West Virginia plays its first home game in a month on Thursday when it faces a Syracuse team it hasn't lost to in nearly three years.
The 15th-ranked Mountaineers (5-1, 1-0 Big East) began this season with four straight wins -- three coming on their home field -- before falling 19-13 to No. 23 Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Oct. 2.

West Virginia rebounded to defeat Connecticut 31-19 on the road 11 days later, but coach Rich Rodriguez wasn't pleased with his team's play.

The Mountaineers had a key fumble midway through the fourth quarter when they were driving that let Connecticut get back into the game, and they continued their sloppy play with 11 penalties for 89 yards.

``It's frustrating because I see it at times in practice and I see it at times in games but we haven't been able to put it all together yet,'' Rodriguez said. ``I'm happy to be 5-1 ... but we've got a lot of things we need to get corrected.''

West Virginia has been flagged a conference-high 60 times for 591 yards, and Rodriguez said if that continues, he will start benching players.

``We discipline them and we talk about it but I'm going to have to keep hammering it home to them,'' he said. ``We're going to get it corrected. It may come to a guy getting benched if he repeatedly makes what I call stupid penalties. I'm not going to continue to play games where West Virginia beats West Virginia. We're not going to do that.''

One thing Rodriguez has been happy about is his team's ability to run the ball.

The Mountaineers compiled 309 rushing yards against Connecticut, despite playing without Kay-Jay Harris. Harris has been hobbled by both an ankle and knee sprain suffered against Virginia Tech.

Rasheed Marshall had his first career 100-yard rushing effort, Jason Colson had 111 yards on just 13 carries, and freshman Pernell Williams had 89 yards on 16 carries as West Virginia nearly had three 100-yard rushers for just the third time in school history.

Rodriguez hopes that continues in the Mountaineers' first home game since Sept. 25.

``It seems like a while and it's going to be even longer until we get to play home on a Saturday,'' he said. ``It's going to be fun to come back and I'm hoping we'll have a great crowd.''

Syracuse (3-3, 1-0) has not played since falling 17-13 at home to No. 5 Florida State on Oct. 9.

The Orangemen were determined to play well after being no match for the previous two ranked teams they had faced. They lost on the road to No. 12 Purdue and No. 14 Virginia by a combined score of 82-10 in September.

Syracuse held a 10-3 lead at the half, but allowed the Seminoles to tie it in the closing minutes of the third quarter and then gave up the winning score early in the fourth.

``We're still confident,'' tailback Walter Reyes said. ``I don't think you can find a team that played our schedule this year. We're battle tested and now it's time for us to cash in in the Big East and that's fine. We're going to be ready when we get to Morgantown.''

Syracuse leads 30-21 in the all-time series with West Virginia, but the Mountaineers have won two straight since a 24-13 loss on Nov. 10, 2001.
