This Week's Free Staff Play
Seattle @ Boston (Saturday)
Freddie Garcia (2-3 2.71 era) vs. Tim Wakefield (4-2 3.21 era)
A pitchers dual in the offing on Saturday. The M?s who are on a 4-6 run through Thursday, are bringing up the rear in the Al West and sport an 8-16 road log to date. Garcia can be dominant and comes off an impressive 7 inning winning effort over Detroit giving up 4 hits and just one earned run. He wins in streaks with a 93 mph fastball. The Mariners? hitting woes continue and they are 13th out of 14 AL teams in runs scored with just 193 while the Bosox have compiled 251 runs, 4th best in the AL. The Red Sox are running neck and neck with the Yankees for the top spot in the AL East and have won seven of their last ten. Wakefield is on a two game winning streak after a 7 inning effort over Toronto last Sunday. The knuckleballer can be most effective following a fastball pitcher like Pedro Martinez who worked last night. Play the Boston Red Sox

MLB Selection inside
Chi Cubs at Pittsburgh
7:05 pm EDT Sat May 29, 2004
After enjoying what was likely the best day of his life, Rob Mackowiak looks to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates over the .500 mark as they resume a four-game series with the Chicago Cubs at PNC Park.
Mackowiak celebrated the birth of his first son Friday by leading the Pirates to a dramatic doubleheader sweep of the Cubs. Hours after his wife, Jennifer, gave birth to their first son, Mackowiak hit his first career grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give the Pirates a 9-5 win in the opener.
Mackowiak and the Pirates carried that momentum into the nightcap, which the outfielder tied with a two-run homer in the ninth before Craig Wilson's game-winning homer in the 10th gave the Pirates a 5-4 victory.
``It's just hard to imagine ever having a better day than this,'' Mackowiak said.
The doubleheader sweep got the Pirates back to the .500 mark, as they try to stay competitive in the tough NL Central. Over 9' runs.

-- NEXT UPDATE will be sent before 6:00am Pacific on Sunday, May 30th.
Season record: 103-112 -20.88 UNITS
(Note: WOB is now 50-30, 62.5% on OVER/UNDER plays this season.)
Lines from Pinnacle current as of 11:30pm Pacific on 05/27/04.
Six plays for Saturday:
ATL (THOMSON) +139 over Phi (Padilla) - 1 UNIT - 10:20am Pacific
Padilla tried to dispel rumors about elbow problems by throwing six innings and earning a win in his last start. However, it was a shaky appearance, as he struggled throughout and didn't have his usual velocity. He has also experienced elbow soreness in between starts. Thomson has been up and down, but his last start was encouraging. Will be counting on Atlanta scoring off of a less than 100% Padilla in this one.
HOU (MILLER) -149 over STL (Williams) - 1 UNIT - 1:05pm Pacific
MIller has a .215 BAA, and has had around the same success over his career against the current Cardinal hitters. Williams' flyball tendencies will hurt him at Minute Maid Park. I expect the Houston offense to give Miller and staff adequate run support today.
OVER 9.5 CHC (MITRE)/PIT (FOGG) -107 - 1 UNIT - 3:05pm Pacific
Mitre has been horrible lately. In his last 24.2 IP, he has given up 39 hits and 22 ER. Fogg has faced the Cubs twice already this year, and has a 31.50 ERA against them and has a .500 BAA. Fogg has shown improvement lately, but I'm still not sold on him. Both clubs should be able to score often off of these two starters.
UNDER 8 CIN (ACEVEDO)/MON (DAY) -110 - 1 UNIT - 4:05pm Pacific
Two quality pitchers on the hill in this one. Montreal won't be involved in many high scoring games like the one yesterday. Acevedo is good enough to shut down Montreal's bats, and Day should bounce back after a rough outing in his last start.
ARI (WEBB) -102 over LA (Lima) - 1 UNIT - 7:10pm Pacific
The Dodgers are struggling big time, and I think this is a low number for a slumping team that is putting a crappy pitcher (Lima) on the mound. Webb has been battling control lately, but I'm confident he can pitch pretty well against the Dodgers here.
DET (BONDERMAN) -101 over Bal (Cabrera) - 4:05pm Pacific
Bonderman has been pretty solid this year, but am taking this one because I think Detroit can hit Cabrera. Cabrera looked pretty capable in his first two starts, but was hit hard his last time out. He's got a very good fastball, but can't throw his other pitches for strikes, so a good offense can expose him.

Dr. Bob
Saturday Strong Opinion
MINNESOTA (+2 1/2) 91 L.A. Lakers 88
The Lakers have played considerably worse on the road all season long and that trend has continued in the playoffs. My season ratings favor Minnesota by 1/2 a point in this game and I'd favor the Timberwolves by 1/2 a point using playoff games only (the Lakers are playing better overall in the playoffs, but the disparity between the home and road ratings of these two teams during the playoffs is even larger than in the regular season). There are no significant situations favoring either team in this game, but the Lakers are just 16-32 ATS on the road this season, including 8-22 ATS following a victory. Minnesota has a profitable 57% chance of covering at the current line of +2 1/2 points based solely on the line value and I'll consider the Timberwolves a Strong Opinion in this game.
