Last meeting: Titans won 31-7 at Tennessee on Nov. 9, 2003.
Key stat: Titans are NFL-best 42-30 on the road with Jeff Fisher as coach (since '95).
Players to watch: Naperville native Chris Brown takes over as Titans' No. 1 tailback. Dolphins going with Jay Fiedler at quarterback.
The buzz: This game moved up a day to avoid hurricane, another strange development for Dolphins, who saw Rickey Williams walk out on them. Dave Wannstedt answering questions about why he traded for A. J. Feeley and isn't starting him (remember Rick Mirer?). Titans a rock of stability in comparison.
Bannon's pick: Titans 24, Dolphins 20
Lions at Bears
TV/Radio: Noon Sunday, WFLD-Ch. 32, WBBM-AM 780.
Line: Bears by 3.
Last meeting: Lions won 12-10 at Detroit on Nov. 9, 2003.
Key stat: Lions have lost NFL-record 24 straight road games.
Players to watch: Thomas Jones gives the Bears a good running-receiving threat from the tailback position, but how durable will he be? Lions quarterback Joey Harrington beginning pivotal third season.
The buzz: New Bears coach Lovie Smith is a former defensive coordinator, and he'll need his defenders to carry the load. If Rex Grossman takes care of the football, the Bears' running game will make the difference.
Bannon's pick: Bears 20, Lions 16
Jaguars at Bills
Time: Noon
Line: Bills by 3.
Last meeting: Bills won 38-17 at Jacksonville on Sept. 14, 2003.
Key stat: Jaguars have won three of four road openers.
Players to watch: Byron Leftwich needs to throw fewer interceptions (16 last year) than TD passes (14) if Jaguars are to improve. Bills want to get ball to Eric Moulds (64 catches).
The buzz: Mike Mularkey's NFL head coaching debut comes against a Jaguars team some expect to make a run at a playoff berth. Jaguars should be able to run the ball and contain Travis Henry, who has held off Willis McGahee for starting tailback job.
Bannon's pick: Jaguars 20, Bills 17
Ravens at Browns
Time: Noon.
Line: Ravens by 3.
Last meeting: Ravens won 35-0 at Cleveland on Dec. 20, 2003.
Key stat: Ravens have won 7 of 10 meetings.
Players to watch: Jamal Lewis ran for 500 yards and 9.6-yard avg. in two victories over the Browns a year ago. Ex-49er Jeff Garcia debuts as Browns' QB, but he has little to work with.
The buzz: The comeback of Deion Sanders is getting headlines, but the Ravens had a tough defense without him. Can he play offense too? Can the Browns hold Lewis under, say, 200 yards?
Bannon's pick: Ravens 20, Browns 13
Chargers at Texans
Time: Noon.
Line: Texans by 4 ½.
Last meeting: Chargers won 24-3 at San Diego on Sept. 15, 2002.
Key stat: Texans are 2-0 in season openers.
Players to watch: LaDainian Tomlinson, arguably the NFL's top all-around running back, is the Texans' top priority. Texans' WR Andre Johnson, coming of a 66-catch rookie season, could have a big day.
The buzz: Veteran Drew Brees remains the Chargers' starter, while rookie Philip Rivers catches up after contract holdout. Texans have no such worries, with David Carr looking for Johnson.
Bannon's pick: Texans 23, Chargers 14
Seahawks at Saints
Time: Noon.
Line: Seahawks by 2.
Last meeting: Seahawks won 27-10 at Seattle on Sept. 7, 2003.
Key stat: Seahawks were 2-6 on the road last season.
Players to watch: The running backs. Saints' Deuce McAllister and Seahawks' Shaun Alexander could decide the game.
The buzz: Saints finished strong a year ago and have experienced playmakers on offense, such as QB Aaron Brooks and WR Joe Horn, who can test Seahawks' revamped defense.
Bannon's pick: Saints 27, Seahawks 24
Bengals at Jets
Time: Noon.
Line: Jets by 4.
Last meeting: Jets won 15-14 at New York on Dec. 16, 2001.
Key stat: Jets are 1-2 in openers under coach Herman Edwards.
Players to watch: Carson Palmer, the top pick of the '03 draft, makes his first start. Jets will try to control the ball with Curtis Martin.
The buzz: A meeting of two teams that believe they're ready to make a run at the playoffs. If Martin can run, Jets' Chad Pennington could have a big day.
Bannon's pick: Jets 27, Bengals 21
Raiders at Steelers
TV: Noon Sunday, WBBM-Ch. 2.
Line: Steelers by 4.
Last meeting: Steelers won 27-7 at Pittsburgh on Dec. 7, 2003.
Key stat: Raiders were 0-8 on the road last year.
Players to watch: Ex-Eagle Duce Staley gives the Steelers the running-receiving threat they've been lacking. Rich Gannon still holding on to Raiders' QB job.
The buzz: Gannon, 38, has held off Kerry Collins for now, and this will be a test to see whether he can still make big plays. Probably not enough of them.
Bannon's pick: Steelers 20, Raiders 17
Cardinals at Rams
Time: Noon.
Line: Rams by 11.
Last meeting: Rams won 30-27 in OT at Arizona on Nov. 23, 2003.
Key stat: Rams have won all four meetings in last two seasons, scoring at least 27 points each game.
