          BALTIMORE ORIOLES (22-23) AT DETROIT TIGERS (22-26), 1:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Baltimore - Erik Bedard (1-2, 4.91) Detroit - Mike Maroth (4-3, 4.91)

(Sports Network) - The Baltimore Orioles look to make it a clean sweep of the Detroit Tigers today, when they square off in the final contest of their three-game series from Comerica Park.

Taking the hill for the Orioles today will be rookie Erik Bedard. The 24-year- old lefthander has allowed just two earned runs in each of his last two starts, but is only 1-1 over that time. In his last outing on Tuesday, Bedard allowed two earned runs and five hits over four innings of an 11-3 setback to the New York Yankees.

Bedard, who has struck out 29 batters in 33 innings of work this season, has never faced the Tigers in his brief major league career.

Mike Maroth takes the mound for the Detroit today, hoping to avoid a three- game sweep to the Orioles at Comerica Park for the second straight season. The crafty lefthander has dropped his last two outings, allowing seven earned runs over 12 1/3 innings of work. Maroth has been solid at home this season, going 2-0 with a 2.53 ERA in three starts.

Maroth has fared well against Baltimore in his career, with a 1-1 mark and a 2.74 ERA in three appearances.

In the second game of the series on Saturday, Larry Bigbie drove in three runs and Miguel Tejada homered to lift the Orioles to an 8-4 win over the Tigers.

Tejada and Jerry Hairston Jr. each drove in a pair of runs for the Orioles, who have won two in a row after losing a season-high seven straight. Tejada has homered in three straight games.

Daniel Cabrera (3-1) struggled through five innings, but rebounded from his first major league loss to win for the third time in four career starts. The Dominican righthander, who turned 23 years old Friday, gave up three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits while walking four and striking out three.

Detroit starter Jeremy Bonderman (4-4) took the loss, surrendering seven runs on 10 hits in just 2 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out two.

Ivan Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI for the Tigers, who have dropped five of six.

The Tigers split six meetings with the Orioles last season after winning the final three matchups.

The Orioles are an even 10-10 away from Camden Yards this season, while the Tigers have struggled at home, posting just a 10-13 mark.

Melvin Mora extended his hitting streak to 11 games (20-for-46) by going 1- for-5 on Saturday.

          OAKLAND ATHLETICS (26-22) AT CLEVELAND INDIANS (21-26), 1:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Oakland - Tim Hudson (5-2, 3.36) Cleveland - Jason Davis (1-3, 5.63)

(Sports Network) - The Cleveland Indians will try to complete the three-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics in the final contest of the series at Jacobs Field.

The last time the Tribe was able to sweep the Athletics in Cleveland was back on June 15-17 in 1999.

Heading to the mound for the Athletics this afternoon will be Tim Hudson. After going 3-0 in the month of April, Hudson is just 2-2 in the month of May with one of those two losses coming in his last outing on May 25th. In that game, Hudson lasted just four innings as he allowed five runs on nine hits and four walks in the 12-2 loss to the Red Sox.

Hudson has struggled in seven career starts against the Indians, posting a 1-2 record with an uncharacteristic ERA of 7.14.

The Indians will counter with Jason Davis today. Davis is 0-1 in his last four starts and has not won since May 4th. In that outing, Davis allowed just two run son six hits in six innings of work.

In his last start, Davis pitched well; allowing just two runs on six hits in seven innings, but despite the effort, Davis did not record the decision.

In his lone career start against the Athletics, Davis is 0-1 with an ERA of 5.68.

Saturday night, Jody Gerut and Travis Hafner each had RBI singles to highlight a three-run eighth as the Cleveland Indians came from behind to beat Oakland, 8-6, in the second of a three-game set at Jacobs Field.

Hafner finished with three RBI and Gerut drove in a pair of runs. Omar Vizquel went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Indians, winners of three straight after dropping their previous seven.

The late rally made a winner of David Riske (1-2), who tossed two shutout innings. Newly anointed closer Jose Jimenez worked the ninth for his first save in the American League.

Oakland reliever Arthur Rhodes (1-2) suffered the loss after allowing the final two runs to come across. Starter Rich Harden left the game with the lead, surrendering five runs -- three earned -- on two hits and six walks in five-plus innings of work. He fanned four.

Eric Chavez knocked in three runs for the Athletics, who dropped their fourth game in five chances. Erubiel Durazo added a two-run double in the setback.

The A's took six of nine from Cleveland last season and a 11-5 in the last 16 meetings against the Indians.

