Probable Starting Pitchers: Arizona - Steve Sparks (2-4, 6.39) Toronto - Pat Hentgen (2-5, 5.64)

(Sports Network) - The Arizona Diamondbacks try for the fourth win in five games when they battle the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game interleague series at SkyDome.

Arizona grabbed two of three games in Baltimore this week and completed the series with a 3-0 win in Thursday's finale. Steve Finley snapped a scoreless contest as well as a no-hitter by Daniel Cabrera with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning as Arizona defeated the Orioles at Camden Yards.

Casey Fossum (1-4) earned his first win as a Diamondback with six scoreless innings. The lefthander, one of the big players in the offseason deal that sent Curt Schilling to the Boston Red Sox, scattered five hits and two walks while striking out five. Fossum's last victory came on August 21, 2003 against Oakland while a member of the Red Sox.

Mike Koplove preserved the shutout over the next two frames, while Jose Valverde tossed a scoreless ninth to notch his sixth save as Arizona recorded its third win in the last four contests.

The Blue Jays were handed a loss by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, denying Toronto a three-game sweep. Kazuhisa Ishii allowed just one run in eight strong innings to lead the Dodgers to a 6-1 victory.

Josh Towers (1-2) took the loss in just 2 2/3 innings of work. He surrendered all six Toronto runs on eight hits and a walk, with two strikeouts.

Vernon Wells knocked in the only Toronto run with a solo homer in the fourth inning. The Blue Jays have lost three of their last five.

Steve Sparks will try to pick up his first victory in over a month, as he takes the ball for the Diamondbacks this evening. Sparks has posted three straight no decisions and his last victory came on May 4 against the Cubs. Sparks' last outing came Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He surrendered four runs -- two earned -- in 4 2/3 innings.

The 38-year-old knuckleballer is 3-2 with a 3.99 earned run average in nine career games (six starts) against the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays hand the reins to veteran Pat Hentgen, who will try to avoid losing his fourth straight decision. Hentgen, the 1996 AL Cy Young Award winner, is 0-3 with a 5.72 ERA in his last four outings. The righthander's latest setback came Saturday in Oakland after he allowed four runs and four hits in seven frames. The 35-year-old has one career start against the Diamondbacks and was handed a loss in that outing.

This will be the first meetings between these teams since the 2002 season, when Toronto took two of three games from the Diamondbacks. Arizona is 49-45 in overall interleague play, while Toronto has a 60-64 mark against the National League.

LOS ANGELES DODGERS (31-26) AT BOSTON RED SOX (35-24), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Los Angeles - Odalis Perez (3-3, 3.20) Boston - Derek Lowe (5-5, 6.55)

(Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Dodgers make their first-ever trip to Fenway Park this evening when they begin a three-game interleague set against the Boston Red Sox.

These two storied franchises have played just three regular season games and Los Angeles swept those three games in 2002 at Chavez Ravine.

The Dodgers, though, have never played a game at Fenway Park, which opened in 1912, even though the two teams faced one another in the 1916 World Series. During that series, the Brooklyn Dodgers' first Fall Classic, the Boston home games were played at Braves Field on Commonwealth Avenue, a newer and larger-capacity stadium which was home to the National League's Boston Braves. Boston won that series, four games to one, and the two teams did not face one another again until the 2002 interleague series.

Heading to the hill tonight for the Red Sox will be righthander Derek Lowe, who is 5-5 on the year with a 6.55 earned run average. The 30-year-old Michigan native picked up the win in his last start, as he allowed three runs - two earned - on three hits in five innings.

Lowe lost his only other start against the Dodgers.

The Dodgers will counter with lefthander Odalis Perez, who picked up his first win in seven starts in his last outing on Saturday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. In that outing the 26-year-old Dominican allowed three runs and eight hits over five innings to improve to 3-3 on the year.

Perez, who has pitched to a 3.20 ERA this season, lost his only other start against the Red Sox and allowed four runs and six hits in that effort.

Boston won its fourth game in five chances on Thursday as it topped San Diego 9-3 in the rubber match of their three-game interleague set.

Curt Schilling (8-3) picked up his fourth straight victory after tossing seven strong innings. He yielded two runs on six hits and a pair of walks while striking out eight batters.

Boston, in the midst of a six-game homestand, is 19-10 at home.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, dropped two of three to the Toronto Blue Jays, but salvaged Thursday's finale with a 6-1 victory. Kazuhisa Ishii (8-3) yielded one run on six hits and a walk for the Dodgers, who moved percentage points ahead of the San Diego Padres for the lead in the AL West.

Los Angeles, which is 3-3 so far on its nine-game road trip, owns a 16-14 record in foreign ballparks this season.

The Red Sox are 58-66 all-time in interleague play with LA posting a 61-52 all-time mark against the AL.

In the history of the two franchises, 110 players have worn both uniforms, with Don Demeter as the lone player to have worn the jersey of the Boston Red Sox, Brooklyn Dodgers and Los Angeles Dodgers. Three of the 111 players are in the Hall of Fame (Waite Hoyt, Heinie Manush and Juan Marichal) while two others could get the call from Cooperstown once they become eligible (Rickey Henderson and Pedro Martinez). Twenty-eight of the 111 were All-Stars at some point in their career, including Hideo Nomo and Martinez, the only two players involved in this series to have played for both franchises.

