Wednesday, June 9th (All times eastern)
          ATLANTA BRAVES (29-28) AT DETROIT TIGERS (25-32), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Atlanta - John Thomson (5-2, 3.79) Detroit - Jeremy Bonderman (4-5, 6.31)

(Sports Network) - John Thomson tries to win his fourth consecutive start tonight, as he takes the mound for the Atlanta Braves in the middle test of a three-game interleague series against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

Thomson has been spectacular over his last three starts, picking up wins in all three games and posting a 0.85 earned run average in 21 innings. He helped Atlanta to an 8-4 victory over the Phillies last Thursday, surrendering just one run in seven innings of work.

The 30-year-old righthander is 2-0 with a 3.78 ERA in three career starts against the Tigers.

Jeremy Bonderman will take the ball for the Tigers tonight and try to snap a three-game losing streak.

Bonderman went 4-2 through his first eight starts of the season, but has been handed losses in his last three outings. The most recent setback came last Thursday against Kansas City when he was pounded for seven runs and nine hits in just three innings of action.

The 21-year-old righthander has never faced the Braves in his young career.

Mark DeRosa scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning on Danny Patterson's throwing error, as the Braves beat the Tigers 4-3 in the opener on Tuesday.

DeRosa, who ended 1-for-4, led off the 10th with a double. Rafael Furcal then laid down a sacrifice bunt that Patterson fielded cleanly. Patterson (0-3), however, threw wildly to first and the ball rolled into right field, allowing DeRosa to score all the way from second.

Furcal went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while ****** Estrada and Andruw Jones each scored a run for the Braves, who have won two straight.

Brandon Inge smacked a two-run homer and finished 2-for-4 for Detroit, which has dropped two straight and four of five. Rondell White added an RBI double, while Alex Sanchez and Dmitri Young each stroked two hits in the setback.

The Braves have been stellar in interleague play, posting a 72-47 all-time record. Meanwhile, the Tigers have compiled a less than stellar 53-69 mark against the National League.

Tigers catcher Ivan Rodriguez is fifth all-time with 140 hits in interleague action.

LOS ANGELES DODGERS (30-25) AT TORONTO BLUE JAYS (26-32), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Los Angeles - Jose Lima (4-1, 3.82) Toronto - Miguel Batista (3-4, 4.70)

(Sports Network) - Jose Lima will look to win his third straight decision tonight, when he leads the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Toronto Blue Jays in the middle test of their three-game set at SkyDome.

Lima, who has split time between the rotation and the bullpen for the Dodgers, is unbeaten (2-0) since April 22 -- a span of 11 outings. Last time on the hill, Lima surrendered just one hit over an inning of relief work against Arizona. The veteran hurler walked and struck out one in the contest. Over his last two starts, Lima has allowed no runs and nine hits through 13 2/3 innings of action.

Lima, a former Detroit Tiger, has struggled mightily in his career against the Blue Jays, posting a 0-4 mark with a 4.73 ERA.

Toronto will have righthander Miguel Batista, a former Arizona Diamondback, on the hill tonight. Batista is 3-1 over his last five starts, including a no- decision against Oakland last week. The 33-year-old allowed six hits and a run over eight innings, while fanning five and walking one in the contest.

Batista has tallied a 4-6 mark with a 3.34 ERA in 12 career contests against the Dodgers.

The Blue Jays registered a 7-1 win over the Dodgers in the series opener Tuesday evening. Toronto improved to 59-63 all-time in interleague action, as Howie Clark, who was re-called from Triple-A on May 28, led the way with a two-run homer and four RBI.

Reed Johnson finished with three hits in the win, while Vernon Wells tacked on a pair of hits. Chris Woodward, activated from the DL before the game, hit a two-run double.

The Blue Jays placed interleague specialist Carlos Delgado on the 15-day DL because of a strained right ribcage, making the move retroactive to May 30. Delgado has tallied an interleague-high 37 homers and 108 RBI.

Also sent to the DL was relief pitcher Valerio De Los Santos. Frank Catalanotto and RHP Justin Speier were activated from the DL.

Toronto starter Ted Lilly did a nice job, allowing just seven hits and a run over 7 1/3 innings. Lilly fanned seven and walked one in the winning effort. The southpaw has won five consecutive decisions and hasn't lost since April 21.

The Blue Jays improved to 15-14 at home this season, including wins in six of their last seven.

Los Angeles starter Hideo Nomo made an unceremonious return from the DL, giving up six hits and five runs over five innings. Nomo (3-6) walked and struck out three in the defeat. The veteran has lost four consecutive decisions and hasn't won since April 21.

Shawn Green finished 2-for-4 with a solo homer, while Juan Encarnacion added two hits in the loss. Los Angeles mustered eight total hits and left 18 men on base in the defeat.

Los Angeles, which is 2-2 so far on its nine-game road trip, owns a 15-13 record in foreign ballparks this season. The Dodgers are 60-51 all-time in interleague action.

Los Angeles took two of three meetings between these teams in 2002 at Dodger Stadium.

