LOS ANGELES DODGERS (31-27) AT BOSTON RED SOX (36-24), 3:15 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Los Angeles - Jeff Weaver (3-7, 4.24) Boston - Tim Wakefield (4-4, 3.71)

(Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox will try for their third straight victory this afternoon when they square off against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the middle contest of their three-game set at Fenway Park.

These two storied franchises have played just four regular season games and Los Angeles swept three games in 2002 at Chavez Ravine.

Until Friday night, the Dodgers had never played a game at Fenway Park, which opened in 1912, even though the two teams faced one another in the 1916 World Series. During that series, the Brooklyn Dodgers' first Fall Classic, the Boston home games were played at Braves Field on Commonwealth Avenue, a newer and larger-capacity stadium which was home to the National League's Boston Braves. Boston won that series, four games to one, and the two teams did not face one another again until the 2002 interleague series.

Heading to the hill today for the Red Sox will be knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. The 37-year-old is 0-2 in his last three starts and has not posted a victory since May 23rd. In that contest, Wakefield tossed seven strong innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits in a 7-2 victory over the Blue Jays.

Wakefield is 1-1 with a 3.94 ERA against the Dodgers in his long career. In 19 innings of work, the righthander has allowed seven runs on 19 hits.

The Dodgers will send Jeff Weaver to the mound today. Weaver has struggled of late, going 0-2 in his last three outings. His last victory came on May 22nd against the Atlanta Braves. In that game, Weaver allowed three runs on six hits while striking out nine batters in seven innings of work.

The 27-year-old threw well in his last outing on June 6th against the Diamondbacks. Against Arizona, the righthander allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings, but despite the strong effort he did not figure in the decision.

In 10 career games against the Red Sox, Weaver is just 2-4 with an ERA of 5.85.

Yesterday, David Ortiz bailed out Manny Ramirez by driving in the game-winning run in the ninth, as the Boston Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game interleague series at Fenway Park.

Ortiz, who earlier hit a solo homer, finished 3-for-4 for Boston, which shouldn't have needed its last at-bat to earn its second straight win. However, Ramirez dropped what would have been the final out in the top of the frame, forcing the final heroics.

****** Damon led off the inning with a single off reliever Tom Martin. Mark Bellhorn followed with a double to move Damon to third. Ortiz then fell behind 0-2 before driving the third offering from Tom Martin (0-1) down the right- field line to plate Damon.

Boston starter Derek Lowe pitched seven superb innings and could have earned his second straight victory thanks to Ortiz's solo homer in the seventh.

Lowe allowed only five singles, struck out four and walked four in matching his longest outing of the year. It was also the first start that the righthander did not yield a run.

Reliever Mike Timlin then cruised through the eighth, giving up just one hit, while closer Keith Foulke looked poised for his 13th save of the year in the ninth. He allowed a two-out infield hit to Alex Cora and the next batter, pinch-hitter Olmedo Saenz, lifted a shallow pop to left that should have been the final out of the contest.

However, Ramirez first broke back on the ball and then had to charge in. He appeared to get to the ball in time to make a catch, but he missed it when he attempted a basket catch and Cora scored all the way from first.

It was Ramirez's third error of the season and cost Foulke his second blown save of the year. Although, Foulke (2-0) can thank Ramirez, and Ortiz for that matter, for his second win of the year.

Odalis Perez was also fabulous in his start for the Dodgers. The lefty surrendered just one run on five hits in eight innings of work. He struck out seven and walked one.

Dave Roberts had two hits for the Dodgers, who have lost four of five overall and are making their first trip to Fenway Park in franchise history.

Boston, which has won five of six overall, played without starting shortstop Nomar Garciaparra. He was given the night off and is expected to be in the lineup again on Saturday.

The Red Sox are 59-66 in interleague play, going 33-32 at Fenway Park, while posting a 25-34 on the road.

The Dodgers have an overall interleague record of 61-52.

In the history of the two franchises, 110 players have worn both uniforms, with Don Demeter as the lone player to have worn the jersey of the Boston Red Sox, Brooklyn Dodgers and Los Angeles Dodgers. Three of the 111 players are in the Hall of Fame (Waite Hoyt, Heinie Manush and Juan Marichal) while two others could get the call from Cooperstown once they become eligible (Rickey Henderson and Pedro Martinez). Twenty-eight of the 111 were All-Stars at some point in their career, including Hideo Nomo and Martinez, the only two players involved in this series to have played for both franchises.

NEW YORK METS (28-32) AT KANSAS CITY ROYALS (22-36), 3:15 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: NY Mets - Al Leiter (2-2, 1.98) Kansas City - Chris George (0-0, 3.75)

(Sports Network) - Veteran lefthander Al Leiter will aim to extend his scoreless inning streak today, when he takes the mound for the New York Mets against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

Leiter has tossed 11 consecutive scoreless frames, including five solid innings last Sunday against Florida. The 38-year-old southpaw has allowed just five hits over 10 innings in his last two starts. Leiter has struggled with his control a bit though, walking 10 and fanning just five during the span. The hurler has split his last four decisions overall.

Leiter, a former Yankee and Blue Jay, has registered a 2-1 mark with a 4.32 ERA in six career games versus the Royals.

Kansas City will counter with 24-year-old lefty Chris George on the bump today. George, a June 1 call-up to replace Brian Anderson in the rotation, has made a pair of fruitless starts. The southpaw has given up 10 hits and five runs over 12 innings, while walking 10 and striking out six. In his major league career, George is 13-18 with a 6.17 ERA.

