ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (34-25) AT CHICAGO CUBS (30-28), 2:20 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: St. Louis - Jason Marquis (5-4, 4.42) Chicago - Carlos Zambrano (6-2, 2.27)

(Sports Network) - Carlos Zambrano tries to win his third straight start as the Chicago Cubs aim for a split of a four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals today at Wrigley Field.

Zambrano has beaten the Pirates in his last two outings with the Cubs winning by an 18-2 count in that span. The righthander has allowed one run or less in five of his last seven outings, during which time he has gone 4-1 with an ERA of 1.62 (9 ER, 50 IP). Additionally, he hasn't lost at Wrigley Field this season, posting a 3-0 mark with a 1.50 ERA in four starts.

Zambrano has faced St. Louis once this season, recording a career-best 12 strikeouts on May 2, but he didn't get a decision in a 1-0 loss for the Cubs. In that game, he reached 122 pitches after seven innings and was removed after allowing just three hits. Zambrano has never beaten the Cardinals, going 0-3 in seven games (six starts).

The Cubs were walloped 12-4 yesterday. Edgar Renteria smacked a fourth-inning grand slam off Mark Prior, and Jim Edmonds added two homers to help St. Louis pull away. Edmonds finished 3-for-4 with four RBI as the Cardinals picked up their eighth victory in 10 games.

Tony Womack also had three hits to go with a pair of runs scored, as St. Louis moved into a tie for first place in the NL Central with the Cincinnati Reds. A win today would put the Cardinals at the top of the division, as the Reds are idle.

Matt Morris (6-5) earned his first win against Chicago in three tries this year despite a sub-par outing. He yielded four runs on eight hits and four walks in five innings of work.

Prior (0-1), who was dominant in his season debut last week against Pittsburgh, had a much tougher time this go around. He labored through 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on five hits and an uncharacteristic five walks. He struck out just one while throwing 83 pitches.

Jason Marquis has been shaky in his last two outings, but has beaten Pittsburgh and Houston despite allowing a total of 20 hits and seven runs over 12 innings in the pair of starts. The righthander is 4-1 over his last five appearances, but is winless (0-2) against the Cubs in four career matchups.

At 21-10, the Cardinals have the best road record in the majors. St. Louis has won six of its last seven outside Busch Stadium.

Cardinals third baseman Scott Rolen went 1-for-4 yesterday with an RBI double in the first inning. Rolen leads the National League with a .400 (44-for-110) road average. He has hit safely in 10 straight road games.

The Cardinals are 12-6 during their 19-game stretch against NL Central opponents, which ends today. The team will again likely be without first baseman Albert Pujols. He is sidelined with a strained left hamstring, but there is a chance he could pinch-hit today.

The season series is even 5-5. The Cubs have won nine of the last 15 encounters dating back to last season.

                      ATLANTA BRAVES (29-29) AT DETROIT TIGERS (26-32), 1:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Atlanta - Russ Ortiz (6-5, 4.04) Detroit - Mike Maroth (4-3, 4.24)

(Sports Network) - The Atlanta Braves battle the Detroit Tigers tonight in the rubber match of three-game interleague series at Comerica Park.

Russ Ortiz tries to rebound from a loss last Saturday against Philadelphia, as he takes the mound for the Braves tonight. He was touched for five runs and nine hits in six innings of action. Ortiz did strike out eight batters, but also walked three in the 5-3 setback.

The loss snapped Ortiz's string of victories at three consecutive starts.

This will be Ortiz's first-ever appearance against the Tigers.

The Tigers hand the ball to Mike Maroth this evening and the young lefthander hopes to pick up his first victory in nearly a month.

Maroth was 3-1 through the first month of the season, but has been 1-2 in seven outings since then. His last victory came May 13 against the Oakland Athletics.

The 26-year-old posted a no decision last Friday in Minnesota after allowing two runs and five hits in seven frames. He struck out five batters and walked one.

Maroth has one career start against the Braves and was handed a loss in that game.

The Tigers evened the series at one game apiece with a win on Wednesday. Eric Munson blasted a two-run homer and Carlos Guillen added a solo shot to lead Detroit to a 4-2 win over Atlanta at a rainy Comerica Park.

Guillen finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Tigers, who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Jeremy Bonderman started for the Tigers, making it through two innings and giving up a hit and a walk before storms delayed play.

Craig Dingman (1-0) earned the first big league win of his career by pitching three scoreless innings in relief and allowing just three hits.

