NEW YORK METS (24-26) AT PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (27-22), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: New York - Al Leiter (1-2, 2.52) Philadelphia - Kevin Millwood (4-3, 4.90)

(Sports Network) - The New York Mets are hoping Al Leiter can provide their rotation with a big boost, as he will come off the 15-day disabled list to pitch tonight against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

The 38-year-old lefthander hasn't been in a game since May 11 due to tendinitis in his pitching shoulder. Leiter is 0-2 in his last five outings and his lone win this season came April 15 versus Atlanta. He holds an 8-5 mark with a 4.04 ERA in 21 lifetime starts against the Phillies.

The Mets began the three-game set with a long-awaited 5-3 victory yesterday. The game was twice delayed by rain for a total of 3 hours, 40 minutes, but New York snapped a four-game slide. Jason Phillips homered, Mike Cameron drove in two runs and Kaz Matsui had two hits and scored twice for New York. Phillips has homered three times in the last two games.

The Phillies managed just five hits yesterday. Pat Burrell homered and David Bell added a two-run single for Philadelphia, which has still won eight of its last 13 contests.

Kevin Millwood hopes to rebound from a tough stretch as he takes the mound tonight for the Phillies. The 29-year-old righthander is 0-1 over his last three starts and in that time he has allowed 22 hits and 15 earned runs over 15 innings. He was battered for six hits, six runs and a career-high six walks over four innings on Thursday in a loss to his former team, the Atlanta Braves.

Over his career, Millwood holds a 6-5 record with a 3.57 ERA in 19 games against the Mets. His last start versus New York resulted in a dominating victory on July 29 last year. In that game, he threw eight shutout innings, retiring 15 batters in a row between the first and seventh innings. Millwood retired 22 of the 24 batters he faced in that contest.

Orber Moreno tossed two innings in relief yesterday to get his first major league victory. Braden Looper retired the side in order in the ninth for his eighth save.

Brett Myers was saddled with the loss after pitching the first three innings, but he didn't come out following a 2 hour, 27 minute delay.

The Phillies have won eight of the last 10 meetings dating back to last season.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (27-23) AT PITTSBURGH PIRATES (23-24), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: St. Louis - Jeff Suppan (4-4, 3.83) Pittsburgh - Ryan Vogelsong (1-4, 7.47)

(Sports Network) - Jeff Suppan tries to beat his former team for the second time in less than a week as the St. Louis Cardinals resume a four-game series in Pittsburgh tonight.

Suppan went 10-7 in 21 games for the Pirates last season before being dealt to the Boston Red Sox on July 31, at the non-waiver trading deadline. He then inked a two-year, $6 million deal with the Cardinals in the offseason.

Tonight's pitching matchup is a repeat from last Thursday when Suppan earned the win over Ryan Vogelsong after allowing three runs and seven hits over six innings. Suppan is 3-0 in four road starts this season. The righthander is 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in six lifetime games against the Pirates.

The Cardinals won for the fourth time in five games yesterday with an 8-3 victory in the opener of the series. Scott Rolen went 3-for-4 and belted a three-run homer and Albert Pujols drove in two runs, while Tony Womack also hit a home run in St. Louis' 13-hit attack.

Rolen leads the majors with 53 RBI and also has an eight-game hitting streak. He is also one run shy of 700 for his career.

Craig Wilson equaled a career-high in hits by going 4-for-4. That included a two-run homer in the first inning, but the Pirates lost their second in a row. Jason Bay had two hits, including an RBI triple.

Vogelsong won his first start of the season, holding Philadelphia to one run over seven innings on April 8. He hasn't won since, going 0-4 in his last eight starts. This will be his second career outing against St. Louis.

Cardinals skipper Tony La Russa is four wins shy of tying Walter Alston (2,040) for sixth all-time in managerial victories.

Pirates catcher Jason Kendall has a 17-game hitting streak -- his longest since hitting safely in 23 straight games last year from June 24 through July 21.

The Cardinals have won nine of the last 13 meetings dating back to last season.

          CINCINNATI REDS (30-21) AT FLORIDA MARLINS (30-22), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Cincinnati - Aaron Harang (4-2, 5.27) Florida - Brad Penny (6-2, 2.12)

(Sports Network) - For the second time in a week, Cincinnati's Aaron Harang will battle Florida's Brad Penny, as the squads tangle in the second contest of a three-game set at Pro Player Stadium.

Penny outdueled Harang last week, giving up only six hits and two runs over eight innings. The 26-year-old struck out five and walked one in his third straight win and sixth victory in seven decisions. Penny hasn't allowed more than two runs in any of his last five outings. The Broken Arrow, OK native is third in the NL in ERA (2.12).