The Athletics are 14-13 on the road this season, while the Indians are 15-11 at Jacobs Field.

TEXAS RANGERS (26-22) AT TORONTO BLUE JAYS (22-27), 1:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Texas - Kenny Rogers (7-2, 3.34) Toronto - Justin Miller (1-0, 4.04)

(Sports Network) - The Toronto Blue Jays shoot for their sixth straight win today, when they conclude a three-game series with the Texas Rangers from SkyDome.

Taking the mound for the Blue Jays today will be Justin Miller. The 25-year- old righthander has earned just one decision in six starts this season. In his last outing on Monday Miller allowed a season-high five earned runs and three home runs, but did not receive a decision in an eventual 6-5 victory over the Anaheim Angels.

Miller has thrown just one inning against the Rangers in his career, allowing two earned runs on two hits.

Countering for Texas will be Kenny Rogers, who is trying to become the Major League's first eight-game winner. The crafty lefthander has won his last three starts, lasting at least six innings in each. In his last appearance on May 25th, Rogers yielded just two earned runs over six innings of a 7-4 triumph over the Chicago White Sox.

Rogers has appeared in 21 career games against the Blue Jays, posting a 12-7 mark with a 3.44 ERA. He has won his last three decisions against Toronto and is 5-4 in 10 all-time starts at SkyDome.

On Saturday, Miguel Batista threw eight strong innings to lead Toronto over the Rangers, 6-2, in the second game.

Batista (3-4) scattered just five hits and yielded only two runs after starting the contest with six shutout innings. He struck out a season-high seven batters and walked three.

Eric Hinske and Reed Johnson drove in two runs apiece as the Blue Jays extended their winning streak to five games. Chris Gomez helped out with a 3- for-4 performance and a run scored.

Texas starter Juan Dominguez lasted 5 2/3 innings but was dealt the loss after yielding three runs on eight hits and a pair of walks. He fanned four in the setback, the fourth in a row for the Rangers.

Eric Young was the only Texas player to record a multiple hit game, going 2- for-3 with a walk.

With the win on Saturday, the Blue Jays improved to 14-13 at home after starting the season 0-8.

Texas won five of nine meetings with the Blue Jays last season and are 13-7 against Toronto since the start of the 2002 campaign.

The Blue Jays haven't swept the Rangers since taking both contests of a two- game set in 2001.

NEW YORK YANKEES (30-18) AT TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS (16-31), 1:15 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: New York - Jon Lieber (4-1, 3.53) Tampa Bay - Victor Zambrano (4-4, 5.63)

(Sports Network) - The New York Yankees will try to complete the three-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays this afternoon in the final contest at Tropicana Field.

The Yankees last swept the Devil Rays in Tampa Bay back on September 19th-21st of the 2003 season.

Heading to the mound for the Yankees will be Jon Lieber, who will be going for his fourth straight victory this afternoon. The 34-year-old has not lost since May 7th when he was defeated 6-2 by the Mariners.

Since that loss the righthander has posted three straight victories including his last outing on Tuesday when he defeated the Baltimore Orioles. In that game, Lieber tossed seven innings, allowing just two runs on four hits.

Today will be the first career appearance for Lieber against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The Devil Rays will send Victor Zambrano to the rubber this afternoon. Zambrano began the season with three straight victories, only to drop four of his next seven contests, that was until May 25th when he posted his fourth victory of the season against the Twins.

In that outing, the 28-year-old tossed seven strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits, while striking out eight batters in the process.

Thus far this season Zambrano is 2-0 against the Bronx Bombers, but despite the impressive record, the righthander has struggled in the two contests, allowing seven runs on eight walks and eight hits in just 11 innings. In his career, Zambrano is 4-3 in nine starts with an ERA of 4.64.

Last night, Kevin Brown worked in into the eighth and Bernie Williams smacked three hits, including a solo homer, to lead New York to a 5-3 win. Brown (6-1) surrendered three runs on three hits in 7 2/3 innings and struck out five for the Yankees, who posted their sixth straight victory.

Mariano Rivera pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 18th save.

Ruben Sierra and Enrique Wilson each added a solo shot for New York.

Toby Hall homered and finished with two hits for the Devil Rays, who lost their second straight game and for the third time in their last four.

Sierra's solo homer sparked a two-run rally in the sixth. With two outs, Wilson walked, stole second and came home on a single to left by Derek Jeter.