SAN DIEGO PADRES (32-27) AT NEW YORK YANKEES (38-20), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Diego - Adam Eaton (2-6, 5.56) New York - Mike Mussina (7-4, 4.59)

(Sports Network) - Mike Mussina tries to win his seventh consecutive decision this evening when the New York Yankees start a three-game interleague set with the San Diego Padres at Yankee Stadium

After a 1-4 start, Mussina has won his last six decisions and has won his last two starts after a brilliant effort against the Texas Rangers on Sunday. In that outing the 35-year-old righthander allowed a run and four hits over eight-plus innings to improve to 7-4 on the season. He also struck out a season-high 10 without walking a batter, while lowering his earned run average to 4.59.

Mussina started one game against the Padres in his career and did not earn a decision in that effort.

San Diego will counter with righthander Adam Eaton, who picked up his first win in 10 starts in his last trip to the hill on Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers. In that contest, the 26-year-old hurler yielded two runs on three hits over six innings to improve to 2-6 on the season and lowered his ERA to 5.65.

Eaton has never faced the Yankees.

New York has been on fire of late and has won nine of eight, 14 of its last 16 and 30 of its last 39, and has moved 3 1/2 games in front of the Boston Red Sox in the American League East.

The Yanks' latest win came on Thursday, as Bernie Williams went 3-for-3 and became the seventh player in team history to reach 2,000 hits, as New York completed a three-game sweep of Colorado with a 10-4 victory and won its 13th consecutive interleague game in the process..

Williams, who also walked twice, achieved the milestone in the fourth inning as he singled down the right field line before the ball caromed off the wall. He joined Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Don Mattingly and Yogi Berra as the only Yankees to reach 2,000 hits in a career.

Alex Rodriguez finished 2-for-5 in the win and has now reached base safely in 47 consecutive games, extending the longest such streak of his career and the longest streak in the majors this season. The run is also longest by a Yankee since Jeter reached base safely in 57 straight games from September 24, 1998, through June 5, 1999.

During the streak, Rodriguez is 61-for-183 (.333) with 12 homers, 31 RBI and 27 walks. He is hitting .304 for the year.

The Yankees, who are in the midst of a 12-game home-stretch, are 21-8 in New York this season.

San Diego, meanwhile, got the interleague play portion of their schedule off on the wrong foot, as they dropped two of three to the Boston Red Sox, culminating with Thursday's 9-3 setback at Fenway Park.

Ismael Valdez (5-3) took the loss. He lasted just four-plus innings, surrendering six runs on six hits and two walks, fanning three.

The loss dropped the Padres percentage points behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West.

San Diego, which will be playing the fourth leg of a six-game road trip tonight, is 16-15 away from home this season, and has posted a 53-60 record in interleague play.

New York has prospered in interleague play, going 75-48 against National League opponents -- the second-best record in the majors. Only the Oakland A's (78-47) have a better record than New York.

The Yankees took two of three from the Padres in the only other regular season series in June of the 2002 campaign at Qualcomm Stadium. New York also swept the 1998 World Series from San Diego.

CINCINNATI REDS (34-25) AT CLEVELAND INDIANS (26-31), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Cincinnati - Paul Wilson (7-0, 3.18) Cleveland - C.C. Sabathia (3-3, 2.99)

(Sports Network) - The annual Battle of Ohio will take center stage this evening in Cleveland, as the Indians host the NL Central-leading Cincinnati Reds in the first of a three-game interleague set.

Cincinnati will have ace righthander Paul Wilson on the hill tonight. Wilson, who is one short of his career high in wins (eight), has won nine consecutive decisions dating back to last season. The veteran hasn't dropped a decision since August 12, 2003 to Arizona. It's the longest winning streak by a Reds pitcher since Scott Sullivan won 10 straight decisions June 22, 2001 - May 13, 2002.

Wilson is the first Reds pitcher to begin a season 7-0 since reliever Danny Graves went 8-0 in 2000 and the first starter to do it since Mike LaCoss went 8-0 in 1979. No Reds pitcher has begun a season better than 8-0 since Brooks Lawrence set the club record with a 13-0 start in 1956.

Last time on the hill, Wilson didn't record a decision despite allowing just one hit and one run over six innings against Montreal. Wilson struck out and walked four in the contest. The 31-year-old hasn't allowed more than one run in any of his last four starts.

Wilson, a former Tampa Bay Devil Ray, is 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA in his career versus the Indians.

The Reds have finally seen their pitching hit the skids, as they have lost three straight games. Cincinnati suffered another ugly defeat Wednesday, as it fell 17-8 to the Oakland Athletics at the Coliseum.

Reds starter Jose Acevedo (3-5) suffered the loss. Acevedo went just three innings and yielded eight runs on 10 hits.

Adam Dunn smacked a two-run homer and Jacob Cruz added a solo shot for the Reds. Ryan Freel, Ken Griffey Jr., Cruz and Brandon Larson chipped in two hits each in the loss.

Griffey didn't homer for the third straight game, keeping him two short of 500 for his career.

Veteran shortstop Barry Larkin (abdominal strain) missed the game and may not play again tonight. Felipe Lopez went 1-for-4 with two RBI in Larkin's spot.

Cincinnati was outscored, 40-16, in the three-game set. The Reds have seen their lead in the Central dwindle to just a half-game over the hard-charging St. Louis Cardinals.

The Indians have lost two of their last three games, including a 4-1 defeat to Florida Thursday. Jason Davis (1-4) took the loss after permitting three runs on nine hits through seven frames of work.

Victor Martinez produced the only run for the Indians with a solo home run, but left the game in the ninth inning with a right ankle injury. Martinez, who finished 2-for-3 in the contest, is questionable for tonight's game. The catcher has an 11-game hitting streak.

