ANAHEIM ANGELS (46-40) AT TORONTO BLUE JAYS (39-48), 1:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Anaheim - John Lackey (6-8, 4.85) Toronto - Miguel Batista (8-5, 3.85)

(Sports Network) - John Lackey tries to win his third straight decision as the Anaheim Angels aim to complete a three-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays today at SkyDome.

The last time the Angels swept the Blue Jays in a three-game series in Toronto was May 4-6, 1989 at Exhibition Stadium, less than a month before the official opening of SkyDome.

Anaheim won 5-4 Friday night and yesterday walloped the Blue Jays 11-2 as Bengie Molina's grand slam highlighted a seven run seventh inning. Chone Figgins finished 2-for-6 with three RBI for the Angels. Molina also had two hits and scored two runs for Anaheim, winners in four of its last five.

Angels starter Kelvim Escobar (5-5) earned his first win since June 3 in his first appearance against his former club, tossing 5 1/3 innings of five-hit ball. The righthander yielded only two runs, struck out nine and walked three to end a personal four-game losing streak that spanned six starts. Escobar had pitched for the Blue Jays from 1997-2003.

The Angels enter today's action in third place in the AL West, 2 1/2 games behind division-leading Texas and 1 1/2 games in back of Oakland.

Lackey is 2-0 over his last four outings and that includes his only relief appearance of the season, on June 27 when he threw a scoreless inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The righthander threw seven solid frames in a triumph over the White Sox on Tuesday.

During his career, Lackey is 1-1 with a 5.60 ERA in three starts against the Blue Jays.

Reed Johnson had two hits and an RBI for the Blue Jays yesterday. Toronto had won three in a row before this series.

Miguel Batista tries to win his fifth straight start as he pitches this afternoon for Toronto. The righthander has already established a career-high winning streak and the Blue Jays have given Batista plenty of run support during his winning streak, as they have outscored opponents by a 34-11 margin. He has also won six straight starts at SkyDome, last losing at home April 16 against Baltimore.

Most recently, Batista threw six solid innings in a triumph over Seattle on Tuesday. His only career outing against Anaheim resulted in a defeat as he gave up eight hits and five runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Eric Hinske has a career-high 12-game hitting streak for the Blue Jays

The Blue Jays swept a three-game series versus the Angels at SkyDome May 24-27. Toronto has won five of the last seven meetings overall and six of the last eight at SkyDome.

    OAKLAND ATHLETICS (47-38) AT CLEVELAND INDIANS (41-45), 1:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Oakland - Barry Zito (4-6, 4.76) Cleveland - Cliff Lee (8-1, 3.95)

(Sports Network) - The Oakland Athletics and the Cleveland Indians conclude their three-game set at Jacobs Field today.

This season has not been up to par for Oakland lefty Barry Zito, but he will take the hill this afternoon with a chance to improve upon his rather disappointing 4-6 record and 4.76 ERA. Zito has given up 117 hits in 104 innings of action and lost his most recent start against Boston on July 6th after yielding six earned runs on nine hits in only four innings.

Zito has started one game against the Indians so far this season, and he did not figure in the decision despite pitching eight shutout innings of three-hit ball. For his career, the southpaw is 2-0 against Cleveland with a microscopic 0.76 ERA in three games.

Slated to oppose the Athletics for Cleveland in this contest is Cliff Lee, and he brings a sensational 8-1 record and a 3.95 ERA into this game. Lee has surrendered 94 hits in 100 1/3 innings of action and picked up a win over Texas on July 6th after giving up only one earned run on four hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Lee's only career appearance against the Athletics came earlier this season, and he did not figure in the decision of that game despite pitching 6 2/3 scoreless innings of four-hit ball.

Last night, Erubiel Durazo's grand slam highlighted a seven-run sixth inning and helped Mark Mulder earn his 10th straight win, as the Athletics thumped the Indians by a 16-7 final.

Mulder (12-2) got the win despite one of his worst outings of the season. The lefthander yielded six runs on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out nine and walked three. The last time Mulder yielded as many runs and hits was on May 4 against the Yankees when he was knocked around for seven runs on 13 hits in a no-decision.

The 10 straight wins for Mulder ties him with four other pitchers for second in Oakland history. Catfish Hunter's 13 in row in 1973 is the club's all-time record. Mulder, who is also tied with Texas' Kenny Rogers for the league lead in wins this season, last lost on April 28 -- a span of 13 starts.

Eric Chavez, in his second game back off the disabled list, went 3-for-4 with three runs scored for Oakland, which ended a four-game slide and avenged a ninth-inning loss to the Indians in the series opener on Friday night.

Durazo drove in a season-high five runs, ending 2-for-3, for the A's, who also ended a four-game losing streak to the Indians. Mark Kotsay added four hits and three RBI, as Oakland moved to 3-5 on its current nine-game road trip.

Travis Hafner went 4-for-4 with a homer, four RBI and three runs scored for the Indians, who have lost three of four and six of eight.

Cleveland's Jake Westbrook was named to the AL All-Star team Saturday, replacing injured Boston pitcher Curt Schilling.

Omar Vizquel of the Indians ended 1-for-4 to extend his hit streak to 13 games.

Prior to Saturday's game, the Indians had won all four contests versus Oakland this season in their last at-bat.

The Athletics have won 12 of 21 matchups with the Tribe since the start of the 2002 campaign.

TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS (42-44) AT NEW YORK YANKEES (54-31), 1:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Tampa Bay - Mark Hendrickson (6-6, 4.27) New York - Mike Mussina (9-6, 5.20)

(Sports Network) - The New York Yankees will attempt to complete a four-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays this afternoon in the Bronx.

Tampa will give the ball to Mark Hendrickson today for what will be his 18th start of the season. Hendrickson is 6-6 so far with a 4.27 ERA, and he is coming off a sensational performance against Baltimore last time out in which he allowed six hits over eight shutout innings. The 6-ft-9 lefty is certainly an opposing figure on the hill, but he has only struck out 30 batters in 99 innings of action.

Hendrickson is 0-2 against New York this season with a 6.94 ERA, and he is 1-3 all-time versus the Yankees with a 6.86 ERA.

Mike Mussina is the scheduled starter for the Yankees today, and although he does own a solid 9-6 overall record, the veteran righthander's 5.20 ERA certainly leaves room for improvement. Mussina last started a game on July 6th against Detroit and was lit up for seven runs on nine hits in six innings. He has been bothered by injury, a major reason he has surrendered 131 hits in 107 1/3 innings.

Mussina is 0-2 against Tampa this season with an astronomical 11.00 ERA, somewhat overshadowing the fact that he is 11-5 all-time against the Devil Rays with a 3.65 ERA.

In the third game of the series yesterday, All-Star Derek Jeter smacked a three-run double to snap a seventh inning tie, lifting the Yankees to a 6-3 victory over the Devil Rays.

Alex Rodriguez added a two-run blast into the left-field upper deck for the Yankees, who have taken three straight after dropping two in a row and won despite just getting five hits on the day.

Jon Lieber (7-5) was solid on the mound, allowing two runs on nine hits. He fanned five in seven innings to earn the win. Mariano Rivera worked a perfect ninth to nail down his 32nd save of the season.

Dewon Brazelton surrendered just four hits over 6 1/3 innings. He allowed four runs while striking out three to absorb the loss for Tampa, which has dropped three straight and four of six.

Tino Martinez finished with two RBI and Aubrey Huff added an RBI to pace the Devil Rays offense. Tampa has now dropped nine of its last 10 games at Yankee Stadium.

Tampa Bay is reeling of late as the club fell to 4-7 in July after going a scorching 20-6 in the month of June.

The Yankees lead the majors with 33 come-from-behind wins this season.

Tampa Bay had been 8-2 versus first-place teams during a 32-13 stretch before losing the first three games of this series.

The Devil Rays, who are in the midst of an 11-game road trip, are 19-26 outside Tropicana Field this season. Meanwhile, the Yankees are 32-12 at home this year.

New York has won eight of the 11 matchups with Tampa this season and has taken 17 of the last 21 in the series. The Yankees are 25-7 over the last 32 games versus Tampa Bay in the Bronx.

KANSAS CITY ROYALS (30-54) AT BALTIMORE ORIOLES (37-47), 1:35 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Kansas City - Jimmy Gobble (4-6, 5.28) Baltimore - Rodrigo Lopez (6-5, 3.58)

(Sports Network) - The Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals will play the rubber match of a three-game weekend set this afternoon at Camden Yards.

Jimmy Gobble will get the ball for Kansas City this afternoon, and the 22- year-old lefty hopes to bounce back strong after being touched for six earned runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings of action en route to a loss against Minnesota in his last start. For the season, Gobble is 4-6 with a 5.28 ERA, but the team has won half of the 16 games he has started.

It certainly comes as no surprise that the young hurler will be facing Baltimore for the first time today.

Slated to oppose the Royals is Baltimore righty Rodrigo Lopez, who is 6-5 this season with a 3.58 ERA. He leads the club with his six wins, one fewer than his total for all of last season. Against Tampa Bay on July 6th in his most recent outing, Lopez was handed a loss after giving up three earned runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Lopez threw the ball well against Kansas City back on June 30th, retiring the final 15 batters he faced after giving up two runs in the first inning. For his career, the hurler is 2-0 against the Royals with a 1.38 ERA.

In yesterday's game, Daniel Cabrera threw seven shutout innings to lead the Orioles to a 7-2 victory over the lowly Royals at Camden Yards.

Cabrera (6-3) was brilliant in replacing scheduled starter Sidney Ponson, who was forced to the bench with a groin injury. The 23-year-old Dominican allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out five.

Rafael Palmeiro hit a two-run homer and Miguel Tejada drove in a pair of runs with a double for the Orioles, who snapped a three-game skid and evened the three-game set a win apiece.

Luis Lopez finished 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the win.

Mike Sweeney homered for the Royals, who have lost 14 of their last 16 games. Kansas City has been outscored, 110-39, during the skid.

Cabrera is 3-0 in five starts since June 15.

Palmeiro has 5,106 total bases, the 13th-highest total in baseball history.

The Royals are 9-27 in day games, including 3-14 on the road.

Baltimore is 20-25 at home this season, while the Royals are 11-30 as the visiting team.

The Orioles have taken four of six meetings with Kansas City this season and are 19-8 against the Royals since the start of the 2001 campaign.

TEXAS RANGERS (48-37) AT BOSTON RED SOX (48-37), 2:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Texas - Ryan Drese (4-5, 3.82) Boston - Tim Wakefield (5-5, 3.97)

(Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox are riding an incredible offensive streak heading into the All-Star break and today will try to complete a three-game sweep of the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park.

Boston has won five in a row and during that time has outscored its opponents 51-16. So far in this series, the Red Sox have banged out 21 runs and 34 hits.