Penny has gone to the hill five times in his career against Cincinnati, tallying a 2-2 record with a 3.86 ERA. The hurler has surrendered 23 hits and 14 runs through 32 2/3 innings versus the Reds.

Harang has split his last four decisions, including last week's defeat to Florida. The 26-year-old was roughed up for nine hits and five runs over 4 1/3 innings, while walking and fanning two last week. Harang will be making just his second start of his career against Florida.

The Reds got the best of the Marlins in the series opener Monday, tallying a 9-7 win. Ken Griffey Jr. belted a three-run homer in the seventh to help lift the Reds.

The homer for Griffey was the 494th of his career, moving him ahead of Lou Gehrig for 20th all-time and putting him within six of baseball's prestigious 500 home run club. Eddie Murray is 19th on the all-time home run list with 504.

Sean Casey homered twice and finished with four RBI and three runs scored for the Reds, who now have 10 wins in their last 13 games. Barry Larkin went 3- for-5 with a solo shot and two runs scored as Cincinnati posted a season-high five home runs, tying the most ever allowed by Florida in Pro Player Stadium.

Reds third baseman Juan Castro left the game in the third inning with strained rib cage. Wily Mo Pena belted a solo shot in the fourth to get the Reds within a run.

John Riedling (4-0) picked up the win with an inning of relief, but it was Todd Jones who got the Reds out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the seventh. Danny Graves threw a perfect ninth for his 24th save.

Reds starter Todd Van Poppel gave up five runs on 10 hits in the no-decision.

With the win, the Reds increased their lead in the NL Central to 2 1/2 games over Chicago, Houston and St. Louis. Meanwhile, Florida sits atop the NL East by two games over Philadelphia.

Florida reliever Justin Wayne (3-2) suffered the loss after giving up Griffey's home run.

Mike Lowell drove in three runs for the Marlins, who saw their five-game win streak come to an end. Jeff Conine was 4-for-4 with an RBI while Luis Castillo added three hits with a pair of runs scored.

Marlins first baseman Hee Seop Choi has reached base in a career-high 17 straight games.

This is the second and final series between these teams this season. Florida won two of three contests in Cincy last week. Over the last two campaigns, the Marlins are 6-4 against the Reds.

Florida is 16-10 at home this season, while the Reds are 14-12 in foreign ballparks.

          MONTREAL EXPOS (16-34) AT ATLANTA BRAVES (25-25), 7:35 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Montreal - Tony Armas Jr.(0-0, 0.00) Atlanta - Jaret Wright (3-5, 3.81)

(Sports Network) - After a year of waiting, Montreal righthander Tony Armas Jr. finally get his opportunity to pitch in the majors as he takes the mound tonight for the Expos in the middle contest of a three-game series versus the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field.

Armas pitched in only five games last year and hasn't been in a big league game since May 23, 2003. He was forced to undergo surgery to repair tears in his right labrum and rotator cuff. Armas was sidelined this spring due to a strained muscle in his right side. The 26-year-old, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Sunday, isn't expected to pitch more than six innings in tonight's game. He made five rehab starts in May and the longest outing was 5 1/3 innings.

Armas holds a 4-6 mark with a 3.08 ERA in 14 career games versus the Braves.

Atlanta won 8-2 yesterday, posting its fourth victory in its last six contests. Nick Green, filling in for the injured Marcus Giles at second base, belted his first career major league homer, a three-run shot to highlight a six-run seventh inning. ****** Estrada and Andruw Jones each drove in two runs, while J.D. Drew homered for the Braves.

Russ Ortiz threw seven innings to get the victory, while Livan Hernandez was tagged with the defeat.

Nick Johnson had two hits and Brian Schneider belted a two-run homer for Montreal, which has dropped nine of its last 11 contests. The Expos, who began a 12-game road trip, dropped to 7-17 in away games this season.

Jaret Wright will be on the hill this evening for Atlanta, which will try to get above the .500 mark for the first time since being 13-12 following a May 4 win versus San Diego. The righthander snapped a four-start losing streak last Thursday at Philadelphia when he gave up just six hits and a run over 7 1/3 innings. He is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in four career relief appearances against the Expos.

Atlanta has won three of the four meetings so far this season and is 8-2 versus Montreal dating back to last year.

          HOUSTON ASTROS (27-23) AT CHICAGO CUBS (27-23), 8:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Houston - Brandon Duckworth (1-0, 6.23) Chicago - Glendon Rusch (2-0, 3.42)

(Sports Network) - With Andy Pettitte on the disabled list for the second time this season, the Houston Astros will look to Brandon Duckworth to take the hill in the second of a three-game set against the arch-rival Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field tonight.