Cleveland will pin its hopes on 23-year-old lefthander C.C. Sabathia this evening. Sabathia has been excellent (1-0) in his last two starts, including a win over Anaheim last Sunday. The southpaw surrendered just four hits over seven scoreless frames, while fanning six and walking two. Sabathia has split his last four decisions.

Sabathia has been quite effective in two career starts against the Reds, going 1-0 with a 2.13 ERA. The Vallejo, CA native has allowed just seven hits and three runs over 12 2/3 innings versus Cincinnati.

The Indians are 17-15 at home this season, while the Reds are 16-15 in foreign ballparks.

Cleveland took two of three meetings between these teams last season at Jacobs Field. Since the 2001 campaign, the Indians own a slight 5-4 advantage over the Reds in this series.

The Indians are 61-63 all-time in interleague action, while Cincinnati is 43-57 against the AL during the regular season.

FLORIDA MARLINS (34-26) AT DETROIT TIGERS (27-32), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Florida - Tommy Phelps (1-0, 3.48) Detroit - Gary Knotts (3-1, 4.12)

(Sports Network) - Ivan Rodriguez helped lead the Marlins to a World Series title in his only season in a Florida uniform. Now the 10-time All-Star catcher and 10-time Gold Glove winner faces his former team for the first time as the Detroit Tigers begin a three-game interleague series with the Marlins tonight from Comerica Park.

Pudge was paid $10 million for his one season with the Marlins and he was an instrumental part of Florida's success, especially in the playoffs when he was tabbed the NL Championship Series MVP. After not coming to terms on a new deal with the Marlins, the Tigers snapped up the free agent and agreed to pay Rodriguez $40 million over four years.

Rodriguez seems to be peaking again at the right time. The 32-year-old, who spent his first 12 years with the Texas Rangers, has a nine-game hitting streak. Over his last 11 games, Rodriguez is hitting .477 (21-for-44) with five runs scored, five doubles and nine RBI, while also drawing five walks resulting in a .531 on-base percentage. He is currently third in the American League with a .350 batting average and this month is hitting .520 (13-for-25).

The Tigers took the final two contests of a three-game set with the Atlanta Braves, winning 7-4 yesterday. Rodriguez had the day off. Dmitri Young's RBI single scored Bobby Higginson with the go-ahead run during a four-run seventh inning.

Mike Maroth (5-3) tossed seven innings to record the win. He allowed four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits, struck out one and walked three. Ugueth Urbina recorded the final three outs for his ninth save.

Gary Knotts gets the start tonight for Detroit. He was acquired by the Tigers along with Rob Henkel and Nate Robertson from Florida, in exchange for Jerrod Fuell and Mark Redman on January 11, 2003. The righthander has won two straight starts, beating Kansas City on Memorial Day and besting the Twins last Saturday by allowing three hits in 7 2/3 shutout innings. He has never faced the Marlins.

Tommy Phelps will get the ball this evening for Florida. The lefthander makes his fourth start of the season and 11th of his major league career. He has split time between the bullpen and rotation this season. Interestingly, Phelps spent two seasons in the Tigers? organization, pitching for Jacksonville in 2000 and Erie and Toledo in 2001 after signing as a free agent in November of 1999.

Phelps hasn't received a decision in his last two outings, May 31 against the Reds and last Saturday against the Mets. Each of his first 14 appearances this season came out of the bullpen. Phelps faces the Tigers for the first time in his career.

Florida enters tonight's slate with a 2 1/2 game lead on Philadelphia for first place in the NL East. The Marlins have won four of their last six games, including a 4-1 triumph at Cleveland last night. Carl Pavano came within one out of a complete game and allowed just four hits to lead the Marlins. Alex Gonzalez homered and scored twice for Florida, while second baseman Luis Castillo extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

These teams have met twice before, in 1997 and 2002 when Florida won two of three games both times.

Colorado is just 41-59 all-time against the American League and has lost 37 of 50 on the road in interleague action. Tampa, meanwhile, has been nothing to write home about in interleague action either, as it went 3-15 last season and is just 40-69 all-time against the Senior Circuit.

The Devil Rays, though, come into tonight's tilt on a winning note, as Victor Zambrano took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Rocco Baldelli belted a three-run homer to give the Devil Rays a 5-2 victory over San Francisco in the rubber match of a three-game interleague set at Tropicana Field.

Zambrano (6-4) was touched for an unearned run in the first, but was able to shut down the Giants until losing his no-hit bid in the seventh on a leadoff single by Damon Minor. The righthander allowed two hits and six walks in 6 1/3 innings to go with six strikeouts.

Aubrey Huff collected a pair of hits and scored once to help the Devil Rays to their second straight win and fifth in seven chances. Tampa Bay also picked up its first interleague series win since June 28-30, 2002 against Florida.

After dropping 28 of their first 38 games, the Devil Rays have now won 13 of 19.

Getting the call tonight for the Devil Rays will be righthander Chad Gaudin, who was recalled from Triple-A Durham when Doug Waechter was placed o the disabled list yesterday. Gaudin started the season in the Rays bullpen and was 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA. He was then sent to Durham on May 19 and made four starts, going 1-1 with a 5.02 ERA. However, the 21-year-old hurler's best start was last Saturday against Norfolk, when he threw five scoreless innings and struck out nine.

Gaudin has never faced the Rockies.

