Cincinnati(Van Poppel) @ Florida(Phelps) 4:05 EST 5/31/2004 Selection: Under Marlins starter Phelps is coming off a brilliant 2004 debut start giving up just 1 hit in 7 innings pitched. Including his relief appearances in 2004 Phelps has a 1.04 WHIP and sterling 2.05 ERA on the year. Reds starter Van Poppel has pitched his best stretch in a very long time entering the game in good KW form off his last 3 starts with a 12/1 KW ratio and a .99 WHIP. In 4 starts in 2004 he posts a very good 3.18 ERA. In 13 games versus LHP in 2004 Cincinnati's potent lineup only averages 3.5 RPG. The Reds are 1-4 under the total in their last 5 games while Florida is 0-5 under the total in their last 5. Go under the total.

Eaton is 4-0 over the total at home in 2004 with a 6.26 ERA. Jennings is 7-3 over in 2004 with a 8.05 ERA. This game should go over just by accident. Take the Over

Chicago (N) Cubs -- Houston snapped a two game losing streak yesterday with their win over St. Louis and now travels to “The Windy City” to take on the Cubs in a three game series. The Astros have run into a bit of a cold spell losing their last seven of ten. However, they are 27-22 on the year including 12-9 on the road but are an unprofitable 10.4 units on the year. The Astros will send their right-handed veteran, R. Oswalt, to the hill today to face the Cubs in an attempt to win their second in a row. Oswalt has struggled this year as he is only 3-3 on the year with a 3.36 ERA, and 1.16 WHIP. Over his last three starts Oswalt has slipped a bit going 1-2 with an even elevated 4.50 ERA. The Astros bats have been formidable this year hitting .283 overall as a team and .281 versus right-handers scoring an average of 5.8 runs per game. Over their last seven games the Astros bats have produced even more hitting .290 overall but have slipped in run production to 4.0 runs per game. The Cubs have had struggles of their own. Yesterday the Cubs broke their longest losing streak of the season with their win over Pittsburgh and, like Houston, have lost seven of their last ten. The Cubs have played well at home this year so far going 14-9 overall but are an unprofitable 7.6 units on the year. The Cubs will send their veteran right-hander, G. Maddux, to the mound today to face the Astros for the second time this season with a 3-4 record, a 4.74 ERA, and 1.32 WHIP. In his home starts Maddux is only 1-2 with an even higher 5.87 ERA. The Cubs have been average at the plate at home with a .270 average overall but improve to .294 in day games this year scoring an average of 6.0 runs per game. Versus divisional opponents Chicago has produced at the plate hitting .288 and has scored an average of 5.5 runs per game. The clinchers: Oswalt is 3-7 ATS as a favorite of -110 or higher this season. Oswalt is 1-6 ATS in May games over the last three seasons. Houston is 1-5 ATS on the road versus National League teams who give up less than 4.3 runs per game this season. Here you have two teams struggling and both still in the thick of the divisional races. I’m going to look at value in this one and take the Cubs, at home as an underdog (plus 40 units over the last five seasons). Go Cubbies

San Diego w/Eaton over Colorado w/Jennings In a right back revenge rematch Eaton takes the hill knowing the Rockies are 2-12 away at night against righties this season. Look for the Rockies to dip to 2-7 I road series openers tonight.

TORONTO (Hentgen) +154 at SEATTLE (Moyer) -164: MLB - 10:05PM (EST) Jamie Moyer has been pitching better lately, but today’s line appears to be over-valuing the Mariners here a bit against a Blue Jays team that has now won 5 of their last 6. Seattle is just 9-13 at home this season & averages under 3.5 runs per game. On the other hand, Toronto puts up over 5 runs per game on the road. Take what you’re given here and & roll with Toronto as a solid value underdog on Monday night.
