      BALTIMORE ORIOLES (20-23) AT DETROIT TIGERS (22-24), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Baltimore - Eric DuBose (3-3, 4.67) Detroit - Jason Johnson (3-5, 5.57)

(Sports Network) - The Baltimore Orioles try to end their extended losing streak tonight, as they visit the Detroit Tigers in the opener of a three-game series at Comerica Park.

The Orioles have dropped seven straight games, including the last three to the New York Yankees.

In Thursday's finale, Hideki Matsui keyed an eight-run fifth with two of his three hits and finished with four runs scored and three runs batted in, as the New York Yankees completed a three-game sweep with an 18-5 rout at Camden Yards.

Miguel Tejada and Rafael Palmeiro hit back-to-back homers for the Orioles, who blew a 3-0 lead. Baltimore has surrendered 68 runs during its losing streak, which is the Orioles' longest since they dropped nine straight from August 24- September 2 of last season.

Baltimore starter Sidney Ponson (3-5) lost his second straight start and fell to 1-5 in his last seven outings. He was tagged for eight runs on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Meanwhile, the Tigers are coming off a 17-7 win in Kansas City on Thursday. Carlos Pena belted a pair of homers as part of his first career six-hit game and drove in five runs, as Detroit salvaged the finale of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium.

Alex Sanchez and Omar Infante both added four hits and two RBI for the Tigers, who snapped a three-game losing streak and tied a franchise record with 27 hits -- a major league season high -- for a nine-inning game.

Ivan Rodriguez drove in three runs in the victory, while Nate Robertson (4-3) allowed two runs on three hits in five innings to win his second straight start.

Eric DuBose tries for his first win in nearly a month, as he takes the ball for the Orioles tonight.

DuBose's last victory came on April 29 against Seattle. Since then the lefthander has posted an 0-1 record in four starts. He pitched well last Friday in Anaheim, surrendering just one run and six hits in seven innings of work.

This will be the 28-year-old DuBose's first career start against the Tigers.

Jason Johnson will counter for the Tigers and try to win his third consecutive start.

Johnson's latest victory came Saturday in an 8-4 victory in Seattle. He surrendered four runs -- three earned -- in 8 1/3 innings. Johnson also struck out seven batters while walking just one.

The 29-year-old had one career start against the Orioles and posted a no decision.

The Tigers split six meetings with the Orioles last season after winning the final three matchups.

      OAKLAND ATHLETICS (26-20) AT CLEVELAND INDIANS (19-26), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Oakland - Barry Zito (3-3, 5.56) Cleveland - Cliff Lee (5-0, 3.21)

(Sports Network) - Two of the best young left-handed pitchers in the American League meet tonight in Cleveland, as Barry Zito takes the ball for Oakland and Cliff Lee counters for the Indians in the opener of a three-game series at Jacobs Field.

Lee, a 25-year-old from Benton, Arkansas, is still undefeated on the season, going 5-0 with a 3.21 earned run average in nine starts.

However, Lee is coming off a no-decision Sunday in Tampa when he allowed four runs in 7 2/3 innings. He struck out six batters and walked three for the Indians.

This will be Lee's first career appearance against the Athletics.

Zito tries for his fourth win of the season, as he takes the mound for the Athletics tonight.

The former AL Cy Young Award winner has pitched decently in May, posting a 4.15 ERA in four starts. However, he has just a 1-0 record in that span.

Zito's latest outing was against Kansas City last Saturday. He surrendered four runs and seven hits in seven innings for the A's, who won the game, 5-4. Zito struck out seven batters and walked two while earning the no decision.

The 26-year-old is 2-0 with a miniscule 1.15 ERA in two career starts against the Indians.

The A's salvaged the finale of a three-game set in Boston with a 15-2 victory on Thursday.

Scott Hatteberg belted a three-run homer and Eric Chavez also drove in three runs to lead Oakland.

Erubiel Durazo tied a career-high with four hits to go with a pair of RBI for Oakland, which pounded out 17 hits in the win. Chavez, one of six Athletics to score at least twice, had a two-run blast and crossed the plate three times.

