    Mike Nowlin, Marc Langdon

Langdon went 0-4 yesterday, so he is due.

If anyone is getting Mike Nowlin, please post him.

Worst week of the year so far for me. Usually dependable cappers posted here have had it rough.

      Texas Rangers at Baltimore Orioles
      Sunday, August 8, 2004 1:35 P.M. EDT EST

The return of pitching coach Ray Miller has had a big impact on Baltimore's staff in general and Sidney Ponson in particular. The O's have won Sidney's last 3 starts with he himself picking up three of the wins. Back the Birds!

Vegas Experts Tip of the Day

Oakland Athletics at Minnesota Twins, Sunday, August 8, 2004, 2:10 P.M. EDT EST

The A's Mark Mulder has finally shown some chinks in his armor with a 5.32 ERA over his last three starts. Carlos Silva's ERA over his last three is 2.91. The A's are just 7-13 when playing on the road off a road loss to the same opponent. Minnesota is 13-10 at home off a home win over the same foe

              WinOnBaseball.com - Sunday - 8/8/04

Welcome to our first annual service free trial!

-- WinOnBaseball handicaps Major League Baseball exclusively.

-- All plays with analysis, along with current and past season records, will be updated weekly on the "Records" page of our website.

-- All records will be documented at National Sports Monitor (*********.com)

-- NEXT UPDATE will be sent before 6:00am Pacific on Monday, August 9th.

              Season record: 197-203 -21.86 UNITS

              UNDER 8 MIL (CAPUANO)/FLA (WILLIS) +109 - 1 UNIT - 12:05pm Pacific
Both teams have struggled against lefties. Both pitchers have been pitching pretty well as of late, although both slipped a bit in their last starts. I don't think either team will score much while the starters are in. Factor in the park, and the runs scored should be minimal.

              OVER 10 TOR (BATISTA)/NYY (LIEBER) -101 - 1 UNIT - 10:05am Pacific
Prior to his last start, Batista was showing signs of burnout, and he responded by giving up 5 ER against Cleveland. I think his ineffectiveness should continue. Lieber has been slumping, as his sinker hasn't been sinking. Toronto's lineup is very capable against groundballers like Lieber, and there are no signs that Lieber will come out of his slump. I expect both starters to give up a fair number of runs to push this over.

              OVER 9 BOS (WAKEFIELD)/DET (ROBERTSON) -109 - 1 UNIT - 10:05am Pacific
A look at Robertson's July numbers shows three good starts and two bad ones, with the end result a 2-2 record and 5.40 ERA. He gave up 38 hits in 28.1 IP, with 10 walks (1.69 raio) and 16 Ks, while giving up 4 HRs. So he's been giving up lots of hits, lots of walks, 1.2 HR/9, without a good strikeout rate. This is not a recipe for success, and he could get lit up by the Boston offense. I'm not too confident in Wakefield's abilities against Detroit, so the Tigers may put up some runs also.

              OVER 10 TEX (ROGERS)/BAL (PONSON) +104 - 1 UNIT - 10:35am Pacific
Baltimore has struggles against lefties, but Rogers is in a big time slump right now. In July, he had a 7.52 ERA and he gave up 43 hits in 26.1 IP, with 15 Ks. Opponents hit .371 against him in July. I wouldn't be surprised if he's pitching with an injury. Ponson looked like he was getting back on track until his very ugly start against Seattle his last time out. I expect both teams to score while the starters are out there.

              OAK (MULDER) -141 over Min (Silva) - 1 UNIT - 11:10am Pacific
Silva pitched a complete game shutout against the Angels in his last start, but he wasn't overly impressive in doing so. He gave up 11 hits and walked two, while striking out only three. He kept the ball on the ground and the Twins got six double plays, tying a team record. He gets outs by putting the ball in play because he can't strike anyone out. Sooner or later, those balls will find the holes, and the runners he puts on will score. A pitcher with these charateristics will not pitch well consistently. In July, his HR rate was 1.4/9, which led to his 5.46 ERA for the month. Oakland is very adept at OBP, so they will put runners on. Additionally, they hit a lot of HRs. Mulder has dominated the Minnesota hitters, plus he's a lefty, and I like lefties against the Twins

                Umpire Angles

Here are some plays related to facts and tidbits about certain umpires. EACH PLAY WORTH 1 UNIT FOR TRACKING PURPOSES. TOTALS AND ML's only.