Chipper Jones and Eli Marrero both homered for the Braves, who had a two-game win streak snapped.

The Braves have been stellar in interleague play, posting a 72-48 all-time record. Meanwhile, the Tigers have compiled a less than stellar 54-69 mark against the National League.

Tigers catcher Ivan Rodriguez is fifth all-time with 142 hits in interleague action.

COLORADO ROCKIES (21-37) AT NEW YORK YANKEES (37-20), 1:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Colorado - Jason Jennings (5-5, 6.68) NY Yankees - Jose Contreras (2-2, 7.11)

(Sports Network) - Jason Jennings targets his fourth consecutive win this evening when the Colorado Rockies conclude their three-game interleague affair against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Jennings' latest win came on Saturday against the San Francisco Giants, as he allowed a run and four hits over 5 2/3 innings and improved to 5-5 on the season, while lowering his earned run average to a still lofty 6.68.

The 25-year-old righthander absorbed the loss in his only-ever appearance against the Yankees, allowing six runs and nine hits in just three innings of work.

New York will counter with Cuban righthander Jose Contreras, who is coming off a horrendous outing in his last trip to the hill last Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles. In that contest, Contreras allowed five runs, just one earned, on two hits in just two-thirds of an inning. He also walked three, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 6-5 win.

Contreras, 2-2 on the year with a 7.11 ERA, has never faced the Rockies.

In the middle contest of the set on Wednesday, Gary Sheffield and Derek Jeter each hit a two-run homer to lead New York to a 7-5 come-from-behind victory. Bernie Williams also homered and scored twice for the Yankees, who have won 13 of their last 15 games and moved 3 1/2 games in front of the Boston Red Sox in the American League East.

Miguel Cairo went 4-for-4 with two runs and Jorge Posada contributed three hits in the win, as the Yankees won their 12th consecutive interleague contest.

Paul Quantrill (5-2) retired the only three hitters he faced to pick up the victory, while Mariano Rivera tossed a scoreless ninth for his 25th save..

Matt Holliday had two hits, knocked in a run and scored once for Colorado, which has lost four straight and six of their last seven games.

New York fell behind, 5-0, before scoring seven unanswered runs to post its major league-leading 24th come-from-behind victory of the season. The Yanks have overcome a deficit of at least four runs six times this season after not doing it once last year.

Joe Kennedy (4-4) was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs -- six earned -- on nine hits over six innings.

Jeromy Burnitz extended his hitting streak to 13 games in the setback.

All the news was not good, though, for New York, as starting pitcher Kevin Brown was forced to leave the game after the second inning with stiffness in his lower back.

On the milestone watch, Williams needs three hits to become the seventh Yankee to reach 2,000. Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Don Mattingly, and Yogi Berra are also on that list. He is also just one home run away from tying Graig Nettles (250) for sixth place on the Yankees all-time list.

Alex Rodriguez finished 1-for-3 in the win and has now reached base safely in 46 consecutive games, extending the longest such streak of his career and the longest streak in the majors this season. The run is also longest by a Yankee since Jeter reached base safely in 57 straight games from September 24, 1998, through June 5, 1999.

During the streak, Rodriguez is 59-for-178 (.331) with 12 homers, 29 RBI and 27 walks. He is hitting .301 for the year.

The Yankees, who are in the midst of a 12-game home-stretch, are 20-8 in New York this season. The Rockies, meanwhile, will be playing the third leg of a six-game road trip tonight and are 8-21 away from home this season.

This is the second-ever series between New York and Colorado, as the two teams combined for 70 runs in a three-game matchup during the 2002 campaign, with the Yankees taking two of three.

The Yankees have prospered in interleague play, going 74-48 against National League opponents -- the second-best record in the majors. Only the Oakland A's (78-47) have a better record than New York.

Colorado, though, is just 41-58 against the AL and has lost 36 of 49 on the road in interleague action.

MONTREAL EXPOS (18-38) AT KANSAS CITY ROYALS (21-34), 2:10 P.M. (DH), GAME 2

Probable Starting Pitchers: Montreal - Zach Day (4-6, 3.52) Tomo Ohka (3-5, 3.13)

                      Kansas City - Dennys Reyes (2-0, 3.19) Jimmy Gobble (3-3, 4.76)

(Sports Network) - Well rested after Wednesday's game was postponed due to inclement weather, the Kansas City Royals and the Montreal Expos will return to Kauffman Stadium for a doubleheader that will conclude their three-game interleague set.