Mark Mulder (6-2) picked up the win but fell short of his fourth consecutive complete game, leaving after 5 2/3 innings due to a high pitch count. Coming off a three-hit shutout in his last start against Kansas City, Mulder uncharacteristically walked seven batters, a career high, but allowed just two runs on four hits with four strikeouts.

Meanwhile, the Indians snapped a seven-game losing streak with a win over Seattle. Ronnie Belliard and Jody Gerut each had three hits and an RBI, as the Indians defeated the Mariners, 9-5, at Jacobs Field.

Travis Hafner had two RBI and scored twice and Casey Blake also drove in a pair for the Indians, who received a balanced attack in salvaging the finale of this three-game set. All but one starter had at least one hit, while six of the nine drove in runs.

Jake Westbrook (4-2) needed to throw just five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, to earn the victory. Four other Cleveland relievers combined to toss one-hit, one-run ball over the final four innings.

The A's took six of nine from Cleveland last season and a 11-3 in the last 14 meetings against the Indians.

SEATTLE MARINERS (17-29) AT BOSTON RED SOX (29-17), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Seattle - Joel Pineiro (1-5, 5.43) Boston - Pedro Martinez (4-3, 3.6

(Sports Network) - Pedro Martinez tries to earn his first victory in over three weeks, as he toes the rubber for the Boston Red Sox in tonight's opener of a three-game series against the visiting Seattle Mariners.

Martinez's last victory came on May 6 in Cleveland. In three starts since then, the three-time Cy Young Award winner has gone 0-1 with a 3.15 earned run average.

The righthander pitched six solid innings against the Blue Jays last Saturday, allowing two runs and five hits. Martinez also struck out seven batters while walking only one.

Martinez has unbelievable career stats against the Mariners, posting a 12-0 record and 1.00 ERA in 12 games (11 starts).

The Mariners send Joel Pineiro to the mound tonight and hope the young righthander can continue his recent pitching performances.

Pineiro was 1-3 with an 8.26 earned run average in April, but has posted a 2.57 ERA in four starts this month. However, the native of Rio Padres, Puerto Rico has managed just an 0-2 record in May.

Pineiro tosses seven strong innings in a no decision against Detroit on Saturday. He allowed one run and five hits, while striking out seven batters and walking two.

The 25-year-old is 2-2 with a 4.56 ERA in four career starts against the Red Sox.

The Red Sox had their five-game winning streak halted on Thursday, as Oakland pounded out a 15-2 win at Fenway Park. Scott Hatteberg belted a three-run homer and Eric Chavez also drove in three runs for the Athletics.

Boston starter Bronson Arroyo (2-2) got the loss after getting shelled for nine runs -- six earned -- on seven hits and a pair of walks in only 3 1/3 innings or work.

The 13-run setback was the worst for the Red Sox since a 22-1 defeat at the hands of the New York Yankees on June 22, 2000.

Pokey Reese and Doug Mirabelli drove in runs for the Red Sox.

The Mariners, meanwhile, were handed a 9-5 setback by the Cleveland Indians. Ronnie Belliard and Jody Gerut each had three hits and an RBI to deny Seattle a three-game sweep.

Edgar Martinez ended 3-for-5 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored for Seattle. The Mariners were trying for their first sweep at Cleveland since May 14-16, 1991.

The Red Sox went 5-2 against Seattle last season and won the final four games in the series.

TEXAS RANGERS (26-20) AT TORONTO BLUE JAYS (20-27), 7:05 P.M.

      Probable Starting Pitchers: Texas - R.A. Dickey (4-4. 5.26) Toronto - Ted Lilly (2-2, 5.02)

(Sports Network) - R.A. Dickey tries to avoid losing his fourth straight start, as he takes the ball for the Texas Rangers tonight in the opener of a three-game series in Toronto.

Dickey hasn't won since May 2 against Boston and is 0-3 with an 8.38 earned run average in his last four starts.

The 29-year-old righthander's latest defeat came Sunday against the Yankees, as he surrendered four runs and eight hits in five innings of work.

Dickey is 1-0 with a 3.72 ERA in three games (one start) against the Blue Jays.

Ted Lilly aims for his first victory in nearly a month when he takes the mound for the Blue Jays tonight.

Lilly's last win came against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field on May 1. Since then, he has posted four consecutive no decisions.