Colorado will counter with righthander Aaron Cook, who is coming off a horrendous outing against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. In that contest the 25-year-old righthander was pounded for eight runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 frames and slipped to 1-1 on the season, while ballooning his ERA to 5.97.

Cook will be facing the Devil Rays for the first time tonight.

The Rockies come into tonight's tilt after getting swept by the New York Yankees, culminating with Thursday's 10-4 setback. Todd Helton hit a two-run homer and Luis Gonzalez and Choo Freeman hit solo shots for the Rockies, who have dropped five straight and seven of their last eight games.

Jason Jennings (5-6) took the loss after being touched for six runs and 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings. Jennings, who walked three and struck out eight, had won his last three starts.

The Rockies will be playing the fourth leg of a six-game road trip tonight and are 8-22 away from home this season, while Tampa is 16-15 at home.

Colorado swept a three-game set from the Devil Rays in the 2002 campaign in the only-other series between the two teams.

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (30-30) AT BALTIMORE ORIOLES (26-29), 7:35 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Francisco - Dustin Hermanson (2-2, 3.86) Baltimore - Erik Bedard (1-2, 5.14)

(Sports Network) - Barry Bonds makes his first trip into Camden Yards for a regular season game tonight as San Francisco begins a three-game interleague series with the Baltimore Orioles.

Bonds, who played the 1993 All-Star game in Baltimore, is scheduled to return to the lineup for the Giants tonight after attending a funeral for the mother of a childhood friend yesterday in San Francisco.

The big question again facing Bonds tonight is if he'll even get a decent pitch to hit. The 39-year-old Bonds, the reigning NL MVP, has been walked a major league-leading 82 times in just 50 games, including 43 times intentionally. He has received at least one free pass in 42 of his 50 contests, including 26 multiple-walk games. Incredibly, Bonds has received more intentional walks by himself than any other major league team.

Bonds is just two homers shy of making the Giants the first franchise in baseball history to have three players club 500 round-trippers with a club. Willie Mays hit 646 homers and Mel Ott belted 511 with the franchise.

The Giants dropped the final two contests of a three-game set against the Devil Rays, losing 5-2 last night at Tropicana Field. San Francisco managed just five hits and Michael Tucker scored both runs for the Giants. Starter Kirk Rueter (2-6) was handed the loss after permitting five runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. He walked three and struck out five.

Righthander Dustin Hermanson will get the start this evening for San Francisco. He earned a victory on Sunday at Colorado, allowing six hits and two runs over seven innings in a 16-4 rout at Coors Field. That snapped a six- start winless streak. It was also the first time he worked at least seven innings since September 23, 2001 at Pittsburgh while he was pitching for St. Louis.

Hermanson will make his eighth career appearance and fourth start versus the Orioles. He owns a 2-1 lifetime mark versus the Orioles. He last started against the Orioles July 17, 1999 at Camden Yards. At that time, Hermanson was pitching for Montreal.

The Orioles will send lefthander Erik Bedard to the mound tonight. He is 0-1 in his last three outings and has two straight no-decisions. Bedard allowed five hits and five runs -- four earned -- in only three innings last Friday against Tampa Bay. This will be his first career appearance against the Giants.

Baltimore has lost six of its last eight games, including last night's 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks at Camden Yards. Daniel Cabrera (3-2), who had a perfect game through six innings in just his sixth major league start, allowed three runs and four hits over seven innings of work.

Cabrera had Cabrera retired the first 18 hitters before walking Scott Hairston to open the seventh. After Steve Finley twice failed to bunt the runner over, the former Oriole took Cabrera's next offering just inside the right field foul pole for a 2-0 Arizona lead.

The Giants are 5-6 on a 14-game road trip, the longest for the team since 1989.

The Orioles are 14-16 at home and have dropped six of their last eight in Baltimore.

This will be the second ever series between the clubs as Baltimore won two of three games in San Francisco in 2002.

ATLANTA BRAVES (29-30) AT CHICAGO WHITE SOX (31-25), 8:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Atlanta - Jaret Wright (4-5, 3.94) Chicago - Scott Schoeneweis (5-3, 3.89)

(Sports Network) - The Chicago White Sox have struggled recently, losing five of their last seven games, but several players are riding spectacular performance streaks.

Tonight, the White Sox begin a three-game interleague series against the Atlanta Braves from U.S. Cellular Field. Chicago enters tonight's action a half game behind Minnesota for first place in the AL Central.

White Sox outfielder Carlos Lee owns a career-high 24-game hitting streak, tied for the longest streak in baseball this season. His streak is three games shy of the cub record, set by Luke Appling in 1936 and matched by Albert Belle in 1997. Lee is hitting .370 (37-for-100) with eight doubles, one home run and 20 RBI during the streak.

There are a couple of other impressive personal offensive runs for the White Sox. Willie Harris owns a career-high 12-game hitting streak, while Frank Thomas has reached base safely in 19 straight games.

On the mound, reliever Shingo Takatsu has thrown 19 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings and has retired 16 straight batters.

The White Sox split two games with the Philadelphia Phillies, but the finale of the three-game set was rained out last night. In the two other games, the teams combined for 48 runs with the White Sox losing 13-10 Wednesday night. Chicago has hit 11 homers in its last two games.

Lefthander Scott Schoeneweis, who was supposed to start last night's game, has been pushed back to tonight for Ozzie Guillen's White Sox. Schoeneweis has surrendered five home runs over his last four starts after yielding one in his previous six games. He is coming off a loss last Saturday against Seattle when he allowed seven hits, five walks and four runs in five innings.

