  • Miss America Pageant … ( and other random thoughts )

Short card tonight so I thought I'd just jot down some ideas and observations.

I just heard that this year will mark the first time that The ABC Network will not be televising The Miss America Pageant. This saddens me greatly because this will have made it 37 years in a row that I have not watched it.

Besides … I LOVE listening to it on the radio anyway.

My feeling is that some things are better off left to the imagination.

My friend Kenny insists that Chinese women make the best lovers …. He adds: " No matter how many times I do it with one, I'm always horny an hour after".

My Godson phoned me last night … he's a New Yorker in his last year of Harvard Law School . He sounded depressed so I asked him what I can do to help. He told me it was the New York Yankees . " Godfather , do you realize that it's been FOUR YEARS since the Yanks won the World Series ? FOUR YEARS !!! I'm 24 years old and the last time they won I was 20. My God you know who was president the last time they won ? … Bill Clinton , THAT'S WHO !! I'm beginning to think that they'll never win another one in my lifetime . And I'm soooooo sick of all these Red Sox fans taunting me with " Two - Hoo Thousand …. Da … Da …. DADADA … Two - Hoo Thousand … DA … DA … DADADA …. Two -Hoo

Great kid … my Godson …. He'll become a fine attorney … he's learned the art of button pushing. I'm wondering from whom he gets his sarcasm.

After seeing that ridiculous Chuck Amato staggering up and down the sidelines while his N.C. State Football Team was getting the shit kicked out of it at home last Saturday night to Miami of Florida, I really do understand his wanting to escape from the embarrassment. I sympathize with his need to be incognito in front of 60,000 fans, and his idea of blending in with the crowd is brilliant. I've never seen a more clever disguise … he puts to shame Inspector Clousseau of "THE PINK PANTHER" films of yesteryear. I think however that he should have paid the extra $ 4.00 and sprung for the big nose and the phony beard but .. hey … that's just my thinking.

One of his players was overheard saying … "With those Red Slippers and Fruity White Sun Glasses he looks more like a double order of fresh California Fruit Salad than a supposed leader of men "

So Sunday Night I hired a Private Investigator to trace his comings and goings this week, and we've called our project " OPERATION TINKERBELL" . Although it's only Monday evening I have already received news.

Early this morning "Tinkerbell " was filmed at several playgrounds just outside Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, N.C.,apparently scouting fresh young talent. My P.I . insists that given how he's dressed up - he quotes … " CB …he's hunting for talent … but his mind is definitely not on football . "

I'll keep you posted throughout the week.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs lead by All World Coach Sylvester Croom ( not to be confused with John Heisman and Vince Lombardi) defeated the Florida Gators last Saturday and Coach Zook was fired shortly thereafter.

Do any of you realize the message that the U of Florida Athletic Department is sending here ?

ANY COACH WHO LOSES STRAIGHT UP TO SYLVESTER CROOM AND HIS BULLDOGS DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE AN NCAA FOOTBALL COACH ….. PERIOD.

(I'm thinking that he does, however, have a decent shot at replacing Jim Haslett in New Orleans and should be interviewed immediately )

We can be sure that from here on in any team who respects their coach will be poised for maximum effort and bear down on Mississippi State, Big Time. Either that or it will be the coach's ass in a sling. This coming Saturday Kentucky travels to Starkville and they have been installed as only a 3 point underdog by the Linesmakers. Can you believe this ? Mississippi State beats Florida and now is only a 3 point favorite at home to a 1-6 team ? Evidently the Linesmaker feels as I do … that Kentucky can and probably will beat The Bulldogs. My money will be on Kentucky +3 and on the Money Line and if the line goes up , I'll bump up and double hit the plays.

This Sunday evening San Francisco travels to Chicago for an 8:35 PM , EST game with The Bears. If I watch some of the game I'll mute the sound ( I always do ) but I can imagine those Three Stooges at ESPN fumbling around for some exciting things to say. Maybe Paul MacGuire will get good and pissed up and tell Theisman what he really thinks of him.