The 28-year-old lefthander's latest outing came in Boston last Saturday. Lilly surrendered just two runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. He also struck out 10 batters and walked two in Toronto's 5-2 loss.

Lilly is 2-1 with a 3.72 ERA in seven career games (six starts) against the Rangers.

The Blue Jays are coming off a three-game sweep of the Anaheim Angels on Thursday. Roy Halladay came within one out of throwing a three-hit shutout, as Toronto posted a 3-2 victory in Thursday's finale at SkyDome.

Halladay (5-4) retired 19 consecutive batters before surrendering a pair of runs in the ninth inning. He was charged with two unearned runs on four hits and two walks, with seven strikeouts.

Jason Frasor relieved Halladay with two outs in the ninth and threw one pitch for his second save.

The Blue Jays scored all three of their runs in the seventh inning on Reed Johnson's RBI single and Frank Menechino's two-run triple. They have won six straight against the Angels.

Meanwhile, the Rangers were dealt a 9-0 loss in Thursday's finale in Chicago. Jose Valentin smacked a three-run homer to lift the White Sox.

Texas starter Ryan Drese (2-2) is now winless in four starts after getting pounded for seven runs on eight hits in just 4 1/3 innings. He walked one and fanned one.

Eric Young went 4-for-4 for the Rangers, losers in three of their last four.

Texas won five of nine meetings with the Blue Jays last season and are 13-5 against Toronto since the start of the 2002 campaign.

NEW YORK YANKEES (28-1 AT TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS (16-29), 7:15 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: New York - Javier Vazquez (4-4, 3.67) Tampa Bay - Doug Waechter (2-4, 3.93)

(Sports Network) - Javier Vazquez will try to win back-to-back games for the first time this season when the New York Yankees start a three-game series tonight with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Tropicana Field.

Vazquez, who was acquired this past offseason from Montreal for Nick Johnson and Juan Rivera, stopped a three-start winless streak on Sunday, as he tamed the Texas Rangers to improve to 4-4 on the year. The 27-year-old righthander allowed three runs and six hits over six innings in the victory.

It was just the second time in his nine starts this season, that his high- powered club had scored more than four runs for him.

Vazquez, who has pitched to a 3.67 earned run average this season, will be making his fourth start against the Devil Rays and is 1-0 against them with a 4.58 ERA.

Run support might not be much of an issue for Vazquez tonight, as the Yankees bats have all started to come around. On Thursday, Hideki Matsui keyed an eight-run fifth with two of his three hits and finished with four runs scored and three runs batted in, as New York completed a three-game bludgeoning of the Baltimore Orioles with an 18-5 rout at Camden Yards.

Enrique Wilson homered and finished with four runs batted in for the Yankees, who outscored the Orioles 41-17 in the three games. Tony Clark added three hits, three runs scored and four RBI, while Derek Jeter contributed three hits and two RBI. Jeter finished the series 7-for-15 and raised his average to .211.

Alex Rodriguez chipped in his 12th home run of the season and has reached base safely in a major league season-high 35 straight games. Wilson, meanwhile, has driven in 14 runs in his last six games.

Jose Contreras (2-2) was the beneficiary of the Yankee offensive outburst and pitched six innings to earn the win. He gave up three runs on eight hits, walked four and struck out four.

Every Yankee starter had a hit and scored a run. New York, which finished with a season-high 21 hits, has won four in a row and is 6-3 on a season-long 12- game road trip that will conclude this weekend. The Yanks are 15-11 away from home this season.

Tampa also comes into tonight's tilt on a high note after taking two of three from the Minnesota Twins, culminating with Thursday's 5-4 win. Rocco Baldelli's three-run homer paced the D-Rays to the win, as he extended his hitting streak to eight games.

Carl Crawford went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. He also swiped his league-leading 23rd base in the win, Tampa's sixth in its last seven tries.

Tampa Bay starter Jason Standridge struggled on the day, allowing four runs on five hits with two strikeouts in three innings, but the bullpen was able to shut down the Twins the rest of the way. John Halama (1-1), Jorge Sosa and Danys Baez combined to pitch six shutout innings of two-hit ball in relief of Standridge.

