This is known as a “serious transition”. Houston comes off a game with Army and the schedule this week includes Miami? Let me remind you the Cougars lost to Oklahoma by 50 this year and by 47 to Michigan last year. They allowed 66 points to Louisville last year and 62 to TCU. Their bowl game against Hawaii was a 54-48 final in triple overtime (Animal 5* on the ‘OVER’). They have nine starters back this year but that isn’t good as the majority of that unit yielded 36 points per game. The Cougars are the Kansas City Chiefs defensively in the college ranks. For whatever reason they are fielding the identical defense from a year ago. We know Miami will run up the score. Last week they crushed Louisiana Tech 48-0 and remember the Bulldogs had over 500 yards in their first two games, albeit against Nevada and UL Lafayette. The better question here is why in the hell would Houston schedule Miami? Here’s trouble if you’re an alumni of Houston: The game isn’t even on campus tonight as it is being played at Reliant Stadium. Army rolled up 234 rushing yards last week against the Cougars. But the problem with taking Miami in the anticipated blowout or the ‘OVER’ is the fact that Brock Berlin and the Hurricanes only threw for 167 yards last week in that 48-0 laugher. Plus you saw Berlin a couple of weeks ago against Florida State. Do you trust this guy to cover 29 on the road? I know I don’t. He looked like Kordell Stewart on a couple of those heaves. Meanwhile Miami’s defense looked like the Ravens a few years ago. But Houston is kind of tricky offensively and can throw and run very well. The Cougars averaged 34.5 points per game last year and Coach Briles might have a few tricks up his sleeves. I’ll go ‘OVER’ and hope the Cougars can put 17 on the board. I’m counting on Miami to get a defensive score or two. 2* opinion ‘OVER’ 54.
