Free Pick draws closer to Couples in "Buick"

The skys have brightened for both Torry Pines Golf Course and the Bounty Hunter's free pick, Mark Calcavechia. Calc fired a blazing 33, with 5 birdies, on the final 9 of his first round.

Couples, meanwhile, after leading by 5 strokes, fired a 37.

Here are the 36 hole totals:

Mark Calcavechia----------------38/33= 71, 1 under par.
Freddy Couples------------------32/37=69, 3 under par

And so Calc has closed to within 2 strokes of Couples.

Tiger Woods is tied with Calcavechia with a 71 on the first round.

With another birdie on the South Course, the same 18 -holes that
Couples played on Opening Day, Thursday, there is now only
one stroke separating our Free Pick, MC, from Couples.

Couples was scheduled to tee off at 10 AM (Pacific) for his second round, but is still waiting in the club house. Sound familiar?

Both Calcavechia and Couples are now 3 under par. Its all tied up with Calk continuing to mix birdies with bogeys and a few pars thrown in for good luck.

But.....he has made up 5 strokes over yesterday.

THE FREE PICK OF MARK CALCAVECHIA PICKED UP 3-STROKES TODAY ON OUR OPPONENT, FREDDY COUPLES.

FOR THE FIRST TWO DAYS MC HAD A 71 ON THURS AND A 68 TODAY.

HIS TOTAL IS : 139 for 2 DAYS PLAY.

COUPLES FIRST DAY WAS A 69, TO GO WITH A 68 TODAY FOR A
2-DAY TOTAL OF 137.

CALK MADE UP THE TRIO OF SHOTS WITH A BIRDIE BARRAGE EARLY THIS MORNING. WHEN HE TEED OFF TO FINISH HIS FIRST ROUND, CALLED BECAUSE OF FOG. AT THE TIME HE WAS AN UGLY 5 SHOTS BACK. BUT HE HAD 5 BIRDIES ON THE LAST 9 HOLES, PROVING THE OLD ADAGE ABOUT A "WOUNDED GOLFER."

NOW, IT COMES DOWN TO A 2-SHOT DIFFERENCE. FOR THE NON-GOLFERS WHO PICKED CALK WITH US, THAT SIMPLY MEANS ONE OF THE NEXT 36 HOLES CAN TURN THE TIDE.

SHOULD MARK MAKE A BIRDIE ON A PAR 4 (3) AND COUPLES A BOGEY (5)THEN THE MATCH IS ALL EVEN. I DON'T EXPECT ONE HOLE TO DECIDE IT, BUT THAT DOES GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF HOW TWO STROKES IN GOLF IS AKIN TO ONE BASKET IN B.B.

THE PROJECTED CUT WITH A DOZEN OR SO PLAYERS STILL ON THE COURSE IS ONE-UNDER-PAR, MEANING ANY PLAYER NOT AT LEAST PLAYING UNDER PAR BY A STROKE, GOES HOME.

TIGER WOODS TWO DAY TOTAL IS 136.

THE CALC / COUPLES MATCHUP SHOULD BE A REAL DOG FIGHT WITH COUPLES A MUCH BETTER PUTTER, AND CALC A MUCH LONGER DRIVER. HOWEVER, MARK HAS BEEN UNABLE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF HIS DISTANCE ON THE LONG PAR 5'S, WHERE HE SHOULD BE ON IN 2, WITH 2 PUTTS FOR A BIRDIE.

COUPLES IS RANKED AMONG THE WORST IN GREENS IN REGULATION. MEANING, IF HE COULD GET THE BALL CLOSER ON HIS APPROACH, USUALLY 30 YARDS BEHIND CALK, HE WOULD HAVE DRAWN AWAY. BUT IT WAS NOT TO BE.