Last night, Manny Ramirez was 4-for-5 with two homers and five RBI as the Red Sox thumped the Rangers, 14-6. The Red Sox pounded out a season-high 21 hits.

Boston's offensive explosion foiled Kenny Rogers' bid to become baseball's first 13-game winner, as he had an eight-game win streak halted. Rogers (12-3) was shellacked for nine hits and eight runs over just 1 2/3 innings. It was his first loss since May 9, spanning 12 starts. The lefthander has now allowed 16 hits and 13 runs over seven innings in his last two starts.

****** Damon wasted little time in extending his hitting streak to 15 games, slicing a single to get the Sox started in the first inning. Damon is on an unbelievable tear in his last seven games. In that span he is batting .579 (22-for-38) with three homers, eight RBI and 12 runs scored. He went 3-for-6 with three runs scored last night.

Red Sox second baseman Mark Bellhorn tied a career high with four hits, including a homer and had three RBI. Nomar Garciaparra had four hits, including a homer and had three RBI and scored three times. Jason Varitek homered and finished with three RBI, while David McCarty joined the hit parade with three of his own and scored once.

Hank Blalock belted a grand slam for the Rangers, who have dropped six of their last 10 contests. Texas holds a one-game lead on Oakland in the AL West.

Ryan Drese will be on the mound this afternoon for Texas. The righthander is 0-1 over his last three outings and has two straight no-decisions. Drese will be pitching on only three days of rest. He lasted only four innings on Wednesday at Cleveland, allowing six hits and five runs -- four earned. He has yet to win on the road this season, going 0-4 in nine starts.

During his career, Drese is 0-1 with a 7.29 ERA in five games (4 starts) against the Red Sox.

With a victory today, the Red Sox will equal a season-high winning streak as they captured six in a row April 23-29.

Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield will take the mound today for the Red Sox. He is 1-0 over his last four outings and is coming off a victory against Oakland on Tuesday when he threw seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits. He is 6-10 with a 5.55 ERA in 22 games (15 starts) all-time versus Texas.

Texas has not won at Fenway since August 20, 2002, dropping seven straight and 17 of 19 in Boston.

The Rangers swept a three-game series from the Red Sox in May in Arlington. Texas has won five of its last seven versus Boston going back to last year.

    DETROIT TIGERS (41-45) AT MINNESOTA TWINS (47-39), 2:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Detroit - Jason Johnson (6-7, 4.60) Minnesota - Johan Santana (7-5, 3.89)

(Sports Network) - The Detroit Tigers and the Minnesota Twins will conclude a four-game weekend set at The Metrodome this afternoon.

Jason Johnson is coming off perhaps his best pitching effort of the season, as he picked up a victory over the Yankees on July 6th thanks to eight strong innings of work. Johnson allowed only one earned run on six hits in that tilt, thereby improving his season stats to 6-7 to go along with a 4.60 ERA. On a down note, the Tigers have lost 12 of the 18 games that Johnson has started overall.

In two games against Minnesota this season, Johnson is 0-2 after giving up 12 earned runs on 15 hits in 7 1/3 combined innings of work. For his career, however, the Detroit hurler is 5-2 with a 4.96 ERA against the Twins.

Slated to get the ball for Minnesota today is Johan Santana, and he brings a 7-5 record to the mound to go along with his 3.89 ERA. Those numbers were certainly helped on July 6th when Santana pitched a complete game three-hit shutout against the Royals. In 115 2/3 innings of work, the lefty has 125 strikeouts and only 29 walks.

Santana is 1-0 against Detroit this season with a 4.91 ERA, and he is a perfect 5-0 all-time against the Tigers with a sensational 2.47 ERA.

Last night, Nate Robertson struck out seven in 6 2/3 strong innings, and the Tigers got solo homers from four different players on the way to a 4-2 victory over Minnesota.

Omar Infante and Ivan Rodriguez belted solo homers to build a 2-0 lead for Detroit, while Dmitri Young and Marcus Thames went deep after the Twins had tied the game.

Robertson (8-4) yielded two unearned runs on seven hits and two walks. Ugueth Urbina got three outs in the ninth for his 14th save after Al Levine and Jamie Walker combined for 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Brad Radke (5-5) took the loss despite striking out a season-high eight batters without a walk in six innings. He gave up three runs on five hits.

Detroit picked up its fourth win in five games following a five-game slide. The Twins have dropped consecutive games on the heels of a four-game winning streak.

The Tigers already have 41 victories this season after winning just 43 all of last year.

The season series between the Twins and Tigers is tied at six wins apiece, but Minnesota is 50-18 against Detroit since the start of the 2001 campaign.

SEATTLE MARINERS (32-53) AT CHICAGO WHITE SOX (45-38), 3:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Seattle - Jamie Moyer (6-5, 4.24) Chicago - Freddy Garcia (5-8, 3.42)

(Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners will attempt to snap an eight-game losing skid and avoid a three-game sweep as they take on the White Sox in Chicago today.

Veteran lefty Jamie Moyer will get the ball for the Mariners tonight, and he hopes to improve on his mediocre results to date of 6-5 with a 4.24 ERA. Moyer is averaging fewer than six innings per start, but the 41-year-old is still a typically steady performer. That wasn't the case in his last outing however, a loss to Toronto in which he was victimized for seven earned runs on 10 hits in five innings.