Pettitte was placed on the DL Monday due to tightness in his left forearm. The lefthander was forced to leave his last start after four innings Wednesday because of the injury. His trip to the DL is retroactive to May 26, but it's unknown when he'll return to the roster this time.

Duckworth, who came over from Philadelphia in the Billy Wagner deal during the offseason, is left to pick up the pieces. The 28-year-old spot starter has been a disappointment for the Astros, allowing 25 hits and 15 earned runs over 21 2/3 innings of action this season. Duckworth has made just two starts in 11 appearances this season, going 1-0. His last start came on April 23 against Colorado.

Duckworth has been good in two career outings against the Cubs, posting no record with a slim 1.50 ERA. The hurler has allowed only six hits and two earned runs over 12 innings of action.

Chicago will have lefthander Glendon Rusch on the mound this evening. Rusch has been forced into the rotation because of injuries to Mark Prior and Kerry Wood. The southpaw has been quite good as of late, possibly earning himself a slot in the rotation and forcing Sergio Mitre out when Prior comes back Friday.

Prior will come off the 60-day disabled list on Friday to pitch against the Pirates at Wrigley Field. Prior has been sidelined since the beginning of the season due to an inflamed right Achilles' tendon.

Last time on the mound, Rusch allowed six hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings of action against Pittsburgh in a no-decision. Rusch hasn't given up more two earned runs in any of his last three starts. The lefty has struck out 15 and walked five in the successful string of efforts. He is 2-5 lifetime against Houston.

Chicago gained the upperhand in this series Monday, posting a 3-1 victory. Moises Alou belted a two-run homer and finished with three hits to pace the Cubs to the win.

Greg Maddux (4-4) tossed 6 2/3 strong innings to earn his 293rd career win for the Cubs, who won their second straight on the heels of a season-long, five- game skid. Maddux only yielded one run on seven hits and two walks, while striking out three.

Joe Borowski allowed two hits in the ninth, but settled down to post his ninth save of the season.

Lance Berkman hit a solo homer for the Astros, who fell to 3-8 in their last 11 contests. It was the slugger's 14th home run of the season and the 140th of his career. Berkman also has nine homers in his last 12 games.

Roy Oswalt (3-4) suffered the defeat after allowing three runs and 10 hits in six frames.

Jeff Kent extended his career-high hitting streak to 16 games with a base hit in his first at-bat Monday. Kent's previous high was 13 games, accomplished three times.

Houston won both of the meetings between these teams at Minute Maid Park last week. Chicago owns a slight 9-8 advantage in this series since the start of last season.

Houston is 13-10 on the road this year, while Chicago owns a 14-9 record at Wrigley.

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (26-24) AT ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (18-33), 9:35 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Francisco - Dustin Hermanson (1-2, 3.99) Arizona - Steve Sparks (2-4, 6.71)

(Sports Network) - Nearly two weeks ago, the San Francisco Giants were facing a monumental deficit in the National League West, but today they are knocking on the door for first place in the division.

The Giants were 16-24 following a loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field on May 19, but they have since reeled off 10 straight victories and enter tonight's action 1 1/2 games behind San Diego and Los Angeles for first place in the division.

This is San Francisco's longest winning streak since an 11-game binge May 29 - June 9, 1998.

Tonight, the Giants resume a four-game series versus the Arizona Diamondbacks at Bank One Ballpark. San Francisco has dominated the D'Backs this season, winning all four meetings. The Giants have also won eight of their last 10 at Bank One Ballpark dating back to last season.

This evening's pitching matchup is a repeat from last Thursday when San Francisco righthander Dustin Hermanson faced knuckleballer Steve Sparks. Neither pitcher received a decision in that contest, won 5-4 by the Giants in 10 innings.

Hermanson is 0-2 in his last five starts and has no-decisions in each of the previous three outings. Hermanson was in line for Thursday's win, but the Diamondbacks tied the game in the ninth inning. He allowed three runs -- two earned -- over 5 2/3 innings. His only victory this year came on April 13 versus Milwaukee.

Hermanson owns a 5-1 record over 10 lifetime outings (8 starts) against the Diamondbacks. He has won all three of his starts in Arizona.

Sparks is 0-3 in his previous four outings. He lasted five innings in Thursday's start, allowing six hits and four runs. In his last two appearances, Sparks has given up 15 hits and 14 earned runs over 7 2/3 innings. He is 0-4 in his last four starts, posting a 10.35 ERA during the skid. He is 0-1 with a 4.58 ERA in four career outings (2 starts) against the Giants.

Last night, Barry Bonds belted his 14th home run of the season and 672nd of his career as the Giants won 8-4. Michael Tucker also homered and finished 4- for-5 for the Giants, who began a 14-game road trip, their longest in 15 years, during which they will have no days off. Edgardo Alfonzo added a late- two run double to put the game out of reach.