Players to watch: Rams' Torry Holt hopes to retain '03 form, when he led NFL with 117 catches. QB Josh McCown gives the Cardinals some hope for the future.
The buzz: Rams have health concerns along the offensive line, but injuries throughout the offense dominated Dennis Green's first training camp as Cardinals coach. Same old Cardinals.
Bannon's pick: Rams 31, Cardinals 14
Bucs at Redskins
Time: Noon.
Line: Redskins by 2.
Last meeting: Bucs won 35-13 at Washington on Oct. 12, 2003.
Key stat: Bucs have only 22 players left from team that won Super Bowl two years ago.
Players to watch: Ex-Jaguar Mark Brunell starts his comeback as a Redskin. Receiver Joey Galloway, Bucs' biggest off-season acquisition, looks for a fast start.
The buzz: Running back Clinton Portis, acquired from Denver in Champ Bailey deal, brings his 5.5 yards-per-carry average to Washington. He'll be a problem the Bucs can't solve.
Bannon's pick: Redskins 24, Bucs 20
Cowboys at Vikings
TV: 3:15 p.m., WFLD-Ch. 32.
Line: Vikings by 4 ½.
Last meeting: Vikings won 27-15 at Dallas on Nov. 23, 2000.
Key stat: Cowboys were 4-4 on the road in '03.
Players to watch: Randy Moss has been tough on the Cowboys, with 21 catches for 525 yards and 8 TDs in four games. He'll outshine Keyshawn Johnson, making his Dallas debut.
The buzz: Vikings have all the elements for a Super Bowl run. Daunte Culpepper and Moss should have big days against a Dallas defense that will have a hard time being No. 1 in the NFL in yards allowed again.
Bannon's pick: Vikings 27, Cowboys 17
Giants at Eagles
Time: 3:15 p.m.
Line: Eagles by 9.
Last meeting: Eagles won 28-10 at Philadelphia on Nov. 16, 2003.
Key stat: Eagles have won five of last six meetings, including both last season.
Players to watch: Kurt Warner, who lost his last seven starts with the Rams, gets a chance to lead the Giants. Can Terrell Owens, who 80 catches and 9 TDs for 49ers last year, get Eagles to the Super Bowl?
The buzz: Eagles should have their way with the Giants, playing their first game for coach Tom Coughlin. It will be a surprise if Giants' rebuilt offensive line can give Warner time to throw.
Bannon's pick: Eagles 27, Giants 14
Falcons at 49ers
Time: 3:15 p.m.
Line: Falcons by 3 ½.
Last meeting: 49ers won 37-31 in OT at Atlanta on Oct. 14, 2001.
Key stat: 49ers have won last three from Falcons.
Players to watch: Michael Vick is back after missing last season with a broken leg. San Francisco going with Tim Rattay, who threw 6 TD passes vs. 2 interceptions in three starts last year.
The buzz: New Falcons coach Jim Mora debuts against the team he served as defensive coordinator last year. It may be a longer season for 49ers than for Falcons, but on opening day, they're further along.
Bannon's pick: 49ers 16, Falcons 12
Chiefs at Broncos
Time: 7:30 p.m., ESPN, WSCR AM-670.
Line: Broncos by 3.
Last meeting: Broncos won 45-27 at Denver on Dec. 7, 2003.
Key stat: Broncos have won four of last six meetings, including three in a row at Denver.
Players to watch: In December win over KC, Jake Plummer completed 20 of 29 for 138 yards, 1 TD and no interceptions. Chiefs' Trent Green tries to repeat a Pro Bowl season.
The buzz: Early showdown in AFC West could be decided by 5-7 Quentin Griffin, who replaces Clinton Portis in the Denver backfield. If Broncos can still run against a KC defense that was weak a year ago, they can win.
Bannon's pick: Broncos 27, Chiefs 21.
Packers at Panthers
TV/Radio: 8 p.m. Monday, WLS-Ch. 7, WSCR-AM 670.
Line: Panthers by 3.
Last meeting: Packers won 17-14 at Green Bay on Sept. 29, 2002.
Key stat: Panthers have won both of their openers under coach John Fox.
Players to watch: Panthers' Stephen Davis tries to repeat his 1,444-yard season of 2003. Packers' Brett Favre would take another 32 TD passes too.
The buzz: The Panthers lost the Super Bowl by a field goal and open the season in an emotional environment, including the return of linebacker Mark Fields from Hodgkin's disease. If their rebuilt line can protect Jake Delhomme, they can survive a night out with Favre.
Bannon's pick: Panthers 24, Packers 23.
Colts at Patriots
TV: 8 p.m. Thursday; WLS-Ch. 7, WSCR-AM 670.
Line: Patriots by 3.
Last meeting: Patriots won AFC championship game 24-14 at New England on Jan. 18.
Key stat: Patriots have won 8 of 10 meetings vs. Peyton Manning-led Colts, including the last four.
Players to watch: Corey Dillon steps into the Patriots' backfield after an up-and-down career with the Bengals. Colts QB Manning, coming off co-MVP season, starts trying to earn his new fat paycheck.
The buzz: Patriots begin defense of their Super Bowl title with a new weapon on offense in Dillon. A bigger issue is the Colts' secondary, which is scrambling to rebuild. That's good news for Tom Brady and company.