George will take on the Mets for the first time in his career.

The Royals grabbed an early edge in the series Friday, posting a 7-5 victory. Ken Harvey cracked a two-run homer and Benito Santiago drove in a pair of runs, as the Royals mustered the win.

Mike Sweeney added two hits, an RBI and two runs scored for the Royals, who ended a two-game slide despite being outhit 17-9. Matt Stairs posted a double and a triple for Kansas City. Stairs' triple was his first since Sept. 28, 2003 and only his second since 2000.

Jeremy Affeldt recorded his eighth save of the season, securing the win for Darrell May (3-8). May allowed five runs on 11 hits in six innings of work. He struck out five and walked one, ending his personal two-game losing streak.

Jae Seo (3-5) suffered the loss for the Mets, yielding six runs -- five earned -- on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out two and walked one.

Ty Wigginton had two hits and two RBI for New York, which has dropped four straight and six of seven. Gerald Williams and Cliff Floyd added three hits apiece, as the Mets rallied late but are still winless on their current six- game road trip against the American League.

New York registered eight doubles in the loss, tying the record against the Royals, which had been done three times. The Mets had nine doubles May 21 against Colorado.

The Mets, who are 62-60 all-time in interleague play, will be playing the fifth leg of a six-game trip on the road, where they are 13-19 this season. Kansas City, 63-62 all-time against the Senior Circuit, is in the midst of a nine-game homestand and is 15-16 at Kauffman Stadium this season.

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (30-30) AT BALTIMORE ORIOLES (26-29), 3:15 (DH)

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Francisco - Dustin Hermanson (2-2, 3.86) Noah Lowry (0-0, 12.00)

      Baltimore - Rodrigo Lopez (5-2, 2.96) Erik Bedard (1-2, 5.14)

(Sports Network) - A day after rain washed out their series opener, the Baltimore Orioles and San Francisco Giants will look to squeeze in a day-night interleague doubleheader today at Camden Yards.

Barry Bonds is making his first trip to Camden Yards for a regular season game today. Bonds, who played the 1993 All-Star game in Baltimore, is scheduled to return to the lineup for the Giants this after attending a funeral for the mother of a childhood friend Thursday in San Francisco.

The big question again facing Bonds today is if he'll even get a decent pitch to hit. The 39-year-old Bonds, the reigning NL MVP, has been walked a major league-leading 82 times in just 50 games, including 43 times intentionally. He has received at least one free pass in 42 of his 50 contests, including 26 multiple-walk games. Incredibly, Bonds has received more intentional walks by himself than any other major league team.

Bonds is just two homers shy of making the Giants the first franchise in baseball history to have three players club 500 round-trippers with a club. Willie Mays hit 646 homers and Mel Ott belted 511 with the franchise.

Righthander Dustin Hermanson will get the start for San Francisco in the early game. He earned a victory on Sunday at Colorado, allowing six hits and two runs over seven innings in a 16-4 rout at Coors Field. That snapped a six- start winless streak. It was also the first time he worked at least seven innings since September 23, 2001 at Pittsburgh while he was pitching for St. Louis.

Hermanson will make his eighth career appearance and fourth start versus the Orioles. He owns a 2-1 lifetime mark versus the Orioles. He last started against the Orioles July 17, 1999 at Camden Yards. At that time, Hermanson was pitching for Montreal.

Opposing Hermanson will be streaking righthander Rodrigo Lopez. Lopez is 2-1 over four starts since joining the rotation, including back-to- back wins. The Mexican righthander pitched pretty well against Tampa Bay in a victory last Sunday, as he held the Devil Rays to 10 hits and three runs over 6 1/3 innings. Lopez fanned two and walked one in the winning effort.

Lopez will be facing the Giants for the first time in his short career.

The Orioles will send lefthander Erik Bedard to the mound in the nightcap. He is 0-1 in his last three outings and has two straight no-decisions. Bedard allowed five hits and five runs -- four earned -- in only three innings last Friday against Tampa Bay. This will be his first career appearance against the Giants.

Rookie righthander Noah Lowry will make his first-ever major league start in the evening tilt for San Francisco. Lowry struggled in his first relief appearance of the season on April 21 against San Diego, giving up nine hits and four runs over just three innings of a no-decision. The youngster struck out two and walked one in the eventual 11-0 loss.

Lowry has made five major league appearances in his career, allowing 10 hits and four runs over 9 1/3 innings of action.

The Giants dropped the final two contests of a three-game set against the Devil Rays, losing 5-2 Thursday night at Tropicana Field. San Francisco managed just five hits and Michael Tucker scored both runs for the Giants. Starter Kirk Rueter (2-6) was handed the loss after permitting five runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. He walked three and struck out five.

Baltimore has lost six of its last eight games, including last night's 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks at Camden Yards. Daniel Cabrera (3-2), who had a perfect game through six innings in just his sixth major league start, allowed three runs and four hits over seven innings of work.

Cabrera had Cabrera retired the first 18 hitters before walking Scott Hairston to open the seventh. After Steve Finley twice failed to bunt the runner over, the former Oriole took Cabrera's next offering just inside the right field foul pole for a 2-0 Arizona lead.

The Giants are 5-6 on a 14-game road trip, the longest for the team since 1989.

The Orioles are 14-16 at home and have dropped six of their last eight in Baltimore.

This will be the second ever series between the clubs as Baltimore won two of three games in San Francisco in 2002.