SAN DIEGO PADRES (31-26) AT BOSTON RED SOX (34-23), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Diego - Brian Lawrence (7-3, 4.06) Boston - Bronson Arroyo (2-3, 5.33)

(Sports Network) - Brian Lawrence targets his eighth win of the season this evening when the San Diego Padres play the middle contest of a three-game set against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Lawrence, whose career-high is 12 wins, has won five of his last six decisions and is 7-3 on the year to go along with a 4.06 earned run average. However, he is coming off a no-decision in his last outing, despite a solid effort a week ago against the Colorado Rockies.

In that contest the 28-year-old righty allowed a run on five hits over 7 1/3 innings and did not factor in the decision of his team's 2-1 win.

Lawrence lost his only start against the Red Sox, as he allowed four runs and 10 hits in 7 1/3 frames.

Boston will counter with righthander Bronson Arroyo, who has lost his last two starts and is coming off a horrendous outing in his last start back on June 1 against the Anaheim Angels. In that contest, the 27-year-old hurler was tagged for six runs - five earned - on eight hits over 5 2/3 frames, as he fell to 2-3 on the season, while raising his ERA to 5.33.

Arroyo is 1-1 lifetime against the Padres with a 7.56 ERA in two starts.

In the opener of the set on Tuesday, Pedro Martinez tossed eight strong scoreless innings to lead Boston to a 1-0 win. Martinez (6-3) yielded only two hits and one walk, while striking out eight as he continued to have success versus San Diego.

****** Damon drove in the only run of the game for the Red Sox, who have won three in a row after a four-game slide. Damon has five doubles and three RBI over his last four games.

Mark Loretta and Terrence Long each posted a hit for the Padres, who had won three of four.

The Red Sox scored the sole run of the game in the seventh on a two-run double by Damon. Gabe Kapler crossed the plate on the two-out hit after he reached on a two-base hit two batters earlier.

Antonio Osuna (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing one run on one hit in one inning of work.

Perennial All-Star shortstop Nomar Garciaparra played again with Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday, but the team insists that he is on the verge of returning.

After missing most of spring training and the first 56 games of the regular season, Garciaparra, who is sidelined with right Achilles' tendinitis, will be examined before tonight's contest and could make his 2004 debut tonight.

The 30-year-old Garciaparra has played six games in a rehab stint for Pawtucket, going 5-for-21.

Boston took two of three from the Padres in the only-ever series between these teams back in 2002 in San Diego.

San Diego, which will be playing the second leg of a six-game road trip tonight, is 15-14 away from home this season, while Boston is 19-9 at home.

The Red Sox are 57-65 all-time in interleague play with San Diego posting a 52-59 all-time mark against the AL.

COLORADO ROCKIES (21-36) AT NEW YORK YANKEES (36-20), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Colorado - Joe Kennedy (4-3, 3.63) NY Yankees - Kevin Brown (7-1, 3.89)

(Sports Network) - Kevin Brown takes aim at his third consecutive win this evening when the New York Yankees play the middle contest of their three-game set against the Colorado Rockies at Yankee Stadium.

Brown is off to a splendid 7-1 start in pinstripes to go along with a 3.89 earned run average, but is coming off a less than spectacular outing in his last trip to the hill. On Friday against the Texas Rangers, Brown allowed six runs - five earned - on seven hits over six frames, but was bailed out by his high-powered offense in a 7-6 win.

The 39-year-old righthander is 11-5 lifetime against the Rockies with a 2.90 ERA in 21 games, 20 of which have been starts.

Colorado will counter with lefthander Joe Kennedy, who has dropped his last three decisions and has not won since May 5. Kennedy, 4-3 on the year with a 3.63 ERA, is coming off a no-decision in his last outing on Friday against the San Francisco Giants, as he allowed two runs on two hits in just three innings.

Kennedy, 25, has faced the Yankees 10 times in his career - eight starts - and is 2-4 against them with a 5.29 ERA.

In the opener of the set on Tuesday, Javier Vazquez pitched into the eighth inning to win his fourth straight start and Jason Giambi knocked in two runs, as the Yankees won their 11th consecutive interleague game with a 2-1 victory.

New York has now won two in a row and 12 of its last 14 overall and maintained its 2 1/2 game lead over the Boston Red Sox in the American League East..

Mark Sweeney drove in the lone run for the Rockies, who have lost three in a row and five of their last six. Jeromy Burnitz extended his hitting streak to 12 games in the setback.

Vazquez (7-4) allowed just one run on five hits in seven-plus innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Tom Gordon pitched a scoreless eighth and Mariano Rivera worked the ninth for his 24th save.

Fassero (0-6) fell to 0-3 as a starter and has lost 10 straight decisions dating back to last year. The lefthander gave up just two runs on six hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings.

Not all the news was good for the Yankees, as Derek Jeter missed his third straight game with a sore groin. However, he is expected to be back in the lineup tonight.