Kansas City veteran lefthander Dennys Reyes will shoot for his third consecutive win in the first of the doubleheader. Reyes, who has split time between the rotation and the bullpen this season, has won consecutive starts.

The southpaw defeated Detroit last week, holding the Tigers to six hits and five runs over 6 2/3 innings of action. Reyes walked four and struck out one in the win. The 27-year-old hasn't lost a major league decision since September 18, 2002.

Reyes has tallied no record in 11 career outings against the Expos, allowing 16 hits and nine runs -- eight earned -- over 20 innings of action.

Taking the hill for Montreal in the first game will be 25-year-old righthander Zach Day. Day has split his last four starts, including a win over Cincinnati last Friday. The Cincinnati native held his hometown team to four hits and two runs through six innings, while fanning five and walking three.

Day has appeared in one career game against the Royals, tossing one scoreless inning of relief.

The Royals will have lefthander Jimmy Gobble on the mound in the finale. Gobble has won two of his last three decisions, including a victory over Boston last Friday. The southpaw surrendered five hits and two runs over six innings, while fanning one and not permitting a free pass. Gobble has split six decisions this season.

Gobble will be facing the Expos for the first time in his career.

Montreal will pin its hopes on 28-year-old righthander Tomo Ohka in the final contest. Ohka is unbeaten (3-0) over his last six starts, including a no- decision against Cincinnati last Saturday. The twirler allowed eight hits and three runs through seven innings to the Reds, while fanning four and walking two.

Ohka has split a pair of career starts against Kansas City, giving up 13 hits and only three earned runs over 12 innings of action.

The Royals got the best of the Expos in the opener Tuesday, posting a 4-2 win. Zack Greinke tossed seven shutout innings to earn his first major league victory. Greinke (1-1) scattered three hits and struck out five without a walk on 96 pitches for the Royals. The rookie didn't allow more than one runner in an inning and permitted just one to reach second in his fourth big league start.

Carlos Beltran snapped an 0-for-10 slump with a two-run homer, while Joe Randa finished with two hits and scored twice for the Royals. Kansas City has won three of its last five games.

Ken Harvey, who has a 15-game hitting streak, sat out to rest his bruised forearm. Harvey, the American League's leading hitter (.375), is expected to return to the field today. Harvey is hitting .508 during the streak.

Endy Chavez finished with three hits for the Expos, who suffered their third straight loss and have dropped five of their last seven.

Tony Armas Jr. (0-1) absorbed the loss in his second outing since returning from shoulder surgery. He was charged with three runs on four hits in five innings.

Montreal has announced that Chad Cordero will take over the closing duties from Rocky Biddle. Cordero is 1-1 with a 2.18 earned run average in 27 games and opponents are hitting just .203 against him.

Neither of these teams has been terribly effective during interleague action over the years, as Montreal is 62-60 and Kansas City is just 52-70.

The Expos swept the only other series between these teams in 2002 at Olympic Stadium.

PITTSBURGH PIRATES (24-30) AT TEXAS RANGERS (31-24), 5:05 P.M. (DH)

                      Probable Starting Pitchers: Pittsburgh - Oliver Perez (3-3, 3.20) Josh Fogg (3-4, 5.98) Texas - Joaquin Benoit (2-2, 5.77) Kenny Rogers (8-2, 3.64)

(Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Pirates and Texas Rangers hope the rains will subside so they can wrap up their three-game interleague series with today's doubleheader at Ameriquest Field.

Tuesday's game was postponed due to rain and rescheduled for Thursday. However, the weather was bad again on Wednesday and another game was rained out. It was the eighth time the Pirates had a game postponed due to bad weather, marking the most rainouts for Pittsburgh since it had eight in 1983.

Oliver Perez tries to pick up his first victory in nearly a month, as he takes the ball for the Pirates in tonight's opener. His last win came via a complete game performance May 13 in Colorado.

However, the 22-year-old lefthander has been 0-2 in three starts since that victory. Perez surrendered three runs in seven innings last Thursday against St. Louis. He was handed the loss in the 4-2 setback.

This will be Perez's first-ever appearance against the Rangers.

Joaquin Benoit hopes to rebound from a tough outing his last time out as he counter for Texas in the opener.

Benoit's last start came on May 26 in a 4-0 loss against the White Sox. He surrendered four runs in just four innings of work.

Benoit has never faced the Pirates before.