      PITTSBURGH PIRATES (24-33) AT OAKLAND ATHLETICS (35-24), 4:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Pittsburgh - Ryan Vogelsong (1-6, 7.53) Oakland - Mark Redman (4-3, 3.91)

(Sports Network) - The red hot Oakland Athletics will look to continue running roughshod over the NL Central today, as they take on the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second of their three-game interleague series at the Coliseum.

Oakland posted a 6-1 win over the Pirates Friday night, improving to 16-0 all- time against the NL Central and an interleague best 79-47 overall. The A's are 4-0 all-time against Pittsburgh during regular season action.

Tim Hudson tossed seven strong innings to pace the A's to their season-high sixth consecutive win. Hudson (7-2) won his fourth decision in the last five, allowing one run on five hits with five strikeouts.

Thanks to their recent success, the Athletics have grabbed sole possession of first place in the AL West. Oakland is a half-game ahead of Anaheim, which beat the Chicago Cubs Friday night.

Damian Miller and Marco Scutaro each drove in a pair of runs for the Athletics in Friday's win. Scutaro and Erubiel Durazo posted two hits apiece in the winning effort.

Rookie shortstop Bobby Crosby is in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak in which he's hitting .480 (12-for-25). Scott Hatteberg has a career-high 12- game hitting streak.

The Athletics are off to their best start since 1992, when the squad also opened the season 35-24.

Oakland will hope for more magic on the hill this afternoon, as veteran Mark Redman takes the ball. Redman has won two of his last three decisions, including a victory over Toronto last Sunday. The 30-year-old limited the Blue Jays to four hits and three runs in the victory.

Redman has faced the Pirates three times in his career, posting a 1-2 mark with a 3.00 ERA.

Toeing the rubber for the Pirates today will be 26-year-old righthander Ryan Vogelsong. The 26-year-old is flirting with being sent to the minor leagues or the bullpen, as he has lost three straight starts and six consecutive decisions over his last 10 starts. Vogelsong hasn't won since defeating Philadelphia on April 8.

Last time on the hill, Vogelsong allowed four hits and two runs over six innings of a tough luck loss to the Chicago Cubs. Vogelsong struck out five and walked one in the contest. It marked his best start since May 14, but still netted nothing more than a defeat.

Vogelsong will be facing the Athletics for the first time in his career.

Rob Mackowiak drove in the Pirates' lone run Friday, as they lost for the 11th time in their last 12.

Pittsburgh starter Kris Benson (4-6) took a no-hitter into the fifth, but was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on just three hits. No Pirates starter has won since Josh Fogg defeated the Chicago Cubs on May 29.

The Bucs have lost their last six games despite scoring first in each one of those contests.

The Pirates have posted an all-time interleague record of 42-59.

These teams haven't met since 2002, when the A's swept a three-game series in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh is 15-15 on the road this season, while the A's are 21-10 at home on the year.

SAN DIEGO PADRES (33-27) AT NEW YORK YANKEES (38-21), 4:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Diego - Dennis Tankersley (0-2, 2.35) New York - Jon Lieber (4-3, 5.01)

(Sports Network) - The San Diego Padres look to make it two in a row when they square off against the New York Yankees in the middle contest of their three- game set at Yankee Stadium.

The Padres will send Dennis Tankersley to the mound today. Tankersley who was called up from Triple-A Portland will be making his third start of the season. Tankersley allowed just two runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings against the Brewers in his June 6th start.

The 25-year-old will be making his first ever appearance against the New York Yankees.

Jon Lieber will head to the rubber for the Yankees this afternoon. After winning three straight starts, Lieber has dropped his last two games, allowing 12 runs on 20 hits in just 11 innings of work in those two contests.

In his last game, the 34-year-old allowed six runs on nine hits in six innings of work against the Texas Rangers on June 5th.

In 16 career games against the Padres, the southpaw has a 7-4 mark with an ERA of 4.64.

Yesterday, Phil Nevin homered and drove in four runs to back seven strong innings from Adam Eaton, as San Diego snapped the New York Yankees' five-game win streak with a 10-2 victory in the opener of a three-game interleague series at Yankee Stadium.

Kerry Robinson went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Padres, who won for the fourth time in six games. Sean Burroughs had two hits and knocked in two runs in the win.

Eaton (3-6) limited New York to just two runs and four hits while striking out four to win his second consecutive start. Akinori Otsuka then retired all six Yankees he faced over the final two innings to record his second career save.

Alex Rodriguez finished 2-for-4 and hit his 14th home run for New York, which was dealt just its second loss its last 10 contests.

New York starter Mike Mussina yielded only an infield single through the first three innings, but was removed from the game with tightness in his right groin after finishing the frame. He fanned four and gave up one unearned run.

Felix Heredia (0-1), who relieved Mussina in the fourth, took the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits over three innings.

Alex Rodriguez finished 2-for-4 in the loss and has now reached base safely in 48 consecutive games, extending the longest such streak of his career and the longest streak in the majors this season. The run is also longest by a Yankee since Jeter reached base safely in 57 straight games from September 24, 1998, through June 5, 1999.

During the streak, Rodriguez is 63-for-185 with 13 homers, 32 RBI and 27 walks. He is hitting .307 for the year.

The Yankees, who are in the midst of a 12-game home-stretch, are 21-9 in New York this season.

San Diego, which will be playing the fourth leg of a six-game road trip tonight, is 17-15 away from home this season, and has posted a 54-60 record in interleague play.

New York has prospered in interleague play, going 75-49 against National League opponents -- the second-best record in the majors. Only the Oakland A's (79-47) have a better record than New York.