A hit by Williams then chased Hendrickson (2-5), who absorbed the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Brown -- who improved to 4-0 against the Devil Rays this season -- breezed through seven innings. He allowed just one hit, a leadoff single by Hall in the third.

Yankee centerfielder Bernie Williams needs 10 hits to become the seventh Yankee to reach 2,000. Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Don Mattingly, and Yogi Berra are also on that list.

Veteran first baseman Fred McGriff has rejoined the Devil Rays as his contract was selected by the team earlier on Friday from Triple-A Durham. He is the club?s all-time leader in batting average (.295), home runs (97), RBI (352), runs scored (270), at-bats (2002), hits (590), extra-base hits (197), and walks (296). He is nine homers shy of becoming the 20th player in major league history to amass 500 home runs.

This is a series traditionally dominated by the Yankees, as they have won 19 of the last 26 meetings, including 14 of the last 17 encounters. New York has also won 11 of its last 14 and 17 of its last 23 in St. Petersburg.

SEATTLE MARINERS (18-30) AT BOSTON RED SOX (30-19), 2:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Seattle - Ryan Franklin (2-4, 4.75) Boston - Curt Schilling (6-3, 2.82)

(Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners and Boston Red Sox will square off this afternoon in the final contest of their three-game set at Fenway Park.

Heading to the mound for the Mariners this afternoon will be Ryan Franklin, who is winless in his last three outings and has not posted a victory since May 7th when he defeated the New York Yankees. The last time Franklin stepped on the rubber was Tuesday when he allowed four runs on six hits in six innings of work.

In two appearances against the Red Sox, Franklin is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA.

The Red Sox will counter with Curt Schilling against the Mariners. Schilling has been spectacular in his past two starts, allowing just a total of three runs on 14 hits in 14 innings of work and has struck out 10 batters.

In his last start on Tuesday, the 37-year-old allowed just two runs on nine hits in seven innings of work in his 12-2 victory over the Athletics.

In his outstanding career, Schilling has only tossed 3 1/3 innings against the Mariners and allowed two runs on three walks and four hits during those innings.

Yesterday, Dan Wilson went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs and Raul Ibanez hit a solo home run to lift Seattle to a 5-4 win in the middle contest of the set. John Olerud had an RBI and Ichiro Suzuki ended 2-for-5 for Seattle, which snapped a two-game losing streak. Dave Hansen finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the triumph.

Manny Ramirez homered and drove in two runs for the Red Sox, who have dropped two out of three.

Freddy Garcia (3-3) allowed four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings as he evened up his record. He struck out three with two walks for Seattle.

Mike Myers struck out all three batters he faced, Shigetoshi Hasegawa recorded four outs, and Eddie Guardado came on to work the ninth to preserve the lead.

Guardado, though, made things interesting as he gave up a two-out single to Mark Bellhorn in the ninth to bring the winning run to the plate. However, Guardado nailed down his ninth save of the season by inducing David Ortiz into a game-ending fly out.

Tim Wakefield (4-3) lasted 6 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits for Boston. He struck out two and walked three. Kevin Millar and Bellhorn each stroked two hits for Boston, which lost for only the third time in its last eight contests.

The Red Sox are 17-8 at Fenway this season, while the Mariners are just 9-17 away from the confines of Safeco Field.

MINNESOTA TWINS (26-22) AT KANSAS CITY ROYALS (17-29), 2:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Minnesota - Kyle Lohse (1-4, 6.07) Kansas City - Jimmy Gobble (2-2, 4.28)

(Sports Network) - The Minnesota Twins try to snap a three game slide today, when they take on the Kansas City Royals in the final contest of a three-game series from Kauffman Stadium.

Getting the call for the Twins today is the struggling Kyle Lohse. The young righthander hasn't posted a victory since an 8-4 triumph over Kansas City on April 17th. Lohse has been flat out awful in the month of May, posting an 0-2 record with a 5.65 ERA in five starts. He is winless in his last seven starts overall.

Lohse has struggled in his career against the Royals despite holding a 3-2 mark. He has an ERA of 5.26 and has allowed 60 hits in 53 career innings against Kansas City.

Countering for the Royals today is Jimmy Gobble. The 22-year-old southpaw was effective in his last two starts, allowing five earned runs over a combined 13 innings of work. The Royals are an even 4-4 in Gobble's starts this season.

Gobble is 0-1 with a 6.43 ERA in four career appearances against the Twins.

On Saturday, Matt Stairs tied the game with a solo homer and Carlos Beltran stroked a three-run double during a four-run seventh inning, as Kansas City rallied to defeat Minnesota, 5-2, in the middle contest.

