Hudson & Santana
Nothing really fancy about this choice. We are basing it on the pitching match-up, the pitching match-up and also the pitching match-up. First and foremost, there may not be a more dominate pitcher in the Major Leagues right now than the Twins’ Santana. His latest run is nothing short of incredible. Over his last eleven starts, Santana has pitched 82 innings and given up just 33 hits and 14 earned runs. That translates into a microscopic 1.53 ERA during this stretch.
But that only tells half the story. Far more indicative of Santana’s dominance during this time is his jaw dropping 112/18 - SO/BB ratio. For the season overall; Santana carries a 3.30 ERA, a miniscule 0.983 WHIP and boasts an eye-popping 173 strikeouts in 153 innings pitched. No one is hurling it better than Santana right now. No one!
On the other side of the equation is the A’s Hudson. We’re pretty sure you’ve heard of this guy, but we’ll quickly review his numbers just in case. Oakland’s Hudson enters this contest with a 2.90 ERA and 1.242 WHIP. In 13 career starts against the Twinkies, he boasts a 2.43 ERA and 1.157 WHIP. That doesn’t bode well for a Minnesota team that is hitting just .254 with a meager .291 OBP over their past seven games.
And for you trend players, here are a few of interest to bolster the argument. Minnesota is 46-57 (o/u) in 2004 overall and 30-40 (o/u) vs. right handed pitching this season. Note too that the Twins are 1-6 (o/u) their last seven home games when the total is between 7 and 7.5. And get this … Oakland is an incredible 5-21 (o/u) vs. AL Central opponents this season.
That is an 81% “Under” trend!!! Given the two aces we have taking the hill and coupling it with some compelling technical support; it is hard to imagine this contest producing many runs.