The Yankees took two of three from the Padres in the only other regular season series in June of the 2002 campaign at Qualcomm Stadium. New York also swept the 1998 World Series from San Diego.

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (25-36) AT TORONTO BLUE JAYS (27-34), 4:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Arizona - Andrew Good (0-0, 3.47) Toronto - Roy Halladay (5-4, 3.58)

(Sports Network) - The Arizona Diamondbacks try for their third straight victory this afternoon when they square off against the Toronto Blue Jays in the middle contest of their three-game set at the SkyDome.

The Blue Jays will send ace pitcher Roy Halladay to the mound this afternoon. Halladay will be making his first start since being placed on the disabled list two weeks ago with shoulder soreness.

After claiming the AL Cy Young award in the 2003 season, Halladay has struggled thus far this season, especially early in the year, going 0-2 with an ERA of 5.93. Despite the slow start, Halladay produced his best start to a season before be placed on the DL. In that contest of May 27th, the 27-year- old allowed just two unearned runs on four hits while striking out seven batters in 8 2/3 innings of work.

The 6-foot-6 righthander won his lone start against the Diamondbacks.

The Diamondbacks will hand the ball to Andrew Good today. Good will be making his first start since July of last year. As for the 2004 season, Good has made 12 appearances out of the bullpen, posting a 3.47 ERA in 23 1/3 innings of work.

The 24-year-old will be making his first appearance against the Blue Jay in his young career.

Last night, Tim Olson tied the game with his first major league hit, an RBI single, and scored the winning run on Danny Bautista's base hit, as Arizona rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to beat Toronto, 3-2, in the opener of the series.

The Diamondbacks' rally erased a strong outing for Toronto's Pat Hentgen, who left with a 2-0 lead after seven shutout innings. Hentgen yielded just five hits and two walks, retiring 14 of the final 16 batters he faced.

Justin Speier struck out two in a scoreless eighth inning for the Blue Jays, but Jason Frasor (2-2) ran into trouble right away in the top of the ninth.

Chad Tracy and Alex Cintron led off with consecutive doubles down the left field line for the first run. Frasor then struck out Doug Devore, but Olson, a rookie, followed with his first hit in 16 at bats -- a pinch-hit single to centerfield that scored Cintron to tie the game at 2-2.

Terry Adams came on to relieve Frasor with two outs, and after surrendering a walk to Steve Finley, Bautista singled up the middle to score Olson for the go-ahead run.

Jose Valverde got the final two outs in the ninth for Arizona to pick up his seventh save. Randy Choate (1-0) retired two batters in the eighth inning for the win.

The Diamondbacks won for the fourth time in five games, and got their first victory of the season when trailing after eight innings (1-30). They improved to 50-45 in interleague play.

Frasor blew a save for the first time in five opportunities this season and had a 20-inning scoreless streak snapped. It was Toronto's sixth blown save in 17 chances this season.

The Blue Jays have lost four of their last six games, and fell to 19-5 when leading after eight innings. They are 60-65 all-time in interleague games.

COLORADO ROCKIES (21-39) AT TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS (24-34), 6:15 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Colorado - Shawn Estes (6-3, 5.59) Tampa Bay - Rob Bell (1-3, 6.00)

(Sports Network) - Interleague play continues tonight at Tropicana Field as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays play host to the Colorado Rockies.

Shawn Estes will get the nod for the Rockies tonight, and although he does possess a solid 6-3 overall record, his 5.59 ERA could certainly stand some improvement. He has posted a much more impressive 3.18 ERA in his last three starts, and is coming off a no-decision against the Giants on June 7th in which he allowed five runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Estes was defeated in his only career start against Tampa, as he gave up five runs, four of which were earned, on eight hits in seven innings last season while pitching for the Cubs.

Slated to take the hill for the Devil Rays in this matchup is righty Rob Bell, who is certainly hoping to improve on his 1-3 record and 6.00 ERA. Bell has not shown great control to this point, as he has posted a rather high total of nine walks in 21 innings while striking out just eight batters. In his last start on June 6th, Bell was touched for five runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings of work against Baltimore.

This game marks the first time that Bell will have faced Colorado in his career.

In the series opener last night, Rey Sanchez smacked an inside the park home run in the 10th inning to lift the Devil Rays to a dramatic 8-7 win over the Rockies.

Sanchez finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored for Tampa, while Robert Fick and Jose Cruz Jr. also homered in the winning effort.

Closer Danys Baez (3-1) earned the win despite allowing two runs on three hits in two innings of work. Devil Rays' starter Chad Gaudin did not factor in the decision after going 4 2/3 innings and yielding three runs on seven hits.

Todd Helton had four hits, including a homer, and drove in five runs for the Rockies, who have dropped six straight. Aaron Miles added four hits in defeat.

Colorado reliever Shawn Chacon (0-3) was saddled with the loss after going 1 1/3 innings and allowing two runs on two hits. Aaron Cook started for the Rockies, but did receive a decision after working six innings and giving up five runs on seven hits.

Colorado is just 41-60 all-time against the American League and has lost 38 of 51 on the road in interleague action. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, hasn't been impressive in interleague action either, as it went 3-15 last season and is just 41-69 all-time against the Senior Circuit.

After dropping 28 of their first 38 games, the Devil Rays have now won 14 of 20 and three in a row.

The Rockies will be playing the fifth leg of a six-game road trip tonight and are 8-23 away from home this season, while Tampa is 17-15 at home.