Moyer did not figure in the decision of his only previous start against the White Sox this season, and he yielded three earned runs on seven hits in five innings. For his career, the veteran hurler is 5-6 against Chicago with a 4.47 ERA.

Former Mariner Freddy Garcia will take the hill for the White Sox in this game. The righty is just 5-8 this season, but his 3.42 ERA is a more accurate reflection of how he has pitched. Garcia was last in action on July 6th and picked up a loss to Anaheim after yielding four earned runs on seven hits in eight innings. Although he is just 2-5 on the road, Garcia owns an impressive 2.84 ERA on the opposition's field.

This game will mark the first time that Garcia has ever faced Seattle as a major league pitcher.

Yesterday, Mark Buehrle pitched eight solid innings and Paul Konerko had a homer and two RBI as the White Sox edged the Mariners, 3-2, at U.S. Cellular Field.

Buehrle (9-2) allowed two runs on nine hits with two strikeouts to record the victory. Shingo Takatsu worked a perfect ninth to nail down his fourth save of the 2004 season.

Joe Crede added an RBI for the White Sox, who have won three straight after losing five in a row. Chicago won despite collecting just three hits off loser Matt Thornton (0-2).

Jolbert Cabrera and Bret Boone each had an RBI for Seattle, which has dropped a season-high eight straight.

Prior to the game, Chicago placed first baseman/designated hitter Frank Thomas on the 15-day disabled list with left ankle tendinitis. The move is retroactive to July 7.

Thomas will be fitted with a special brace and he must rest the ankle for two- to-three weeks. If the pain does not subside, season-ending surgery becomes the most likely option for Thomas.

Konerko has hit 16 of his 22 homers at home this season.

The Mariners have dropped 11 straight on the road.

While the White Sox are 1/2 game out of first place in the AL Central, the Mariners are a staggering 16 games back in the AL West.

Chicago holds a 3-2 edge in the season series between the two teams, somewhat overshadowing the fact that Seattle has won nine of the last 14 meetings overall.

      ATLANTA BRAVES (44-42) AT PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (46-40), 1:35 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Atlanta - Russ Ortiz (9-6, 3.44) Philadelphia - Randy Wolf (3-4, 3.24)

(Sports Network) - Russ Ortiz tries to win his fourth straight start as the Atlanta Braves aim to keep their series winning streak alive today, when they play the Philadelphia Phillies in the rubber contest of a three-game set today at Citizens Bank Park. It marks the final game for both teams leading to the All-Star break.

The Phillies will go into the break atop the National League East. Larry Bowa's team heads into today's action two games ahead of the Braves and New York Mets, while the Florida Marlins are 2 1/2 games off the pace.

The Braves, who posted a 4-0 victory yesterday, have won four straight series after losing five straight series from June 8-24.

Ortiz has looked dominant in his last three outings, as the 30-year-old righthander has given up just one earned run in that time, covering 21 2/3 innings. The Braves have outscored their opponents 15-1 in that span. Ortiz allowed three hits in seven shutout innings in a 1-0 triumph over the Montreal Expos on Tuesday.

Ortiz lost his only start this season versus the Phillies, surrendering nine hits and five runs in six innings on June 5. The Braves lost that game 5-3 at Turner Field. During his career, Ortiz is 5-4 with a 4.15 ERA in 13 games against the Phillies.

Yesterday, Mike Hampton pitched eight scoreless innings and Charles Thomas went 3-for-4 with a pair of homers to pace Atlanta to the shutout. Hampton, who has won back-to-back starts for the first time this year, was brilliant as he limited the high-powered Philadelphia offense to only five hits. Thomas, who had a two-run homer in the seventh and a solo blast in the fifth, recorded his first-ever multi-homer game.

Rafael Furcal added a solo home run for the Braves, who have won five of their last six games. Furcal, who has 10 homers this season, has already hit three in this series after stroking two three-run shots in Friday's 7-6 loss in 10 innings.

All 10 of Atlanta's runs in this series have come from home runs.

Atlanta outfielder J.D. Drew extended his hitting streak to 10 games, one shy of his career-high set in May 2001.

Paul Abbott took the loss after he was charged with two runs on five hits over six innings.

Randy Wolf gets the start this afternoon for the Phillies. The lefthander is 1-3 over his last eight outings and is coming off a defeat on Tuesday to the Mets when he allowed nine hits and three runs in 4 2/3 innings. He is 4-7 with a 4.05 ERA in 17 games (15 starts) all-time against the Braves.

The Phillies are 8-5 on a 14-game homestand, while Atlanta has won six of its last seven the road.

The season series is even at 5-5 between the Phillies and Braves.

PITTSBURGH PIRATES (39-46) AT MONTREAL EXPOS (30-56), 1:35 P.M. (SAN JUAN)

Probable Starting Pitchers: Pittsburgh - Josh Fogg (6-6, 6.18) Montreal - Scott Downs (0-3, 7.94)

(Sports Network) - With the All-Star break looming, the Montreal Expos will close out the Puerto Rico portion of their 2004 slate today, when they finish up a four-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Hiram Bithorn Stadium.

Montreal has registered a 7-13 mark in Puerto Rico this season, including taking two of the first three in this series. The Expos, who are currently on a 29-game stretch away from Olympic Stadium in Montreal, picked up a 4-0 win over Pittsburgh Saturday.

Rocky Biddle threw five scoreless innings in his first start in almost two years to pace Montreal to the win. Biddle (1-4), making his first start in a Montreal uniform, allowed just two hits and struck out three with one walk.