Kirk Rueter did just enough to earn his second win, allowing two runs on seven hits in five-plus innings. San Francisco used four relievers the rest of the way.

Shea Hillenbrand went 2-for-4 with an RBI double for the Diamondbacks, who made three crucial errors on the way to their seventh loss in eight games. Scott Hairston smashed a two-run homer in the ninth with the outcome already in hand.

Arizona starter Casey Daigle was saddled with the loss after permitting four runs -- three earned -- on five hits and a pair of walks in 4 2/3 innings of work.

The Diamondbacks outhit San Francisco, 11-9, but still fell to 4-15 in their last 19 contests. Arizona has also lost a franchise-record six in a row at home.

COLORADO ROCKIES (19-31) AT SAN DIEGO PADRES (28-23), 10:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Colorado - Aaron Cook (0-0, 5.19) San Diego - Justin Germano (1-0, 3.27)

(Sports Network) - The Colorado Rockies will try to string together back-to- back wins for the first time since mid-May tonight, when they battle the San Diego Padres at PETCO Park.

A win this evening would give Colorado its first road series triumph of 2004. The Rockies have dropped all eight of their road sets this year.

Colorado posted a dominating 7-1 win over the Padres Monday night. Mark Sweeney went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Royce Clayton and Charles Johnson added two hits apiece. Jeromy Burnitz posted a pair of RBI and walked twice in the game for Colorado, which snapped a four-game losing streak and won for just the second time in 12 games.

Jason Jennings (4-5) picked up the win in eight strong innings, yielding just one run on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts. He threw just 92 pitches and looked strong enough for his first complete game of the season, but was relieved in the ninth by Brian Fuentes.

Colorado finished May with a 10-19 record, its second-worst mark for that month in its 12-season history. The 1993 inaugural club went 7-22 in May.

San Diego starter Adam Eaton (1-6) took the loss to remain winless in his last nine starts (0-6). He surrendered four runs on seven hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings, fanning seven.

San Diego reliever Antonio Osuna was activated from the 15-day disabled list and pitched one scoreless inning. The Padres optioned pitcher Brian Sweeney to Triple-A Portland.

Brian Giles had two hits and drove in the only San Diego run with a triple in the fourth inning. The Padres were coming off a successful four-city, 12-game road trip (7-5).

Sean Burroughs recorded a single in the losing effort, as he extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Burroughs is hitting .346 (18-for-52) since May 19 with one home run, four RBI and seven runs scored.

The Padres have been victorious in 10 series this season. Last year, they didn't win post their 10th series victory August 10.

San Diego will pin its hopes on rookie righthander Justin Germano this evening. Germano has made a pair of starts since being called up from Triple-A Portland, allowing just eight hits and four runs over 11 innings of action. Last time on the mound, Germano surrendered only three hits and two unearned runs over six innings against the Rockies in a no-decision. He walked five and struck out three in the contest.

Germano is facing the Rockies for the second time in his young career.

Heading to the mound for Colorado tonight will be 25-year-old righthander Aaron Cook. Cook went head-to-head with Germano last week, as he allowed nine hits and a run over 6 1/3 innings in a no-decision. The hurler struck out two and walked one in the contest.

Cook has made six career starts against the Padres, going 2-2 with a 3.92 ERA.

The Rockies took two of three from the Padres earlier in the season and are 26-16 against them since the start of the 2002 campaign. However, they are just 10-10 in San Diego in that time.

San Diego is 13-10 at home this season, while the Rockies have posted a 7-18 mark outside Coors Field.

MILWAUKEE BREWERS (25-24) AT LOS ANGELES DODGERS (27-22), 10:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Milwaukee - Ben Sheets (5-3, 2.71) Los Angeles - Jeff Weaver (3-6, 4.3

(Sports Network) - Red hot righthander Ben Sheets heads to the hill for Milwaukee tonight, as the Brewers take on Jeff Weaver and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the middle test of a three-game set at Dodger Stadium.

Sheets has won just two of his last three starts, while surrendering no more than two earned runs in any of his past four efforts. The former Olympian limited the Dodgers to only four hits and a run over seven frames of a win last week. Sheets fanned eight and didn't permit a walk in the contest. The righthander has struck out 29 and walked only three in his last three starts.

Sheets is second in the NL in strikeouts with 77, while sitting third in WHIP (0.95).

Sheets has gone to the hill six times in his career versus the Dodgers, posting a 2-3 record with a 3.19 ERA. The hurler has allowed 33 hits and 15 earned runs over 42 1/3 innings of action against Los Angeles.

Los Angeles will have 27-year-old righthander Weaver on the hill tonight. Despite being tied for the NL lead in losses (six), Weaver has been decent with a 4.38 ERA. The hurler has lost five of his last seven starts, as the Dodgers have provided him with just 2.6 runs per contest.