Colorado swept a three-game set from the Devil Rays in the 2002 campaign in the only-other series between the two teams.

ATLANTA BRAVES (30-30) AT CHICAGO WHITE SOX (31-26), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Atlanta - John Thomson (5-3, 3.86) Chicago - Esteban Loaiza (6-3, 3.71)

(Sports Network) - The Atlanta Braves will try for their fourth win in six games tonight, when they continue their three-game interleague set against the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

Atlanta snapped a two-game skid Friday night with a 6-4 victory over the White Sox. Jaret Wright allowed just two hits in seven shutout innings and Atlanta survived a ninth-inning rally to record the win. Wright (5-5) also recorded a season-high eight strikeouts while issuing a pair of walks. The righthander, who won for the third time in four starts, did not yield a hit after Sandy Alomar's single in the bottom of the third.

Eli Marrero had two hits along with three runs batted in and Julio Franco went 3-for-4 with a RBI in the win. Andruw Jones and Mark DeRosa added a RBI each in the contest.

Chipper Jones, who is still struggling with a hamstring injury, was utilized as the designated hitter. Chipper finished 0-for-4 with a walk in the contest.

With the victory, the Braves climbed back to .500. Atlanta had been under .500 after 60 games for the first time since 1990.

Instead of Travis Smith, Atlanta will send 30-year-old righthander John Thomson to the mound this evening. Thomson saw a three-start win streak come to an end Wednesday, as he was touched for four hits and a run through just an inning. The veteran's effort was cut short due to a two-hour and 24-minute rain delay, leaving him available to pitch today on two days rest.

Thomson has started only one other career game against the White Sox, tossing a complete game shutout. The hurler allowed only four hits, while fanning six and walking one.

Taking the ball for the White Sox tonight will be ace righthander Esteban Loaiza. The Mexican hurler is 2-0 over his last four starts, including consecutive no-decisions over his past two outings. In his last outing, Loaiza gave up eight hits and two runs over 6 1/3 innings of action versus Seattle on Sunday.

Loaiza has faced the Braves six other times in his career, posting a 2-2 mark with a 3.79 ERA. The hurler has surrendered 33 hits and 16 runs through 38 innings of action.

Chicago starter Scott Schoeneweis (5-4) took the loss Friday after yielding five runs over six innings. The southpaw yielded eight hits and struck out six.

Some good news did come out of the game for Chicago, as Carlos Lee went 1- for-4 with a run scored and a RBI to extend his major league-high hitting streak to 25 games. Lee is now just two contests short of the club record set by Luke Appling in 1936 and matched by Albert Belle in 1997. The outfielder is hitting .365 (38-for-104) with nine doubles, one home run and 21 RBI during the streak.

There are a couple of other impressive personal offensive runs for the White Sox. Willie Harris owns a career-high 13-game hitting streak, while Frank Thomas has reached base safely in 20 straight games.

Jose Valentin actually led the offensive charge for the White Sox Friday, belting a three-run homer in their four-run ninth frame.

Chicago has dropped six of eight, but remains only a half-game behind Minnesota for first place in the AL Central. The Twins fell to Philadelphia at the Metrodome on Friday night.

These teams met once before in a series, in 2002 with Atlanta sweeping a three-game set at home, outscoring the White Sox 27-5.

      CINCINNATI REDS (34-26) AT CLEVELAND INDIANS (27-31), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Cincinnati - Todd Van Poppel (2-2, 4.43) Cleveland - Scott Elarton (0-0, 0.00)

(Sports Network) - The struggling Cincinnati Reds will attempt to get back on track tonight against the Cleveland Indians in the second of a three-game interleague set.

Todd Van Poppel figures to get the start for Cincinnati in this tilt, and he currently owns a 2-2 record with a 4.43 ERA. Van Poppel is coming off a no- decision against the Expos on Sunday in which he surrendered three runs over five innings. Although his last victory came way back on May 15th, the righty has pitched fairly well overall lately

In four career games against Cleveland, Van Poppel is 0-1 with a 2.87 ERA. In 31.1 innings, the righty surrendered 22 hits.

Set to oppose Cincinnati tonight is Cleveland hurler Scott Elarton, and it is certainly safe to say that he is desperate for a solid outing. Elarton, who was recently waived by Colorado and signed by the Indians, went 0-6 with a staggering 9.80 ERA with the Rockies. Elarton has been touched for 57 hits in 41 1/3 innings. The righty hasn't started a game since May 15th, and he surrendered seven runs on nine hits in only four innings in that tilt against the Phillies.

Tonight's contest marks the first time that Elarton will have faced the Reds in his career.

In the first game of this series last night, Lou Merloni drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the 11th to force in the game-winning run and lift Cleveland to a 6-5 win.

Ronnie Belliard stroked three hits and drove in two runs for the Indians, who have won four of their last six games. Coco Crisp went 4-for-4 with an RBI in the winning effort.

Cleveland reliever David Riske (3-2) got the win after pitching two scoreless innings and striking out five. C.C. Sabathia started for the Indians, going five innings and yielding five runs -- three earned -- on seven hits.

Felipe Lopez drove in two runs for the Reds, who dropped their fourth straight. Ken Griffey Jr. had three hits and scored a run in defeat, and he is still stuck on 498 homers for his career.

Cincinnati reliever Phil Norton (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season by allowing the winning run in the 11th.

Veteran shortstop Barry Larkin (abdominal strain) missed the first game of the series and may not play again tonight. Felipe Lopez went 2-for-5 with two RBI in Larkin's spot.