On the milestone watch, Bernie Williams needs four hits to become the seventh Yankee to reach 2,000. Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Don Mattingly, and Yogi Berra are also on that list. He is also just two home runs away from tying Graig Nettles (250) for sixth place on the Yankees all-time list.

Alex Rodriguez drew a walk in the win and has now reached base safely in 45 consecutive games, extending the longest such streak of his career and the longest streak in the majors this season. The run is also longest by a Yankee since Jeter reached base safely in 57 straight games from September 24, 1998, through June 5, 1999.

During the streak, Rodriguez is 58-for-175 (.331) with 12 homers, 28 RBI and 27 walks. He is hitting .301 for the year.

The Yankees, who are in the midst of a 12-game home-stretch, are 19-8 in New York this season. The Rockies, meanwhile, will be playing the second leg of a six-game road trip tonight and are 8-20 away from home this season.

This is the second-ever series between New York and Colorado, as the two teams combined for 70 runs in a three-game matchup during the 2002 campaign, with the Yankees taking two of three.

The Yankees have prospered in interleague play, going 73-48 against National League opponents -- the second-best record in the majors. Only the Oakland A's (77-47) have a better record than New York.

Colorado, though, is just 41-57 against the AL and has lost 35 of 48 on the road in interleague action.

          FLORIDA MARLINS (33-25) AT CLEVELAND INDIANS (25-30), 7:05 P.M.

          Probable Starting Pitchers: Florida - A.J. Burnett (0-1, 4.50) Cleveland - Jake Westbrook (4-2, 3.32)

(Sports Network) - A.J. Burnett makes his second start since coming back from ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow as the Florida Marlins continue a three-game series tonight against the Cleveland Indians at Jacobs Field.

Burnett made his season debut last Thursday at Shea Stadium versus the New York Mets and allowed two runs on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts in four innings. The righthander suffered the loss in that game as the Marlins were beaten 4-1. His last major league victory came on August 18, 2002 versus San Francisco.

Burnett will face the Indians for the second time in his career. He faced them at Pro Player Stadium on June 20, 2002 and collected the win by throwing six shutout innings in a 3-0 Florida triumph.

Interleague play has been Burnett's specialty, as he has logged a 6-0 mark with a 2.77 ERA all-time against the American League.

Florida enters tonight's play alone in first place in the National League East -- three games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Last night, Miguel Cabrera and Damion Easley hit two-out home runs in the top of the ninth inning, as the Marlins rallied for a 7-5 victory. Alex Gonzalez finished 3-for-5 with a home run and Abraham Nunez also homered for Florida, which was coming off of a four-game split with the Mets at Shea Stadium. Easley drove in three runs and scored twice in the victory, as Florida improved its all-time interleague record to 71-47.

Victor Martinez delivered three hits, a run batted in and a run scored for the Indians, who saw their three-game winning streak halted. Cleveland rebounded from a series-opening loss and won the final three contests of its four-game set versus Anaheim over the weekend.

Omar Vizquel notched a pair of RBI for Cleveland, which dropped to 60-62 in all-time regular season action versus the National League.

The contest marked the Marlins' first trip to Jacobs Field since their run to the 1997 World Series title. That October, the Marlins, who at the time were in their fifth season of existence, downed the Indians in a Game 7 extra- inning thriller.

Jake Westbrook will toe the rubber tonight for the Indians. The righthander is 1-0 over his last two starts, but he is coming off a no-decision in his most recent outing last Wednesday against Texas when he allowed only two earned runs in seven innings. This marks his first career appearance against the Marlins.

The Marlins are 3-2 on their current 10-game road trip. They split a weekend series against the Mets and will conclude the swing in Detroit.

The Marlins and Indians have met only once before in the regular season with Florida sweeping a three-game series at home during the 2002 campaign, outscoring Cleveland, 9-1.

          ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (23-35) AT BALTIMORE ORIOLES (25-28), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Arizona - Brandon Webb (3-5, 4.35) Baltimore - Eric DuBose (4-4, 5.23)

(Sports Network) - Brandon Webb tries to win his second straight start and follow up a solid outing from Randy Johnson as the Arizona Diamondbacks resume a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles tonight at Camden Yards.

Johnson tossed seven strong innings to lead the Diamondbacks to an 8-1 win in the series opener. Johnson (8-4) gave up one run and scattered three hits to earn his fifth consecutive win in as many starts. He also struck out four and walked just one batter in lowering his earned run average to 2.75.

Shea Hillenbrand was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Chad Tracy drove in a pair for the Diamondbacks. Arizona has won five of its last seven games overall. Scott Hairston, Danny Bautista and Luis Gonzalez each stroked two hits in the winning effort. The Diamondbacks outhit Baltimore 14-5.

Jerry Hairston Jr., the older brother of Scott, went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Orioles, who have dropped five of their last six. Miguel Tejada had Baltimore's lone RBI.

Orioles starter Sidney Ponson (3-7) never got on track and got behind early in suffering the loss. Ponson went seven innings and yielded six runs -- five earned -- on 11 hits. The Baltimore hurler struck out five and walked just one batter, as he dropped his fourth straight start.