Halama worked 3 1/3 innings to record his first win of the season and Baez pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

Getting the call tonight for Tampa will be righthander Doug Waechter, who is 2-4 on the season with a 3.93 ERA. In his last outing on Saturday against the Cleveland Indians, Waechter earned the win by allowing three runs and four hits over 6 1/3 frames.

Waechter has faced the Yankees twice in his career and is 0-1 against them with a 3.00 ERA.

Tampa, in the midst of a 12-game homestand, is 13-12 at home this season.

Mariano Rivera needs one save to become the 18th pitcher in major league history and the first Yankee to reach 300 saves. He would also become only the fourth pitcher in big league annals to record 300 saves for one team, joining Trevor Hoffman for San Diego, Dennis Eckersley for Oakland, and Jeff Montgomery for Kansas City.

Yankee centerfielder Bernie Williams needs 14 hits to become the seventh Yankee to reach 2,000. Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Don Mattingly, and Yogi Berra are also on that list.

This is a series traditionally dominated by the Yankees, as they have won 17 of the last 24 meetings, including 12 of the last 15 encounters. New York has also won nine of its last 12 and 15 of its last 21 in St. Petersburg.

ANAHEIM ANGELS (29-10) AT CHICAGO WHITE SOX (27-19), 8:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Anaheim - Kelvim Escobar (3-2, 4.43) Chicago - Jon Garland (4-2, 4.09)

(Sports Network) - A battle of division leaders is on tap tonight at U.S. Cellular Field, as the Anaheim Angels and Chicago White Sox begin a three-game set in the Windy City.

Anaheim leads the American League West by 2 1/2 games over Oakland and Texas, while the White Sox are clinging to a slim one-game lead over the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central.

The Angels, who are tied with the Boston Red Sox for the best record in baseball, come into this weekend's series reeling after getting swept by the Toronto Blue Jays, culminating with Thursday's 3-2 setback.

Jarrod Washburn (7-2) was charged with all three runs and failed in his bid to become the first eight-game winner in the majors this season. He yielded just three hits before Toronto scored all three of its runs in the seventh, his last inning. Washburn surrendered eight hits and three walks overall.

David Eckstein extended his hitting streak to 12 games for the Angels, who have yet to lose four in a row this season.

Taking the hill tonight for the Halos will be righthander Kelvim Escobar, who is coming off a solid effort in his last outing on Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles. In that contest the 28-year-old hurler allowed a pair of runs on five hits over seven innings to improve to 3-2 on the year, while lowering his earned run average 4.43.

Escobar has struggled mightily against the White Sox in his career, posting a miserable 1-8 mark in 15 games, seven starts, with a 7.55 ERA and one save.

Chicago will counter with righty Jon Garland, who has won his last two starts and three of his last four decisions. On Sunday against the Minnesota Twins, the 24-year-old Garland yielded six runs and 10 hits in seven innings and raised his mark to 4-2.

Garland, who has pitched to a 4.09 ERA this season, is 2-4 lifetime against the Angels with a 5.01 ERA in six starts.

On Thursday, Jose Valentin smacked a three-run homer in the first inning and that was all Mark Buehrle needed, as the White Sox blanked the Texas Rangers, 9-0, to take the rubber match of the series at U.S. Cellular Field.

Buehrle (5-1) tossed seven shutout innings to extend his winning streak to four games.

Juan Uribe belted two solo home runs to help Chicago to its third win in four contests. He finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while Carlos Lee was 2- for-2 with a pair of runs scored to extend his hit streak to 14 games.

Chicago is 15-9 at home this season, while the Angels are 14-11 away from home this season.

The White Sox took four of their seven matchups with Anaheim last season, but have dropped 15 of the last 25 meetings. The Angels dropped all three contests in Chicago last year.

MINNESOTA TWINS (26-20) AT KANSAS CITY ROYALS (15-29), 8:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Minnesota - Brad Radke (4-2, 3.77) Kansas City - Zack Greinke (0-0, 3.60)

(Sports Network) - The fans at Kauffman Stadium will get their first taste of young Zack Greinke this evening when the Royals begin a three-game series with the Minnesota Twins.

The 20-year-old Greinke, considered the organization's best pitching prospect since Bret Saberhagen in 1984, made the first start of his major league career on Saturday in Oakland and allowed two runs and five hits over five innings. However, he did not factor in the decision of his team's 5-4, 11- inning loss.