Last time on the hill, Weaver gave up three hits and two runs -- none earned -- over seven innings against Milwaukee. The Northridge, CA native struck out eight and walked four in the losing effort versus Sheets. For his career, Weaver is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA versus the Brewers.

The Dodgers grabbed the edge in this set on Monday, recording a 3-2 win in 10 innings. Cesar Izturis' RBI single scored Jose Hernandez in the 10th inning to lift Los Angeles to the win. Izturis ended 2-for-5 in the winning effort.

Juan Encarnacion and Jason Grabowksi each had an RBI in the ninth inning for the Dodgers to force extra innings.

Eric Gagne (2-0) worked a scoreless 10th inning to record the win for Los Angeles, which rallied from two runs down in the ninth to win its third straight game.

Los Angeles starter Odalis Perez allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings and fanned six on the day.

Los Angeles, which is playing the fifth leg of a six-game homestand tonight, is 14-11 at Chavez Ravine this season.

Milwaukee reliever Dave Burba (3-1) took the loss after allowing the game- winning run in the 10th.

Milwaukee wasted a solid performance by Matt Wise, who tossed five innings of three-hit ball and is still in search of his first win of the 2004 campaign. He struck out two for the Brewers, who have dropped three of four.

Geoff Jenkins smacked a solo homer and went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Bill Hall added a sac fly in the setback. Hall had a tough day at the plate overall, though, as he struck out four times.

The Brewers are in the midst of a nine-game road trip and are 11-12 outside Miller Park this season.

Milwaukee took two of three earlier in the year from the Dodgers, but have dropped 16 of the last 22 matchups in the series dating back to the 2001 campaign. The Brewers have also dropped eight of their last 10 in LA.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES (24-23) AT NEW YORK YANKEES (30-19), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Baltimore - Sidney Ponson (3-5, 6.09) New York - Mike Mussina (5-4, 5.00)

(Sports Network) - Mike Mussina tries to win his fifth consecutive decision this evening when the New York Yankees start a three-game set with the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium

After a 1-4 start, Mussina has won his last four decisions, but did not receive one in his last trip to the hill on Wednesday against the Orioles. In that contest, a 12-9 win for the Yanks, the 35-year-old righthander allowed five runs and six hits over 5 1/3 innings and saw his earned run average rise to 5.00.

Mussina, who spent the first 10 years of his career with the Orioles, is 6-3 against his former team with a 3.94 ERA in 12 starts.

Baltimore will counter with ace Sidney Ponson, who is just 1-5 over his last seven starts and is coming off a horrendous outing against the Yankees on Thursday. The 27-year old righthander was pounded for eight runs and 10 hits over 4 2/3 innings in that contest, as he fell to 3-5 on the season, while raising his ERA to 6.09.

Ponson is 3-9 lifetime against the Yankees with a 5.04 ERA in 20 games, 19 of which have been starts.

New York was denied a sweep in its three-game series with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Sunday, as it dropped the finale of the set 7-6, at Tropicana Field. Hideki Matsui had three hits, scored once and drove in a run, while Tony Clark collected a pair of hits with a run scored and three RBI, but the Yankees still suffered their first loss in seven games.

Jon Lieber (4-2) was knocked around in his bid to win his fourth straight game, allowing six runs on 11 hits and a walk over five-plus innings, fanning just one.

The loss closed out a successful 12-game road trip that saw New York go 8-4. The Yankees now start a 12-game home-stretch and are 13-7 in New York this season.

Baltimore, meanwhile, won its fourth consecutive game on Monday, as B.J. Surhoff homered and went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored to lead the Orioles to a 13-4 win over Boston at Fenway Park.

Melvin Mora drove in four runs and extended his hitting streak to 13 games, while Brian Roberts added three RBI and Jerry Hairston Jr. chipped in two in the winning effort.

Baltimore starter Rodrigo Lopez (4-2) earned the win by going 5 1/3 innings and allowing one run on four hits while striking out seven.

The Orioles will be playing the fifth leg of a seven-game road trip tonight and are 12-10 away from home this season.

On the milestone watch Yankee centerfielder Bernie Williams needs 10 hits to become the seventh Yankee to reach 2,000. Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Don Mattingly, and Yogi Berra are also on that list.

The Yankees swept a three-game set from the Orioles last week and have won the last five matchups in the series. Since the start of the 2001 campaign, New York is 42-17 against Baltimore with an 18-10 mark in the Bronx.

