                          OCTOBER 30, 2004 VOLUME 36, NUMBER 9

CALIFORNIA 56 - Arizona State 14 - (10:00 EDT) - Line opened at California minus 16, and is now minus
14½. Seems the Bears are a permanent fixture on this publication, & rightly so. This squad
is obviously the match of any team in the nation, as witnessed by their statistical domination
of top-ranked USC, a squad which has been the poster boy for the word "domination" for
the past 3 years. They are perfectly balanced, behind the leadership of Rodgers (#2 in the
nation in passing efficiency), & Arrington (#4 runner in the land), ranking #1 in total offense.
Throw in a defense which ranks 9th in the nation. The 20th ranked Devils have been a
pleasant surprise, with QB Walter among the best, but with their only mar, a 45-7 slaughter
at USC, have to figure more of the same vs this machine.
                          RATING: CALIFORNIA 89

                          CENTRAL MICHIGAN 44 - Western Michigan 24 - (1:00) -- Line opened at Central Michigan minus 7½,
and is now minus 7. We are aware of the fact that the Broncos of Western Mich covered
their last 2 games with the Chippewas by a cozy 22½ & 14 pts. However, a year ago, a pair
of CM fumbles run in for TDs inflated the final margin. Great shot at revenge here, as the
Chips, altho standing at 2-4, proved their worth a week ago, with a solid performance over
a red hot Toledo squad, covering by 18 pts, with more FDs, RYs, & PYs. QB Smith leads
this balanced attack, & should move it rather easily vs a Western "D" which has allowed
1,730 yds the past 3 wks, & which is on its worst slide (0-6 SU lately) since '96.
                          RATING: CENTRAL MICHIGAN 89

SOUTH CAROLINA 17 - Tennessee 10 - (12:30) -- Line opened at Tennessee minus 2½, and is now minus
                          2. We had originally tabled this one, in light of the fact that the Gamecocks are down to 3rd
& 4th string quarterbacking, as Pinkins (shoulder) & Newton (ankle) are ailing. Newton may
be ready, but in any case, Holtz will have his squad at fever pitch for this one. LY, Carolina
(+15) had a 371-266 yd edge over the Vols, only to lose in OT, with a pair of extra session
flags killing the upset shot. SoCaro hasn't handled the chalk role all that well thus far, but is
2-0 ATS as a dog, & has held 6-of-7 foes in check, with its 12th rated "D". Vols have
impressed only once, and the 'Cocks have had 2 weeks to prepare.
                          RATING: SOUTH CAROLINA 88

Utah 38 - SAN DIEGO STATE 13 - ( 9:00) -- Line opened at Utah minus 17, and is still minus 17. The Utes
are yet another team that we continue to ride. Why get off a horse that has covered all but
1 game this season, & which was a stellar 10-2 vs the numbers a year ago? In the '03
meeting of these 2 squads, the Utes trailed 6-0 at the half, only to score on their first six
possessions of the 2nd half, en route to a 27-6 win. The Aztecs are not as bad as their 2-
5 record would indicate, & rank 27th in the land in total defense, but it is a different story
offensively, where they rank 100th in scoring. As far as the site is concerned, note that the
Utes have won by 17, 42, & 21 pts on the road so far in '04. No, we do not jump ship.
                          RATING: UTAH 88

                          Miami-Florida 49 - NORTH CAROLINA 10 - (7:00) -- Line opened at Miami minus 21, and is still minus 21.
Sure, the Heels had an extra week to prepare for the mighty Hurricanes, but no amount of
time advantage will help in the least, in attempting to cope with this power. NC has had its
moments, to be sure, with upsets of Ga Tech & NCSt (29 & 16½ pt ******), but 5 TOs were
key to their win over the Jackets, & check deficits of 30-14 in FDs, & 577-376 in yds vs the
Wolfpack. Pretenders. UNC was stung for nearly 1,250 yds in its last 2 outings, & with the
re-emergence of that 'Cane offense that has scored 79 pts the last 6 quarters, this can
only be a slaughter. Remember, the visitor is on a 17-5 ATS run in Miami games.
                          RATING: MIAMI-FLORIDA 88

DENVER 27 - Atlanta 13 - (4:05) -- Line opened at Denver minus 6½, and is still minus 6½. Well, the
Broncos sure laid an egg in their Monday appearance with the Bengals, whose only previous
success came by a mere FG against the hapless Dolphins. That one was an embarrassment
from the moment that Denver's top-rated "D" allowed a 50-yd TD pass, midway
through the 1st quarter. Miscues were key, as 4 of Cincy's 5 scoring drives began in Bronco
territory (44, 24, 38, & 20 yd lines). You know that Shanahan won't permit a repeat of that
showing. The Falcons' 4-0 start has turned a bit sour of late, especially overland, with Vick
struggling. Denver will be ready to atone for Monday loss.
                          RATING: DENVER 88