Webb had been 0-4 over a six-start span, but finally picked up a win in his most recent outing, Thursday against the Giants when he lasted six innings. This will be his first appearance against Baltimore.

Eric DuBose gets the ball tonight for the Orioles. The lefthander is coming off a loss last Wednesday versus the Yankees when he allowed six runs in five- plus innings. He has never faced Arizona.

The Diamondbacks were the most successful National League team against AL competition last year, going 11-4 in their 15 interleague efforts. The Diamondbacks are 48-44 all-time against the American League.

Baltimore is 51-71 all-time versus the National League. Last year the Orioles went 5-13 versus the NL.

Arizona met Baltimore once before, winning twice in a three-game set at Bank One Ballpark during the 2002 season.

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (30-28) AT TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS (21-34), 7:15 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Francisco - Jason Schmidt (7-2, 2.61) Tampa Bay - Mark Hendrickson (3-5, 5.03)

(Sports Network) - Jason Schmidt goes for his sixth straight victory tonight, as he heads to the mound for the red-hot San Francisco Giants in the middle test of three-game interleague series in Tampa Bay.

Schmidt has been excellent in his last five outings, posting a 5-0 record and 1.61 ERA. He has also won his last seven decisions over eight starts.

The 31-year-old righthander posted a victory last Friday in Colorado, tossing six solid innings. Schmidt surrendered two runs and five hits, while striking out nine and walking one.

Schmidt has one career start against the Devil Rays and tossed a shutout in that outing.

The Devil Rays will hand the ball to Mark Hendrickson tonight, as the lanky lefthander tries to win back-to-back starts for the first time this season. Hendrickson picked up a victory last Thursday in Minnesota, yielding two runs in 6 1/3 innings.

This will be Hendrickson's first-ever outing against the Giants.

In Tuesday's opener, Jerome Williams worked into the eighth inning and Michael Tucker smacked a two-run homer to lead San Francisco to a 7-3 win over Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field.

Williams (5-4) was charged with one run on four hits in seven-plus innings to improve to 2-3 in his last eight starts for the Giants, who have won three straight and 14 of their last 18 games. Tucker notched two hits and scored four runs.

Marquis Grissom and Todd Linden both chipped in with two hits for San Francisco, which scored twice in the first against Doug Waechter.

Toby Hall homered and Rey Sanchez added two hits for the Devil Rays, who finished with six hits and suffered their second straight loss after three consecutive victories. Aubrey Huff extended his hitting streak to 15 games in defeat.

The Giants have an impressive interleague record, going 62-49 all-time against the American League. However, the Devil Rays have a terrible history in interleague play with a 38-69 mark.

Giants slugger Barry Bonds is fourth all-time in interleague home runs with 32.

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (29-26) AT CHICAGO WHITE SOX (30-24), 8:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Philadelphia - Eric Milton (7-1, 3.78) Chicago - Jon Garland (5-2, 3.79)

(Sports Network) - Eric Milton aims for his eighth victory of the season tonight, when he takes the ball for the Philadelphia Phillies in the middle test of a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox.

Milton's seven victories this season places him in a tie for the third most in the National League.

The 28-year-old lefthander has won his last two starts, which have both come against the Atlanta Braves. Milton surrendered just one run and five hits in seven innings last Friday in Atlanta. The Phillies won that game, 9-1.

Milton is 4-4 with a 3.39 earned run average in 14 career games (13 starts) against the White Sox.

The White Sox will turn to Jon Garland this evening, as the righthander tries to win his fourth straight decision. He picked up a victory last Friday in Seattle, allowing two runs and four hits in 7 1/3 innings.

He had picked up a no decision in his previous start, but is 3-0 with a 3.49 ERA in his last four outings.

Garland has one career start against the Phillies and posted a no decision despite allowing just one run in six innings.

The White Sox won a wild one on Tuesday evening at U.S. Cellular Field. Juan Uribe and Paul Konerko each belted two home runs to lead Chicago over Philadelphia, 14-11, in the opener of the series.

Chicago finished with six home runs -- one shy of the team record set in 1955.

Uribe finished with three hits, three RBI and four runs scored for the White Sox, who won for just the second time in six games. Frank Thomas drove in four runs on three hits. Thomas and Carlos Lee also homered, as Lee extended his hit streak to 23 games.

Lee's streak is tied for the longest in the majors this season and is just four games shy of the franchise record of 27 games set by Luke Appling in 1936 and matched by Albert Belle in 1997.

Jim Thome posted his 33rd career multi-homer game and tied a career high with six RBI for the Phillies, who have dropped two straight after winning consecutive games.

Thome has been terrific in interleague play over his career. He is tied with Rafael Palmeiro for second place all-time in interleague home runs (36) and knotted with Sammy Sosa for second in runs batted in (93).

The Phillies activated closer Billy Wagner from the disabled list before the game, but he never pitched. He's been sidelined since early May with a strained left groin. Placido Polanco was also activated from the DL and started at second base. He finished 1-for-5 with a run scored.

