08.12.04 PADRES (PEAVY) +125 at Cubs (Clement)

Yes! I feel so good today I am giving away one of my famous underdogs as the free play! Right now Jake Peavy is about as hot as a guy can get. The guy has given his team 6 quality starts in his last 10 outings, the last 2 back-to-back, and the Padres have gone 4-1 in his last 5 road games with a minmal 1.42 era. Matt Clement is the hard luck guy of the year as the Cubs just don't hit when he takes the ball. There is some bad luck involved there for Clement, but, it is what it is, and it takes a toll on a guy, mentally if not physically. Versus Peavy it could just be another bad luck day, but the Cubs don't start with an offense likely to hit Peavy anyway. Take the odds

Big Al's 2-game EARLY afternoon MLB package.
On Thursday, our 2 selections include the Cincinnati Reds at 12:35 pm, and the San Diego Padres at 2:20 pm.

1.) Cincinnati--The Reds fall into a system of mine that has an effective win percentage of 60%. This is an action play...you don't need to specify pitchers, but it's worth noting that Wilson Alvarez has pitched much worse on the road (5.20 ERA) than at Dodger Stadium this year, and I think he will struggle again this afternoon.

2.) San Diego--The Padres will hand the ball to Jake Peavy, and Peavy's been brilliant this year (8-3, 2.15 ERA), with even greater success on the road (1.70 ERA). His ERA over his last 3 starts is 1.80, and he has 18 strikeouts and just 3 walks and 11 hits over his last 2 games. Matt Clement will get the ball for the Cubs, but he has not been sharp of late. He's lost his last 2 starts, and was awful 6 days ago (6 runs and 4 walks in 5 innings). Take the San Diego Padres. Good luck, as always...Al McMordie

Ted Lilly of Toronto has pitched very well all year, and especially well lately. On the other hand, Cliff Lee of Cleveland got off to a great start, but is floundering at the moment. Lee has allowed 20 earned runs in his last 15 innings and I will look to play against him until he turns it around

                  Thursday, August 12

                  Atlanta at Baltimore

Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick, who suffered a broken right fibula last year in an exhibition game versus Baltimore, will start and probably play just one series according to coach Jim Mora. Rookie Matt Schaub from Virginia will follow and play into the fourth quarter. Journeyman Ty Detmer will finish under center.

Several starters, including tight end Alge Crumpler, linebacker Chris Draft, defensive end Brady Smith, and defensive lineman Ed Jasper, will miss the contest due to injury or illness. Five of the team’s top eight defensive linemen on the pre-camp depth chart are out, and starting left end Patrick Kerney is a game-time decision.

Starting fullback Justin Griffith, who suffered a concussion in a scrimmage versus Tennessee last weekend, is listed as probable. Wide receiver Brian Finneran will also play despite recently breaking the tip of his left index finger.

Mora hopes to play his starters, aside from Vick, for about 15 plays.

Baltimore quarterback Kyle Boller is expected to start and take anywhere between 12 and 20 snaps. Kordell Stewart, signed in the offseason, will follow and play a series or two into the third quarter.Rookies Josh Harris and Brian Gaither, who are vying for the No. 3 quarterback spot on the team, will finish the game.

Aside from running back Jamal Lewis and tackle Jonathan Ogden, both of whom are expected to see limited action tonight, the starting offense will play for roughly a quarter.

The same can be said for the starting defense, although linebacker Ray Lewis may not go that long. Starting cornerback Chris McAlister and linebacker Peter Boulware are out.

                  Game Trends

Baltimore is 5-2 SU and 6-1 ATS the past seven meetings, including a 2-0 sweep both on the field and in Vegas in preseason play.

Six of the past seven meetings have stayed under the posted total, including both preseason battles.

After an 11-2 ATS run in preseason action from 2000-02, Atlanta went 0-4 ATS last year.Baltimore has dropped seven of its last 11 exhibition contests to the oddsmakers.

                  Chicago at St. Louis

Chicago quarterback Rex Grossman is expected to play the opening quarter against St. Louis. He has been resting a sore arm in practice this week. Back-up journeyman Jonathan Quinn will work the second quarter and into the third. Former Ohio State signal-caller Craig Krenzel will finish up under center for Chicago and first-year coach Lovie Smith, who served as defensive coordinator the past three years for St. Louis.

Chicago linebacker Brian Urlacher and running back Anthony Thomas are out with injuries.

St. Louis, which scrimmaged with Chicago last weekend, plans to play starting quarterback Marc Bulger at least one quarter. Veteran Chris Chandler is expected to play the second and third quarters with Jeff Smoker finishing things out. The Michigan State rookie has impressed coaches in training camp and scrimmages.

St. Louis coach Mike Martz indicated that his team would go easy on running back Marshall Faulk so as not to get him too banged up. With Lamar Gordon recovering from ankle surgery, Arlen Harris and first-round pick Steven Jackson are expected to handle the majority of the rushing duties.

Offensive lineman Orlando Pace, who is involved in a contract dispute, will not play.

St. Louis has been battered along the defensive line with Leonard Little and Bryce Fisher nursing minor injuries. Consequently, expect rookie defensive lineman Bernard Holsey to see extended playing time.

                  Game Trends

Chicago has covered seven of the last 10 meetings, winning and covering both preseason tilts in that stretch.

Five of the last seven meetings have stayed under the posted price.

The Bears were 0-4 ATS last preseason, and Chicago is a dismal 2-4 SU and 1-5 ATS the past three preseasons on the road.