KANSAS CITY ROYALS (17-31) AT DETROIT TIGERS (23-27), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Kansas City - Chris George (0-0, 0.00) Detroit - Nate Robertson (4-3, 4.47)

(Sports Network) - Nate Robertson takes aim at his third consecutive win this evening when the Detroit Tigers continue their four-game series with the Kansas City Royals at Comerica Park.

Robertson, who started the year in the bullpen, has posted a 4-3 mark with a 4.47 earned run average and a save in 11 games, nine starts. Over his last two outings, spanning 12 innings, Robertson has allowed just two runs and nine hits.

On Thursday against the Royals, the 26-year-old lefthander surrendered two runs on three hits over five frames to earn the win, which raised his lifetime mark to 1-1 against Kansas City to go along with a 9.82 ERA in two starts.

Countering for Kansas City will be 24-year-old southpaw Chris George, who will be making his first start of the year for the Royals. Last season while with Kansas City, George was 9-7 with a 7.11 ERA. In his three years in a Royals uniform, George has posted a 13-18 mark with a 6.32 ERA

He was 1-3 with a 2.32 ERA at Triple-A Omaha in eight games this year.

George has faced the Tigers seven times in his career and is 1-4 against them with a 4.36 ERA.

In the opener of the set on Monday, Eric Munson and Carlos Guillen each hit two homers to lead Detroit to an 8-4 win. Munson ended 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, as the Tigers belted five homers on the day. It was the first time that the team accomplished that feat at Comerica Park.

Guillen, who finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, had a traditional solo home run and then hit an inside-the-park homer to help the Tigers halt a three-game losing streak. Omar Infante also added a solo homer in the win.

Gary Knotts (2-1) allowed three runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings to record the win. He struck out five with two walks.

Dmitri Young, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list prior to the contest, finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Young had been out since April 6 with a non-displaced fracture of his right fibula.

Ken Harvey hit a solo homer and ended 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Royals, who have dropped two straight.

Darrell May (2-7) garnered the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits. He walked two and gave up two homers in the setback. Matt Stairs and Tony Graffanino each had an RBI for KC.

The Royals won two of three from Detroit last week and are 16-7 against the Tigers since the start of last season.

            TEXAS RANGERS (27-22) AT CLEVELAND INDIANS (22-26), 7:05 P.M.

            Probable Starting Pitchers: Texas - Ryan Drese (2-2, 3.86) Cleveland - C.C. Sabathia (2-3, 2.89)

(Sports Network) - The Cleveland Indians target their fifth consecutive victory this evening when they begin a brief two-game series with the Texas Rangers at Jacobs Field.

Cleveland's hopes tonight will rest on the left arm of C.C. Sabathia, who has dominated the Rangers over the course of his four-year career, but is coming off a pitiful outing in his last start on Wednesday against the Seattle Mariners.

In that contest the 23-year-old hurler was pounded for six runs and 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings, as he fell to 2-3 on the season. He also walked a batter and struck out five and saw his earned run average rise to 2.89.

Sabathia has faced the Rangers five times and is a perfect 5-0 against them with a 2.48 ERA.

Texas will counter with righthander Ryan Drese, who is also trying to recover from a horrendous outing in his last start. On Thursday against the Chicago White Sox, the 28-year-old absorbed the loss, as he yielded seven runs and eight hits over 4 1/3 frames and slipped to 2-2 on the year, while raising his ERA to 3.86.

Drese, who is 0-2 in four road starts this season, has never faced the Indians, the team he broke into the majors with in 2001.

Cleveland rallied for a 4-3 win over the Oakland Athletics Sunday to complete a three-game sweep. The Indians have now won four straight and can match their season-high winning streak set from May 12-17 with a victory tonight.

Rick White (2-0) picked up the win after coming on in the ninth in relief of newly-anointed Indians closer Jose Jimenez, who blew his second save of the season with two runs against without retiring a batter. The blown save was also the 12th of the year for Cleveland, whose current tear comes on the heels of a season-long seven-game skid.

Travis Hafner was 6-for-7 in the series with four RBI for the Tribe, who is 16-1 at home this season.

Texas, meanwhile, stopped a four-game losing streak on Sunday, as Kenny Rogers became the league's first eight-game winner in a 4-2 win over Toronto in the finale of a three-game set at SkyDome.

Rogers (8-2), who has won his last four starts, surrendered just one unearned run in this one. In 5 1/3 innings, Rogers yielded six hits and seven walks while striking out two. Francisco Cordero tossed a perfect ninth to pick up his 16th save in as many opportunities for the Rangers.

Brad Fullmer homered in the win, as Texas improved to just 2-4 on its current 11-game road trip and is 11-13 away from home this season.

Texas took five of its nine matchups with the Indians last season and is 10-8 against them since the start of the 2002 season.

TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS (18-31) AT MINNESOTA TWINS (27-23), 8:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Tampa Bay - Paul Abbott (2-4, 6.07) Minnesota - Carlos Silva (5-3, 4.55)

(Sports Network) - Carlos Silva tries to get back on the winning track this afternoon when the Minnesota Twins play the second portion of their four-game set with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at the Metrodome.

Silva was one of the league's biggest early-season surprises, as he came out of the gates winning his first five decisions. However, he has stumbled of late and has lost his last three starts, including Thursday's 5-4 setback at the hands of the Devil Rays, in his first-ever start against the club.

In that contest, Silva gave up five runs - four earned - on 11 hits over six innings to fall to 5-3 on the season and raised his earned run average to 4.55.

Tampa will counter with a struggling righthander of its own tonight in veteran Paul Abbott, who has lost his last three decisions. Abbott, who is 2-4 with a 6.07 ERA on the season, was removed from the Devil Rays rotation after a brutal five game stretch that saw him go 0-3 with a 9.97 ERA.

So, manager Lou Piniella moved him to the pen, where he pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings against the New York Yankees on Friday.

Abbott has faced the Twins 12 times in his career, seven of which have been starts, and is 4-2 against them with a 5.94 ERA.

In the opener of the set on Monday, Fred McGriff belted a two-run homer to lead Tampa Bay to a 7-3 win. Tino Martinez added a solo shot for the Devil Rays, who won for the eighth time in 11 games.

Henry Blanco homered for the Twins, who fell for the fourth time in five outings and for the eighth time in their last 11 contests.

Rob Bell (1-2) earned his first win of the season in seven strong innings. Bell yielded just two runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out four.

Seth Greisinger (2-4) suffered the loss in his fourth career start versus the Devil Rays. Greisinger was tagged for five runs on five hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings.

Tampa Bay have won three of four meetings with the Twins this season, but Minnesota is 12-3 in the last 15 matchups against the Devil Rays. Yesterday's win snapped an eight-game losing streak at the Metrodome for Tampa Bay that dated back to August 19, 2001.

The Devil Rays, who stopped an eight-game road losing streak on Monday, are 4-17 away from home this season, while the Twins have posted a 14-9 mark in the Twin Cities.

BOSTON RED SOX (31-20) AT ANAHEIM ANGELS (30-20), 10:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Boston - Bronson Arroyo (2-2, 5.00) Anaheim - Bartolo Colon (4-3, 5.19)

(Sports Network) - Bartolo Colon tries to pick up his first win in nearly a month when he takes the ball for Anaheim in the opener of a two-game series against the Boston Red Sox at Angel Stadium.

Colon picked up his last win on May 8 against Tampa Bay, but has been struggling since then. He is 0-1 with an inflated 8.09 earned run average in his last three starts.

The 31-year-old righthander has 17 career starts against the Red Sox and has compiled a 5-8 record and 3.87 ERA in those outings. He does have three complete games against Boston in his career.

The Red Sox hand the ball to Bronson Arroyo this evening and hope the righthander can rebound from a brutal outing last week against Oakland.

Arroyo was hammered for nine runs -- six earned -- in just 3 1/3 innings of work. He also allowed seven hits in the 15-2 setback to the Athletics.

This will be Arroyo's first career appearance against the Angels.

Anaheim suffered an 11-2 loss at the hands of the Chicago White Sox Sunday.

John Lackey (3-6) was shelled for eight runs on nine hits and two walks over just three innings. He struck out one and saw his ERA balloon from 4.98 to 5.95 in his third straight loss.

Vladimir Guerrero homered and Jose Guillen had a pair of hits with an RBI, as the Angels lost for the fifth time in six games. The Angels have still taken 16 of the last 28 meetings with the White Sox.

Raul Mondesi joined the Angels for the first time Sunday, and started at designated hitter. Mondesi, who recently left Pittsburgh because of personal issues, could play centerfield tonight.

Boston was defeated Monday by Baltimore in a make-up game at Fenway Park. The contest was originally scheduled for April 13, but was postponed due to rain.

B.J. Surhoff homered and went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored to lead the Orioles to a 13-4 win.

Kevin Millar homered and drove in two runs for the Red Sox, who have lost two of their last three.

Red Sox starter Derek Lowe (4-5) was saddled with the loss after yielding seven runs on eight hits in six innings of work. Lowe left the game with a blister and is listed as day-to-day.

The Angels, who are 15-7 in Anaheim this season, begin a 12-game homestand today. Meanwhile, the Red Sox are 13-11 as the visitors this year.

Boston took six of nine meetings with the Angels last season and is 10-6 against them since the start of the 2002 campaign.