Josh Fogg will pitch for Pittsburgh in the second game and try to win his fourth consecutive decision.

Fogg turned in a solid effort last Friday against the White Sox, but walked away with a no decision. He allowed just four hits in seven scoreless innings, while striking out five batters and walking one.

He had won his previous three starts and is 3-0 with a 2.91 earned run average in his last four outings.

Fogg has one career start against the Rangers and was dealt a loss in that outing. He was charged with four runs in five innings during that start.

The Rangers will hand the ball to their ace Kenny Rogers in tonight's second test, as the lefthander hopes to rebound from his tough outing from a week ago.

Rogers last appeared on Friday in New York and was touched for six runs and eight hits in just four innings. He allowed five home runs in the setback.

The 39-year-old lefthander leads the American League with eight victories this season,

Rogers has been great in three career starts against the Pirates, going 1-0 with a miniscule 0.89 ERA.

The Rangers picked up a victory in Monday's opener. Hank Blalock knocked in the winning run with an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Texas over Pittsburgh, 6-5.

Mark Teixeira belted a two-run homer for the Rangers, who moved seven games over .500 and within 1 1/2 games of Anaheim for the American League West division lead. Texas has won five of its last seven contests.

Craig Wilson posted a two-run homer for the Pirates, who have lost eight of their last nine outings.

The Pirates have an all-time interleague record of 42-56, while Texas is 57-66 against the National League. Pittsburgh went 5-7 in interleague play last season and the Rangers were a dismal 4-14.

This will be the second all-time series between Pittsburgh and Texas. The Rangers earned a three-game sweep over Pittsburgh from June 21-23, 2002.

LOS ANGELES DODGERS (30-26) AT TORONTO BLUE JAYS (27-32), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Los Angeles - Kazuhisa Ishii (7-3, 3.64) Toronto - Josh Towers (1-1, 4.60)

(Sports Network) - The Toronto Blue Jays will take aim at a three-game sweep tonight, when they close out their interleague series with the Los Angeles Dodgers at SkyDome. Toronto has swept two other series this season -- both at home.

Toronto continued its success Wednesday, posting a 4-0 victory. Miguel Batista struck out eight batters in a four-hit shutout to pace the Blue Jays to the win. Batista (4-4) earned his third career shutout and first since blanking the Padres last July 18 as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was his second complete game this season.

Howie Clark homered for the second straight game, one day after hitting his first career home run and driving in four runs in Toronto's 7-1 win Tuesday. The Blue Jays have won two straight on the heels of a two-game slide.

Vernon Wells had two hits on Wednesday night and has hit safely in 27 of his last 29 games. Toronto improved to 19-9 when it gets on the board first, while being just 8-23 when its opponent scores first.

Toronto improved to 60-63 all-time in interleague action, as it picked up its sixth win in their last eight interleague sets at SkyDome.

The Blue Jays are 16-14 at home this season, including wins in seven of their last eight.

The Blue Jays will have 27-year-old righthander Josh Towers on the mound this evening. Towers has split his last two starts, including a victory over Oakland last week. The hurler surrendered just six hits and one run over seven innings, while fanning and walking four in the win.

Towers will be heading to the hill for the first time in his career against the Dodgers.

Taking the ball tonight for the Dodgers will be veteran lefthander Kazuhisa Ishii. The southpaw has won consecutive starts, including a victory over Arizona last Friday. Ishii held the Diamondbacks to four hits and three runs over five frames, while walking six and striking out two. The Japanese hurler has had some control problems this season, walking a National League high 48 batters.

Ishii has made one career start against Toronto, allowing four hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings of a victory on June 19, 2002.

Los Angeles starter Jose Lima (4-2) took the loss Wednesday in seven strong innings after going perfect through three. He yielded four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.

Cesar Izturis was 0-for-4 in the loss, ending his hitting streak at 15 games. The Dodgers have now dropped three straight and were shutout for the fifth time this season.

Juan Encarnacion posted a double in the third inning last night, push his hitting streak to eight games. Encarnacion is batting .438 (14-for-22) over that span.

Los Angeles, which is 2-3 so far on its nine-game road trip, owns a 15-14 record in foreign ballparks this season. The Dodgers are 60-52 all-time in interleague action.

Los Angeles took two of three meetings between these teams in 2002 at Dodger Stadium.