Lefthanded batters have gone 5-for-32 (.156) off Schoeneweis over his last six starts. He has not surrendered a home run to a lefthanded hitter since Rafael Palmeiro took him deep on September 25, 2002 at Texas. Since then, Schoeneweis has held lefties without a round-tripper in his last 65 appearances. This will be Schoeneweis' first career outing versus Atlanta.

The Braves have dropped four of their last six games, including the final two of a three-game set at Detroit. Yesterday, Bobby Cox's club was on the wrong side of a 7-4 final. Trailing 4-1, the Tigers scored two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to take the lead for good. Braves starter Russ Ortiz took a no-hitter into the sixth, but saw it end when the Tigers scored two runs to claw back into the contest.

Chipper Jones smacked a three-run homer for the Braves, while Rafael Furcal went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in the setback.

Jaret Wright tries to win his third straight decision as he starts tonight for Atlanta. The righthander is 2-0 over his last three outings and he's coming off a victory on Sunday against the Phillies when he was charged with six hits and four runs in five innings. He is 2-2 in seven career games versus the White Sox.

These teams met once before in a series, in 2002 with Atlanta sweeping a three-game set at home, outscoring the White Sox 27-5.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (34-26) AT TEXAS RANGERS (33-24), 8:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: St. Louis - Jeff Suppan (5-5, 3.57) Texas - Juan Dominguez (1-1, 2.63)

(Sports Network) - The Texas Rangers aim for their fourth straight victory tonight, as they welcome the St. Louis Cardinals to Ameriquest Field for the opener of a three-game interleague series. Tonight's contest marks the first- ever meeting between these teams.

The Rangers swept a doubleheader with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday. The twinbill was necessary after the teams had rainouts on consecutive days.

In the opener, Chris Stynes' error with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning enabled the go-ahead run to score as Texas earned a 9-7 victory.

Michael Young, Gary Matthews, Jr. and Herbert Perry all homered for the Rangers. Frank Francisco (1-0) picked up his first major league victory with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Francisco Cordero retired the side in order in the ninth to extend his club record with his 19th consecutive save.

Brad Fullmer belted his sixth career grand slam and scored two runs to lead the Rangers over Pittsburgh, 10-4, in the second contest.

Kenny Rogers (9-2) picked up the victory in the second game for the Rangers, who won for the seventh time in nine games. Rogers tossed seven innings and allowed four runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and no walks.

The Cardinals, meanwhile, played the only National League series of the last few days, as they battled their archrivals, the Chicago Cubs, in a three-game set at Wrigley Field.

St. Louis dropped two of three contests and were handed a 12-3 pounding in Thursday's finale. Moises Alou hit a three-run homer to lead Chicago.

John Mabry hit a two-run homer and Ray Lankford added a solo shot for the Cardinals, who lost for only the third time in their last 11 contests. Mabry has been starting in place of the injured Albert Pujols, but the Cardinals are hopeful they can get back their power hitting first baseman tonight. Pujols has missed the last four games with a strained left hamstring.

Dan Haren (0-1) made an emergency start, but was hammered for 10 runs and 10 hits over just 3 2/3 innings to absorb the loss. Haren was filling in for Jason Marquis as the St. Louis righthander was scratched due to tightness in his lower back.

Juan Dominguez gets the call for the Rangers this evening after turning in a solid outing last Saturday against the Yankees.

The 24-year-old righthander picked up the win after surrendering just one run in eight frames. Dominguez also struck out five batters and walked one in the 8-1 victory.

It was just the second outing of the season for Dominguez.

This will be Dominguez's first-ever start against the Cardinals.

Jeff Suppan will try to get back on the winning track tonight as he takes the mound for the Cardinals. Suppan was handed a loss last Sunday against Houston, allowing three runs and eight hits in seven innings of action. He also walked three batters without walking one.

The 29-year-old is 4-0 with a 4.58 earned run average in 12 career games (nine starts) against the Rangers.

The Cardinals are 52-51 all-time in interleague play, while Texas has a 59-66 record against the National League.

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (30-27) AT MINNESOTA TWINS (33-26), 8:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Philadelphia - Brett Myers (4-3, 4.03) Minnesota - Seth Greisinger (2-5, 5.76)

(Sports Network) - The Minnesota Twins try for their fifth straight victory tonight, as they welcome the Philadelphia Phillies to the Metrodome for the opener of a three-game interleague set.

The Twins are coming off a three-game sweep of the New York Mets. They closed the series with a 3-2 win in 15 innings on Thursday night when Michael Ryan grounded a ball past a drawn-in infield to give Minnesota the victory.

The Mets were one out away from salvaging the final game of the set, but pinch-hitter Jose Offerman laced a triple in the bottom of the ninth off New York closer Braden Looper, plating Matthew LeCroy to tie the game.

The come-from-behind effort made a winner of Grant Balfour, who capped eight innings of scoreless relief for Minnesota after starter Kyle Lohse allowed two runs in seven frames. Balfour (1-0) yielded one hit in 1 1/3 innings.

Meanwhile, the Phillies had their game against the Chicago White Sox postponed due to rain last night. The White Sox won Tuesday's opener, 14-11, but the Phillies picked up a 13-10 victory in Wednesday's affair. Bobby Abreu drove in three runs with a pair of homers and Placido Polanco finished 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Phillies to the win.

Jim Thome contributed with a two-run homer for the Phillies, who have won three of their last five games. He is two homers shy of 400 for his career.

