      Right Angle Sports - NCAAÊHoops - 11/23/04

      RAS Official Plays 4-1, +2.90 UNITSÊ(Recommended as 1 or 2 UNIT plays)

      *One play Tuesday:

ÊPepperdine at Long Beach State (+9, play to +7.5) - 7:30pm Pacific

This is an improved 49ers team and the first that third year head coach Larry Reynolds can call his own.Ê On paperÊthey lost 4 starters from last year, but actually five of the top eight scorers are back plus two newcomers who are better than anyone who was on the team last year.Ê I watched them play in person last year and saw them in their last exhibition game this year.Ê They have definitely progressed.Ê The twoÊmajor additions are 6-11 senior center Anthony Coleman and JC transfer forward Shawn Hawkins.Ê Coleman, a transfer from Xavier, played in only two games last season due to injury.Ê He is a bit on the thin size, but has a scorer's mentality, can shoot out to 3-point range, and has some nice face the basket moves for someone his size.Ê He is also a capable rebounder andÊshot blocker.Ê Hawkins is called by Fox Sports college hoops expert Frank Burlison, "The best offensive talent to play at Long Beach since Seth Greenberg was head coach in 1996."Ê He can shoot from distance and has the size and strength to score down low.Ê He was good enough to land his JC coach a spot on LBSU's staff and could develop into an all-conference type.Ê Head coach Reynolds has a multitude of players to mix and match at the 1, 2, and 3 spots.Ê Junior Jibrill Hodges (son of NBA 3-point champ Craig) was second on the team in scoring last year at 10.2ppg.Ê Point guard Kevin Houston was the teams top recruit a year ago and has stepped in to a starting role.Ê Senior Cody Pearson, junior Keion Kindred, and junior Louis Darby all played quality minutes last year andÊeachÊis ableÊto contribute something.Ê 6-10 JC transfer F/C Sam ByrdÊprovides added size off the bench.

      Ê

I am amazed at how overvalued Pepperdine continues to be this season.Ê Sure, the Waves have three excellent players and potentiallyÊcouldÊhave a solid season but this team still has a lot to prove.ÊÊIn recent trip to North Carolina for BCA tournament theyÊwere outscored 47-19 in the second half by an East Carolina team playing without their starting and backup center to lose by 22 points.Ê The next day they came with moreÊintensity and beat Sienna by 15 points, but even in that game they let a 27 point lead dissolve to 7 in the second half.Ê In final game they escaped with an unimpressive 1 point win over Farleigh Dickinson.Ê The Waves averaged over 20 turnovers per game in the tournament and their rebounding margin was just +0.66 despite having a distinct size edge in all three games.Ê Pepperdine projected starting center Derrick Grubb (back) remains out and I have not been able to confirm the status of 6th man Robert Turner who played just two minutes two games ago and none at all in last game.Ê He may be injured or in the coaches dog house but he is the best reserve player and only quality size off the bench.Ê This is a sandwich game for the Waves who got back from North Carolina late Friday, have three days of missed classes to catch up with (assistant coach mentioned many papers due before Thanksgiving break), and will be looking ahead to Saturday when they host nationally ranked Wisconsin in their home opener.Ê Pepperdine still has some issues to resolve and is playing too erratic to be giving this many points away from home.

      Ê

Long Beach was blown out at Charlotte in season opener but that is going to happen to a lot of teams.Ê They shot just 3-of-25 from 3-point range in the game and coach Reynolds said his team is a much better shooting team than that and I have to agree.Ê They have a good chance to show it tonight against a Pepperdine team who is known for not defending the perimeter well.Ê On a positive note, the 49ers did hold their own on the boards (43-43) vs Charlotte.Ê I look for them to bounce back and play well in their home opener tonight.Ê Long Beach scrapped and hustled their way to outright home winsÊover UCSB, Cal Poly, LMU, and UC IrvineÊall asÊunderdogs last year.ÊÊThey were alsoÊwithin single digits ofÊfive other conference teams here, includingÊleague champÊPacific.Ê With an improved team and another year in the Reynolds systemÊthere is no reason they will not do the same vs Pepperdine.Ê Take the points.

      Ê

                      dr bob -free

                      Mid American Conference
                      Kent (-8.5) 31 CENTRAL FLORIDA 17
04:00 PM Pacific Time Tuesday, Nov-23 - Stats Matchup
Kent State’s quarterback Joshua Cribbs is finally starting to show his talent, as he’s accounted for over 450 rushing yards in the last 3 games while posting decent passing stats in blowout wins over Ohio, Buffalo, and Eastern Michigan by an average score of 48-13. Winless Central Florida may be next in line for a beating, as the Golden Flashes apply to a solid 48-20-1 ATS late season road favorite momentum situation while the Knights apply to a negative 28-61-1 ATS situation that is based on their winless conference record. Despite Kent’s recent outstanding play, my math model favors the Flashes by just 6 ½ points, which is where the line opened. The public has already bet the game up a couple of points, taking away some of the line value and relegating this game to a Strong Opinion rather than a Best Bet (Kent is only a Strong Opinion at -9 or less).

                      Bowling Green (-4.5) 35 TOLEDO 31
04:00 PM Pacific Time Tuesday, Nov-23 - Stats Matchup
Toledo is very tough to beat at home, as they are 20-3 ATS here in games when they are not favored by 28 points or more, including 3-0 straight up as a home underdog. The Rockets also apply to a very good 82-30-4 ATS home off a bye situation that works especially well late in the season (37-9-1 ATS from game 10 on). Toledo also applies to a 94-44-4 ATS home underdog momentum situation and the record is 17-3 ATS when those two angles both apply to the same game. Bowling Green, meanwhile, qualifies in a negative 35-75-1 ATS road letdown situation and the Falcons aren’t nearly as good away from home (21-21 ATS) as they are at home (22-10-1 ATS), and they’re not as good against .500 or better teams (17-19-1 ATS) as they are against losing teams (23-9 ATS against teams under .400). Those angles, plus the additional home field edge, give Toledo a very good 60.7% chance of covering a fair pointspread. That would be great if the line were fair in this game. Bowling Green has one of the nation’s best offensive units (7.1 yards per play against teams that would allow a combined 6.0 yppl to an average offense) and are solid defensively (5.0 yppl allowed to teams that would combine to average 5.0 yppl against an average defense) while Toledo rates only 0.3 yppl better than average on offense (6.4 yppl against teams that would allow 6.1 yppl to an average attack) and they’ve allowed 5.7 yppl and rate 0.7 yppl worse than average defensively. The Rockets’ pass defense is especially poor, allowing 7.0 yards per pass play to teams that would average only 5.5 yppp against an average defense, so Bowling Green’s highly efficient Omar Jacobs (8.8 yppp and only 3 interceptions with 32 TD passes) should have another big game. My math model favors Bowling Green by 14 points in this game and the situations favoring Toledo are worth 10 points, so I’ll call for a 4 point Falcons’ win and suggest passing on this game.