                -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Baltimore Orioles -116

Umpire Gary Cederstrom loves his home teams. When he is BHP, the HOME TEAM has won 14 and the ROAD TEAM only 8. When the HOME TEAM is favourite by -105 to -120, they are 4-1 with Cederstrom.

Kenny Rogers (TEX) has an ERA of 5.75 as a ROAD UNDERDOG this season and has a lifetime ERA of 5.15 versus the Orioles. He has given up 21 ER's in his last five starts.

Sidney Ponson (BAL) is easy to fade here but hold it a sec. He is 4-1 this season as the HOME FAVOURITE with an ERA of only 3.82. He is 6-0 lifetime versus Texas.

                New York Mets-St.Louis Cardinals 'Over' 8 +105

Umpire Rob Drake has produced 14 OVERS and only 7 UNDERS this season. When the total is set at 7, 7.5 or 8, the 'Over' is 5-1. He allows an average of 304.2 pitches per game 10.79 runs per game. He does call alot of strikes but with some of the superstar hitters here, it shouldn't be a problem.

Al Leiter (NYM) is facing a Cardinals team that averages 5.8 runs per game at home versus Lefties. Leiter is capable of great games, however 4 of his last 7 road starts have gone over. The Mets have gone 'Over' in 8 of their last 10 games.

Jason Marquis (STL) is now an ace? Hardly. His ERA is 4.28 at home this season and 5.46 lifetime versus the Mets. He faced the Mets earlier this season and lasted only 5 innings, while giving up 3 ER's. The 'Over' is good in six of the Cardinals last 10 games.

                Milwaukee Brewers-Florida Marlins 'Under' 8 +109

Umpire Brian Runge has produced 5 OVERS and 13 UNDERS this season. When he is BHP, an average of only 7.84 runs per game are scored and only 274.6 pitches are thrown. 64.07% of all his pitches are called strikes. When the total line is set between 8 and 9.5, the 'Under' is 9-1.

Chris Capuano (MIL) *wilted in tough conditions at Miller Park in his last start. A thunderstorm forced officials to close the roof despite hot temperatures, and Capuano pitched four scoreless innings before allowing a home run in the fifth and four more runs in the sixth. He has a 3.91 ERA in day games (from MLB.com).

Dontrelle Willis (FLA) won his lone career start against the Brewers. He is 4-5 at home and 4-2 on the road. Hiis ERA is 3.75 on the road and 4.08 at Pro Player Stadium. Dontrelle is capable of pitching a gem like Valdes did yesterday.

                Philadelphia Phillies-Los Angeles Dodgers 'Under' 8 +103

Umpire Derryl Cousins has produced 6 UNDERS and only 2 OVERS. When the total is set between 7 and 9.5, the 'Under' is 4-0. The only runs he usually allows are to the starters.

Brett Myers (PHI) has an ERA of 4.62 as a ROAD UNDERDOG but the 'Under' is 6-2 in those games. He is 1-1 lifetime versus the Dodgers with an ERA of only 2.93. Three of his last four starts have gone 'Under'.

Brad Penny (LA) made his Dodgers debut and didn't allow a run, giving up only two hits in eight innings against the Pirates on Tuesday. He has an ERA of 2.96 as the HOME FAVOURITE and has an ERA of 3.63 lifetime versus the Phillies. 7 of his last 10 starts have gone 'Under'

I think Langdon went 1-3 yesterday, still pretty bad, I think he threw another 1-3 stinker earlier this week. Check fleetfox's post on the power rankings and the dunkel index, they have been hitting a good win % lately as well as some of the freebies

Mark Mulder will try to become the first 16-game winner in the Major Leagues when he takes the mound for the A's on Sunday in the third game of a four-game series against the host Twins.
Mulder, who is 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA in six starts at the Metrodome, beat the Yankees, 13-4, in his last start, allowing eight hits over seven innings.

In the second game of the series on Saturday, Tim Hudson was sharp early in his return to the rotation, but the Twins rallied for three runs in the sixth inning and held on for a 4-3 win.

TEXAS (Rogers) +$120 over BALTIMORE (Ponson)

Kenny Rogers (13-4, 4.29 ERA) has been as steady as a rock for
Buck Showalter all season long. He's 7-3 on the road and 3-1 in the day with 1.62 ERA and a .224 BAA and the Rangers are 16-7 (+$945) in his 23 starts. Texas is 43-30 (+$1915) against righthanders while Baltimore is 14-21 (-$1020) vs. lefthanders averaging 1.6 RPG less (5.7 vs. 4.1, a difference of almost 30%). Texas salvages the final game of the series.