This is the Phillie's first-ever trip to the Southside of Chicago. The only other meeting between these teams came in Philadelphia during the 2002 campaign. The White Sox won two of three in that series at Veterans Stadium.

Chicago is 67-55 all-time in interleague play, while the Phillies are 57-62.

          PITTSBURGH PIRATES (24-30) AT TEXAS RANGERS (31-24), 8:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Pittsburgh - Oliver Perez (3-3, 3.20) Texas - Joaquin Benoit (2-2, 5.77)

(Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Pirates try to snap a three-game losing streak tonight, when they battle the Texas Rangers in the middle test of a three-game interleague set at Ameriquest Field.

Tuesday's game was postponed due to rain and rescheduled for Thursday -- a scheduled off day for both teams. It was the seventh time the Pirates had a game postponed due to bad weather.

The Rangers picked up a victory in Monday's opener. Hank Blalock knocked in the winning run with an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Texas over Pittsburgh, 6-5.

Mark Teixeira belted a two-run homer for the Rangers, who moved seven games over .500 and within 1 1/2 games of Anaheim for the American League West division lead. Texas has won five of its last seven contests.

Craig Wilson posted a two-run homer for the Pirates, who have lost eight of their last nine outings.

The game was deadlocked at 5-5 heading into the bottom of the 10th. Laynce Nix got things started with a one-out single and the raced to third on a two-out base hit by Michael Young. With two strikes, Blalock blooped a single into center to plate Nix for the victory.

Francisco Cordero (2-0) earned the win in two scoreless frames for Texas.

Mike Johnston (0-3) suffered the loss after yielding one run on three hits in just two-thirds of an inning.

Oliver Perez tries to pick up his first victory in nearly a month, as he takes the ball for the Pirates tonight. His last win came via a complete game performance May 13 in Colorado.

However, the 22-year-old lefthander has been 0-2 in three starts since that victory. Perez surrendered three runs in seven innings last Thursday against St. Louis. He was handed the loss in the 4-2 setback.

This will be Perez's first-ever appearance against the Rangers.

Joaquin Benoit hopes to rebound from a tough outing his last time out, as he takes the mound for Texas for the first time in nearly two weeks.

Benoit's last start came on May 26 in a 4-0 loss against the White Sox. He surrendered four runs in just four innings of work.

Benoit has never faced the Pirates before.

The Pirates have an all-time interleague record of 42-56, while Texas is 57-66 against the National League. Pittsburgh went 5-7 in interleague play last season and the Rangers were a dismal 4-14.

This will be the second all-time series between Pittsburgh and Texas. The Rangers earned a three-game sweep over Pittsburgh from June 21-23, 2002.

MONTREAL EXPOS (18-38) AT KANSAS CITY ROYALS (21-34), 8:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Montreal - Zach Day (4-6, 3.52) Kansas City - Dennys Reyes (2-0, 3.19)

(Sports Network) - Veteran lefthander Dennys Reyes will shoot for his third consecutive win tonight, when he anchors the Kansas City Royals against the Montreal Expos in the second of a three-game interleague set at Kauffman Stadium.

Reyes, who has split time between the rotation and the bullpen this season, has won consecutive starts. The southpaw defeated Detroit last week, holding the Tigers to six hits and five runs over 6 2/3 innings of action. Reyes walked four and struck out one in the win. The 27-year-old hasn't lost a major league decision since September 18, 2002.

Reyes has tallied no record in 11 career outings against the Expos, allowing 16 hits and nine runs -- eight earned -- over 20 innings of action.

Taking the hill for Montreal tonight will be 25-year-old righthander Zach Day. Day has split his last four starts, including a win over Cincinnati last Friday. The Cincinnati native held his hometown team to four hits and two runs through six innings, while fanning five and walking three.

Day has appeared in one career game against the Royals, tossing one scoreless inning of relief.

The Royals got the best of the Expos in the opener, posting a 4-2 win. Zack Greinke tossed seven shutout innings to earn his first major league victory. Greinke (1-1) scattered three hits and struck out five without a walk on 96 pitches for the Royals. The rookie didn't allow more than one runner in an inning and permitted just one to reach second in his fourth big league start.

Carlos Beltran snapped an 0-for-10 slump with a two-run homer, while Joe Randa finished with two hits and scored twice for the Royals. Kansas City has won three of its last five games.

Ken Harvey, who has a 15-game hitting streak, sat out to rest his bruised forearm. Harvey, the American League's leading hitter (.375), is expected to return to the field tonight. Harvey is hitting .508 during the streak.

Endy Chavez finished with three hits for the Expos, who suffered their third straight loss and have dropped five of their last seven.

Tony Armas Jr. (0-1) absorbed the loss in his second outing since returning from shoulder surgery. He was charged with three runs on four hits in five innings.

Montreal has announced that Chad Cordero will take over the closing duties from Rocky Biddle. Cordero is 1-1 with a 2.18 earned run average in 27 games and opponents are hitting just .203 against him.

