I agree with Coverboy.

MTi 5* side selections lost their luster at the end of last season. Some of their reasoning was off the wall. Stay away from their 5* Total selections. They already lost one this year.

**CALIFORNIA (-8 points or less) 76 St. Mary’s Cal 61
Cal started my College season off with a 2-Star Best Bet win last night over Riverside, as game that the Bears led 52-22 before letting the reserves finish things off in a 78-61 win as a 15 point favorite. Cal’s starters are more rested for tonight’s game than a St. Mary’s squad that is only 6 deep with 2 starters missing the first few games of the season (6 players had 28 minutes or more last night). The Gaels’ best player, Paul Marigney is one of the two starters that is out for this game, and I’ve calculated his value at 6 ½ points based on last year’s stats. Last night I stated that I thought the Bears would be improved this season despite the loss of star Leon Powe for the season and my current ratings, adjusting for Marigney’s absence, favors Cal by 7 points in this game. However, the Bears qualify in a very good 64-22-2 ATS game 2 situation. It’s also possible that I’m underrating the Bears a bit, but I’ll stick to my ratings for now. The line on this game opened at -6, but has gone up to -8. However, the situation is strong enough to merit a Best Bet at -8 points or less despite the 1 point of negative line value.

Downgrade Cal to an opinion if they become a favorite of more than 8 points.

SYRACUSE (-14 ½) 72 Princeton 51
Princeton is a very good team this season with 4 starters returning from last year’s Ivy League Championship team. Syracuse, meanwhile, has 5 returning starters and the Orange should contend for the Final Four this season after taking some time to find their groove last season. Syracuse applies to a very good 64-22-2 ATS game 2 situation tonight and they also apply in a 59-22-7 ATS home tournament final angle (those angles are 10-3 ATS when they both apply). My problem is that the line on this game has gone from -12 ½ points to -14 ½ points, which has taken away some of the line value from the play. My ratings favor Syracuse by 13 points in this game, but Syracuse would only be worthy of a Best Bet at -14 points or less. The Orange still have a profitable 56% chance of covering at -14 ½ points, but my cut-off for a Best Bet is 57%, so I’ll make Syracuse an opinion if they remain favored by more than 14 points and I’ll take Syracuse in a 2-Star Best Bet if they line goes back down to -14 points or less.

SAN ANTONIO (-10 ½) 100 Miami 84
The Heat lost their first game of the season last night against Dallas and they may be without star pointguard Dwayne Wade for this game, as he is listed as questionable with a sprained ankle. Wade has played as well as any pointguard in the league this season and Miami would go from one of the league’s best teams to a mediocre team without Wade. The loss last night also sets up the Heat in a negative 36-81-3 ATS situation that plays against teams that ended a win streak with an upset loss. This game is tough to play as a Best Bet since my line on this game if Wade does play is San Antonio by 4 ½ points and I make the Spurs by 11 ½ points if Wade does not play. San Antonio looks like a pretty good play if Wade doesn’t play, but it’s uncertain what his status is and it may be a game time decision – so I’ll consider the Spurs just an opinion tonight.
