ST LOUIS (1 - 0) at ATLANTA (1 - 0)
Week 2 Sunday, 9/19/2004 1:00 PM
vs
219 ST LOUIS 46
220 ATLANTA -2.5
Analysis
Well the good news is the Atlanta Falcons are 1-0 on the season but the bad news is they barely held off the 49ers to get that win. They'll have a bigger test this week when they take on the St. Louis Rams. The Falcons are favored slightly by the bookmakers, who opened the game at -2. They are 0-1 ATS on the season, while the Rams bring a 0-1 ATS mark to the table.
Last week, the Rams' Marc Bulger hit Isaac Bruce with an eight yard touchdown toss early in the fourth quarter and St. Louis held on for a 17-10 win over the Arizona Cardinals in the season opener. Marshall Faulk gained 128 yards rushing for St. Louis (1-0, SU, 0-1 ATS). Bulger completed 23-of-34 passes for 272 yards with a touchdown and an interception (he suffered a bruise on his left hand during the game, but is not expected to miss any time). Bruce added 112 yards receiving and Torry Holt finished with 96 yards receiving.
As for the Falcons, Michael Vick looked suprisinly comfortable despite missing most of the preseason as he led the Falcons to a 21-19 win. Vick completed 13-of-22 passes for 163 yards and a score to help the Falcons (1-0 SU, ATS) to their first victory in San Francisco since 1991. Alge Crumpler was the recipient of Vick's scoring toss, totaling six catches for 82 yards. Warrick Dunn carried the ball 19 times for 63 yards.Peerless Price hauled in four passes for 62 yards and now has a catch in 72 consecutive games. Definsively, the Falcons are going through a transition with a new coordinator and head coach. Their best defensive player, linebacker Keith Brooking, isn’t 100 percent and they don’t have enough of a pass rush to rattle Bulger into throwing interceptions. The Falcons were last in the NFC against the run last year, but Mora is hoping the switch to a 4-3 will help returning linebackers Chris Draft, Matt Stewart, and Keith Brooking.
I am a bit intregied at the number the linesmarkers poted in the game making St. Louis the underdog as I believe there are a number of fundamental matchup advantages for St. Luois in this game. Perhaps, last week's 'opposite stats' created some vlue for us to play on St. Louis as they squeaked out an SU win while losing the money despite outyarding Arizona 448-260. Meanwhile Atlanta beat San Francisco despite losing the stats by 132 yards. The Rams have covered six of the last seven against Atlanta and are 7-0 ATS after a division game. Atlanta cooperates as they are 0-7 ATS in the first of BB home games and 1-7-1 ATS in Game Two of the season over the last nine years. The Rams are more talented at their core than the Falcons. The Rams won 36-0 a year ago, and the Falcons at home, were a poor 2-6 SU. Rams offense will play much better than last week and QB Vick is still struggling with the west coast offense.
Forecast: Rams 28 Falcons 14

HOUSTON (0 - 1) at DETROIT (1 - 0)
Week 2 Sunday, 9/19/2004 1:00 PM
vs
209 HOUSTON 43.5
210 DETROIT -3
Analysis
These are two of the more improved teams in the league this season and both realize a win today puts them in nice position. Lets start by congratulating Detroit for picking up its first Road win in nearly 3 years. Now the pressure is off of Detroit, but the situation has become reversed. The Lions are in a letdown mode, have injuries and are in the role of a favorite for only the fourth time in their last 25 games. They are the ones being hunted by a hungry team. The Texans are smarting and embarrassed after being upset at home by the lowly Chargers despite last weeks impressive showing by David Carr. Carr completed 19 of 25 passes for 222 yards with a pair of interceptions. Domanick Davis had 87 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries, but had two costly fumbles in the loss. The Texans had a chance late in the fourth quarter but a Davis fumble ended the drive and hopes. As for the Lions, Joey Harrington threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Az-Zahir Hakim in the fourth quarter to get that much needed victory. Harrington finished 14-of-26 for 187 yards and was also picked off once. However, the win came at a hefty cost as Lions receiver Charles Rogers suffered a fractured clavicle in the first half and is now out for the season.
Now lets be honest here the Texans are the better team but they continue to lurk underneath the radar screen. After leading the league with the most players on injured reserve last season, the Texans are healthy. The Lions suffered two key injuries against the Bears, in addition to their previous injuries at linebacker. Promising WR Charles Rogers is out after suffering a broken collarbone for the second consecutive season. This could have a ripple effect on all of Detroit’s wideouts as it puts added pressure on No. 1 draft choice Roy Williams. Rogers was QB Joey Harrington’s favorite target. Harrington tied for the most interceptions last year with 22, and now he doesn’t have his top target. Pro Bowl defensive back Dre’ Bly suffered a knee injury, too, for Detroit and may be out. He was the stabilizing element in the Detroit secondary. Without him, the Lions do not have a player good enough to play man to man against quality receivers. Carr and the dangerous Johnson can take advantage.
Forecast: DET Lions 14, HOU Texans 28