Ken Harvey also drove in a run for the Royals, who have won four of their last five games.

Dennys Reyes (1-0) picked up the win after tossing seven strong innings. Reyes permitted just two runs on six hits while striking out eight and walking four.

Jeremy Affeldt worked a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his third save of the season.

Torii Hunter and Michael Cuddyer each drove in a run for the Twins, who have dropped three straight and seven of their last nine contests.

Johan Santana (2-3) suffered the loss after being charged with four runs and six hits over 6 1/3 innings. Santana, who has three straight losses since going 10-0 dating back to July of 2003, walked two, but struck out six.

Kansas City is 12-11 at home this season, while the Twins have posted a 12-14 mark on the road.

Minnesota took five of its six meetings with the Royals last season and was 2-1 in KC. The Twins are also 19-14 in their last 33 visits to Kauffman Stadium.

The Royals have not swept the Twins in a three-game set at home since the 1994 season.

ANAHEIM ANGELS (30-19) AT CHICAGO WHITE SOX (28-20), 3:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Anaheim - John Lackey (3-5, 4.98) Chicago - Scott Schoeneweis (4-2, 3.77)

(Sports Network) - Scott Schoeneweis makes his first start against his former team today, when the Chicago White Sox conclude a three-game series with the Anaheim Angels from U.S. Cellular Field.

The crafty lefthander pitched for the Angels from 1999 until last season, when the White Sox acquired him in a trade. Schoeneweis was an integral part and the only lefthander in the Anaheim bullpen, during the team's run to a World Series title in 2002. However, adding a cutter and changeup to his assortment of pitches this offseason has turned Schoeneweis into one of the White Sox's most viable starters this year. Schoeneweis has allowed three runs or less in four of his last five outings, going 2-1 over that period.

Schoeneweis faced the Angels just one time in his career, throwing 1 2/3 innings of relief in 2003.

Countering for the Anaheim will be John Lackey. The inconsistent righthander has earned losses in two of his last three outings following a three-game winning streak. In his last appearance on May 24hh, Lackey allowed four earned runs and six hits over 5 2/3 innings of an eventual 6-5 setback to Toronto.

Lackey has made one career start against the White Sox, taking the loss after allowing three earned runs and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings of work.

In the second game of the series on Saturday, Jeff DaVanon went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored while Aaron Sele pitched 6 1/3 strong innings to lead the Angels to 5-1 victory over the White Sox.

Vladimir Guerrero went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to eight games for the Angels, who snapped a four-game skid.

Paul Konerko homered for the White Sox, who had their win streak halted at three games.

White Sox pitcher Jon Rauch (0-1), who was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte prior to the game to make the start, surrendered five runs on 10 hits and one walk over 3 2/3 innings.

Rightfielder Magglio Ordonez (strained left calf) missed his fourth straight game. He had an MRI conducted Friday that revealed no structural damage to his leg. Ordonez is expected to miss Sunday's series finale and will be re- evaluated Tuesday.

The White Sox took four of their seven matchups with Anaheim last season, but have dropped 16 of the last 27 meetings. The Angels dropped all three contests in Chicago last year.

Sunday, May 30th (All times eastern)
              CINCINNATI REDS (29-20) AT MONTREAL EXPOS (15-33), 1:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Cincinnati - Joe Valentine (0-0, 0.00) Montreal - Tomo Ohka (3-5, 3.53)

(Sports Network) - Joe Valentine will get an emergency start this afternoon for the Cincinnati Reds, as they try to complete a three-game sweep of the lowly Montreal Expos at Olympic Stadium

Undefeated Paul Wilson was scheduled to take the hill, but he suffered an injured groin in his last trip to the hill against the Florida Marlins. The injury is not considered serious, but the Reds are trying to err on the better side of caution. However, there is not timetable for his return.

So, it will be the 24-year-old Valentine on the mound this afternoon in his season debut. Valentine has made two relief appearances in his career for the Reds and has allowed four runs in five hits in just two innings of major league action (18.00 ERA).

Montreal will counter with Japanese righthander Tomo Ohka, who has won his last two decisions and is coming off a brilliant effort against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. In that contest, the 28-year-old hurler allowed one unearned run on six hits over seven innings and improved to 2-5 on the season, while dropping his ERA to 3.25.

Ohka, who had lost his first five starts of the season, has been brilliant in two career starts against the Reds, winning both contests and pitching to a 0.64 ERA.