Neither of these teams has been terribly effective during interleague action over the years, as Montreal is 62-60 and Kansas City is just 52-70.

The Expos swept the only other series between these teams in 2002 at Olympic Stadium.

NEW YORK METS (28-29) AT MINNESOTA TWINS (31-26), 8:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: NY Mets - Steve Trachsel (5-4, 3.38) Minnesota - Johan Santana (2-4, 5.50)

(Sports Network) - Johan Santana tries to put the brakes on a four-game losing streak this evening when the Minnesota Twins play the middle contest of their three-game interleague set with the New York Mets at the Metrodome.

Santana, after winning his first two decisions of the season, has fallen on hard times of late and is 0-4 in his last four starts with an 8.07 earned run average. His latest setback came on Thursday, as the 25-year-old lefty allowed four runs and four hits over 7 2/3 frames. He also struck out seven and walked four, but fell to 2-4 on the season to go along with a 5.50 ERA.

Prior to his current slide, the Venezuelan hurler had not dropped a decision since July 23 of last season and was 10-0 over that stretch.

Santana won his only other start against the Mets with a sensational one run, three hit six inning effort.

New York will counter with veteran righthander Steve Trachsel, who is 5-4 on the year with a 3.38 ERA. He is coming off a loss in his last trip to the hill against the Florida Marlins on Friday, though, as he yielded four runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings in a 5-1 loss. He also walked four in the setback.

Trachsel has faced the Twins four time in his career and is 2-1 against them with a 4.28 ERA in four starts.

In the opener of the set on Tuesday, Michael Cuddyer's single in the ninth inning scored Jacque Jones, lifting Minnesota to a 2-1 win. Joe Mauer also drove in a run for the Twins, who have won two straight and have come from behind in 20 of their 31 wins this season, while improving to 12-5 in games decided in the last at-bat.

Juan Rincon (7-3) pitched two scoreless innings to record the win. Twins starter Brad Radke was solid, as he tossed seven innings of five-hit ball. He allowed one run and struck out seven with two walks.

Jones led off the ninth with a single off Mike Stanton (0-3). One-out later Mauer hit a routine double-play grounder to Kaz Matsui, who booted the ball to put runners at first and second.

Cuddyer, who pinch-hit for Luis Rivas, then hit a 3-2 pitch up the middle of the infield where Ty Wigginton made a great diving stab at the ball to prevent it from rolling into the outfield. Wigginton elected to go to first, but his throw pulled Jason Phillips off the bag. Jones, who never stopped running on the play, slid home safely as Phillips' throw to the plate bounced harmlessly off the mark.

Vance Wilson went 1-for-3 and provided the Mets their only offense with an RBI single, as New York fell for the third time in its last four games.

The Mets wasted a good pitching performance by Tom Glavine with no run support. Glavine allowed one run on five hits in eight innings of work for New York, which lost for the third time in its last eight games.

Mike Piazza, who has the highest batting average in the history of interleague play, finished 0-for-4, but is hitting .337 (29-for-86) over his last 23 games.

Since moving primarily to first base Piazza has steadily seen his average rise, jumping 24 points to .304 since the middle of May. He has also hit safely in 19 of his last 22 games.

The Mets, who are 62-57 all-time in interleague play, will be playing the second leg of a six-game trip on the road, where they are 13-16 this season. Minnesota, 61-60 all-time against the Senior Circuit, is in the midst of a 13- game homestand and is 18-12 at home this season.

The Mets took two of three from the Twins in the only other series between these teams back in the 2002 campaign.

          CINCINNATI REDS (34-24) AT OAKLAND ATHLETICS (33-24), 10:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Cincinnati - Jose Acevedo (3-4, 4.26) Oakland - Rich Harden (2-3, 3.67)

(Sports Network) - The red hot Oakland Athletics will attempt to continue their interleague dominance tonight, as they try to complete a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds at the Coliseum.

Oakland has won four straight and seven of its last eight, including a 10-6 win over the Reds Tuesday. With the victory, the Athletics improved to an all- time interleague-best 77-47 and moved to 14-0 against the NL Central.

Damian Miller tied a career high with five RBI to pace the A's to the win, while Scott Hatteberg continued his hot streak with three hits and two RBI. Hatteberg now has 13 RBI over his last four games. He also has a 10-game hitting streak.

Bobby Crosby added a homer, three runs scored and two RBI in the victory. Crosby is 5-for-7 in the first two games of the series.

Barry Zito (4-3) went the first five innings to earn the win for the Athletics, who have won seven of their last eight. Zito (4-3) improved to 2-0 in his last seven starts. He gave up five runs on eight hits in five innings.

Oakland has scored 35 runs in its last four games, including a 13-2 rout of the Reds in Monday's opener. The A's have pulled into a tie with Anaheim for first place in the AL West.

This marks the third of 12 straight games against NL Central squads for the Athletics, who will also play Pittsburgh, St. Louis and the Chicago Cubs during the run.