Montreal relievers Claudio Vargas, Joe Horgan and Luis Ayala combined to allow just two hits over four scoreless innings to finish the shutout.

Jamey Carroll knocked in two runs with a double for the Expos, who won for just the second time in six games. Carl Everett registered a pair of hits in the winning effort.

Jose Vidro missed his fourth consecutive contest for the Expos with a sore right knee. Vidro isn't likely to play in today's game.

Montreal will send 28-year-old lefthander Scott Downs to the hill today. Downs has lost all three of his starts since being called up on June 24. However, it was hardly Downs' fault that he lost Tuesday to Atlanta, as he allowed just one unearned run through 6 1/3 innings in an eventual 1-0 loss. The southpaw gave up seven hits, while fanning four and walking three.

Downs has gone to the hill twice in his career against Pittsburgh, posting an 0-1 mark with a large 9.90 ERA. The hurler will be looking to become the first Expos southpaw starter to earn a win since Matt Blank defeated the New York Mets on June 21, 2001.

Surging righthander Josh Fogg will take the mound for the Pirates this afternoon. Since an 0-4 start to the season, Fogg has ripped off six wins in his last eight decisions. Fogg hasn't allowed more than two runs in any of his last three starts, including a no-decision against Florida last Tuesday. Fogg held the Marlins to eight hits and two runs over five innings, while fanning and walking two.

Fogg has made only one career start against Montreal, as he allowed nine hits and three runs over seven innings of a loss.

Pittsburgh starter Kip Wells (4-6) took the defeat on Saturday. Wells allowed six hits and four runs over 6 2/3 innings of action, while fanning four and walking three.

The Pirates managed just four hits in the contest. Pittsburgh All-Star shortstop Jack Wilson, who leads the National League with 118 hits, went hitless for the second consecutive night.

Pittsburgh has gone a season-high 93 straight innings and 10 consecutive games without making an error.

The Pirates are 8-4 versus the NL East this season, and 21-24 on the road this year. Pittsburgh is 3-3 so far in a stretch of 14 conseutive games against the NL East.

This is the first series between the teams this year. Montreal won three of the final four meetings last season.

      CINCINNATI REDS (46-41) AT MILWAUKEE BREWERS (45-40), 2:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Cincinnati - Jose Acevedo (4-7, 5.20) Milwaukee - Victor Santos (8-3, 3.91)

(Sports Network) - Two teams that hope to make a charge at the NL Wild Card in the second half of the season take the field today, as the Cincinnati Reds battle the Milwaukee Brewers in the last of a four-game series at Miller Park.

Cincinnati and Milwaukee currently have identical winning percentages (.529), putting them in a virtual tie with San Diego for third place in the Wild Card race. The three squads trail current leader San Francisco by just 1 1/2 games. However, both of these teams are 8 1/2 games behind first place St. Louis in the Central.

The Brewers struck back for a win over Cincinnati on Saturday after losing the first two in the set. Ben Sheets twirled yet another gem in leading the Brew Crew to a 5-0 victory. Sheets, who posted his third straight win and fourth in five starts, hurled eight scoreless frames. He surrendered just five hits while striking out eight and walking just one, and ran his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 16 and lowered his National League-leading ERA to 2.26.

Brady Clark went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI for the Brewers, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Bill Hall, Chad Moeller and Geoff Jenkins added a RBI apiece.

Lyle Overbay, Scott Podsednik, Keith Ginter and Hall each stole a base in the game for Milwaukee. The four stolen bases in a game tied a Brewers NL record, last accomplished Sept. 28, 2001 at Colorado.

The Brewers improved to 45-40, tying the victory total at the All-Star break of the 1992 Milwaukee squad, the franchise's last team with a winning record. The 1979 Brewers posted a franchise-best 54-28 mark at the All-Star break.

Toeing the rubber for Milwaukee will be 27-year-old righthander Victor Santos today. Santos, a native of the Dominican Republic, has won three consecutive starts. Last time on the hill, Santos limited the Chicago Cubs to five hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings. The hurler, who hasn't lost since June 20, struck out four and walked three in the win.

Santos has appeared in three career games against Cincinnati, going 1-0 with an impressive 1.17 ERA. This season, Santos has made a start and a relief appearance against the Reds, giving up just three runs and a hit over 6 2/3 innings of action.

The Reds will pin their hopes on 26-year-old righthander Jose Acevedo this afternoon. Acevedo has dropped four of his last five decisions over his last seven starts. The Dominican hurler pitched well on Tuesday against St. Louis, surrendering four hits and two runs over six innings. Acevedo struck out six and walked three in the contest, while not surrendering a homer for the first time since May 19.

Acevedo didn't pitch well against Milwaukee on May 5, allowing six hits and four runs (three earned) over 4 1/3 innings. For his career, Acevedo is 4-1 with a 3.86 ERA versus the Brewers.

All-Star centerfielder Ken Griffey Jr. left the game Saturday with a hamstring injury for the Reds, who saw a two-game win streak come to an end with their fourth loss in six tries.

Griffey, who was voted by the fans into his 12th All-Star Game, was expected to fly back to Cincinnati for an MRI exam to be conducted by the Reds' team physician. It was not immediately known if the injury will keep Griffey out of Tuesday's All-Star Game in Houston.

Adam Dunn was the lone Red to do much on Saturday, as he finished 2-for-4. Not one Cincinnati player in Saturday's lineup had an average better than .263. D'Angelo Jimenez does have at least one hit in the first three games of the series.