In the middle contest of the set on Saturday, Jose Acevedo ended a six-start winless streak with seven solid innings and Adam Dunn hit a tie-breaking home run to lead Cincinnati to a 4-1 win.

Acevedo (3-3) allowed one run on five hits for the Reds, who have won two straight and nine of their last 11.

Endy Chavez homered and Nick Johnson finished with two hits for the Expos, who managed just five hits on the way to their third loss in a row and eighth in nine games.

Zach Day (3-6) absorbed the loss despite permitting just three hits in seven innings. He allowed three runs and walked six with five strikeouts.

A win today would give the Reds their first three-game sweep of the Expos since turning the trick from August 14-16, 2000 in Montreal.

Montreal has posted a 9-5 mark over the last 14 matchups with the Reds and have taken three of the last five meetings at Olympic Stadium. However, the Reds have won 18 of their last 26 games north of the border.

              CHICAGO CUBS (25-23) AT PITTSBURGH PIRATES (23-22), 1:35 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago - Carlos Zambrano (4-2, 2.49) Pittsburgh - Sean Burnett (0-0, 0.00)

(Sports Network) - Sean Burnett makes his major league debut this afternoon when the Pittsburgh Pirates try to complete a sweep in their four-game series with the Chicago Cubs at PNC Park.

Pittsburgh has not swept a four-game series from the Cubs since taking four straight from them at Wrigley Field from June 11-14, 2962. The Pirates, though, have swept a five-game series from Chicago in that time (June 20-23, 1983).

Burnett, the organization's two-time Minor League Pitcher-of-the-Year, nearly made the jump from Double-A to the majors before losing out on the competition for the final spot in the starting rotation to Ryan Vogelsong during the last week of spring training

The 20-year-old hurler was Burnett was 1-2 with a 4.83 ERA in seven starts with Triple-A Nashville this season.

Chicago will pin its hopes on righthander Carlos Zambrano, who is 4-2 on the season with a 2.49 ERA in nine starts. On Tuesday against the Houston Astros, the 22-year-old hurler absorbed the loss, as he allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings.

Zambrano, who topped the Bucos earlier in the year, has faced the Pirates seven times in his career, five of which have been starts. and is 2-2 against them with a 4.68 ERA.

In the third game of the set on Saturday, Rob Mackowiak hit a three-run homer and finished with a career-high five RBI to lead Pittsburgh to a 10-7 come- from-behind victory.

Since the birth of his first child on Friday morning, Mackowiak has been unstoppable. He hit a tying two-run homer in the ninth inning in Game 2 on Friday after belting a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 9-5 victory in Game 1.

Josh Fogg (3-4) gave up five runs on seven hits over six innings, but picked up his third straight win nonetheless.

Aramis Ramirez homered and finished with four RBI and Derrek Lee hit a two-run shot for the Cubs, who have lost five in a row.

Sergio Mitre (2-4) absorbed the loss, as he was charged with six runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings.

The Pirates have won 10 of their last 14 and at 23-22 are over .500 this late in the season for the first time since June 6, 1997 when the club was 30-29.

THese two teams have split their eight matchups this season, but the Pirates have won three of five at PNC Park. The Cubs are 34-27 against the Pirates since the start of the 2001 campaign.

The Cubs are 12-14 on the road this season, while Pittsburgh is just 9-13 in its friendly confines.

              ATLANTA BRAVES (24-24) AT PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (26-21), 1:35 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Atlanta - Horacio Ramirez (2-4, 2.28) Philadelphia - Eric Milton (5-1, 4.47)

(Sports Network) - Eric Milton tries to bounce back from his first loss of the season this afternoon when the Philadelphia Phillies conclude their four-game series with the Atlanta Braves at Citizens Bank Park.

Milton, acquired from Minnesota in the offseason, had won his first five decisions, but absorbed the loss on Tuesday against the New York Mets. IN that outing, the 28-year-old lefthander allowed three runs on six hits over six innings. He also struck out seven and walked three, but fell 5-1 on the year to go along with a 4.47 earned run average.

A native of State College, PA, Milton has faced Atlanta just once in his career and did not receive a decision in that contest, as the allowed five runs and six hits in seven innings.

Atlanta will counter with a southpaw of its own in 24-year-old Horacio Ramirez, who lost for the first time in four starts in his last trip to the hill on Tuesday against the Montreal Expos. Ramirez yielded three runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings in the setback, as he fell to 2-4 on the year, while raising his ERA to 2.28.

