  • Trends for 12/01

    -- Toledo has all five starters back from last year, but already has road losses at Vandy, Wright State, by 10 or more points. ECU lost 90-60 to Gardner-Webb.

    -- Syracuse has beaten St Bonaventure in the last fou ryears by 10,9 points. Bonnies lost by 15 at home to Marist, so Orange can probably name score here.

    -- Towson State lost its last three visits to Geo. Mason by 9-22-29 points; they've lost six in row overall vs the Patriots, with home losses by even wider margins.

    -- Charlotte is picked 3rd in C-USA, but they already lost at home to Rutgers. ULL lost to LSU by 14, but won their other two games. Cajuns are picked to win their half of Sun Belt.

    -- Hofstra won 58-55 at Columbia last year. Lions are 3-1 vs cupcakes. Hofstra is 3-0, with wins by 2-10-13 points; they have no senior starters.

    -- Home side won last two Wright St-Ball St matchups with Raiders losing last visit to Muncie, 66-59. Eight of ten Wright State players are freshmen/sophomores.

    -- Kent State won six of last seven games vs Central Michigan, with lone loss in MAC tourney two years ago. Flashes lost last three regular season visits to this site by 4-23-10 points.

    -- Detroit won five of last six meetings with Western Michigan, but lost last visit to Kalamazoo, 71-55; the Titans lost last two games, by 10 at Purdue, by 15 at home vs Ball State.

    -- Rutgers won 60-47 at Penn State last year; they're picked #10 in Big East, but win at Charlotte could be a sign of bigger things to come. Nittany Lions are picked 10th in Big 11, have no senior starters.

    -- Wake Forest-Illinois might be preview of national title game; both sides have all five starters back, both are picked to win their league. ACC leads challenge vs Big 11 by 4-1 entering tonight's games.

    -- Richmond lost 70-58 at South Florida last year, but Bulls are picked to finish 13th in 14-team league, while Spiders are #4 pick in their half of A-12. USF has five seniors starting for them.

    -- Akron beat Duquesne in OT last year, 64-61, as a 9-point favorite; both teams are picked to finish 5th in their division. Zips lost their first road game 90-88 at Drake, as 7-point udnerdog.

    -- Ohio State won its first two games, both at home, by 35,17 points; they have new coach, four starters back and are #6 pick in Big 11. Clemson lost by 9 at Boston College last time out, as 9-point underdog.

    -- SMU beat Texas Tech last year, 62-59 in Dallas, their first win in three tries vs Knight's Red Raiders, who lost to TCU last week. Mustangs got spanked by Oklahoma State Monday night, 76-57.

    -- Wichita State won its first two games by 18,10 pts; they're picked to win MVC, berhind four returning starters. San Francisco lost at Ohio U Monday night.

    -- Iowa State won its last five games vs No Iowa, with last two wins at this site by 7,14 points. Panthers went to Cincinnati and lost in double OT to Bearcats, so it might be another good year in Cedar Rapids.

    -- Bradley beat Northern Illinois last year, 76-67 in Peoria; with seven new guys on roster, Braves went to Bowling Green and lost first road game, 81-65. NIU stunned DePaul Saturday, after an 0-2 start.

    -- DePaul beat Dayton 76-69 in double OT in first rd of NCAA tourney eight months ago, now they get the rebuilding Flyers (three new starters) after they lost at home to Eastern Kentucky.

    -- North Carolina visits Bloomington, as C Sean May goes back to hometrown, to what should be a warm reception. Tar Heels crushed four straight foes with PG Felton in lineup. Hoosiers are overscheduled like Izzo was at Michigan State last year.

    -- Home team won both Lobo-Aggie games by a wide margin in New Mexico last year, with Aggies losing by 65-49 in the Pit, where they've actually won three of last five visits. New Mexico is more experienced club.

    -- Home side won last five BYU-Utah State games, as Cougars lost last two visits to Logan by 2,9(ot) points. BYU is struggling early in year; both sides struggled on their long road trips.

    -- Arkansas State upset Ole Miss in Oxford last year, 74-69, as 11-point dog; they have senior G's and are picked high in Sun Belt. Ole Miss has four seniors that start, but they lost over half their '03-'04 scoring.

    -- Virginia is sparked by frosh PF Singletary from the streets of Philly; they've already spanked Arizona this year. Northwestern had rough time in Alaska, and are not playing as well as their predicted 7th place finish in sturdy Big 11.

    -- Home team won five of last six UCSB-Pepperdine games, with Gauchos losing last three visits to Malibu by 4-11-20 points. Waves had excellent win over the Badgers Saturday. WCC is underrated league.

    -- UNLV beat Cal 59-57 on Strip last year; Bears are beset by injury early this season, while Rebels split first two games in Kruger era, beating Oregon State after they had lost to St Mary's.

    -- Gonzaga won its last six games vs Washington, with five of the six won by 10+ points. Huskies have to do without injured F Roy, but they did win Alaskan event with him on bench. Zags got hammered by Illini in their last game.

    -- Four of last six San Jose-Santa Clara games were won by two or less points, with road team winning five of the six, and teams splitting last two at Toso Pavilion.

    -- LMU went to Denver last year and beat Pioneers in OT, 84-82. Denver lost by 4 at Kansas State, then whacked Eastern Washington, so they might be a little bit better this season.

    -- San Diego State beat San Diego last two years, by 3-6 points, after they had lost previous three meetings vs Toreros. Only one of last six series games was won by more than six points.

    -- South Carolina beat Appalachian State last two yrs by 20-15 points. ASU is 3-1, but their only loss was by 17 at Virginia. Gamecocks have three starters back from last year's 23-11 team; they spanked Temple in their last game.

    -- Wofford gave Tennessee quite a battle Monday, but Volunteers won out at end, 73-67, as 17-pt favorite.

    -- Niagara won last five games vs local rival Canisius, with three of the five decided by six or less points. The Purple Eagles already crushed St John's and lost at Big East's Providence at the wire.

    -- Western Kentucky won at Georgia by 10, so they might be bouncing back this year. SE Missorui starts two juniors, three seniors; they lost by four at Bradley in their first road game.

    -- East Tennessee State got spanked at home 90-73 by Fresno, now they visit Crimson Tide squad just back from Alaska, where they lost final of Shhotout to Washington.

    -- Evansville lost 79-74 at Eastern Illinois Sunday, their first loss in three games. Tennesse-martin is picked #4 in OVC, but has only played Duek and two cupcakes, so hard to tell much about them.

    -- Austin Peay, with only one returning starter, is 1-3, with losses by 10-14-16 points.