SAN DIEGO PADRES (32-26) AT BOSTON RED SOX (34-24), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Diego - Ismael Valdez (5-2, 4.33) Boston - Curt Schilling (7-3, 3.07)

(Sports Network) - Curt Schilling tries for his fourth straight win this evening when the Boston Red Sox play the rubber match of their three-game set with the San Diego Padres at Fenway Park.

Schilling, acquired this past offseason from Arizona, has more than lived up to expectations in Beantown and has posted a 7-3 record to go along with a 3.07 earned run average. He is also second in the AL in strikeouts with 73, 11 behind teammate Pedro Martinez.

The 37-year-old righthander's latest win came on Saturday against the Kansas City Royals, as he allowed three runs and six hits in seven innings. He also fanned three and walked a batter in the win.

Schilling has faced the Padres 35 times in his career -- 23 starts -- and is 15-9 against them with a 2.71 ERA.

San Diego will counter with righthander Ismael Valdez, who is coming off a terrific outing against the Milwaukee Brewers in his last outing on Saturday. In that contest the 30-year-old veteran tossed a four-hit shutout, as he improved to 5-2 on the year, while lowering his ERA to 4.33.

Over his last two starts, both wins, Valdez has yielded two runs and 13 hits in 15 innings.

Valdez is 0-2 lifetime against the Red Sox with a 9.00 ERA in two starts.

In the middle contest of the set on Wednesday, Kahlil Greene went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored to help the Padres spoil the return of Nomar Garciaparra with an 8-1 win.

Garciaparra, batting fifth in the lineup, singled in his very first at-bat and lined out to left to finish 1-for-2 before leaving in the sixth inning after a lengthy rain delay. The All-Star shortstop was making his season debut after suffering a heel injury in spring training that caused him to miss the first 57 games of the year.

Phil Nevin added a two-run homer and Brian Giles had two hits and an RBI for the Padres, who are winners in three of their last four. Mark Loretta had three hits and scored twice, as San Diego evened this series at a game apiece.

Brian Lawrence (8-3) worked five shutout innings before the delay to pick up his sixth win in his last seven decisions and snap Boston's three-game win streak. The righthander struck out five and did not walk a batter while surrendering five hits.

Red Sox starter Bronson Arroyo (2-4) was dealt the loss, his third in a row. He yielded two runs -- one earned -- on six hits and a pair of walks in five innings before giving way to Tim Wakefield.

****** Damon had a homer and Kevin Millar had two of Boston's seven hits, as the Red Sox slipped 3 1/2 games back of the New York Yankees in the American League East.

Boston took two of three from the Padres in the only-ever series between these teams back in 2002 in San Diego.

San Diego, which will be playing the third leg of a six-game road trip tonight, is 16-14 away from home this season, while Boston is 19-10 at home.

The Red Sox are 57-66 all-time in interleague play with San Diego posting a 53-59 all-time mark against the AL.

                      FLORIDA MARLINS (33-26) AT CLEVELAND INDIANS (26-30), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Florida - Carl Pavano (5-2, 3.33) Cleveland - Jason Davis (1-3, 5.32)

(Sports Network) - Carl Pavano has been one of the most durable pitchers for the Marlins this season and tonight he aims to win his third straight decision, as Florida plays the rubber match of a three-game interleague set against the Cleveland Indians at Jacobs Field.

Pavano, a 28-year-old righthander, is 2-0 over his last three outings and is coming off a victory against the Mets on Friday when he allowed just one run in 7 2/3 innings. He has taken the load off the bullpen for the most part the last six weeks, going at least seven innings in each of his last eight starts. Only twice this season, he has not lasted at least seven frames. He has also given up more than three runs in only three of his starts this year.

The Marlins are 9-2 in Pavano's 11 starts this season, including 5-1 in his six road starts. A win tonight would match Pavano's career best winning streak (three games) for the sixth time. This will be his first career appearance against the Indians.

The Indians, who evened the series with an 8-1 rout last night, will send Jason Davis to the hill tonight. The 24-year-old righthander is winless (0-1) over his last six outings. His only victory of the season came May 4 versus Boston.

Davis' last effort was a no-decision last Friday at Anaheim when he allowed seven hits and five runs -- four earned -- in 5 1/3 innings. This marks his first career start against Florida.

Last night, Jake Westbrook threw eight strong innings to lead the Indians in the romp. Westbrook (5-2) allowed only one run on six hits, striking out four and walking none. He induced 16 ground ball outs, throwing 101 pitches in his longest outing since throwing a complete game on April 25 in a 3-2 win over Tampa Bay.

