The Pigskin Index is designed to give a quick comparison of the relative strength of all covered teams. To see how a game should turn out, simply compare the ratings of the competing teams and add 3 points to the home team. For example, a visiting team with a rating of 140 should be 7 points stronger than a home team with a rating of 130. 140 - (130 + 3) = 7. In neutral field games (such as the Super Bowl), no home team advantage may be appropriate.

Hope you do not mind me posting these here crswir

Iowa won two in row vs Michigan, but Hawkeyes were smoked in Tempe last week, 44-7; they're 13-9 vs pts on road, 8-2 at this site and covered five of last seven on carpet. Michigan struggling with freshman QB; they have covered 11 of last 13 when they're playing at home for second week in row. Wolverines 16-10 as home favs since 2000.

Wake Forest pulled 32-28 upset at Boston College last year, as 12-point dog, but Eagles covered eight of 11 on road and easily beat Penn State, UConn last two weeks. Wake just 6-9 vs spread at home under Grobe, but they are making plays this year (28-46 on 3rd down). Eagles allowed just seven 2nd-half points in three games so far

NC State 9-0 as road dog under Amato, 11-3 overall as dog vs spread, but Tech is 22-15 as home fave since '98 they've outscored foes 62-14 in first half this year. State held Buckeyes to 137 yards last week, but lost by 8; the new QB looked very shaky, and this is first road start. Hokies do have West Virginia on deck; better not sneak a peak ahead at unbeaten Mountaineers.

Kentucky scored 65 points in last two visits to Swamp, as road team covered five of last seven series games. UK nearly upset Gators last two years, losing by 41-34, 24-21 scores. Florida just 4-8 as home fave with Zook, as underdog is 16-1 vs spread in his SEC games. UK covered just three of last ten SEC openers.

Texas Tech trailed 21-0 at home last week to TCU, then scored 70 points in 40:00; home team lost both of their games vs Kansas, with Tech winning here 45-39, losing 34-31 in OT at Lubbock. Jayhawks covered eight of 12 Big 12 openers, but just three of last 16 league home tilts Tech is 8-3-1 vs spread last dozen Big 12 openers.

Notre Dame covered 17 of last 26 vs Pac-10; they must be licking chops to get at Washington team that allowed UCLA to run for 413 yards, week after Fresno St got three defensive TDs against them; UW allowed 73 pts in first two games. Irish 19-9 vs spread after a win, but just 1-5 vs spread last six times they laid 10+ points.

Home team won last three Oregon St-Arizona St games, with Beavers losing here by 41-24, 13-9 scores. OSU had LSU beat on road, except for kicking woes, so Sun Devils, coming off 44-7 thrashing of Iowa, better not let down. ASU is 2-8-2 vs spread last 12 Pac-10 openers. Overall, Oregon State 5-3-1 vs spread in series.

Penn State covered just two of last 11 Big 11 openers and two of seven vs Wisconsin, but road team won last three series games, with Lions winning 34-31 in last visit here, as 2.5-pt dogs. PSU looked slow on defense when they played BC on carpet. Badgers escaped Tucson as 9-7 winners last week, gaining just 262 yards; they have no takeaways in their last two games.

USC scored 93 points in whipping Stanford last 2 years; Trojans covered four of their last five post-bye games. Average total in last five series games, 59. Cardinal beat San Jose, BYU easily, easier than SC beat Cougars, but Stanford is 3-7-1 as dog of 10+ points under Teevens. Cardinal QB Edwards yet to throw pick this season.

Alabama QB Croyle out for year, so Miami transfer will make first start here (Guillon) for Tide, which is 1-5 vs spread in last six SEC openers. Arkansas covered eight oif its last 12 SEC openers. Dogs covered five of last seven series games, with Hogs winning in OT at Bama a year ago, 34-31. . Teams split Tide's last two visits to this site, where Hogs almost beat Texas two weeks ago

Home team won eight of last ten Rice-Texas games, with Longhorns winning last two by 48-7, 18-13 scores. Owls will run option and try to play keepaway, but they can't pass; they've covered three of last 10 at this site. Horns allowed 161 rushing yards vs Arkansas; with Baylor on deck, no risk that they're looking past this one