The sixth overall pick in the 2002 draft, Greinke compiled a 16-5 record with a 2.15 earned run average in 35 career minor leagues games and walked just 27 in 180 innings.

Greinke will be opposed by veteran righthander Brad Radke, who has won his last two decisions. On Saturday against the Chicago White Sox, the 31-year-old hurler allowed a run on six hits over six frames to improve to 4-2 on the year. He also struck out five without walking a batter, as he lowered his ERA to 3.77.

Radke, who has not lost in his last five starts, has faced the Royals 24 times in his career and is 8-8 against them with a 4.40 ERA.

The Twins come into tonight's opener after dropping two of three to the lowly Tampa Bay Devil Rays, including Thursday's 5-4 setback. Jacque Jones smacked a three-run homer in defeat, while Corey Koskie added a solo shot, as Minnesota fell for the fifth time in its last seven tries.

Twins starter Carlos Silva (5-3) absorbed the loss, allowing five runs -- four earned -- on 11 hits with one strikeout in six innings. Silva has cooled off of late, dropping his last three starts after opening the season by winning his first five decisions.

Kansas City, meanwhile, was hammered by the Detroit Tigers, 17-7 in the finale of their three-game affair on Thursday, as the Royals allowed a franchise record 27 hits. Ken Harvey posted three hits, including a three-run homer, and drove in four runs for the Royals, who had a two-game winning streak stopped and have lost 13 of their last 20.

Joe Randa and Mike Sweeney both added two hits.

Starter Brian Anderson (1-7), who extended his career-long losing streak to seven starts, became the American League's first seven-game loser.

Kansas City 10-11 at home this season, while the Twins have posted a 12-12 mark on the road this year.

Minnesota took five of its six meetings with the Royals last season and was 2-1 in KC. The Twins are also 19-12 in their last 31 visits to Kauffman Stadium.

CHICAGO CUBS (25-20) AT PITTSBURGH PIRATES (20-22), 5:05 P.M. (DH)

        Probable Starting Pitchers: Chicago - Matt Clement (6-3, 2.69) Glendon Rusch (2-0, 3.66) Pittsburgh - Kip Wells (3-4, 3.86) Oliver Perez (3-2, 2.96)

(Sports Network) - The Chicago Cubs will attempt to snap a two-game skid this evening, when they open up a four-game set with a doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.

These teams were forced to extend this series because of a rescheduled game from April 22. Pittsburgh has had an amazing six games postponed due to inclement weather this season.

Chicago has lost four of its last six overall, including Wednesday's 7-3 defeat to the Houston Astros. Greg Maddux (3-4) suffered the loss after getting tagged for five runs on nine hits and one walk in just five frames.

Todd Hollandsworth belted a two-run homer for the Cubs, while Aramis Ramirez and Michael Barrett tallied two hits apiece.

Sammy Sosa remains on the disabled list due to back spasms. The Cubs are 4-5 without Sosa in the lineup.

The Cubs remain just one game behind the Cincinnati Reds for first place in the National League Central.

Chicago will send 29-year-old righthander Matt Clement to the hill in the early game. Clement has split his last four starts, including a victory over St. Louis last Sunday. The hurler surrendered three hits and three runs through seven innings, while fanning six and walking three in the win. Clement allowed a season-high two homers.

Clement was excellent in his only other 2004 start against the Pirates, allowing just two hits through six innings of a win on April 14. The hurler struck out seven and walked three in the victory. For his career, Clement is 7-6 with a 4.53 ERA in 17 games versus Pittsburgh.

Taking the ball for the Cubs in the nightcap will be lefthander Glendon Rusch. He has won both of his decisions in five outings this season, including a 1-0 mark over two starts since joining the rotation. Last time on the hill, Saturday versus St. Louis, Rusch allowed six hits and a run over 7 2/3 innings, while fanning nine and walking one.

Rusch has been unsuccessful against the Pirates in his career, posting a 1-7 record with 5.17 ERA in 12 games.

Pittsburgh will turn to 27-year-old righthander Kip Wells in the opener. Wells is unbeaten (1-0) over his last three starts, including a no-decision against Milwaukee last Sunday. The Houston, TX native pitched well against the Brewers, allowing four hits and a run over seven frames. Wells fanned eight and walked two in the victory.