Thome has been terrific in interleague play over his career. He is tied with Toronto's Carlos Delgado for the most interleague home runs (37) and second in runs batted in (96).

Brett Myers gets the ball for the Phillies this evening and tries to pick up his fifth win of the season. Myers has been excellent over the last month, posting a 4-1 record and 2.62 earned run average in six starts. Myers picked up a win last Saturday in Atlanta, surrendering two runs and six hits in seven innings. He also struck out five batters and walked four in the solid outing. The 23-year-old righthander has never faced the White Sox in his brief career.

Seth Greisinger will take the ball for the Twins tonight and try to avoid losing his third consecutive start. Greisinger's latest setback came on Saturday against the Detroit Tigers. He surrendered four runs in 5 1/3 innings of work during the 6-0 setback. Greisinger also struck out five batters while walking one. The 28-year-old righthander is making his first-ever appearance against the Phillies.

This is the second meeting between these teams and the first since the 2002 season. The Twins took two out of three in Philadelphia in that set.

Minnesota is 63-60 all-time in interleague play, while the Phillies are 58-62 against the American League.

NEW YORK METS (28-31) AT KANSAS CITY ROYALS (21-36), 8:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: NY Mets - Jae Seo (3-4, 4.53) Kansas City - Darrell May (2-8, 6.14)

(Sports Network) - The New York Mets try to pick up their first interleague win of the season, as they visit the Kansas City Royals for the opener of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium.

The Minnesota Twins swept a three-game set from the Mets this week at the Metrodome. The Twins capped the sweep with an extra-inning win last night. Michael Ryan grounded a ball past a drawn-in infield in the 15th inning to score the game-winning run, as Minnesota picked up a 3-2 triumph.

The Mets were one out away from salvaging the final game of this set, but pinch-hitter Jose Offerman laced a triple in the bottom of the ninth off New York closer Braden Looper, plating Matthew LeCroy to tie the game.

New York wasted another strong effort from starter Matt Ginter, who has pitched well since being called up in mid-May, but has just one win to show for it. The young righthander surrendered just one run on five hits and a walk in 7 2/3 innings.

Cliff Floyd finished 2-for-4 with a homer and drove in both runs for the Mets, losers in five of their last six.

Meanwhile, the Royals dropped two of three in their series with the Montreal Expos. The Expos completed the series by sweeping Thursday's doubleheader.

In the opener at Kauffman Stadium, Zach Day tossed a six-hit shutout and Brad Wilkerson drove in three runs, as the Expos blanked the Royals, 8-0. In Game 2, Sun-Woo Kim took over for injured starter Tomo Ohka and retired all 13 batters he faced to help Montreal to a 7-2 win.

Jae Seo will try to win back-to-back starts for the first time this season, as he heads to the mound for the Mets this evening. Seo pitched well in last Thursday's 4-1 victory over the Florida Marlins, surrendering one run and three hits in six innings. He also struck out four batters, while walking two.

This will be the first-ever career start against the Royals for the 27-year- old Korean.

Meanwhile, Darrell May hopes he can avoid losing his third consecutive start, as he takes the ball for the Royals tonight. May is coming off a poor outing in last Saturday's 8-4 setback to Boston. He was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs -- six earned -- in five innings. May yielded 10 hits, but did strike out six batters and walk just one. The loss dropped May to a dreadful 2-8 start to the season.

May has two career starts against the Mets and is 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA in those outings.

The Mets, who are 62-59 all-time in interleague play, will be playing the fourth leg of a six-game trip on the road, where they are 13-18 this season. Kansas City, 62-62 all-time against the Senior Circuit, is in the midst of a nine-game homestand and is 14-16 at Kauffman Stadium this season.

MONTREAL EXPOS (20-38) AT SEATTLE MARINERS (22-36), 10:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Montreal - Livan Hernandez (3-5, 3.42) Seattle - Ryan Franklin (3-4, 4.61)

(Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners will try and avoid their third consecutive loss tonight when they start a three-game interleague series with the Montreal Expos at Safeco Field.

The Mariners dropped the final two games of their three-game affair with the Houston Astros, including Wednesday's 3-0 setback. The shutout was the American League-leading seventh of the season for Seattle, which was blanked 10 times last year.

The team record is 15, set three times -- 1978, 1983 and 1990.

Freddy Garcia (3-5) was the hard-luck loser in eight strong innings. He yielded just the three third-inning runs, surrendering seven hits and three walks with a season-high nine strikeouts.

Edgar Martinez had two hits in the losing effort and has registered hits in eight of his past 10 games for the Mariners, who have not scored since the fifth inning of Monday's 5-0 win, a span of 21 innings.

Heading to the hill in Friday's opener for the M's will be Ryan Franklin, who is 3-4 on the season with a 4.61 ERA. In his last start on Saturday against the Chicago White Sox, the 31-year-old righthander earned the win, as he allowed two runs and six hits over seven innings.

Franklin was brilliant in his only other appearance against the Expos, as he limited them to four hits over eight scoreless innings last season.

Toeing the rubber this evening for the Expos tonight will be Cuban righthander Livan Hernandez, who is winless in his last four starts. Hernandez did not get a decision in his last trip to the hill on Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds, as he allowed three runs and six hits over eight innings. He also struck out six and walked a batter, but remained at 3-5 on the year to go along with a 3.42 ERA.

Hernandez has faced the Mariners twice in his career and is 1-1 against them with a 3.95 ERA.