A.J. Burnett (0-2) suffered the loss, making just his second start since returning from major elbow surgery that sidelined him for over a year. He was charged with eight runs on 12 hits, striking out three and walking two in 4 1/3 innings. He has not recorded a win in his last 10 starts, going 0-4 over that span.

Miguel Cabrera added a homer for the Marlins, who have dropped two of three and six of nine.

Jody Gerut had three hits and scored twice and Casey Blake smacked a two-run homer for the Indians, who have won four of five. Travis Hafner and Ben Broussard each added two hits and two RBI, as Cleveland beat the Marlins for the first time in five interleague contests.

Florida enters tonight's play alone in first place in the National League East -- two games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Cleveland catcher Victor Martinez and Florida second baseman Luis Castillo both have 10-game hit streaks.

                      ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (23-36) AT BALTIMORE ORIOLES (26-28), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Arizona - Casey Fossum (0-4, 7.33) Baltimore - Daniel Cabrera (3-1, 3.90)

(Sports Network) - Lefthander Casey Fossum aims for his first win since last August as the Arizona Diamondbacks play the rubber contest of their three-game series versus the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.

Fossum will make his sixth start of 2004. He lost a 7-3 decision last Friday to the Dodgers when he allowed eight hits and five runs in four frames. Arizona has dropped all of his starts this season. His last win came August 21 last year against Oakland when he was a member of the Red Sox.

Fossum is 2-2 in eight games (four starts) versus Baltimore with a 4.15 ERA.

The Orioles will go with rookie righty Daniel Cabrera on the mound tonight. He is coming off a no-decision a week ago to the Yankees when he allowed six hits and two runs in six innings. Cabrera had won three of his first four starts before that outing.

Last night, Miguel Tejada blasted a three-run homer to snap a tie in the seventh inning to lift the Orioles to an 8-2 win. Luis Matos added a two-run shot in the seventh for the Orioles, who have won two of their last three.

Baltimore reliever John Parrish (4-2) earned the win, pitching just one-third on an inning in the seventh.

Luis Gonzalez had two hits and drove in a run for the Diamondbacks, who had a two-game win streak snapped. Gonzalez has a nine-game hitting streak.

Diamondbacks reliever Stephen Randolph (1-1) was saddled with the loss by giving up four runs -- three earned -- on two hits in 1 2/3 innings.

The Diamondbacks were the most successful National League team against AL competition last year, going 11-4 in their 15 interleague efforts. The Diamondbacks are 49-44 all-time against the American League.

Baltimore is 51-72 all-time versus the National League. Last year the Orioles went 5-13 versus the NL.

Arizona met Baltimore once before, winning twice in a three-game set at Bank One Ballpark during the 2002 season.

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (30-29) AT TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS (22-34), 7:15 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Francisco - Kirk Rueter (2-5, 5.29) Tampa Bay - Victor Zambrano (5-4, 5.60)

(Sports Network) - The San Francisco Giants try to get back in the win column this evening, as they face the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the rubber match of a three-game interleague series at Tropicana Field.

The Devil Rays evened the series with a victory in Wednesday's game. Jose Cruz Jr. snapped a tie with a single in the 10th inning to give Tampa Bay a 4-3 win.

Julio Lugo hit a two-run double for the Devil Rays, who scored three runs in the eighth to overcome a 1-0 deficit and win for the fourth time in six games.

Deivi Cruz doubled twice and Marquis Grissom added two hits for the Giants, who had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Toby Hall added an RBI single in the eighth and extended his hitting streak to 10 games for Tampa Bay, which lost a 3-1 lead before loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the 10th against Tyler Walker (4-1).

Lugo, Geoff Blum and Carl Crawford each worked a walk before Cruz drove in Lugo with a hit down the right-field line.

Danys Baez (2-1) blew his first save of the season, but earned the victory despite permitting two runs on three hits in two innings.

Kirk Rueter will try to rebound from a tough outing, as the lefthander takes the ball for the Giants this evening.

Rueter was touched for five runs -- four earned -- in 4 2/3 innings against Colorado last week. He was dealt the loss, while striking out one batter and walking two.

The 33-year-old lefthander is 1-2 with a 4.96 earned run average in his last five starts.

This will be Rueter's first-ever appearance against the Devil Rays.

The Devil Rays will turn to Victor Zambrano this evening, as the righthander tries to win his third straight decision.

