  • USC/ V. Tech

Like everyone else around here, I am getting very psyched up for College and Pro Football Season to start. The first taste of real action happens this weekend when USC takes on V. Tech on Saturday. I have been breaking this game down for a couple of weeks now and here is what I have found so far.

USC has a heisman trophy type QB in its backfield but is he that GOOD or is it b/c of who he has around him. If Mike Williams is re-instated (which is a good possibility) then he is getting even more help then he would have had. The running game for USC is a 3 headed monster. These guys would all be starters on most teams but here they will splilt the load which means someone is always fresh. The WR are unproven behind Williams but they have shown flashes of brillance. The big question mark for the Trojans is the O line. This is the weak link on Offense and is why they won't repeat as Co-National Champs. The right side of that line is in big trouble. On Defense the Trojans need to replace their two top DE. While they also need to replace both Corners but they do return both safties. USC will have great special teams due their depth. The coaching is top-level and most of the assitants are returning. Overall ten starters need to be replace but still a whole lot of talent!

    V. Tech will have Randall starting at QB and their will be no dobut it will remain that way with Marcus Vick suspended. Randall was great the first 6 games last year but struggled BIG TIME the rest of the way. Tech also loses All-World RB Kevin Jones but a big time high school recruit is stepping in. Tech also loses its starting FB from a year ago and the WR corp is a BIG question mark. They also lost their starting C and G from the O-line. The Tackels on the line are very strong!! On defense the Hokies are replacing both DE. Thier LB corp is the strength of this their D. Their secondary could be in HUGE trouble. Last year the CB starting opposite of Dangelo Hall was burned A LOT. This year Hall is not their to cover up the other side of the field. This team has great Special Teams as well, which is do to the coaching more than talent. The Hokies do have a new PK.

Hope this helps!!!! Will have my choice on Saturday. Good luck!!

There is massive public money rolling in on USC, almost forced to take the Va Tech Jokies if you want to play the game. I am waiting for Fresno St.'s 1st game, in which they will upset the Washington Huskies. I hope you punish the man with whatever team you take.

        Usc/Vt

Does anyone else feel that 59 on the total seems high? QB has arm problems and favorite receiver isn't reinstated yet? And on top of that both teams have a fairly decent reputation for fielding good defenses! Just a thought! All opinions welcomed. HC

The King has left the house for good!!!!

          LINE MOVEMENT

www.scoresandodds.com shows that the USC/Va Tech game opened at USC -15.5 and is now -18. More amazingly according to that site the over/under has drop 11 points from an opening total of 59.5 to 48.5! Assuming that movement is accurate I have never seen such a line movement or anything close to it. Can anyone confirm the line moved that significantly? Also, assuming the huge move on the total, does that influence anyone's decision on the total play?

The total has dropped due to both of USC's QB's are pretty banged up and Mike Williams is doubtful.

            Public starting to pound VT.

              Prediction from Fox Sports web-site

Why to watch: It's the opening game of the year and what you've been waiting eight months for. This is also the first time we get to see USC do its thing after being anointed by everyone as the biggest, baddest program in college football. How will the Trojans handle the pressure of being number one? How will Virginia Tech represent itself as one of the newest ACC teams? Last year at this time most were hailing Auburn as one of the teams to beat for the national title before USC set the tone for its championship campaign with a dominant win. The unheralded Hokies would love nothing more than to flip the script on USC and reestablish the program as one of the college football elite.

Why USC might win: Does Virginia Tech have the offensive playmakers to keep up with the Trojans? Even with all the losses at receiver and without RB Hershel Dennis USC has one of the most athletic and talented offenses in the nation. This is one of the few teams Virginia Tech won't be able to outrun.

Why Virginia Tech might win: No one is expecting the Hokies to do much of anything against the seemingly unbeatable Trojans. This is unfamiliar territory for a program used to dominating before late October and the motivation will be more than there to show the world that this is still a top team. USC is still trying to break in a relatively new receiving corps and needs to get the overall timing back. Remember, there is no preseason in college football to get time to tune up and the Trojans are vulnerable just like everyone else.

Who to watch: All eyes will be on USC's Heisman front-runner Matt Leinart, but the more intriguing player to watch should be Virginia Tech QB Bryan Randall. The senior has seen it all and done it all facing some of the best defenses in college football over the last few years. This is a young, young, young Hokie receiving corps that should have big problems with the talented Trojan D. If Randall doesn't come up with the game of his life, this could be ugly.

What will happen: USC will be a stunningly well-oiled machine considering it's still August, but Virginia Tech isn't going to simply roll over and die. There will be a few moments where this will look like a great game just waiting to bust out, and then the Trojan defensive front seven will take over and dominate. Don't be stunned if this turns into a track meet for a quarter or so.

              CFN Prediction: USC 34 ... Virginia Tech 20 ... Line: USC -17.5