Anyway, this is my " Smashed Windshield " Game of the Week and for those of you who are unfamiliar with the term …. here goes :

You and your buddy have 2 tickets on the 50 yard line . Before you enter the parking area of Soldier Field you decide to stick your faces in some nearby tavern … after all it's going to be a cold night. You accidently leave the 2 tickets on the dashboard.

After a few pops you come back to your car and see that your windshield has been smashed in … and there are now FOUR tickets on the dash.

                  Chuck Amato Update – Wednesday

My P.I . just called …. He bugged the practice field in the middle of the night, hid in the stands, and waited patiently for Coach Amato who is always the first one to arrive. Disguised as Howard Cosell complete with black and white saddle shoes, toupee, and with microphone in hand, he approached him and asked:

Cosell.: “Coach Amato , why are you the only one here ? “

Amato: “ Hey Ain’t You? ….. ummmmmmmm …. Ain’t you? ………errrrrrrrr ……. Ain’t you DEAD ? …….. How Ya Doin’ Howie ? … I’m always here first … it’s a tradition …. I like to greet the players one by one as they prepare to take the field. … Besides, SOMEONE has to set up the buffet table”.

                  Cosell: “ Buffet table ? “

Amato: “Yeah .,.. On Wednesdays I serve scungilli , calamari , shrimp , mussels and lobsters. I go to the market every morning . You know whadits like food shopping for 125 guys all BUILT LIKE A 1955 BUICK??? ... AND PLUS All the stuff gotta be fresh , Howie … otherwise …. They get THE TROTS … I can’t have THAT on the field. ….. Here gimme a hand with these chairs “

                  Cosell.: “ No clams ? “

Amato: “ Nahhh … I made them Linguini with white clam sauce at the halftime break against Miami Fla. Too many clams is no good and it is my FIRM BELIEF dat variety keeps da players interested, ya know what I mean ? Clams is strictly for halftime … you know that ! “

                  Cosell.: “ I Do ??? …. Errrrrrrrrrr …. “ You COOK for the players at halftime ? “

Amato: “ SHURE ….. Always … it’s tradition … I make white clam sauce for home games and red clam sauce away. And it’s God Damn tough cookin’ in the locker room on the road … It’s like the screen pass, Howie … the timing has to be just right … Yundastand wha I’m talkin bout ? “

                  Cosell : “ It does ? “

                  Amato: “ FO – GED – A – BAWD – IT “ …

Cosell: “ What else does the team like to eat?”

Amato: “ Oh without a doubt … My Aunt Tessie’s Rice Balls … you know … with the cheese and the meat …fuggeddabowdit …. Yeah, she gets up early every Saturday morning and make two – TREE – four – five hundred or so and brings 'em into the locker room for … ummm … you know … a pre – game snack. “

Cosell: “You allow Aunt Tessie in the locker room before a game ? “

Amato: “ Fo – GEDDA – Bowd – id …. She feeds ‘em like there’s no tomorrah … then Tessie leads the team prayer .. Like Last Saturday, fer example … They prayed to St. Gaetano “

                  Cosell: “ Gaetano? “

Amato: “ Yeah .. you know …. the Patron Saint of the fourth down conversion “

Cosell: “ You sure , coach ? … I thought it was St. Anselmo.”

Amato: Nah nah nah … Anselmo is strictly fer blocked field goals. …. Hey … here they come now! … tell you what , … meet me here tomorrah at 11 AM . I got a apperntment with my barber , Rocco. We’ll go together . Rocco is good people … I’ll slip him a DEUCE and he’ll squeeze you in with me. Amato: ( reaching into his pants ) “ Here !!! “

                  ( Cosell flinches )

Amato: "HERE - Have a pair of glasses, with my compliments !!!" ( Amato underhands a pair of his signature sunglasses at Cosell)

Cosell: (catches glasses, puts them on) “Thanks Coach!”

                  Amato: “You bet, Howie!”