The Athletics will send 22-year-old righthander Rich Harden to the mound tonight. Harden doesn't have a decision over his last three starts, including a contest against Toronto last Friday. The hurler limited the Blue Jays to four hits and one run over seven frames, while fanning seven and walking three in the eventual 6-1 loss.

Harden has never faced the Reds in his career.

Taking the ball for the Reds tonight will be 26-year-old righthander Jose Acevedo. Acevedo has dropped four of his last five decisions, including a defeat to Montreal last Friday. The Dominican hurler was tagged for eight hits and four runs over seven innings, while fanning seven and walking two to the Expos.

Acevedo will be taking the mound against Oakland for the first time in his career.

Jung Bong (0-1) was recalled from the minors earlier in the day when Austin Kearns was placed on the disabled list with a sore right thumb. Bong was lit up for nine runs -- four earned -- on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Cincinnati's Ken Griffey Jr. entered the series needing just two home runs to join the 500-homer club, but he is still trying for his first of the set. He was 1-for-3 on Monday and finished 1-for-5 with a pair of strikeouts last night.

Barry Larkin hit a three-run homer for the Reds, who had won seven of nine before this series. Larkin, though, left the game with an abdominal injury in the fourth inning. The veteran will likely miss several games due to the injury.

D'Angelo Jimenez has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 contests, and reached base safely in 48 of his 58 games.

Cincinnati still owns a one-game lead over second place St. Louis in the NL Central.

The A's are 5-0 in interleague play against the Reds. The teams met in 2002 with Oakland sweeping a series in Cincinnati. This series marks Cincinnati's first trip to Oakland since the 1990 World Series, when the Reds swept the Athletics.

The Reds are 43-56 all-time in interleague play and have scored the fewest runs (430) of any team since regular season play began between the NL and AL. The Reds went 7-5 last year versus the American League.

The Reds are 16-14 on the road this season and have captured eight of their last 11 outside Great American Ball Park.

Oakland has won 12 of its last 13 home games and is 19-10 at the Coliseum this season.

          HOUSTON ASTROS (31-26) AT SEATTLE MARINERS (22-35), 10:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Houston - Wade Miller (5-6, 4.36) Seattle - Freddy Garcia (3-4, 3.18)

(Sports Network) - Wade Miller hopes to put the brakes on a three-game losing streak this evening when the Houston Astros play the middle contest of the finale of their three-game interleague affair against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.

Miller's latest setback came on Friday against the St. Louis Cardinals, as he allowed five runs and five hits in just 4 1/3 innings. He also fanned five and walked four, but fell to 5-6 on the season, while raising his earned run average to 4.36.

The 27-year-old righthander, who is 3-3 on the road this season, has never faced the Mariners.

Seattle will counter with 27-year-old righty Freddy Garcia, who had a two-game winning streak stopped in his last outing on Friday against the Chicago White Sox. In that contest the Venezuelan hurler yielded four runs and seven hits in 7 2/3 frames, as he slipped to 3-4 on the year and saw his ERA rise to 3.18.

This will be his first-ever appearance against the Astros.

On Tuesday, Roger Clemens became baseball's first nine-game winner with 6 2/3 shutout innings, leading Houston to a 1-0 victory in the middle contest of the series.

Clemens (9-0) allowed just three hits and struck out seven for the Astros, who have won two of their last three. Clemens recorded the 319th win of his career, which moved him past Phil Niekro for sole possession of 14th place on the all-time list.

Jeff Bagwell scored the game's only run while Houston's Jeff Kent extended his hitting streak to 23 games. Kent is currently tied with White Sox outfielder Carlos Lee for the longest active hitting streak in the majors.

Kent is hitting .365 (31-for-85) with eight doubles, three homers and 18 RBI during the streak and will match Tony Eusebio's 2000 team record with a hit tonight.

Joel Pineiro was the hard-luck loser last night, allowing just the one run on three hits through eight strong innings. Pineiro (1-8) also struck out four and walked three, but the lack of run support he received led to the loss.

Seattle, which has been shut out six times this season, had a three-game winning streak halted. Dan Wilson posted two hits in the loss, while Ichiro Suzuki had his 14-game hit streak stopped.

The Mariners are in the midst of a 12-game homestand and are 13-17 in Seattle this season. The Astros, meanwhile, are 16-13 away from home this season.

Houston is 58-48 all-time in interleague play, while the Mariners have posted a 65-59 mark against the Senior Circuit.

          MILWAUKEE BREWERS (28-27) AT ANAHEIM ANGELS (33-24), 10:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Milwaukee - Victor Santos (3-2, 4.17) Anaheim - Jarrod Washburn (7-2, 5.24)

(Sports Network) - It took 17 innings, but Milwaukee was able to pick up a 1-0 victory over Anaheim Tuesday night. The Brewers will try to build on the momentum from the narrow win this evening, when they continue a three-game interleague set with the Angels at Angel Stadium.

Scott Podsednik drove in a run with a double in the 17th inning to give the Brewers the win. With two outs in the 17th, Craig Counsell drew a walk and then scored from first on Podsednik's double off the wall in right.