Cincinnati starter Cory Lidle (6-7) took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out five and walked four.

These teams have split eight meetings this season, but Milwaukee has won 11 of the last 16 matchups overall. Milwaukee has won five of the last seven at Miller Park against Cincinnati.

NEW YORK METS (44-42) AT FLORIDA MARLINS (44-43), 3:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: New York - Al Leiter (5-2, 2.05) Florida - Dontrelle Willis (6-5, 4.07)

(Sports Network) - Florida lefthander Dontrelle Willis tries to end a four-start winless streak as he pitches this afternoon for the Marlins in the rubber match of a three-game series versus the New York Mets at Pro Player Stadium.

Willis is 0-2 over his last four outings and hasn't won since June 13 when he threw a complete game at Detroit.

What a difference a year has made for Willis. Called up from Double-A Carolina in May of 2003, he was 9-1 with a 2.08 ERA before the All-Star break, but leveled off later by going 5-5 with 4.60 ERA in the second half of the season. He set Florida's record for wins by a rookie and went on to being named NL Rookie of the Year.

This season he was out of the gate quickly again with a 3-0 mark and a 0.00 ERA in his first three starts. Willis allowed one unearned run on 13 hits in 19 1/3 innings in those outings. He is 3-5 since then with a 5.08 ERA.

On the positive side, Willis has dominated the Mets in his career, winning all four of his starts with a 0.64 ERA, allowing just two earned runs in 28 innings. Willis earned the first shutout of his career on June 16, 2003 versus the Mets, tossing a one-hitter while walking one and striking out eight. Willis has allowed a .175 batting average (17-for-97) against the Mets in his career.

Florida went back over the .500 mark with a 5-2 victory last night. Alex Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI and Mike Lowell added a two-run homer for the Marlins. Gonzalez, who is 6-for-8 with two homers and three doubles in the series, helped the Marlins end a two-game slide. Lowell finished 3-for-3 for Florida.

Lowell has 20 homers this season and 128 in a Marlins uniform, leaving him one short of the club record held by Derrek Lee.

Former Met Armando Benitez worked the final two innings for his 29th save of the season, securing the win for Brad Penny, who ended a personal two-game losing streak. Penny (8-7) allowed two runs on seven hits in six-plus innings. He struck out five and walked two, winning for just the second time in seven starts.

New York's Tom Glavine (7-7) suffered his fourth straight setback, yielding four runs on nine hits in six innings of work. The All-Star struck out three and walked two, suffering his fifth loss in six decisions.

Jose Reyes went 3-for-5 with an RBI for New York, which lost for just the third time in 10 outings.

The Mets are tied with Atlanta for second place in the NL East, two games behind the Philadelphia Phillies. Florida is 2 1/2 games off the pace.

Al Leiter will be on the mound this afternoon for the Mets. The lefthander's last loss came exactly two months ago as he fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks on May 11 at Bank One Ballpark. Since that time, Leiter is 4-0 over his last seven outings and has won three straight starts, most recently tossing seven solid innings in a win at Philadelphia. He has given up just five hits and one run over his last two appearances, covering 14 innings.

Leiter owns a 12-5 mark with a 4.16 ERA in 18 career games against the Marlins.

Richard Hidalgo has a 13-game hitting streak for the Mets.

The Marlins are 6-3 against the Mets this season and that includes a three-game sweep in Miami May 28-30. Florida has won 12 of the last 16 matchups.

COLORADO ROCKIES (36-50) AT SAN DIEGO PADRES (46-41), 4:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Colorado - Denny Stark (0-3, 11.00) San Diego - Ismael Valdez (7-5, 4.98)

(Sports Network) - The Colorado Rockies take aim at their first road sweep in three years today, when they finish up their four-game set with the San Diego Padres at PETCO Park.

Colorado last pulled off a whitewash on the road June 15-17, 2001 in Cincinnati. The Rockies have won the first three of this set to improve to 16-29 in foreign ballparks this season.

On Saturday, the Rockies kept their recent roll going with a 6-2 victory over the Padres. Colorado has won eight of its last nine on the heels of a five- game losing streak.

Jeromy Burnitz and Todd Greene each homered to aid Colorado to Saturday's victory. Todd Helton went 2-for-5 with a run scored for the Rockies in the win, while Aaron Miles and Royce Clayton each finished 2-for-5 in the win.

Starter Aaron Cook and four relievers combined for an impressive outing. Cook (4-3) allowed just one run while scattering eight hits over six innings of work. He struck out three and walked three.

Jeff Fassero, Steve Reed, Javier Lopez and Scott Dohmann combined to toss three innings of one-run ball in relief.

Vinny Castilla's registered his 288th double in the ninth, surpassing Aurelio Rodrigues for most doubles all-time by a Mexican-born player. He also leads his countrymen in Major League home runs, RBIs, extra-base hits and total bases.

Colorado will hand 29-year-old righthander Denny Stark the ball this afternoon. Stark has made only four appearances for the Rockies this season and it hasn't been pretty, as he has been tagged for 38 hits and 32 runs over 18 innings. On Tuesday, Stark allowed nine hits and six runs -- three earned -- over six innings of a no-decision against San Francisco.

Stark has been successful against the Padres in his career, going 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA in five games.

Taking the hill for the Padres this afternoon will be Ismael Valdez. In his last start on Tuesday against Houston, Valdez allowed four hits and three runs (two earned) over five innings in a victory. The veteran walked two and struck out one in the contest. Valdez has split his last four decisions overall.

