Florida State-North Carolina State UNDER 44 - Bronze 3*
Last year these Atlantic Coast Conference schools combined for almost
100 points and 1,000 total yards as the Seminoles nudged the Wolfpack,
50-44, in double overtime.
So naturally we're on the under in tonight's televised game. Say what?
Let us explain.
Both schools rank among the top 10 in the NCAA total defense, with N.C.
State ranked second (241.6 yards per game) and Florida State not far
behind at seventh (275.2 ypg). The Seminoles are also fifth in scoring
defense, allowing 13.4 points per game.
Oddly enough, the Wolfpack only rank No. 37 in scoring defense at 20.8
points allowed an outing, but turnovers and breakdowns in special teams
deserve much of the blame.
First-year Wolfpack QB Jay Davis has struggled mightily, and the
Seminoles' defense is certainly not what the doctor ordered for an
ailing quarterback.
The last five Seminole games have all totaled 39 points or less, and
there is no reason to suspect an offensive outburst tonight. In its four road games this season, Florida State has scored 10, 17, 20 and 17
points against Miami (Fla.), Syracuse, Wake Forest and Maryland.
N.C. State clearly boasts a stronger defense than all of the above with
the exception of Miami (Fla.).
Also, the National Weather Service predicts a 30-to-40 percent chance of showers tonight in Raleigh, possibly bolstering our case for a
low-scoring game.