Montreal comes into tonight's tilt after sweeping a doubleheader from the Kansas City Royals on Thursday. In the opener at Kauffman Stadium, Zach Day tossed a six-hit shutout and Brad Wilkerson drove in three runs, as the Expos blanked the Royals, 8-0. Day (5-6) walked none and struck out four en route to his second career shutout.

Jamey Carroll went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and Jose Vidro contributed a pair of runs batted in for Montreal in the first game.

Then in the second tilt, Sun-Woo Kim took over for injured starter Tomo Ohka and retired all 13 batters he faced and Tony Batista belted a pair of homers, as the Expos completed the sweep of their interleague doubleheader against the Royals with a 7-2 victory.

Ohka was forced to leave the contest in the third inning after he was hit on his right forearm by a line drive off the bat of Carlos Beltran. Ohka was taken for X-rays, which revealed a broken bone above the wrist. He is expected to be sidelined for 6-to-8 weeks.

The Mariners are in the midst of a 12-game homestand and are 13-18 in Seattle this season. Montreal, meanwhile, is on a 12-game road trip and is 11-21 away from home on the year.

In their only other meeting last year, the Expos took two of three from the Mariners in the Emerald City.

Seattle has posted a 65-60 mark in interleague play, while the Expos are 64-60 against the AL.

PITTSBURGH PIRATES (24-32) AT OAKLAND ATHLETICS (34-24), 10:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Pittsburgh - Kris Benson (4-5, 5.37) Oakland - Tim Hudson (6-2, 2.92)

(Sports Network) - The AL West-leading Oakland Athletics shoot for their sixth consecutive win tonight, when they open up a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at the Coliseum.

The Athletics gained sole possession of first place in the AL West Wednesday night, as they registered a third consecutive beating of the Cincinnati Reds at the Coliseum. Oakland owns a half-game edge over Anaheim in the standings.

Oakland posted a 17-8 thumping of the Reds, completing a three-game sweep and winning for the eighth time in nine games. Damian Miller blasted a grand slam and Erubiel Durazo added a two-run homer, as the A's cruised past Cincy Wednesday. Miller and Durazo each had two hits and a pair of runs scored for the A's in the win.

Jermaine Dye and Mark Kotsay added three hits apiece in the 22-hit barrage. Scott Hatteberg went 1-for-2 to run his hitting streak to a career-high 11 games.

Oakland's 40 runs in the series set a new franchise mark for most runs in a three-game set.

Oakland starter Rich Harden (3-3) earned the win by pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing five runs -- four earned -- on six hits and striking out eight.

The Athletics improved to 15-0 against the NL Central in interleague action, while moving to 6-0 versus the Reds. Oakland owns an interleague-best 78-47 mark.

The A's will have ace righthander Tim Hudson on the hill tonight. Hudson has won three of his last four decisions, including a eight-hit shutout of the Toronto Blue Jays last Saturday. The Columbus, GA native struck out five and walked one in the winning effort. Hudson leads the AL in ERA (2.92) and innings pitched (89 1/3), while ranking third in complete games (two).

Hudson won his only other career outing against Pittsburgh, allowing just five hits and two runs over eight innings.

Taking the ball for the Pirates tonight will be 29-year-old righthander Kris Benson. Benson has dropped two straight starts and four of his last five decisions, including a tough luck defeat to the Chicago Cubs. The Superior, WI native allowed three hits and three runs -- two earned -- through 6 1/3 innings. Benson fanned seven and walked two in the contest.

Benson lost his only other career start against the Athletics, allowing seven hits and five runs through 4 1/3 innings.

Pittsburgh is headed in the opposite direction of the Athletics with five consecutive losses and 10 of its last 11. The Pirates were swept in a doubleheader by the Texas Rangers Thursday, falling 9-7 in the early game and 10-4 in the nightcap.

Pittsburgh starter Oliver Perez struck out 12 over six innings but did not factor in the decision after allowing six runs in the first contest, while walking four and hitting two batters. The lefthander gave up just three hits, all home runs, and registered his highest strikeout total since fanning 13 against Philadelphia on August 3, 2003 while a member of the San Diego Padres. Daryle Ward went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs for the Pirates, while Jason Kendall and Jack Wilson each had three hits and scored twice for Pittsburgh.

Josh Fogg (3-5) suffered the loss in the nightcap. He let up eight runs and nine hits in just four innings. Jason Kendall finished 4-for-5 with a run batted in and a run scored while Jack Wilson homered and drove in three runs for Pittsburgh.

The Pirates have posted an all-time interleague record of 42-58.

These teams haven't met since 2002, when the A's swept a three-game series in Pittsburgh. Hudson defeated Benson in the finale of that series on June 20, 2002.

Pittsburgh is 15-14 on the road this season, while the A's are 20-10 at home on the year.

CHICAGO CUBS (31-28) AT ANAHEIM ANGELS (34-25), 10:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago Cubs - Greg Maddux (5-4, 4.13) Anaheim - John Lackey (3-7, 5.64)

(Sports Network) - A pair of squads meeting for the first time ever in the regular season go head-to-head tonight in Anaheim, as the Angels host the Chicago Cubs for the opener of their three-game interleague set at Angel Stadium.

The squads have met 170 times in Cactus League play in spring training since 1961.

Anaheim halted a five-game skid Thursday, tallying a 5-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Angels pulled within a half-game of the idle first place Oakland Athletics with the victory.

Garret Anderson came off the disabled list and scored the winning run in the eighth inning. The Angels activated Anderson from the 15-day DL earlier Thursday and he helped Anaheim get the win. Anderson had missed 42 games with arthritis in his shoulders, upper back and neck.

