I love threads like this and love to hear non-Yankee opinions.
You are completely right, the Yankees don't care about money at all but they knew that Contreas was never going to be good here. The whispers have been there since the end of last year that he didn't have the mental make-up to play in NYC. They thought maybe he would be able to after his family got here but after one good start he then went out and pitched terriable against the Mets. So the Yankees decided to shop him quietly. Chances are Loiaza is gone after this season. The Yankees don't look at him as anything more than a 5th starter, and almost every team in MLB would love to have him as a 5th starter. And why isn't he the answere as the 5th starter? The only way we don't win the divison is if the Yankees' other four starters, line-up and bullpen are horriable and go into a 20 game losing streak. This move wasn't made for Loiaza to win the Yankees anything at all. He could lose all his starts from here on out and the Yanks still win the divison. The fact is that the Yankees couldn't get anything better than Loiaza for Contreas without throwing in more money. Plus who else is out there besides R. Johnson that was worth giving more money too? I don't think Benson, Zambrano were worth it and the Marlins would not have sent Penny here just for Contreas and cash. As weird as it seems, this was purely a salary dump by the Yankees. Give the Sox Contreas and 4 mil in cash for Loaiza. Loaiza can't hinder the Yanks quest for a championship b/c he will never pitch in a big spot in the playoffs. In fact Loaiza might not even be on the roster in the playoffs. I think the trade benefits both teams. But time will tell.