Like last year, I press ahead to give you my unique and unmatched NFL insights. This season, I have a competitor in this dog-eat-dog world. How cute.
Two words: Bring it.
Detroit (5-11) at BEARS (7-9)
Noon Sunday, WFLD-Ch. 32
Things you should know: Contrary to popular opinion, this game is not all about ex-Bears coach Dick Jauron. No, it's about new Lions defensive coordinator Dick Jauron. Bears own the all-time series record, 83-60-5, padding that cushion during the Marty Mornhinweg era. Ah, Hurricane Marty. The little storm that never found land. But do you really think the Bears have it in them? If so, I have to believe you're full of something yourself.
The line: Bears by 3
Over/under: 39½
Final shake: Lie down. Lying down? Lions. No lie.
Tennessee (12-4) at Miami (10-6)
Noon Saturday
Things you should know: As of press time, Dave Wannstedt remained the coach of the Dolphins. Ricky Williams retired to be Lenny Kravitz's bud. And Jay Fiedler is their starting quarterback. Miami could be playing Willliam & Mary this week, and I'm picking against them.
The line: Titans by 3
Over/under: 37½
Final shake: Titans. Full disclosure: I wear Titans pajamas.
Arizona (4-12) at St. Louis (12-4)
Noon Sunday
Things you should know: Dennis Green takes over the Cardinals, who complained about working too hard in the off-season. That's always a good sign. The only complaints the Rams have is that QB Marc Bulger is a pitiful 18-4 as a starter.
Over/under: 45½
The line: Rams by 11
Final shake: Rams-a-lamading-dong. Or just "Rams."
Baltimore (10-6) at Cleveland (7-9)
Noon Sunday
Things you should know: Kyle Boller is 5-3 (. 625) in his first eight NFL starts. More importantly, he's been romantically linked to Tara Reid . But no QB in Browns history has thrown for more TDs in a season than Jeff Garcia did . . . for San Francisco . . . in 2000.
Over/under: 37
The line: Ravens by 3
Final shake: Ravens fly away, making Ravens noises. And pooping on cars.
Cincinnati (8-8) at N. Y. Jets (6-10)
Noon Sunday
Things you should know: Rub your eyes and see that the Bengals are still here. And they have Carson Palmer starting at QB. He's cute. But Jets QB Chad Pennington is cuter. Not that it matters. But it doesn't hurt. Hubba hubba. I LOVE YOU, CHAD!