Milwaukee's Geoff Jenkins tied a major league record by striking out six times. Meanwhile, Junior Spivey was charged with three errors.

Matt Kinney (3-3) struck out one in two shutout innings to post the win for Milwaukee. Danny Kolb retired the side in the 17th for his 16th save.

Starting pitcher Ben Sheets was nearly perfect in nine shutout innings for the Brewers, who snapped a two-game losing streak despite striking out a major league record-tying 26 times. Sheets permitted just one hit, retired the first 20 hitters he faced and pitched to just one over the minimum.

Milwaukee will have 27-year-old righthander Victor Santos on the mound tonight. Santos has split his last four starts, including a win over San Diego. The hurler limited the Padres to three hits and a run over five innings, while walking four and fanning three.

Santos has appeared in two career games against the Angels, tossing 9 1/3 scoreless innings. The hurler has walked six and struck four versus Anaheim.

Anaheim will counter with struggling lefty Jarrod Washburn on the mound. Washburn 0-1 over his last three starts, including a fortunate no-decision against Boston last Wednesday. The southpaw was tagged for nine hits and seven runs over 3 1/3 innings, while walking three and striking anyone out. Anaheim still survived with a 10-7 victory in the contest.

Washburn has made one other career start against the Brewers, giving up eight hits and two runs through six innings.

Starter Kelvim Escobar tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts in eight shutout innings for the Angels, who extended their scoreless streak to 32 innings without a run. Escobar scattered four hits and issued one walk.

Reliever Ramon Ortiz (2-5) took the loss after giving up the game-winning run. Scot Shields increased his consecutive scoreless streak to 21 innings for the Angels, who dropped to 64-59 all-time against the National League.

Anaheim registered just four hits in 55 at-bats -- one by Chone Figgins, Vladimir Guerrero, Casey Kotchman and Jose Molina.

Anaheim remains in first place in the AL West, but it is now tied with red hot Oakland. The Angels have dropped four consecutive games.

The Angels have not scored a run in 32 straight innings last tallying a run in the third frame against Cleveland on Sunday.

The Angels and Brewers last squared off at Miller Park in 2002, when Anaheim swept the series.

Anaheim is 18-11 at home this season, while Milwaukee is only 14-15 on the road.

St. Louis Cardinals (33-25) at Chicago Cubs (30-27), 2:20 p.m.

Probable Starting Pitchers: St. Louis - Matt Morris (5-5, 3.87) Chicago - Mark Prior (0-0, 0.00)

(Sports Network) - Mark Prior makes his second start of the season since being activated off the disabled list as the Chicago Cubs resume a four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals today from Wrigley Field.

Prior, who had been out all season due to an inflamed right Achilles' tendon, made his first start last Friday in the Windy City and limited the Pirates to a pair of hits in six dominating innings. The righthander didn't walk a batter and struck out six, but was left without a decision as Pittsburgh scored twice in the ninth inning for a 2-1 win.

Prior is 2-2 with a 2.04 ERA in five career starts against the Cardinals.

The Cubs have won three of their last four games, including a 7-3 triumph last night, evening this series. Derrek Lee drove in three runs and Matt Clement tossed eight solid innings. Clement (7-4) allowed three runs on five hits with nine strikeouts for the Cubs. Todd Hollandsworth posted two RBI and two runs scored in the victory while Aramis Ramirez scored twice and drove in a run for the Cubs.

Scott Rolen hit two home runs for the Cardinals, who lost for the just the second time in nine contests. Jim Edmonds also drove in a run in the losing effort.

Woody Williams (3-6) suffered the loss after permitting seven runs -- six earned -- on 12 hits through five innings of work. Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols missed his second straight game with a left hamstring strain.

Matt Morris will be on the hill this afternoon for the Cardinals. The righthander faces the Cubs for the third time this season and he has yet to beat them, going 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA. However, Morris has a career mark of 10-3 versus the Cubs.

Morris has given up a major league-leading 18 home runs this season. He allowed two in his most recent outing, Friday against Houston. Morris was able to win that game. Despite surrendering a season-high 10 hits, he allowed just three runs over 6 1/3 innings. That snapped a three-start winless (0-2) skid.

At 20-10, the Cardinals have the best road record in the majors. St. Louis has won five of its last six outside Busch Stadium.

Rolen leads the National League with a .406 (43-for-106) road average. He has hit safely in nine straight road games at a .529 (18-for-34) clip. He has three homers and five RBI in his last two games.

The Cardinals, who are 11-6 during their current 19-game stretch against NL Central opponents, again played without first baseman Albert Pujols. He is sidelined with a strained left hamstring, but there is a chance he could pinch-hit today.

Cubs second baseman Todd Walker is one hit shy of 1,000 for his career. He is in a 2-for-29 slump over his last eight games.

The Cubs lead the season series, 5-4. Most of the games have been tight with five of the contests being decided by a run. The Cubs have won nine of the last 14 encounters dating back to last season.