Valdez struggled against Colorado on May 25, but survived without a decision despite giving up nine hits and six runs over three innings. In his career, Valdez is 6-2 with a 5.00 ERA versus the Rockies.

Brian Giles extended his hitting streak to nine games Saturday with a 2-for-4 night. Giles is hitting .291 this season with 14 homers and 55 RBI. Mark Loretta went 3-for-5 with a run scored and Xavier Nady added two hits in the loss.

Padres starter Brian Lawrence (10-6) surrendered three runs on six hits over four innings in the loss. He walked two and struck out two. Lawrence was unbeaten in his three previous starts. He had yielded two or fewer runs in three of his previous four outings.

San Diego has dropped four in a row at PETCO after winning the previous eight. San Diego is still 12-7 over its last 19 contests.

The Rockies own a 6-3 advantage in this series in 2004, including five wins in the last six meetings. Colorado has won 14 of the last 20 matchups and is 9-3 in the last 12 contests played in San Diego.

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (31-57) AT SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (48-40), 4:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Arizona - Casey Fossum (2-7, 5.75) San Francisco - Jason Schmidt (10-2, 2.53)

(Sports Network) - Just two days before a possible start in the All-Star Game, San Francisco righthander Jason Schmidt will head to the hill against Arizona in the finale of a four-game set at SBC Park.

Schmidt is still trying for his 11th consecutive win on the heels of back-to- back no-decisions. Schmidt hasn't lost since April 21 against San Diego -- a span of 14 starts. The Lewiston, ID native hasn't allowed more than four runs in any of the contests.

His current winning streak is the longest by a Giant since Vida Blue won 10 in a row in 1978. Schmidt is the first Giants pitcher to register 10 wins before the All-Star Break since Russ Ortiz went 11-5 in 1999.

Schmidt owns the longest active victory streak in the majors, and the longest since Roy Halladay had a 15-gamer last season. The last Giants hurler to win at least 11 in a row was Jack Sanford, who set the San Francisco mark with 16 straight in 1962. The club record is 19, shared by Tim Keefe (1888) and Rube Marquard (1912).

The bullpen blew it for Schmidt on Tuesday, as he left with a 6-1 lead over Colorado. In the contest, Schmidt allowed only one hit and one run through seven innings, while fanning 12 and walking five. Schmidt has struck out 17 over his last two starts.

Schmidt won his only other outing against Arizona this season on May 25, as he allowed just four hits and one run over eight innings. In his career, Schmidt is 8-6 with a 3.26 ERA versus the Diamondbacks.

Arizona will look to 26-year-old lefthander Casey Fossum to get the job done on the hill. Fossum has lost three of his last four decisions, including a defeat to Los Angeles on Tuesday. The southpaw allowed nine hits and four runs over 5 2/3 innings, while fanning and walking four.

Fossum lost his first career start against San Francisco on May 25, giving up seven hits and four runs over 5 1/3 innings. In the contest, Fossum struck out three and walked one.

San Francisco has won two straight to grab a 2-1 edge in this four-game set, including Saturday's 3-1 victory. With the win, the Giants were able to remain a half-game behind first place Los Angeles in the NL West.

Brett Tomko hurled 7 2/3 strong innings and collected two hits in the win for the Giants. Tomko (4-5) allowed just five hits and a run. He did not walk a batter and fanned three. Scott Eyre got the final out in the eighth inning, and Matt Herges worked a perfect ninth for his 22nd save.

Barry Bonds was 1-for-1 with three intentional walks. That brings his season total to 71, three better than the previous single-season record, which he tied Friday night. Before Bonds set the record for most intentional walks in 2002, the previous mark was held by Willie McCovey, who had 45 in 1969.

J.T. Snow provided the big blow on offense, as he belted a two-run homer in the contest. Snow finished 2-for-4 in the win.

Brandon Webb (3-9) was the tough-luck loser for the D-Backs. He scattered eight hits and three runs -- two of them earned -- over 6 1/3 innings. He fanned six and walked five.

Shea Hillenbrand, who has a 13-game hitting streak, sat Saturday's game out due to a hamstring injury. As expected, outfielder Danny Bautista missed the contest due to back spasms.

Tim Olson went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the contest.

San Francisco owns a 6-4 advantage in the 2004 set between these clubs. The Giants are 20-9 against Arizona since the start of 2003 season.

HOUSTON ASTROS (44-43) AT LOS ANGELES DODGERS (47-38), 4:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Houston - Peter Munro (1-2, 4.45) Los Angeles - Jose Lima (7-3, 4.42)

(Sports Network) - Los Angeles hurler Jose Lima will face the club he made a name for himself with today, when he anchors the Dodgers against the Houston Astros in the finale of their four-game set at Dodger Stadium.

Lima, an 11-year veteran, pitched four-plus seasons in Houston from 1997-2001. In his Houston career, Lima registered a 46-42 mark, including a career-high 21 wins in 1999. Since leaving Houston, Lima has spent time with Detroit, Kansas City and now Los Angeles.

Surprisingly, Lima has never pitched against the Astros in his career.

Lima has been solid for the Dodgers this season, posting a 7-3 mark with a 4.42 ERA in 22 appearances (10 starts). The veteran has won three of his last four decisions overall, including a victory over Arizona on Tuesday. In that game, Lima limited the Diamondbacks to just seven hits and a run over seven innings of work.