The Indians are 18-15 at home this season, while the Reds are 16-16 in foreign ballparks.

Cleveland took two of three meetings between these teams last season at Jacobs Field. Since the 2001 campaign, the Indians own a slight 6-4 advantage over the Reds in this series.

The Indians are 62-63 all-time in interleague action, while Cincinnati is 43-58 against the AL during the regular season.

The Reds have lost four straight games to fall out of first place in the NL Central, as they are now a half game back of St. Louis. As for Cleveland, it is five games out of first in the AL Central.

      FLORIDA MARLINS (34-27) AT DETROIT TIGERS (28-32), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Florida - Brad Penny (6-3, 2.62) Detroit - Nate Robertson (4-3, 4.37)

(Sports Network) - The Detroit Tigers and the Florida Marlins continue their three-game interleague series tonight from Comerica Park.

Hoping to silence the Detroit crowd in this contest will be Florida righty Brad Penny, as he carries an impressive 6-3 record and 2.62 ERA into the tilt. Penny was handed a loss in his last outing on June 6th, as he surrendered three earned runs on eight hits in five innings. On the road this season, he is 3-2 with a 2.53 ERA.

Tonight's game marks a first for Penny, as he has never faced the Tigers in his career.

Expect Nate Robertson to get the start tonight for the Tigers in front of the home crowd. Robertson is 4-3 this season with a 4.37 ERA, but he is only 1-2 at home with a 5.86 ERA. In his last start against Minnesota earlier this week, Robertson did not figure in the decision after giving up three runs on seven hits in seven innings.

In his career, Robertson has never faced the Marlins, but the same can be said for many pitchers who are participating in interleague play.

In the first game of the series yesterday, Dmitri Young hit a three-run homer to lead Detroit to an 8-4 win over Florida.

Carlos Guillen added a two-run shot and Omar Infante also drove in a pair of runs for the Tigers, who have won three straight games. Guillen now has a career-high 10 homers this year.

Ivan Rodriguez, who played on the Marlins' world championship team last season, went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in his first game against his former club. Rodriguez, a 10-time Gold Glove winner, signed a four year, $40 million deal with Detroit in the offseason after not coming to terms with Florida.

Gary Knotts (4-1) picked up the win after allowing four runs and five hits over 6 1/3 innings. Knotts, who has won three straight starts, walked three and struck out two.

Rodriguez has now hit safely in 10 straight contest, while Florida second baseman Luis Castillo went 0-for-4 and had his 11-game hitting streak snapped.

Lenny Harris drove in two runs and Miguel Cabrera had a solo homer for the Marlins, who lost for the third time in their last seven contests.

Tommy Phelps (1-1) suffered the loss after being touched for six runs and six hits over just three-plus innings

Currently, Florida is 1 1/2 game up on Philadelphia for first place in the NL East. Meanwhile, Detroit is five games back of Minnesota in the AL Central.

These teams had met twice before the start of this series, in 1997 and 2002 when Florida won two of three games both times.

      PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (31-27) AT MINNESOTA TWINS (33-27), 7:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Philadelphia - Kevin Millwood (4-4, 4.85) Minnesota - Carlos Silva (6-3, 4.26)

(Sports Network) - Minnesota righthander Carlos Silva will face his former team for the first time tonight, when he heads to the mound against the Philadelphia Phillies in the middle test of a three-game interleague set at the Metrodome.

Silva, who was dealt from Philadelphia to Minnesota as part of the Eric Milton deal during the offseason, made just one start in 130 appearances over two seasons with the Phillies. The Venezuelan hurler posted an 8-1 record with 12 holds and two saves as a long reliever in Philadelphia.

The Twins have given Silva a chance to start and he has been solid, posting a 6-3 record with a 4.26 ERA in 12 outings. Silva is 1-0 over his last two starts, including a no-decision against Detroit last Sunday. The hard thrower held the Tigers to just nine hits and three runs over 7 2/3 innings, while fanning two and walking one.

The Phillies will send 29-year-old righthander Kevin Millwood to the hill this evening. Millwood is winless (0-2) over his last five starts, including an ugly loss to Atlanta last Sunday. The disappointing righthander was hammered for eight hits and six runs over just 4 2/3 innings, while fanning and walking three in the defeat. Millwood dropped to 0-6 with a 9.10 ERA in six starts against Atlanta.

Millwood will be facing the Twins for the first time in his career.

Philadelphia picked up an 11-6 win over the Twins Friday night, as they posted a five-spot in the top of the ninth. Jim Thome's two-run double scored the go- ahead runs in the game-deciding inning. Thome remains two homers short of 400 for his career.

Thome has been terrific in interleague play over his career. He is tied with Toronto's Carlos Delgado for the most interleague home runs (37) and ranks second in runs batted in (98).

Ricky Ledee added a tape-measure three-run homer to cap the scoring in the ninth, one of his two homers in the game. He finished with three hits and five RBI.

Placido Polanco also homered and knocked in three runs with three hits for Philadelphia, which blew a 6-3 advantage when the Twins scored three in the seventh inning.

Tim Worrell (2-2) picked up the win with a scoreless eighth inning, and Billy Wagner struck out two in a perfect ninth to end the game.

Philadelphia starter Brett Myers yielded nine hits and a walk, while fanning seven in 6 2/3 innings of action. Myers was forced from the game after surrendering a game-tying two-run homer in the seventh.

With the victory and Florida's loss to Detroit Friday, the Phillies pulled within 1 1/2 games of first place in the NL East.