Ramirez has been brilliant over the course of his brief career against the Phillies, posting a 2-0 mark with a 1.38 ERA in two starts.

In the middle contest of the set on Saturday, J.D. Drew homered and finished with three RBI, as Atlanta rolled to a 9-3 victory. Rafael Furcal added a two- run triple and DeWayne Wise went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs for the Braves, who have won three of their last four contests.

John Thomson (4-2) picked up the win after allowing three runs -- one earned -- on eight hits over seven innings. Thomson struck out six and walked one.

Jimmy Rollins and Pat Burrell each had two hits and an RBI for the Phillies, who have dropped two of the first three games in the set.

Vicente Padilla (4-5) was the loser after he permitted four runs and five hits over five innings of work while walking a pair and fanning four. Padilla left the game after the fifth inning due to tendinitis in his right elbow and was placed on the 15-day disabled list shortly after the contest.

Elsewhere on the injury front Braves' outfielder Chipper Jones sat out yesterday's game after getting drilled in the knee by a Randy Wolf pitch in Friday's tilt. Jones will likely miss today's finale, as well.

First baseman Julio Franco, who has missed the last four games with a sore back, is expected to miss today's tilt also.

The Braves have captured seven of their last 10 on the road and are 13-14 away from home this season. Philadelphia, meanwhile, is 13-10 in its ballpark this year.

Philadelphia, which will head to Turner Field next weekend for a four-game set, went 10-9 last year versus Atlanta for their first season series win over the Braves since 1991.

SAN DIEGO PADRES (27-22) AT MILWAUKEE BREWERS (25-22), 2:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Diego - Ismael Valdez (3-2, 5.32) Milwaukee - Victor Santos (2-1, 3.90)

(Sports Network) - Ismael Valdez hopes to put a horrendous outing in his last effort behind him this afternoon when the San Diego Padres conclude their three-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.

On Tuesday against the Colorado Rockies, Valdez was pounded for six runs and nine hits in just three innings, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 11-6 win.

The 30-year-old righthander is winless in his last five appearances and is 0-2 in that time with an enormous 7.92 earned run average. For the year he is 3-2 with a 5.32 ERA.

Valdez is 3-3 lifetime against the Brewers with a 4.04 ERA in seven starts.

Milwaukee, meanwhile, will pin its hopes on righthander Victor Santos, who is 2-1 on the year with a 3.90 ERA. In his last trip to the hill on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Santos received the loss, as he allowed four runs on four hits over four innings.

Santos has faced the Padres twice out of the bullpen and is 0-1 against them and has allowed five runs in just 1 1/3 innings of action.

In the middle contest of the set on Saturday, Wes Obermueller pitched six innings for the win and stroked a three-run double to help his own cause, leading Milwaukee to a 4-3 victory.

Obermueller (3-1), who set a career-high with six strikeouts, yielded just one run on six hits with two walks in his first start since May 12.

Obermueller's double in the second inning was one of just three hits surrendered by San Diego's Dennis Tankersley, who was making his first start of the season in place of an injured Jake Peavy.

Tankersley (0-1) held the Brewers hitless in five of his six innings, but took the loss without yielding an earned run. He set a career-high with nine strikeouts, walked two and retired the final 13 batters he faced.

Milwaukee has won three of four, while San Diego had its two-game winning streak snapped.

The Brewers, who are 13-11 this month, need to win one of their final two games this month to clinch consecutive winning months for the first time since April and May 2001.

Milwaukee is 11-3 versus the Padres since the start of the 2002 season.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (26-22) AT HOUSTON ASTROS (26-22), 2:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: St. Louis - Matt Morris (4-4, 3.84) Houston - Tim Redding (2-3, 5.49)

(Sports Network) - Tim Redding tries to win his third straight decision this afternoon when the Houston Astros conclude their three-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals at MInute Maid Park.

Redding opened the season by dropping his first three starts, but has not lost since. He is 2-0 over his last four starts, but is coming off a no-decision in his last outing on Monday against the Cincinnati Reds. In that contest Redding allowed four runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings.

The 26-year-old righthander, who was hammered by the Cardinals earlier in the year, is 2-3 lifetime against St. Louis with a 4.31 ERA in eight games, seven starts. Back on April 21, Redding's last loss, St. Louis pounded the Rochester, NY native for eight runs and nine hits in just 3 2/3 innings of work.