Zambrano had won back-to-back starts before getting pounded in Baltimore last Friday. He was handed a no decision despite being touched for six runs in just 3 2/3 innings. Zambrano struck out two batters and walked six.

Zambrano has allowed six earned runs in four of his last six starts and is 2-3 with an 8.03 ERA in those outings.

The 28-year-old has never faced the Giants in his career.

The Giants have an impressive interleague record, going 62-50 all-time against the American League. However, the Devil Rays have a terrible history in interleague play with a 39-69 mark.

Giants slugger Barry Bonds is expected to miss tonight's game to attend the funeral of a friend's mother.

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (30-27) AT CHICAGO WHITE SOX (31-25), 8:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Philadelphia - Brett Myers (4-3, 4.03) Chicago - Scott Schoeneweis (5-3, 3.89)

(Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox will try to keep the offensive coming, as they play the rubber match of a three-game interleague set at U.S. Cellular Field.

The White Sox won Tuesday's opener, 14-11, but the Phillies picked up a 13-10 victory in Wednesday's affair. Bobby Abreu drove in three runs with a pair of homers and Placido Polanco finished 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Phillies to the win.

Jim Thome contributed with a two-run homer for the Phillies, who have won three of their last five games.

Thome has been terrific in interleague play over his career. He is tied with Toronto's Carlos Delgado for the most interleague home runs (37) and second in runs batted in (96).

Eric Milton (8-1) earned the win despite allowing six runs on nine hits over five innings.

Miguel Olivo and Joe Crede each hit a two-run homer and Aaron Rowand hit a solo shot and finished with three RBI for Chicago, which has lost three of its last four games. Paul Konerko and Jose Valentin also went deep for the White Sox, who have hit 11 homers in the first two games of the series.

Carlos Lee ended 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and pushed his hitting streak to 24 games. He is tied with Jeff Kent for the longest hitting streak in the majors this season. Kent's hit string is also currently alive.

Lee's streak is just three games shy of the franchise record of 27 games set by Luke Appling in 1936 and matched by Albert Belle in 1997.

Brett Myers gets the ball for the Phillies this evening and tries to pick up his fifth win of the season.

Myers has been excellent over the last month, posting a 4-1 record and 2.62 earned run average in six starts.

Myers picked up a win last Saturday in Atlanta, surrendering two runs and six hits in seven innings. He also struck out five batters and walked four in the solid outing.

The 23-year-old righthander has never faced the White Sox in his brief career.

The White Sox will counter with Scott Schoeneweis this evening, as the lefthander tries to avoid losing back-to-back starts.

Schoeneweis was touched for four runs and seven hits in five innings against Seattle. He also struck out four batters and walked five in the 4-2 setback.

The 30-year-old has one career outing against the Phillies, but it was out of the bullpen.

This is the Phillie's first-ever trip to the Southside of Chicago. The only other meeting between these teams came in Philadelphia during the 2002 campaign. The White Sox won two of three in that series at Veterans Stadium.

Chicago is 67-56 all-time in interleague play, while the Phillies are 58-62.

NEW YORK METS (28-30) AT MINNESOTA TWINS (32-26), 8:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: NY Mets - Matt Ginter (1-0, 2.81) Minnesota - Kyle Lohse (2-4, 5.61)

(Sports Network) - Matt Ginter tries to get the New York Mets back on track this evening, as they try to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the Minnesota Twins in the finale of the interleague set at the Metrodome.

Ginter has been great for the Mets, but has just one win to show for his efforts, while pitching to a 2.81 earned run average. In fact Ginter's lone win came in his worst outing of the season, as he earned the victory despite allowing a season-high five runs.

The 26-year-old righthander has not earned a decision in his last three starts, but has allowed just two runs and 10 hits over 15 innings in that time.

In his last outing on Saturday against the Florida Marlins, Ginter surrendered a pair of runs on six hits over six innings, but saw his team blow the lead and eventually fall 7-6.

Ginter will be making his first-ever start against the Twins, but has faced them eight times out of the bullpen without recording a decision.

The Twins will counter with righthander Kyle Lohse, who is 2-4 on the year with a 5.61 ERA. In his last outing on Friday against the Detroit Tigers, Lohse gave up two runs and six hits over six frames, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 3-2 win.

Lohse has never faced the Mets.

In the middle contest of the set on Wednesday, Johan Santana struck out a career-high tying 10, allowing only one run in seven innings of work, as Minnesota held on for a 5-3 win. Santana (3-4) ended a personal four-game losing streak, yielding just six hits and not walking a batter for his first win since May 13.

