Friday NFL&NCAA Plays

Crappy day yesterday, a rare losing effort:
NFL 1-1, -.2 Unit

Once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away there was a time when finding winners in NFL preseason play was a bit simpler, if not as opportunistic in regard to volume of plays. There were always key spots that a coach would have zero interest in W's and only cared that his veterans were focused and healthy going into the real games in September. A series or two in the 1st Quarter and then it was done for the starters. Marv Levy made a ton of money for many people in preseason because he could care less what happened in the games and his Bills were a great team to fade, even when they were going to consecutive Super Bowls and losing every one. FYI, it is likely you will never see a run like that again, even though they lost.
With free agency and high-priced free agents, salary caps, luxury tax, coaching changes and five fewer rounds of the NFL Draft to work with, there is much more pressure to find the "diamonds in the rough" and see who can help your team at a price you can afford. Pressure from owners to win immediately and fill those luxury suites to pay for the new stadiums have changed the reasoning behind what preseason is about. In Week Four of this mess, most teams want to get out healthy and injury free. The only action left is for long snapper, special teams and backups positions. To find a good wagering opportunity requires many hours on the web trying to find out who plays, who sits and which coach gives a fuck.
With that in mind, a couple of plays based on this concept...

3* Tennessee Titans -6
3* New Orleans Saints -5.5
2* Bengals/Colts OVER 40

The reasoning for these plays is similar to me... teams that have proven that the games actually matter. Jeff Fisher stated before the Dallas game that this game was the true test he was pointing to and the Titans STILL covered the number in Dallas, even with Testaverde looking like the 2nd coming of Bart Starr. His team ****** the number in preseason at an amazing rate and I am not bucking that trend now. The Packers are nursing injuries in the secondary and offensive line so my expectation is that GB wants to get in, get it over with and get out of there in one piece and get ready for Carolina on Monday Night. I hate laying anything over 4 in preseason but I think the Titans cover the number by 10.

The Saints will not be playing Aaron Brooks tonight among others, but both Todd Bouman and J.T. O'Sullivan have shown that they can move the team reasonably well. My biggest issue is Miami left several starters in Florida, left for Louisiana this morning and the players that did travel may be more worried about Hurricane Frances and their families and homes back in Florida than this game. We won't even discuss the Dolphin running game, averaging 1.2 Yards Per Carry so far with Travis Minor, at 180 pounds (!)trying to bust through a terrible offensive line to daylight. Neither Feeley or Fiedler are gamebreakers and they have no one to throw to if they were. The Superdome did replace that asphalt driveway known as Astroturf last year with a better surface, but the Dolphins have historically played poorly on the fake stuff and are more worried about ACL's and MCL's than winning. No depth on either side of the ball for Miami will keep the rotations busy trying to stay injury free. The Saints by 14.

In Cincinnati, two teams with questionable defenses will close out the preseason trying to fine tune before the games that count begin. The Colts have looked very sluggish offensively so far and some of that is due to what teams discovered in the AFC Championship Game, when the Patriots harrased the smaller Indy wideouts with their corners bumping at the line and shut down the passing game. The new rules of contact downfield will create a ton more penalties and automatic 1st downs that will be converted into points. Most defenses are still adjusting to the new rules so drives will be extended and points will be scored. With both teams being fairly strong offensively, I think we have an OVER 40 and possibly over 51.

Did anybody see the 49ers score 24 points last night on a single drive??? Three TD passes called back on the same drive and they settled for a FG after all that. The game STILL went way over...