Things you should know: Jaguars are 3-1 all-time when opening the season on the road. Quite a history, eh? Look for new Bills coach Mike Mularkey. He's the one in tears on the sideline by the end of the first half.

Things you should know: A bag of walnuts to the first guy who can name the Raiders' starting QB. Too late: It's Rich Gannon , who spent the off-season mummified in a vault deep below the earth. No nuts for you. Steelers' starter? Tommy Maddox. That reminds me: I need new life insurance.

Things you should know: "It's kind of interesting, because the general sense in the media is the Chargers are headed for a long season, " Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer said. "I look at that in a positive light. A long season would be three or four playoff games. " Oh Marty, Marty, Marty.

Final shake: Texans. Where my ex lives.
Tampa Bay (7-9) at Washington (5-11)

Things you should know: This is kind of interesting. Bucs QB Brad Johnson used to play for Washington. Washington QB Mark Brunell used to play for Jacksonville. Jacksonville and Tampa are both 6 feet under water.
Over/under: 38½

Final shake: Bucs in OT.
Atlanta (5-11) at San Francisco (7-9)
3:15 p.m. Sunday
Things you should know: NFL superstar Michael Vick isn't hurt (yet) and if you can name three 49er players, you're way ahead of Uncle Whizzer, kids. So stop that. You're making Uncle Whizzer angry. Now, go heat up some water and pour me some tea. I said NOW!
Over/under: 44
The line: Falcons by 3½
Final shake: Falcons. Not "Falco," "Falcons."
Dallas (10-6) at Minnesota (9-7)
3:15 p.m. Sunday, WFLD-Ch. 32
Things you should know: Saddle up with the Cowboys, who will get the usual early-season excellence from Vinny Testaverde before he fumbles it all away. The Vikings will make it to the Super Bowl, just not this decade.
Over/under: 44
The line: Vikings by 4½
Final shake: Cowboys. Bill Parcells knows what he's doing.
N.Y. Giants (4-12) at Philadelphia (12-4)
3:15 p.m. Sunday.
Things you should know: Early-season battle for these bitter rivals. And it will only get more bitter when QB Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens team up for an NFL record 11 TDs in one game. OK, I'm exaggerating. More like 7 TDs.
Over/under: 42
The line: Eagles by 9
Final shake: No exaggeration. Eagles. By 90.
Kansas City (13-3) at Denver (10-6)
7:30 p.m. Sunday, ESPN
Things you should know: This could be Broncos coach Mike Shanahan's 100th career victory. But it won't be. Chiefs return 21 of 22 starters from a team that gloriously choked in their first playoff game last season, not that I hold any grudges.
Over/under: 47½
The line: Broncos by 3
Final shake: Chiefs. I love Sunday night football. Marry me, sweetie pie.
Green Bay (10-6) at Carolina (11-5)
8 p.m., WLS-Ch. 7
Things you should know: Things you should know: Yes, OK, the Panthers were overachievers last year. Must be something in the Carolina water (Hello, Carolina Hurricanes ). They will still be good. But Brett Favre is Brett Favre. I have no idea what that means. Pass the fromage.
Over/under: 43½
The line: Panthers by 3

Southern Miss
at Nebraska
Bill Callahan's offense hasn't got that full West Coast look just yet, tossing four interceptions, but it pounded away at Western Illinois in the opener to the tune of 363 rushing yards ... as if easing the Husker faithful into the transition process. Whatever the case, it won't be so easy against a solid program like Southern Miss.
The "Blackshirts" led the way in last season's 38-14 victory over the Golden Eagles, forcing five turnovers and sending Southern Miss QB Dustin Almond to the bench after completing just 4-of-24 with two interceptions. He'll be much better in this rematch, but that's saying very little and it won't be enough to keep pace. The Cornhuskers, who led the nation in pass efficiency defense, turnover margin and interceptions last season, make it tough on most. Free safety Josh Bullocks accounted for a school-record 10 picks last year.
With just four starters back on defense, Southern Miss doesn't figure to stand in Nebraska's way, especially since it finds itself in Lincoln without the benefit of a tune-up. The Husker offensive line is something that will be difficult to contend with even with an experienced front, which is something the Golden Eagles don't have. Those zone blitzes won't get to Husker QB Joe Dailey very often.
After getting thrashed on their home field last year, the Southern Miss offense will have little confidence going into Lincoln and will struggle once again. Until Nebraska faces a more potent opponent that can exploit its weaknesses, it won't be pretty, but it will result in a string of wins.