CHICAGO WHITE SOX (29-20) AT OAKLAND ATHLETICS (26-23), 10:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago - Esteban Loaiza (6-3, 3.69) Oakland - Mark Redman (3-3, 4.04)

(Sports Network) - The Oakland Athletics hope to get back on the winning track tonight, as they host the opener of a two-game series against the Chicago White Sox at the Coliseum.

The Athletics were swept in a three-game series by the Cleveland Indians this weekend at Jacobs Field.

The Athletics were dealt a 4-3 loss by the Indians in Sunday's finale. Omar Vizquel tied the game with a double in the bottom of the ninth and Matt Lawton scored the winning run on a wild pitch by Arthur Rhodes later in the frame.

The Athletics led 25 of the 27 innings in the series, but were unable to pick up a win. They have now dropped three in a row and five of their last six.

Rhodes (1-3) suffered the loss after blowing his fourth save of the year. He allowed the two runs in the ninth on two hits and two walks.

The White Sox took two of three games from Anaheim this weekend at U.S. Cellular Field and capped the series with a blowout win on Sunday.

Jose Valentin homered, scored three times and drove in three, as the White Sox hammered the Angels, 11-2.

Willie Harris tied a career-high with four hits and scored twice, while Ross Gload matched a career-high with three hits and drove in three runs for the White Sox, who won for the fourth time in five games.

Chicago's Carlos Lee extended his career-high hitting streak to 17 games with a second-inning single and Frank Thomas finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored to push his hitting streak to 11 games.

Scott Schoeneweis (5-2) pitched very well in his first start against his former team, going seven innings and fanning four batters. He allowed two runs on five hits and a walk, recording his second win in three starts.

Esteban Loaiza will pitch this evening for Chicago and aim for his seventh win of the season.

Loaiza has won two consecutive starts and has allowed just three runs in 15 innings over that stretch. The righthander turned in a gem last Wednesday against Texas, allowing just two hits in eight scoreless innings. Loaiza struck out nine batters while walking two in the 4-0 win.

The 32-year-old is 6-4 with a 3.55 ERA in 15 career games (12 starts) against the Athletics.

Mark Redman will take the ball for Oakland tonight and try to rebound from a tough outing last Wednesday in Boston. Redman surrendered nine runs, although only five were earned, in 5 2/3 innings against the Red Sox. He also struck out four batters while walking five in the 9-6 loss.

The 30-year-old lefthander has posted a 2-2 record and 5.86 earned run average in seven career games (five starts) against the White Sox.

Oakland won five of nine matchups between these teams last season and is 20-7 against the White Sox since the start of the 2001 campaign.

TORONTO BLUE JAYS (22-29) AT SEATTLE MARINERS (19-31), 10:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Toronto - Roy Halladay (5-4, 3.5 Seattle - Gil Meche (1-5, 6.97)

(Sports Network) - The Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners resume their three-game series this evening with the middle contest of the set at Safeco Field.

The Blue Jays hand the ball to Roy Halladay tonight, as last year's AL Cy Young Award winner tries to push unbeaten streak to three games.

Halladay has posted a 2-0 record and 2.49 earned run average in his last three starts.

The 27-year-old came within one out of a complete game in last Thursday's 3-2 win over Anaheim. Halladay allowed two runs and four hits in 8 2/3 innings, but had to give way to reliever Jason Frasor with two outs in the ninth. Frasor recorded the final out on just one pitch.

Halladay has eight career games (six starts) against the Mariners and is 2-3 with a 3.07 ERA in those games.

Gil Meche takes the ball for the Mariners tonight and hopes to pick up his first win in nearly a month. The righthander is just 1-5 on the season with a 6.97 ERA.

Meche's only victory of the season came on May 2 in Detroit and he has been dreadful since then. Meche is 0-3 with a 10.70 earned run average in four starts in the stretch.

Meche's last outing came in Cleveland on Wednesday and he was touched for eight runs and 10 hits in just 3 1/3 innings.

The 25-year-old is 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA in three career starts against the Blue Jays.

In Monday's opener, Randy Winn drove in three runs and Jamie Moyer pitcher 7 2/3 solid innings, as Seattle defeated Toronto, 6-2. Moyer (4-2) won his third straight start by allowing two runs and seven hits while striking out four.

Ichiro Suzuki went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Mariners, who won for just the second time in their last five games. Aurilia and Edgar Martinez also drove in a run in the win.

Pat Hentgen (2-4) took the loss after being touched for four runs and eight hits over five innings. Hentgen, who is winless in his past three starts (0-2), walked three and fanned six hitters. It was the 300th career start for Hentgen.

Vernon Wells and Frank Menechino each hit solo homers for the Blue Jays, who have dropped two straight games following a five-game winning streak.

Toronto won four of seven matchups with the Mariners last season, but Seattle is 10-7 in its last 17 games against the Blue Jays.