Jacque Jones had a three-run homer and Matt LeCroy added a solo shot for the Twins, who have won the first two of this three-game interleague set for their third straight victory.

Mike Piazza drove in a pair and Gerald Williams hit his first homer as a Met, as New York lost its fourth game in five tries since winning four in a row. Williams was called up from Triple-A Norfolk prior got the game.

Piazza went 2-for-4 for New York, which lost despite outhitting the Twins 9-8. Piazza has the highest batting average in the history of interleague play and is hitting .344 (31-for-90) over his last 24 games.

Since moving primarily to first base Piazza has steadily seen his average rise, jumping 28 points to .308 since the middle of May. He has also hit safely in 20 of his last 23 games.

The Mets, who are 62-58 all-time in interleague play, will be playing the third leg of a six-game trip on the road, where they are 13-17 this season. Minnesota, 62-60 all-time against the Senior Circuit, is in the midst of a 13- game homestand and is 19-12 at home this season.

The Mets took two of three from the Twins in the only other series between these teams back in the 2002 campaign.

                      CINCINNATI REDS (34-24) AT OAKLAND ATHLETICS (33-24), 10:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Cincinnati - Jose Acevedo (3-4, 4.26) Oakland - Rich Harden (2-3, 3.67)

(Sports Network) - The red hot Oakland Athletics will attempt to continue their interleague dominance tonight, as they try to complete a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds at the Coliseum.

Oakland has won four straight and seven of its last eight, including a 10-6 win over the Reds Tuesday. With the victory, the Athletics improved to an all- time interleague-best 77-47 and moved to 14-0 against the NL Central.

Damian Miller tied a career high with five RBI to pace the A's to the win, while Scott Hatteberg continued his hot streak with three hits and two RBI. Hatteberg now has 13 RBI over his last four games. He also has a 10-game hitting streak.

Bobby Crosby added a homer, three runs scored and two RBI in the victory. Crosby is 5-for-7 in the first two games of the series.

Barry Zito (4-3) went the first five innings to earn the win for the Athletics, who have won seven of their last eight. Zito (4-3) improved to 2-0 in his last seven starts. He gave up five runs on eight hits in five innings.

Oakland has scored 35 runs in its last four games, including a 13-2 rout of the Reds in Monday's opener. The A's have pulled into a tie with Anaheim for first place in the AL West.

This marks the third of 12 straight games against NL Central squads for the Athletics, who will also play Pittsburgh, St. Louis and the Chicago Cubs during the run.

The Athletics will send 22-year-old righthander Rich Harden to the mound tonight. Harden doesn't have a decision over his last three starts, including a contest against Toronto last Friday. The hurler limited the Blue Jays to four hits and one run over seven frames, while fanning seven and walking three in the eventual 6-1 loss.

Harden has never faced the Reds in his career.

Taking the ball for the Reds tonight will be 26-year-old righthander Jose Acevedo. Acevedo has dropped four of his last five decisions, including a defeat to Montreal last Friday. The Dominican hurler was tagged for eight hits and four runs over seven innings, while fanning seven and walking two to the Expos.

Acevedo will be taking the mound against Oakland for the first time in his career.

Jung Bong (0-1) was recalled from the minors earlier in the day when Austin Kearns was placed on the disabled list with a sore right thumb. Bong was lit up for nine runs -- four earned -- on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Cincinnati's Ken Griffey Jr. entered the series needing just two home runs to join the 500-homer club, but he is still trying for his first of the set. He was 1-for-3 on Monday and finished 1-for-5 with a pair of strikeouts last night.

Barry Larkin hit a three-run homer for the Reds, who had won seven of nine before this series. Larkin, though, left the game with an abdominal injury in the fourth inning. The veteran will likely miss several games due to the injury.

D'Angelo Jimenez has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 contests, and reached base safely in 48 of his 58 games.

Cincinnati still owns a one-game lead over second place St. Louis in the NL Central.

The A's are 5-0 in interleague play against the Reds. The teams met in 2002 with Oakland sweeping a series in Cincinnati. This series marks Cincinnati's first trip to Oakland since the 1990 World Series, when the Reds swept the Athletics.

The Reds are 43-56 all-time in interleague play and have scored the fewest runs (430) of any team since regular season play began between the NL and AL. The Reds went 7-5 last year versus the American League.