No. 18 Auburn
at Mississippi State
The Sylvester Croom era began on a positive note as Mississippi State was able to get revved up after halftime to outscore Tulane, 28-7, in a solid and emotional, yet unspectacular victory. If the Bulldogs are able to win their SEC opener for the first time in five years and end their three-game losing streak to the Tigers, last week's celebration and drenching of Croom would pale in comparison to the postgame pandemonium in Starkville.
The Bulldogs will attempt to control the game with their backfield duo of Jerious Norwood and Fred Reid and quick tosses by Omarr Conner, but they will find the going quite difficult.
On the other side of the field, Auburn turns to new offensive coordinator Al Borges, who brings an unfamiliar offense to the SEC. Borges has one of the best backs in the country in Carnell Williams, but "Cadillac" will be hard-pressed to match the six-TD performance he had in last year's 45-13 rout over Mississippi State. However, depth figures to make a difference in this bruising contest as it did last year when the Tigers finished with 405 rushing yards.
Auburn lost some key defenders from a year ago and is light on the ambitious preseason hype this time around. The latter is a positive deletion as it led to a pair of losses to open the 2003 campaign. Tommy Tuberville has his group more focused this time around, but he'll face a Bulldog squad on a mission. This one will be tough.

No. 8 Michigan
at Notre Dame
Notre Dame entered last week's game with the promise of a successful season on the horizon, but that all came to a crashing halt in a loss at BYU, making Tyrone Willingham's seat even hotter.
Fighting Irish QB Brady Quinn did little to make anyone think of great Notre Dame arms of the past. And if it wasn't Quinn seemingly jumping around on hot sand in the pocket, it was WR Rhema McKnight playing hot potato with the pigskin. What's worse? The Irish passing attack generated all the offense on the night, as the running game was virtually non-existent.
Meanwhile, the Wolverines ended what was the nation's longest winning streak as they thrashed Miami of Ohio, 43-10. True freshman Chad Henne delivered a solid performance as a fill-in signal caller. On the flipside, the RedHawks appeared to be in a groove moving the ball early, but that quickly came to an end as the Wolverines rose to the occasion, forcing seven turnovers.
Michigan exacted revenge for a pair of upset losses in the previous three meetings by demolishing the Irish last year, 38-0, posting the first shutout in the series since Beano Cook was a lad (1902 to be exact). A trend might be taking shape.
There is no aura of home field dominance in the shadow of Touchdown Jesus any longer. Notre Dame has struggled to win and has suffered its share of humiliating losses in South Bend as well. One more is not out of the question.

Colorado
at Washington State
Both teams come into this one wiping the sweat from its brow. Escape via defense can be a thrilling thing.
Washington State had only one lengthy sustained scoring drive on the day and was unable to stop New Mexico's ground attack, but blocked a punt and picked off a pair of passes in the fourth quarter to avoid getting upset.
Colorado, on the other hand, stymied Colorado State's rushing game, allowing just 44 yards, and put an exclamation point on that effort on the last play of the game with a goal line stop that got the team a win that Gary Barnett needed ever so desperately. On the negative side, the Buffaloes allowed Ram QB Justin Holland to pass for 403 yards in just three quarters.
The opportunistic Cougar defense led the nation with 48 takeaways last season, five of which came in their 47-26 victory in Boulder. Washington State erupted for 24 points in just six minutes in that one due to Colorado miscues and a kickoff return for a score. But that Cougar defense has had to replace nine starters from a year ago and the two-deep is littered with freshmen and sophomores.
Colorado figures to be more secure with the football this time around, relying on RB Bobby Purify, who opened with an impressive 189-yard effort last week. He'll pound and slash his way to green pastures up in the Palouse, while QB Trent Klatt continues to settle in.

No. 3 Georgia
at South Carolina
This isn't the "USC" that Georgia has been waiting to tackle, but it looks like a dangerous spot for the Bulldogs nonetheless as they visit South Carolina, where Lou Holtz could be up to something, getting his magic going again.
The Bulldogs do have the weaponry to get to the Orange Bowl, especially now that freshman RB Danny Ware seems on his way to a breakout year on par with Lindsay Lohan's. Paired in the backfield with QB David Greene, Georgia's offense will do lots of damage this season, but allowing 294 rushing yards in the season opening 48-28 victory over Georgia Southern is cause for some concern.
Holtz has brought a new attitude to the field, has a wealth of players to work with and is relating to them better. His Gamecocks came out of the gate well at Vandy last weekend and stayed in constant control on the way to a 31-6 triumph. QB Dondrial Pinkins and RB Demetris Summers are playmakers that can get the job done in front of the home folks at Williams-Brice Stadium, where Georgia has a recent history of low outputs.
The Gamecock defense under the watchful eye of new coordinator Rick Minter will take it to a new level and be disruptive. He and Holtz, who is back calling the plays, proved to be a formidable pair in the early 1990s at Notre Dame.
National title aspirations come to a screeching halt as the Gamecocks pull the upset of the season so far.