St. Louis will counter with righthander Matt Morris, who is 4-4 on the season with a 3.84 ERA. Morris enters today's tilt on a losing note after falling to the Chicago Cubs last Sunday. The 29-year-old hurler yielded four runs and nine hits over seven innings in that one, while striking out four and walking a batter.

Morris, who topped Houston earlier in the season, has faced the Astros 24 times in his career, 21 of which have been starts, and is 7-8 against them with a 3.55 ERA.

In the middle game of the series on Saturday, Albert Pujols hit a pair of solo homers and drove in three runs to lead St. Louis to a 10-3 win. Pujols ended 4-for-5 while Roger Cedeno hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, who have won three straight games.

Woody Williams (2-5) earned the win as the St. Louis starter permitted three runs and eight hits over six-plus innings while striking out three and walking three batters.

Jeff Kent and Craig Biggio each had two hits and an RBI for the Astros, who have dropped two consecutive contests and seven of their last nine overall.

Wade Miller (5-5) took the loss after yielding four runs and seven hits over just four innings. The righthander walked three and fanned three.

Kent extended his streak to 14 games, a season high and is hitting .373 (19- for-51) during the streak.

St. Louis has won five of the eight meetings this season with all five victories coming on the road. Most recently, St. Louis recorded a three-game sweep of Houston at Minute Maid Park from April 20-22. Houston still owns a 14-12 advantage in this set since the start of last season.

The Astros are 14-13 at home this year, while St. Louis owns a 15-8 road mark.

NEW YORK METS (23-25) AT FLORIDA MARLINS (29-20), 3:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: New York - Steve Trachsel (5-3, 2.83) Florida - Josh Beckett (4-4, 3.95)

(Sports Network) - Steve Trachsel tries to win his fourth consecutive decision this afternoon, as the New York Mets attempt to salvage the finale of their three-game set with the Florida Marlins at Pro Player Stadium.

Trachsel has been brilliant for the Mets since allowing eight runs in his season-debut back on April 7. In his last nine starts the veteran righthander has amassed a 5-2 mark to go along with a 1.78 earned run average in that time. He is also 3-0 in May with 1.36 ERA.

The 33-year-old hurler was sensational on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies, as he scattered four hits over 6 2/3 scoreless innings to improve to 5-3 on the year with a 2.83 ERA. He has not allowed a run in his last two starts, spanning 13 2/3 frames.

Trachsel is 7-10 lifetime against the Marlins with a 3.29 ERA in 22 starts.

Florida will counter with 24-year-old righthander Josh Beckett, who has alternated wins and losses in his last four starts. On Tuesday against the Cincinnati Reds, Beckett absorbed the loss as he allowed four runs and four hits in six innings and fell to 4-4, while raising his ERA to 3.95.

Beckett has faced the Mets just five times in his career and is 1-1 against them with a 3.54 ERA.

In the middle contest of the set on Saturday, Mike Lowell belted a solo homer in the bottom of the 10th off Braden Looper to lift the Marlins to a 3-2 win.

The home run for Lowell was his 14th of the season and came against a former teammate. Looper (0-1), a reliever on Florida's championship team last year, was making his first appearance against his old team.

Lowell lifted the second pitch he saw from Looper to finish 2-for-2 on the day, making a winner out of Justin Wayne (3-1), who threw a scoreless 10th.

The Marlins picked up their fourth straight win and eighth in 10 games with the aid of seven strong innings by starter Carl Pavano. He yielded two runs on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts, but did not factor in the decision.

Ty Wigginton homered in defeat for the Mets, owners of a three-game losing streak.

A win today by the Marlins would give them their first three-game sweep of the Mets since taking three straight from them from September 8-10 of last season.

Armando Benitez did not get into Saturday's contest, but the Florida closer has not allowed an earned run since Opening Day, a span of 27 2/3 innings. Opposing batters are also hitless in their last 33 plate appearances against Benitez.

Mets outfielder Mike Cameron, hampered by a torn ligament in his pinkie, has just one hit in his last 18 at-bats and is mired in a 4-for-42 slump. He has just one RBI in his last 16 games and is hitting a season-low .197.

To make matters worse for the Mets last night, they lost left fielder Cliff Floyd to a deep hip bruise after a collision with Cameron. Floyd will likely miss today's tilt, but hopes to return on Monday when the Mets start a three- game set with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Florida has won 14 of its last 21 against the Mets, including eight of the last nine meetings.