Joe Mauer and Lew Ford both homered and drove in three runs for the Twins, who had a four-game win streak snapped. Mauer and Jacque Jones registered three hits in the contest, while Ford and Torii Hunter chipped in two hits apiece.

Lefthanded reliever Terry Mulholland (0-2) took the loss after surrendering three hits and two runs over 2 2/3 innings. Mulholland struck out two and didn't permit a walk in the loss.

Minnesota starter Seth Greisinger went 5 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits and six runs. Greisinger struck out three and walked one in the contest.

This is the second meeting between these teams and the first since the 2002 season. The Twins took two out of three in Philadelphia in that set.

Minnesota is 63-61 all-time in interleague play, while the Phillies are 59-62 against the American League.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (35-26) AT TEXAS RANGERS (33-25), 8:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: St. Louis - Chris Carpenter (7-1, 3.42) Texas - Ryan Drese (2-3, 3.97)

(Sports Network) - Red hot St. Louis righthander Chris Carpenter takes aim at his seventh consecutive victory tonight, when he anchors the Cardinals against the Texas Rangers in the second of a three-game interleague set at Ameriquest Field.

Carpenter is unbeaten (6-0) over his last nine starts, including a victory over Chicago on Monday. The former Toronto Blue Jay hasn't lost since April 14 against Houston. Carpenter limited the Cubs to only nine hits and three runs over 8 1/3 innings, while fanning six and not walking anyone.

Carpenter has not been his best against the Rangers in his career, posting just a 2-5 record with a 6.87 ERA in 10 games.

Texas will counter with 28-year-old righthander Ryan Drese on the hill this evening. Drese is 0-3 over his last six starts, including a tough luck loss to the New York Yankees last Sunday. In that loss, Drese surrendered seven hits and two runs over eight innings, while striking out five and walking one.

Drese has never faced the Cardinals in his career.

The Cardinals placed a 12-7 beating on the Rangers Friday night. John Mabry went 3-for-4 with a homer and five RBI to pace the Cardinals, while Reggie Sanders added a homer, three hits and scored three times.

Albert Pujols, who is struggling with a strained left hamstring, returned to the lineup as the designated hitter. Pujols, who had missed the previous four games, went 1-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored. Mabry once again started at first base for Pujols.

Cody McKay and Tony Womack each stroked two hits as well for St. Louis, which won its second game in its last three outings. The Cardinals moved past Cincinnati for first place in the NL Central with the victory. Cincy lost to Cleveland Friday night.

St. Louis starter Jeff Suppan (6-5) earned the win by going six innings and allowing two earned runs on seven hits and striking out three.

St. Louis outfielder Roger Cedeno was suspended four games Friday for a confrontation Wednesday night with umpire Rick Reed. Reed said Cedeno spit on him.

Rangers starter Juan Dominguez (1-2) was saddled with the loss after yielding four earned runs on eight hits in just 3 1/3 innings of work.

Brad Fullmer, Laynce Nix and Alfonso Soriano each homered for the Rangers, who had a three-game winning streak snapped. Michael Young had two hits for his 28th multihit game of the season. Soriano and Fullmer added two hits each in the contest.

The Cardinals are 53-51 all-time in interleague play, while Texas has a 59-67 record against the National League. The Rangers have 677 runs in interleague action, the most of any Major League team.

      CHICAGO CUBS (31-29) AT ANAHEIM ANGELS (35-25), 10:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago Cubs - Glendon Rusch (2-1, 3.99) Anaheim - Bartolo Colon (4-4, 6.00)

(Sports Network) - Anaheim ace Bartolo Colon will take aim at his first win in over a month tonight, as he heads to the mound for the Angels against the Chicago Cubs in the middle contest of their three-game interleague series at Angel Stadium.

Colon is winless (0-2) since May 8 against Tampa Bay -- a span of five starts. The veteran's woes continued last Sunday against Cleveland, as he was tagged for nine hits and seven runs over 4 1/3 innings of a loss. Colon walked three and struck out only one in the defeat. The fireballer posted more walks than strikeouts in a game for the first time this season. Colon is 0-1 with an 11.88 ERA in pair of June outings.

Colon has never recorded a decision in three career starts against Chicago, while amassing a 4.19 ERA.

Chicago will counter with lefthander Glendon Rusch on the mound tonight. Rusch suffered his first loss of the season on Monday to St. Louis, giving up six hits and four runs over seven innings of work. The lefthander struck out two and walked two in the losing effort.

Rusch has not been good against the Angels in his career, posting a 0-3 record with a sizeable 10.13 ERA.

Anaheim grabbed the edge in the set Friday night with a narrow 3-2 victory. Casey Kotchman stroked an RBI single in the fourth inning for what turned out to be the winning run, as the Angels held on for the win.

Vladimir Guerrero and Jose Guillen also drove in a run for the Angels, who have won two straight contests following a five-game skid. Anaheim remained just a half-game behind streaking first place Oakland in the AL West.

John Lackey was solid to earn his first win in his last five starts (1-3). Lackey (4-7) permitted just two runs on seven hits while striking out six over seven innings.

Francisco Rodriguez set the Cubs down in order in the ninth to pick up his fourth save of the year.

Earlier in the day, Anaheim placed pitcher Aaron Sele on the 15-day disabled list due to right shoulder fatigue.

Todd Hollandsworth and Jose Macias each had an RBI for the Cubs, who have lost three of their last five games. Hollandsworth finished with a pair of hits in the contest.

