because it only gives Smith the ability to
show his team what can happen if they do not come in with a full effort. Now that
Drew Stanton is back to 100% the State ground game can completely control this
vs. a decimated defensive front, much like they did in rolling to 430 overland vs.
Wisconsin, 368 vs. Michigan and 324 vs. Minnesota, and with two full weeks to
prepare the Spartan defense is not going to see anything from Timmy Chang that
they can not tactically handle. MICHIGAN STATE 45-20.

      **PREFERRED
MIAMI-FLA.* over VIRGINIA TECH by 24
Perhaps it is not so ironic that these two end up playing in the key game to decide
the A.C.C. championship in their freshman season in this conference, but while
the Hokies control matters by winning here, it is not going to happen. Rarely has
a team playing for a conference title faced such an uphill battle. While they come
in drained off of that intense win over rival Virginia, the Hurricanes have been
waiting for two weeks to avenge their worst showing of the Larry Coker era, that
31-7 humiliation in Blacksburg LY. Accentuating that is the fact that they have
played their best football of the season since losing in overtime to Clemson a
month ago, with Brock Berlin finally developing into the QB that they had expected.
Berlin has thrown for 1,184 yards without an interception in the last four
games, and the offense has only turned the ball over six times in nine games since
the opener vs. Florida State. By eliminating mistakes the Hokies can not make the
big plays they need to for field position, and without that their offense is average,
at best. And average is not good enough to win here, which is something that
Frank Beamer has never done. MIAMI 34-10.

      Close Calls
M.A.C. CHAMPIONSHIP GAME (Thursday at Detroit)
Toledo over Miami O. by 3
It was a remarkable turnaround for Tom Amstutz and his Rockets after being
blown out 63-21 at Minnesota and 63-14 at Kansas in their first two games, with
a young defense maturing after that early abuse. And the character shown in making
up deficits vs. Northern Illinois and Bowling Green in those two showdown
games carries over here. They fell 23-16 on the road to the RedHawks earlier but
uncharacteristically turned it over four times in that one, which negated a 177-76
edge in rushing yards. After this, the turnaround is complete. TOLEDO 30-27.

Navy over Army by 14 (at Philadelphia)
It is not often that a team with two wins can be considered to have improved greatly,
but Bobby Ross has to be given a strong grade for his first season at West Point,
after inheriting a team that was 1-24 the two previous seasons. But included in that
run were ugly losses of 58-12 and 34-6 to the Midshipmen, and lower that margin
will be another measuring stick of progress. It will not be easy with that porous
rush defense (allowing 5.2 per attempt). NAVY 35-21.

Southern Cal over U.C.L.A.* by 24
Absolutely no home field advantage at all for the Bruins here, which is a shame
because it would be the only advantage that they would have had in any area. Last
chance for Matt Leinart to impress the Heisman voters, and there is little that this
defense can do about it. SOUTHERN CAL 38-14.

      S.E.C. CHAMPIONSHIP GAME (at Atlanta)
      Auburn over Tennessee by 15
The Vols may cry about “what could have been” if Erik Ainge was available for QB
play in this one, but considering that Ainge was picked off four times in that 34-
10 loss to the Tigers in Knoxville earlier, when Auburn built a 31-3 lead in the second
quarter and coasted home, perhaps it would not have mattered anyway. What
really does matter is the current form of the Tennessee defense, or lack thereof.
      AUBURN 31-16.

BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME (at Kansas City)
      Oklahoma over Colorado by 24
For the Buffaloes to go from the off-season disasters to this game would ordinarily
be a great sign for the program, but the truth is that it is only a result of how
awful the Big 12 North was this season. Somehow we can not erase the memory of
their 31-7 home loss to Texas, when they were out-rushed 326-3, and got their
only points on an interception return. Sooners are playing for a BCS margin, and
Heisman numbers for Jason White and Adrian Peterson, which means no letting
      up. OKLAHOMA 38-14.

California over Southern Miss* by 21
Although it should not have to come to this, the Bears do need a clean win to guarantee
a spot in the Rose Bowl under the current BCS standings. The Golden Eagles
should not stand in their way, especially with their overly aggressive defensive
schemes actually playing right into the hands of Jeff Tedford’s playbook. CALIFORNIA
      37-16.

Pittsburgh over South Florida* by 1
Sad, but true, that the Panthers wrap up a BCS bid by winning this game, and still
might get one if they lose. Perhaps it would be fitting if the Bulls pulled the upset,
which might finally be the death knell for the current format, and it really would
not be much of an upset at all. PITTSBURGH 21-20.

      Louisville over Tulane* by 28
Ideal conditions in this dome mean yet one more chance for the explosive
Cardinals to create new entries in their record books. And the defense that they
face this day makes it even more ideal. LOUISVILLE 55-27.

Florida Atlantic over Florida Int. by 17 (Pro Player Stadium)
Before Howard Schnellenberger can make real in-roads on the national level with
his program, he first must take control of his backyard. That happens easily against
a worn out Panther defense that was not very good even when fresh. FLORIDA ATLANTIC 34-17.
