Remember a few years back when no one knew how good the College of Charleston hoop program was and taking the Cougars getting points was like stealing money?Ê Don't look now, but it could be a similar situation about 60 miles west on I-26.Ê SC State is coached by Ben Betts, who was an assistant under former head man Cy Alexander and before that under John Kresse at the aforementioned College of Charleston.Ê He's got all 5 starters back from an 18-11 team LY and may have more athleticism (particularly in the frontcourt) and depth than Kresse ever had at C of C.Ê So we've got the same tenacious, John Kresse style defense with more frontcourt strength, low post scoring and rebounding.Ê Throw in veteran leadership in the backcourt and it looks like a good value taking points with the Bulldogs against a mediocre (or worse) SEC team.Ê Ole Miss finished 13-15 overall LY, and just couldn't compete in the SEC where they went 5-11.Ê Rebel coach Rod Barnes is trying to transform the team into an up-tempo squad that runs their opponents off the court.Ê Bottom line is that he doesn't have the size and strength to play halfcourt ball.Ê Problem here is that I'm not sure he has the personnel to play up-tempo either.Ê Bigger problem here is that I don't see them being able to control tempo against SC State, and even if they do try to run the Bulldogs have the athletes--and enough of them--to play that way too.Ê Bulldogs win outright....

Also of interest is Air Force -11 over Jacksonville State.Ê While I don't think Air Force will be able to fly under anyone's radar this year (no pun intended), I also don't see how a 14-14 Ohio Valley team that lost 4 starters can do anything to stop the difficult to prepare for Princeton style motion offense run by the Falcons.Ê If this game was in Colorado Springs, you'd have the altitude as a factor and this would be a nice looking play.Ê In a neutral site, we'll call it a recommendation only....