Heading to the mound for Houston this afternoon will be 29-year-old righthander Pete Munro. Munro is winless (0-2) in his last three starts, including a defeat to San Diego on Tuesday. The Flushing, NY native allowed seven hits and four runs over four innings, while fanning one and not walking anyone.

Munro has never faced the Dodgers in his career.

The Dodgers have won two of the first three in this set and seven of their last eight overall. Los Angeles resides atop the NL West -- a half-game ahead of San Francisco and two games in front of San Diego.

On Saturday, Los Angeles recorded a 3-1 victory over the Astros. Paul Lo Duca, who was just added to the All-Star Game as an injury replacement, hit a huge three-run homer to lift the Dodgers to the win.

Los Angeles third baseman Adrian Beltre missed the game with a right quad strain and is not expected back until after the All-Star Game.

Meanwhile, Wilson Alvarez threw six-plus solid innings to help the Dodgers get the victory. Alvarez (3-3), who had lost his previous three decisions, picked up his first victory since May 12. The lefthander was charged with just one run on three hits before leaving the game with two on and no outs in the seventh.

Eric Gagne retired all six hitters he faced after entering the game to start the eighth inning for his second straight save since having his 84-save streak ended. Gagne, who has 23 saves on the season, struck out the side in the ninth.

Astros starter Roger Clemens pitched well, but the righthander walked Dave Roberts leading off the sixth and Cesar Izturis followed with a double. The third batter of the inning, Lo Duca, homered into the seats in left field to give LA a 3-0 lead.

Clemens (10-3) was charged with three runs on the homer by Lo Duca and just four hits in seven innings. He struck out eight and walked just two. The future Hall-of-Famer has surrendered just six earned runs over his last four starts, but has only a 1-1 mark to show for it.

Craig Biggio finished 0-for-4 in the contest, keeping him tied with Jimmy Wynn for second on the Astros all-time homer list with 223.

Mike Lamb drove in the only run of the game for Houston, which has lost five of its last seven games. Lance Berkman posted two hits for the Astros, who reside 10 1/2 games out of first place in the NL Central.

This is the first series between the Astros and Dodgers this year. Houston has won seven of the last 11 meetings dating back to the 2002 season. That includes a 5-3 mark at Dodger Stadium.

CHICAGO CUBS (46-39) AT ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (54-32), 8:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago - Kerry Wood (3-3, 2.82) St. Louis - Chris Carpenter (9-3, 3.50)

(Sports Network) - Just in time for the All-Star break, Kerry Wood is set to be activated from the disabled list tonight to lead the Chicago Cubs against the arch-rival St. Louis Cardinals in the finale of their three-game set at Busch Stadium.

Wood hasn't made a start since May 11 due to a strained right triceps. The fire-throwing righthander dropped three of his last four decisions prior to going on the DL. Wood struggled against Los Angles on May 11, giving up three hits and three runs -- two earned -- over just two innings before leaving due to the injury.

The Irving, TX native made a rehab start for Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, tossing five scoreless frames. Wood then threw on the side late in the week before manager Dusty Baker determined he was ready to return to the hill.

Wood didn't get a decision in his only other 2004 start against the Cardinals on April 30, as he gave up five hits and three runs (two earned) over eight innings while fanning 10. For his career, Wood is 5-5 with a 3.08 ERA versus St. Louis.

St. Louis will have surprising 29-year-old righthander Chris Carpenter on the mound tonight. Carpenter, who is the front-runner for comeback player of the year, has won two of his last three starts. Last time on the hill, Carpenter held Cincinnati to five hits and one run over 7 1/3 innings, while fanning eight and not walking anyone in the win.

Carpenter has dominated the Cubs this season, going 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA in three starts.

St. Louis has walked all over its competition as of late, winning eight straight, 13 of 16 and 19 of its last 24 overall. The Cardinals have opened up a commanding eight-game lead over the second place Cubs in the Central.

The Cardinals continued their excellent play Saturday, picking up a 5-2 victory over the Cubs. Jeff Suppan tossed six solid innings in the winning effort. Suppan (8-5) allowed just two runs on seven hits, walked none and struck out five. He has won his last three decisions. Jason Isringhausen retired all five batters he faced to record his 21st save.

Jim Edmonds belted a two-run homer to pace the Cardinals' offensive attack. Ray Lankford, Hector Luna and So Taguchi also knocked in runs for the Cardinals, while Tony Womack chipped in three hits and a run scored in the win.

Scott Rolen went 1-for-4 in the game, extending his hitting streak to 11 contests.

St. Louis has won its last 10 contests at Busch, the team's longest home streak since an 11-game streak in 1986.

St. Louis has not permitted an unearned run since June 28, and no Cardinal has even committed an error since July 3.

The Cardinals are a season-best 22 games over .500. They have outscored their opponents 45-13 during their current nine-game homestand that wraps up today.

The reeling Cubs have now lost a season-high matching five in a row. Chicago has lost seven consecutive road games overall, falling to 21-24 in foreign ballparks.

Matt Clement (7-8) suffered the loss after surrendering three runs on six hits in six innings. He walked four and fanned five.

Sammy Sosa went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored for the Cubs. Michael Barrett added a pair of hits in the contest.

The Cubs will likely be without two infielders today, as Ramon Martinez (twisted knee) and Aramis Ramirez (groin) are expected to sit out. Martinez suffered his injury running the bases on Saturday.

The Cardinals own a 9-7 advantage in the 2004 set between these clubs. Since the start of last year, the Cardinals own a 18-15 lead in this series.