Pick: South Carolina 27-24
Colorado State
at No. 1 USC
Colorado State needed to get a win last week in Boulder, because they aren't going to get one in Los Angeles. Although USC was forced to come from behind to beat back Virginia Tech two weeks ago, it was impressive nonetheless. With offseason distractions further in the rearview mirror, the Trojans have had time to rest and refocus.
Colorado State employed an aerial attack that would make USC's passing guru Norm Chow proud, getting over on the Buffaloes to the tune of 403 yards. But even if a similar experience versus USC's stingy defense was possible (which it isn't) that wouldn't nearly be enough.
The Ram defense will have Sonny Lubick playing catch-up all day as QB Matt Leinart and TB Reggie Bush do their thing, when sledgehammer LenDale White isn't plowing his way to first downs. Expect Pete Carroll's Trojans to go for the kill early while in front of the home crowd for the first time since earning a share of last season's national title.
This will be the first in a series of three blowouts (BYU and Stanford follow) for top-ranked USC, until California makes a visit to the Coliseum in October.

Penn State at B.C.
Boston College is in big trouble if it brings the same effort used last week against Ball State. A three-and-out and a muffed punt that resulted in safety just one minute into the season was a rather inconspicuous way to start, considering a restructured offensive line and backfield is also in the mix.
Things didn't get much better from there as senior QB Paul Peterson was able to only muster 135 passing yards and one touchdown, meaning the Eagles needed a long kickoff return to provide the winning margin. Eleven penalties were a bad sign as well.
Boston College's experienced defense held Ball State to just over 200 yards in total offense, but the test will be much stiffer versus the Nittany Lions.
Under the direction of new offensive coordinator Galen Hall, the Penn State attack seems headed in the right direction. Last week in a 48-10 shellacking of Arkon, QB Zack Mills threw for a pair of touchdowns, while also posting rushing and receiving scores, becoming the first player to hit the trifecta in the Joe Paterno Era ... that's only 39 years. Mills' backup Michael Robinson is likely to join him in that club this season as he is being used as a receiver and runner as well.
The 77-year-old Paterno also needs this one badly to put a halt to some recruiting victories that Boston College has had over him in recent times.
If the Lions can avoid beating themselves with mental breakdowns that crippled them in every aspect of the game last season, they could make some noise in the Big Ten.

No. 7 Texas at Arkansas
These former Southwest Conference rivals have recently renewed their acquaintance and it's as ornery as ever. Arkansas QB Matt Jones had his coming out party in last year's stunning 38-28 victory at Texas. Big plays and trickery had the Longhorns embarrassed. Postgame upside-down horn gestures by the Razorbacks and some digging up of the turf by souvenir seekers wasn't taken kindly and revenge is on the minds of the visitors.
Texas tuned up with a 65-0 thrashing of three-time Sun Belt champion North Texas, serving notice to the region. The Longhorns held Mean Green star RB Patrick Cobbs, who rushed for 1,680 yards last season, to negative yardage, while Texas RB Cedric Benson needed only 15 carries to handily out gain the entire North Texas offense 181 to 130.
The Sun Belt's leading defense a year ago, seemed to be invisible as the Horns rolled up nearly 700 yards of total offense and QB Vince Young played mistake free football.
The Razorbacks also had a blowout of their own to start the season, taking New Mexico State apart, 63-13. Although surrounded by 10 new starters, Jones picked up where he left off last season completing 13-of-16 passes and accounting for two scores. Spirits are high in Fayetteville, but the young Hogs are in for a harsh dose of reality when the Longhorns pay this visit.

Rich the Jets fan predicts an 11-5 record and expects to pound the Bengals and Chargers before savoring the good vibes during the bye week. Chad Pennington is sharp, healthy and rich, and the retooled defense has to be better. Against a quarterback making his first NFL start (Carson Palmer) and a weak 'D', what could go wrong? Ah, but these are the Jets, so hey, you never know. Underrated Bengals RB Rudi Johnson could cause trouble.

