I've seen many short term trends in regards to line movements in my thirty years of gambling but few, if any, statistical systems work in the long run.

        Good luck this season.

              Football Newsletter

              Sunday, September 5

              SYRACUSE at PURDUE

Syracuse is 4-11 ATS as a road dog since 1999. The Orangemen, who are only 9-17 overall against the number outside of the Carrier Dome the last five seasons, do have a nice 9-4 spread mark in their last 13 road openers.

Purdue is 24-11-2 ATS as a home favorite under coach Joe Tiller. The Boilermakers, though, have covered only four of their last dozen non-conference tilts.

              KENTUCKY at LOUISVILLE

Kentucky is 10-4 ATS in its last 14 road games and the Wildcats have covered five of their last seven non-conference road affairs.

The visitor in this series has covered four of the last five meetings, including Louisville’s 40-24 win last year in Lexington.

The Cardinals have covered just once in their last nine home openers.

              HOUSTON at RICE

Houston, which went 7-4-2 ATS in 2003, has won and covered the last two meetings, including a 48-14 win last season. The Cougars are on runs of 10-4 SU and 9-5 ATS versus the Owls.

Houston, however, is a sorry 5-20 ATS in its first lined game since 1980.

Rice is 13-7-1 ATS as a dog since 2001. The Owls closed last season on a 5-0-1 spread run.

              FRESNO STATE at WASHINGTON

Fresno State is 16-3 ATS in its last 19 games as a non-conference dog. The Bulldogs have also covered five of their last six openers, and seven of their last eight against Pac-10 teams.

Washington has covered 13 of its last 18 non-conference home games. The Huskies, though, are only 3-14-1 ATS in their last 18 as a favorite.

              UNLV at TENNESSEE

UNLV has cashed the Vegas ticket just once in its last six games as a non-conference dog. The Rebels have covered three of their last four against SEC teams, including a 31-14 win over Arkansas in the 2000 Las Vegas Bowl.

Tennessee has covered seven of its last nine home openers, but the Vols are a mere 6-13-1 ATS in Knoxville since 2001.

Free Play for Sunday, September 5, 2004

                    Fresno St. +1 vs. Washington

Former offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbertson took over a Washington team that was expected to compete for the PAC-10 title in 2003. They didn’t even come close, failing to earn a bowl bid thanks to untenable losses to bad teams like Arizona and Nevada, finishing the campaign with a hugely disappointing 6-6 mark. And the Huskies enter 2004 with diminished expectations, a sign of a rebuilding year or perhaps a long term decline of the program. The team has no experience at quarterback, a completely rebuilt right side of the offensive line, and a non-existent running game that has averaged less than three yards per carry over the past three seasons. It’s not like the defense doesn’t have questions as well. The front seven is extremely young and inexperienced, particularly the defensive line which has three new starters. That means that the Huskies are likely to struggle against the run again this year, after allowing more than 200 yards per game on the ground over their last five games in 2003. Fresno State has proven that they can compete with, and beat, BCS schools on the road. In the past four seasons, Pat Hill’s club has outright victories over Cal, Colorado, Oregon State (twice), and Wisconsin, along with losses by four points or less at UCLA, Wisconsin and Oregon. The Bulldogs are 7-1 ATS in their last eight tries on the road at BCS conference schools. That’s certainly not a bad track record of competitiveness! And, this year, Fresno is loaded, their best team since 2001’s eleven win squad. Fresno has both the best offensive and defensive lines in the WAC. QB Paul Pinegar has all five starters returning on the offensive line. They have a very strong pass rush and quality depth in the secondary. This team has both the mindset and the personnel to go into Husky Stadium and show Washington how far they have really fallen. But this line has fallen too far, too fast to make this a starred selection – what was a very attractive play at +4.5 is considerably less attractive at +1.5… and the line is still falling.

                    Recommendation: Fresno St.

                        5* NCAA DOG FOR SUNDAY
                        Message: Tennessee vs UNLV

                        UNLV
                        Tennessee ?20.5

I don?t think Hollywood could write a script that would be as eventful as Coach Fulmer?s offseason. The bad blood between Alabama and Tennessee has reached a new and very intense level. Those problems and distractions hopefully will not carryover to his football team and he can focus on the business at hand. Which will be to rebuild a program that has been blown out the last two years in their bowl games and has obviously under achieved by Tennessee standards. Tennessee is only returning nine starters from last year?s team. They are very young at the skill positions, using two freshmen quarterbacks and no dominant run game to fall back on in case these kids have the all to familiar growing pains of playing quarterback at this level. The defense is very young and lost four of their top six tacklers from last year?s team. UNLV on the other hand has bought into Coach Robinson?s program and as well they should, he was very successful at USC winning a National Championship and building a program that was a force to be reckoned with at the very highest level of college football. UNLV had a great start to the 03? season by traveling to Wisconsin and knocking them off 23-5. UNLV had the lead against BYU with less than 5 minutes to go and lost in overtime. When they played San Diego St. they had a 1st and goal inside the 5 yard line and couldn?t punch it in and lost 7-0. Colorado State game they lose by 1 after missing a game clinching field goal CSU drives and scores a TD with 2:00 minutes to go in the game, I see a team that was in the game everytime they suited up to play. I know that was last year well good coaching shows up every year. Neyland Stadium will be rocking on Sunday but the task at hand might be larger than they expect. Tennessee has Florida in two weeks and Fulmer will not want to show his hand in this spot with Florida waiting in the wings. We all know that Tennessee has been very costly to our wallets in recent years going a miserable 6-11-1 ATS as chalk since 01? at Neyland Stadium. They have failed to get the cash in five straight hosting Non Conference Opponents and are 1-7 ATS vs Non Conference Foes overall. UNLV under Coach Robinson have been money, posting a very solid 5-1-1 ATS as a double-digit dog on the road. When we broke this game down and looked at these facts and talked with our people at Tennessee we believe that they put themselves in a situation where UNLV could shock the world, at least the Tennessee World and UNLV walk away with a huge, huge win here!

                        5* UNLV +20

                        As Always Good Luck!

winning points (3-0 last 3 posted CF plays)

                              Syracuse at Purdue
Some very suspect defenses are gonna
get very tired in the second half playing
                              in 88-degree heat!

Purdue lost a boatload of defensive talent
to the NFL, and the replacements are not
going to do well against the Syracuse
                              ''freeze-option'' offense, which will
                              enable Syracuse tailback Walter Reyes
to have a 150-yard or better game, and
open up opportunities for big gains on
reverses that Syracuse loves to run.
