                  Calgary Article

The following is an article postd August 6 on thesportsnetwork.com. FYI, Calgary did beat winnipeg 49-27 on Friday August 7, 2004.

Around the CFL: Time for Calgary to get started
                  By Dan Ralph, CFL Editor
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - The Calgary Stampeders have lost five straight and are languishing in last place in the West Division with a league- worst 1-5 record.

And Matt Dunigan, the Stampeders rookie head coach and general manager, has no one to blame but himself.

For it has been Dunigan who has made the questionable trades, sent too many decent players packing and hired offensive co-ordinator John Jenkins knowing full well Jenkins relied on a pass-oriented offense that gave the run only a token glance. Essentially, it has been Dunigan, the GM, who has done Dunigan, the coach, no favors.

Dunigan wasted little time putting his stamp on the club. Shortly after arriving in Calgary, he joined forces with Ottawa GM Eric Tillman on a huge, eight-player deal. The Stampeders landed linebacker John Grace, offensive tackle Seth Dittman, defensive lineman Fred Perry and quarterback Romaro Miller and sent defensive back Anthony Malbrough and linebacker- defensive end Kai Ellis, the negotiation rights to both Canadian kicker Sandro Sciortino and import defensive tackle Jerry Johnson as well as the second overall pick in the 2004 CFL Canadian college draft.

Acquiring Miller did address one of Calgary's needs, which was strengthening its quarterback corps, but giving up Sciortino and the second overall draft pick was bizarre. Sciortino was a rookie Canadian with plenty of years ahead of him and seemed the logical heir apparent to veteran Mark McLoughlin, who was contemplating retirement. And with this year's CFL Draft seemingly being a deep one, having the No. 2 pick assured Calgary of a player it could build around for years to come.

But not only did Ottawa address its need for a kicker -- American Lawrence Tynes finished tied for the CFL scoring lead last year before signing with the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs -- but the Renegades also used the No. 2 selection on offensive lineman Ibrahim Khan, an Ottawa native who starred at Simon Fraser University.

Then, mysteriously, Dunigan opted to cut both Miller and Perry, meaning he gave up four players and a first-round pick for Grace and Dittman.

And last week, Dunigan's decision to trade Sciortino came back to haunt him as Sciortino booted a 31-yard field goal with 2.6 seconds remaining to cap a 10- point rally over the final 1:54 and give the Renegades a 31-30 victory over the Stampeders.

Shortly after that loss, Dunigan gave Jenkins his walking papers. The move wasn't surprising as Calgary's offense under Jenkins was tied for seventh in scoring (131 points) and last in rushing (169 total yards or 28.2 yards per game). Dunigan said he was forced to make the move because the players had stopped believing in Jenkins' offense. Even with the heavy emphasis on the pass, it was evident the Stampeders didn't have the horses to make it work as Calgary was in the middle of the pack in CFL passing (fifth, averaging 321.7 yards per game)

But Dunigan should've known this was coming. Jenkins has quickly worn out his welcome throughout the CFL with his pass-first philosophy. What's more, Dunigan played under Jenkins and has seen this happen first-hand.

However, Dunigan's questionable decisions don't stop there.

It was Dunigan who opted to release linebacker Alondra Johnson, a veteran who long was regarded as the heart and soul of Calgary's defense, offensive lineman Fred Childress (who signed with Saskatchewan last week), running back Saladin McCullough (the team's rushing leader last year who is on the Roughriders practice roster), linebacker Willie Fells and receiver Darnell Kennedy (Calgary's leading receiver last year). It was Dunigan who traded veteran cornerback Davis Sanchez, a Canadian who is among the CFL's top defensive players, to Montreal and it was Dunigan who decided to let such veterans as receiver Kamau Peterson, defensive lineman Demetrious Maxie, linebacker Otis Floyd, offensive linemen David Heasman and Bobby Singh and punter-kicker Duncan O'Mahony all leave town as free agents.

To be fair, Dunigan has made some good personnel moves. The addition of veteran linebackers Scott Coe and Brian Clark, both free agents, has paid off nicely, as has the acquisition of first-year kicker Charles Hebert (11-of-14 field goals, 43.2-yard punting average). But the thing with Hebert is he's American. Other CFL teams have Canadians handling their kicking chores, meaning the Stampeders are employing a Canadian elsewhere in a spot usually vacated by an American. Now, that might not sound like a big deal, but consider that the Stampeders' Canadian depth isn't particularly impressive and it does become a bigger factor.

Just how deep is Calgary's Canadian content? The Stampeders are starting Denis Montana at receiver. Sure, Montana is a veteran and has good wheels, but he's nothing more than a journeyman player at best. How else do you explain why the 33-year-old Montreal native has played for six different CFL teams (and three of them twice) during his nine-year career?

So when Dunigan, the coach, takes a look around at the deplorable state of his football team, he need only point the finger of blame at the GM.

THANKS FOR THE PICK SP I WILL BE ON IT WITH YOU, YOUR PAST RECORD IN BIG GAMES SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. KEEP ROLLING ALONG MAN.