Greg Maddux (5-5) was the loser after allowing three runs and seven hits over seven innings. Maddux, who had won his last two starts, struck out six batters.

Chicago is beginning its interleague slate, as it owns a 52-52 all-time mark in interleague play. The Angels are 66-60 in interleague action.

The Cubs are 13-14 on the road this season, while the Angels own a 19-12 home mark.

These teams are meeting for the first time in the regular season. The squads have met 170 times in Cactus League play in spring training since 1961.

      MONTREAL EXPOS (20-39) AT SEATTLE MARINERS (23-36), 10:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Montreal - Claudio Vargas (4-3, 5.31) Seattle - Jamie Moyer (4-2, 4.14)

(Sports Network) - Veteran lefthander Jamie Moyer will try to win his fourth consecutive decision tonight, as he toes the rubber for the Seattle Mariners against the Montreal Expos in the second of their three-game interleague set at Safeco Field.

Moyer is 3-0 over his last four starts and hasn't lost since April 22 -- a span of eight outings. Last time on the hill, Moyer went without a decision after giving up seven hits and three runs through five innings against the Chicago White Sox. Moyer, who is eighth in the AL in WHIP (1.24), struck out six and walked three in the contest.

Moyer has appeared in 10 career games against the Expos, posting a 3-4 mark with a 3.78 ERA.

Montreal will hand the ball to 25-year-old righthander Claudio Vargas this evening. Vargas is making his first start since June 2, as he was momentarily moved to the bullpen. The Dominican hurler came out of the 'pen Tuesday, tossing one inning against Kansas City, giving up a hit and a run. Vargas has been quite effective on the road this season, going 3-0 with a 3.10 ERA.

Vargas lost his only other career start against Seattle despite surrendering just four hits and a run over six innings.

Seattle got the upper hand in the series Friday, registering a narrow 1-0 victory. Pat Borders stroked a bases-loaded single through the left side of the infield with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Mariners to the win. Borders' effort snapped Seattle's 29-inning scoreless drought.

Hiram Bocachica scored the winning run after coming in as a pinch-runner for John Olerud, who led off the inning with his third hit. Bocachica stole second base with two outs, forcing the Expos to intentionally walk Rich Aurilia.

The Mariners, who were shutout by the Astros on Tuesday and Wednesday, have won three of their last five. Seattle remains in the cellar of the AL West, 12 games off the pace.

Seattle reliever Eddie Guardado (2-0) picked up the win with a hitless ninth. Starter Ryan Franklin tossed eight shutout innings before that, yielding just five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Livan Hernandez (3-6) suffered the loss in his third complete game of the season. He struck out five and walked five, giving up 10 hits along the way.

Terrmel Sledge had two of Montreal's five hits. The Expos had a two-game winning streak snapped and lost for the fourth time in six games. Sledge is now hitting .271 with four home runs and 15 RBI. Montreal has been blanked nine times this season.

The Mariners are in the midst of a 12-game homestand and are 14-18 in Seattle this season. Montreal, meanwhile, is on a 12-game road trip and is 11-22 away from home on the year.

In their only other meeting last year, the Expos took two of three from the Mariners in the Emerald City.

Seattle has posted a 66-60 mark in interleague play, while the Expos are 64-61 against the AL.

        HOUSTON ASTROS (32-27) AT MILWAUKEE BREWERS (30-28), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Houston - Roy Oswalt (4-4, 3.42) Milwaukee - Chris Capuano (1-2, 3.18)

(Sports Network) - The Milwaukee Brewers will look to make it two in row tonight when they square off against the Houston Astros in the middle contest of their three-game set at Miller Park.

Chris Capuano will head to the hill for the Brewers tonight. Capuano, who is on the disabled list with tightness in his back, will likely be activated to be on the mound for the first time since April 18th. In that game, Capuano allowed one run on two hits in two innings in a 6-1 loss to the Astros.

The loss to the Astros is the only career outing for Capuano against Houston.

The Astros will send Roy Oswalt to the mound this evening. Oswalt was victorious in his last outing, allowing two runs on six hits in six strong innings against the Cardinals on June 6th.

Oswalt has performed much better at home this year, going 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA. However, away from the confines of Minute Maid Park, the 26-year-old is just 2-3 with a 4.23 ERA.

The righthander has defeated the Brewers twice this season, allowing just two runs, while striking out 16 batters in 15 innings. In his career against Milwaukee, Oswalt is 7-3 with a 3.25 ERA.

Last night, Scott Podsednik hit a three-run homer and had a career-tying four RBI to lead Milwaukee to a 9-3 win over Houston in the opener of a three-game set at Miller Park.

Junior Spivey and Geoff Jenkins each added solo homers for the Brewers, who have won three of their last four games.

Doug Davis (5-5) earned the win after allowing three runs and seven hits over six innings. Davis walked five and struck out three.

Lance Berkman hit a solo homer for the Astros, who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Jeff Kent went 1-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to a career-high 25 games. The streak is tied with White Sox slugger Carlos Lee for the longest this year, as Lee has also hit safely in 25 straight games.

Tim Redding (3-5) took the loss after being touched for four runs -- three earned -- and seven hits over 5 1/3 innings while walking three and fanning two.

The Brewers, who are in the midst of a 14-day, 12-game homestand, have posted a 15-12 home mark this season. Houston is 17-14 on the road.

Houston has won five of eight meetings between these teams in 2004, including two of four at Miller Park. The Astros most recently took three of four from the Brewers at Minute Maid Park from April 15-18.