COLORADO ROCKIES (18-30) AT SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (24-24), 4:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Colorado - Joe Kennedy (4-2, 3.49) San Francisco - Jason Schmidt (5-2, 2.78)

(Sports Network) - Jason Schmidt tries to win his sixth straight decision this afternoon when the San Francisco Giants conclude their three-game series against the Colorado Rockies at SBC Park.

Schmidt, who won 17 games a year ago, has been sensational for the Giants since dropping his first two games of the year. The 31-year-old righthander hasn't given up more than three earned runs in any of his last six starts, going 5-0 in that time.

His most recent victory came on Tuesday, as he limited the Arizona Diamondbacks to one run and four hits over eight innings, improving to 5-2 on the season, while lowering his earned run average to 2.78.

Schmidt has been impressive against the Rockies in his career and is 8-2 against them with a 3.84 ERA in 14 games, 13 starts.

Colorado's hopes today will rest on the left arm of Joe Kennedy, who is winless in his last four starts. After opening the season by winning his first four decisions, the 25-year-old hurler has dropped his last two and his seen his ERA rise to 3.49.

On Tuesday against the San Diego Padres, Kennedy escaped with a no-decision, as he allowed six runs and seven hits over five innings.

Kennedy, who will be making just his second start against the Giants, won his only other appearance against San Francisco with a solid seven-inning, three- run effort.

In the second game of the set on Saturday, Yorvit Torrealba drove in a pair of runs and Dustan Mohr homered to lead San Francisco to a 5-3 victory. Barry Bonds scored once and drove in a run for the Giants, who have won eight straight.

Jerome Williams threw 7 1/3 innings to notch his first win since April 24. Williams (4-3) was charged with three runs on eight hits.

Todd Helton, back in the starting lineup for the first time in eight games, scored once and drove in a run for the Rockies, who have lost nine of their last 10 games.

A win today by the Giants, who were a season-worst eight games below .500 on May 19, would give them their first three game sweep of the Rockies since June 29-July 1, 1999.

This is the first series of the season between these clubs. San Francisco is 34-24 against the Rockies since 2001, including a 21-9 record at SBC Park.

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (18-31) AT LOS ANGELES DODGERS (25-22), 8:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Arizona - Casey Fossum (0-2, 7.53) Los Angeles - Kazuhisa Ishii (5-3, 3.88)

(Sports Network) - Casey Fossum tries to stop a personal two-game losing streak this afternoon when the Arizona Diamondbacks conclude their three-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.

Fossum, one of the players acquired from Boston in the Curt Schilling deal, is winless in his three starts this season and has been on the losing end in his last two outings. In Tuesday's setback to the San Francisco Giants, the lefthander allowed four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 frames, falling to 0-2 on the season.

The 26-year-old, who has pitched to a 7.53 earned run average this year, has made two relief appearances against the Dodgers and has not allowed a run in 3 1/3 innings out of the pen.

Los Angeles will counter with lefthander Kazuhisa Ishii, who is winless in his last three starts. Ishii received a no-decision in his last outing on Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers, as he yielded two runs on four hits over 4 2/3 innings.

For the year the 30-year-old Ishii is 5-3 with a 3.88 ERA.

Ishii has faced the Diamondbacks seven times in his career and is 3-1 against them with a sparkling 1.50 ERA in seven starts.

On Saturday, Jose Lima struck out seven in eight shutout innings, and the Dodgers got three-run homers from Adrian Beltre and Juan Encarnacion on the way to a 10-0 rout in the second game of this series.

Lima (4-1), making his fourth start of the season, yielded just two hits and a walk for the win. Eric Gagne got three outs in the ninth inning to end the game.

Paul LoDuca was 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI singles and two runs scored for the Dodgers, who snapped a three-game losing streak to win for just the third time in 15 games. They also halted a five-game skid at home.

Arizona starter Brandon Webb (2-5) was charged with seven of the 10 Dodger runs in four-plus innings, yielding eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Los Angeles centerfielder Milton Bradley was 2-for-2 before leaving the game with a mild left ankle sprain in the sixth inning. He was injured trying to break up a double play at second base.

Elsewhere on the injury front, Arizona lost second baseman Matt Kata to a dislocated left shoulder in the second inning. He was hurt diving to stop an Alex Cora grounder.

The Diamondbacks won 10 of the 19 meetings last season. This series has been traditionally tight as Arizona is 30-29 versus LA since the start of the 2001 season.

Arizona, in the midst of a 13-game road trip, is 10-17 away from home this season, while the Dodgers are 12-11 at Chavez Ravine.