Adrian and Nick the Cowboys fans are not upbeat about this season, and it's not because they miss Quincy Carter. Dallas won't sneak up on anybody this year, and Minnesota is tough at home, going 6-2 straight-up in 2003, 5-3 against the spread (ATS).

Chiefs at Broncos

It has been brought to my attention that my picks tempt some readers to make illegal wagers. Denver has covered four of its last five against Kansas City, whose defense still stinks.

Line: Panthers by 3. O/U: 43 1/2.
Last season's Panthers embodied the screwiness that is the NFL of the 21st century. Despite coming out of nowhere to almost win the Super Bowl, they were only 10-10 ATS, including a wretched 3-8 as the favorites. They won seven games by three points or fewer, and this one could land right on the number. Can't pick a push, though.

Line: Bears by 3. O/U: 39 1/2.
Wayne and Gary the Lions fans are confident that their heroes' record 24-game road losing streak will end here. Detroit should beat the sad Bears at Soldier Field, which resembles a cross between an alien spacecraft and a giant steel toilet seat.

Line: Titans by 3. O/U: 37.
Ricky Williams sighting: Esmeralda the Psychic tells me he's running wild and free in Nepal, planning to climb Mount Everest so he can experience the ultimate high. Hasn't he already done that many times at sea level? Reeling Miami is a home underdog for the first time since December 2000, and the game will be played tomorrow instead of Sunday because of the oncoming Hurricane Ivan.

Raiders at Steelers
Line: Steelers by 4. O/U: 41.
New coach Norv Turner's team did more offseason shuffling than a dealer at a Texas Hold-'Em tournament. Like a guy awaiting the flop, Norv has no idea what kind of hand he'll have. Neither does anybody else. If Tommy Maddox minimizes his interceptions, which may be asking a lot, Pittsburgh will score enough. RB Duce Staley was a nice addition.

Chargers at Texans
Line: Texans by 4 1/2. O/U: 43 1/2.
If anything happens to LaDainian Tomlinson, San Diego could achieve negative perfection. Even with him, 0-16 doesn't seem unreachable. Houston was 6-2 ATS at home last year and could ascend to mediocrity in its third season.
The pick: Texans.
Cardinals at Rams
Line: Rams by 11. O/U: 45 1/2.
For the 16th time in 17 years, the Cards open on the road. Must be because the league hates to see an empty stadium in Week 1. Arizona was 0-8 ATS away last year, when the Rams were 6-2-1 ATS at home, including a 37-13 rout of the Cards.

Bucs at Redskins
Line: 'Skins by 2. O/U: 38 1/2.
Yes, Joe Gibbs is a legendary coaching genius, but how much talent has he inherited? I doubt that Gibbs will do what Bill Parcells did in his first year in Dallas. Both teams come off atrocious seasons. At least many of the Bucs remember what it's like to win.

Seahawks at Saints
Line: Seahawks by 2 1/2. O/U: 45.
Seattle is the wise-guy choice to win the NFC, but first the Seahawks must learn to win on the road (2-7 last year, 4-4-1 ATS). Not even Esmeralda knows what to expect from the wacky Saints on opening day, but I have to take somebody.
The pick: Seahawks.
Jaguars at Bills
Line: Bills by 3. O/U: 35.
Some say the best way to pick the NFL is with a coin. Here's a classic toss-up, with Buffalo getting the generic 3-point edge for being at home. The Bills beat the Jags by 21 in Orchard Park last year, so maybe Jacksonville will be more motivated. Is that an insight?

Line: Ravens by 3. O/U: 37.
The last time we saw Deion Sanders, he was avoiding contact as if the guy with the ball had a contagious disease. The over/under for the season on tackles by Prime Time is 3½, not counting times somebody trips over him while going out of bounds. Jamal Lewis ran for a record 295 yards and 205 yards against the Brownies last year. This time, he'll get 195, tops.
The pick: Ravens.
Falcons at 49ers
Line: Falcons by 3 1/2. O/U: 44.
Michael Vick didn't show much aptitude for Atlanta's new West Coast offense in preseason. Facing San Francisco's defense will accelerate his learning curve. Former 49ers defensive coordinator Jim Mora Jr. should have a happy homecoming in his debut as Atlanta coach.