Anderson replaces outfielder Raul Mondesi, who was placed on the 15-day DL with a torn right quadriceps muscle.

Casey Kotchman posted two hits and two RBI in the victory, while Jose Guillen added two RBI. Anderson finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk. Angels' infielder David Eckstein's 18-game hitting streak was stopped.

Aaron Sele started for the Angels, but left after six innings with fatigue in his right shoulder. He allowed four runs on five hits. Kevin Gregg (3-0) picked up the win for the Angels with two scoreless relief innings.

Francisco Rodriguez worked around some trouble in the ninth, but held on for his third save.

Anaheim will send 25-year-old righthander John Lackey to the bump this evening. Lackey is winless (0-3) over his last four starts, including an ugly defeat to the Chicago White Sox last week. The Abilene, TX native was hammered nine hits and eight runs over just three innings, while walking two and fanning one.

Lackey will be taking on the Cubs for the first time in his short career.

Chicago will have veteran righthander Greg Maddux on the hill tonight. Maddux, who will be trying for his 295th career victory, has won his last two starts, including a win over Pittsburgh last Sunday. The four-time NL Cy Young winner limited the Pirates to only four hits and one run over seven innings. In his last two starts, Maddux has surrendered only 11 hits and two runs over 13 2/3 innings.

Maddux, a 19-year veteran, will be facing the Angels for the first time in his career.

The Cubs have split their last four games, including a 12-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday. Moises Alou hit a three-run homer to lead the Cubs to the victory.

Derrek Lee added a two-run homer and drove in three runs and Todd Walker contributed a solo shot and had two RBI for the Cubs, who split the four-game set. Ramon Martinez also drove in a pair of runs for the Cubs, who blew the game open with a 10-run fourth inning. Walker and Aramis Ramirez each had three hits.

During the 10-run inning, every Cub hitter got at least one hit and the team had nine consecutive hits in the frame. Chicago's club record for runs and hits in an inning came on September 6, 1883, when it scored 18 runs and also had 18 hits in the seventh inning against the Detroit Wolverines.

Carlos Zambrano (7-2) pitched eight solid innings to win his third straight start. Zambrano permitted just two runs and five hits while striking out seven and walking four. He is unbeaten in five starts at Wrigley Field this year (4-0).

Chicago is beginning its interleague slate, as it owns a 52-51 all-time mark in interleague play. The Angels are 65-60 in interleague action.

The Cubs are 13-14 on the road this season, while the Angels own a 19-12 home mark.

(Sports Network) - The Houston Astros will go for their third consecutive victory tonight, when they begin a three-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.

Houston won the final two contests of its interleague set with the Seattle Mariners, including a 3-0 win on Wednesday at Safeco Field. The Astros pulled within 1 1/2 games of first place Cincinnati in the NL Central.

The Astros' pitching has been outstanding in the last two games, not allowing a single run and only 13 hits. All told, Houston's hurlers have gone 21 consecutive scoreless frames.

Wade Miller (6-6) picked up the win Wednesday, surrendering just five hits over six innings of action. Miller struck out four and walked two in the win, while three relievers combined to twirl three shutout innings. Octavio Dotel twirled a spotless ninth to record his 11th save of the season.

Lance Berkman went 2-for-3 with a RBI, run scored and a walk in the win, while Jeff Bagwell and Richard Hidalgo added a RBI apiece.

Jeff Kent registered a single to center in the eighth frame, pushing his career-best hitting streak to 24 games and tying the Astros' record set by Tony Eusebio in 2000. Kent and Chicago White Sox' Carlos Lee are tied for the major league high hitting streak this year.

The Astros will send 26-year-old righthander Tim Redding to the hill this evening. Redding had a three-decision win streak halted last Saturday, as he gave up nine hits and six runs over four innings. The Rochester, NY native walked two and didn't strike anyone out in the game. Redding has walked nine and struck out just eight over his last four starts.

Redding has struggled in a pair of outings against the Brewers this season, giving up 12 hits and six runs over 8 2/3 innings of action in a pair of losses. For his career, Redding is 2-4 with a 4.74 ERA in eight contests versus Milwaukee.

Milwaukee saw its two-game win streak come to an end Thursday, as it fell 5-4 to the Anaheim Angels at Angel Stadium. The Brewers have split their last six contests overall.

Brewers reliever Jeff Bennett (1-4) was saddled with the loss after he was charged with the two runs without recording an out. Starter Wes Obermueller allowed five hits and three runs over 6 1/3 innings, while walking one.

Geoff Jenkins smacked a three-run homer for the Brewers in the losing effort. Junior Spivey added a pair of hits in the contest. Spivey has recorded three straight two-hit games, while Jenkins has knocked in 12 runs in his last 11 games.

Milwaukee will pin its hopes on 28-year-old lefthander Doug Davis this evening. Davis has lost three of his last four decisions, including a defeat to San Diego last Sunday. The southpaw was tagged for eight hits and five runs over four innings, while fanning one and not walking anyone.

Davis has been unsuccessful in two starts versus Houston this season, going 0-2 with a 6.10 ERA. The Sacramento, CA native is 0-3 with a 4.15 ERA in his career versus the Astros.

The Brewers, who are beginning a 14-day, 12-game homestand, have posted a 14-12 home mark this season. Houston is 17-13 on the road.

Houston has won five of seven meetings between these teams in 2004, including two of three at Miller Park. The Astros most recently took three of four from the Brewers at Minute Maid Park from April 15-18.