Wells has been terrific versus the Cubs in his career, posting a 3-0 record with a razor thin 1.91 ERA in nine games. This will be his first start of the year against Chicago.

The Pirates will pin their hopes on 22-year-old lefty Oliver Perez in the back end of the double-dip. Perez has lost two of his last three starts, including a defeat to his former team San Diego last week. The youngster left after three innings, giving up two hits and four runs while walking four. Perez threw 77 pitches in his short time on the hill.

Perez is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA in three career games versus Chicago.

The Pirates are coming off a rain-shortened set with St. Louis, in which they split a pair of games. Pittsburgh ended the series on a bad note Thursday, falling 6-3 at Busch Stadium.

Ryan Vogelsong (1-4) took the loss after surrendering six runs and five hits over five innings of work. The righty, who also had an RBI double, walked five and fanned five batters. Vogelsong is 0-4 in his last eight starts.

Abraham Nunez and Tike Redman each had an RBI for the Pirates, who lost for just the second time in their last five contests. Pittsburgh first baseman Daryle Ward, who hit for the cycle and tied a career-high with six RBI in Wednesday night's win, went 1-for-4 in this contest.

The Pirates, who would have gotten to .500 with a win, have not had a .500 record this late in a season since September 1, 1999 when the club was 67-67.

Chicago has won four of five meetings between these teams this season, including a 2-0 mark at PNC Park. The Cubs are 34-24 against the Pirates since the start of the 2001 campaign.

The Cubs are 12-11 on the road this season, while Pittsburgh is just 6-13 in its friendly confines.

        ATLANTA BRAVES (23-23) AT PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (25-20), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Atlanta - Mike Hampton (1-5, 5.64) Philadelphia - Randy Wolf (2-3, 3.16)

(Sports Network) - Atlanta lefthander Mike Hampton lost his first five decisions of the season, but now he'll try to win his second consecutive start tonight as the Braves resume a four-game series versus the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

Hampton was off to the worst start of his career, at 0-5 over his first eight outings. However, he finally broke into the win column in a big way in a 5-1 victory over the Dodgers on Sunday. Hampton threw six scoreless innings and pitched out of two bases-loaded jams. The 31-year-old also homered and now has 13 in his career, the most among active pitchers.

Over his career, Hampton has a 6-7 record with a 3.77 ERA versus the Phillies. He hasn't beaten Philadelphia since September 23, 2000 when he pitched for the Mets.

The Braves have won six of their last eight games and are back to .500 for the first time since May 5 (13-13). Their last time above the even mark was May 4 following a win over the Padres.

Last night, Andruw Jones belted a grand slam and Jaret Wright pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning, leading the Braves to a 6-1 victory. J.D. Drew had two hits and an RBI, while Chipper Jones went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and scored once. Rafael Furcal contributed two hits and a run scored.

Wright got the win after allowing six hits and a run over 7 1/3 innings.

Kevin Millwood fell to 0-5 against his former team as he was battered for six hits and six runs with a career-high six walks in only four innings. Chase Utley went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

The Phillies lost for just the third time in nine games and fell out of first place in the NL East, a game behind the Florida Marlins.

Randy Wolf missed his previous start for the Phillies because of tendinitis in his pitching elbow. Tonight he returns to the mound hoping to snap nearly a month-long winless string. Wolf has gone 0-2 over his last three starts and in his previous outing, May 17 at Colorado, he didn't get a decision after allowing seven hits and two runs over 6 1/3 innings. He also had a season-high eight strikeouts.

Wolf is 4-7 lifetime in 16 games (14 starts) against the Braves. That includes an 0-3 mark in five home games.

The Braves have captured six of their last eight on the road.

This marks the first series between the Braves and Phillies this season. The clubs will play a four-game set at Atlanta next weekend. The Phillies went 10-9 last year versus Atlanta for their first season series win over the Braves since 1991.

        CINCINNATI REDS (27-20) AT MONTREAL EXPOS (15-31), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Cincinnati - Cory Lidle (3-4, 4.52) Montreal - Claudio Vargas (3-2, 4.47)

(Sports Network) - The NL Central-leading Cincinnati Reds will try to sidestep their first three-game losing streak since early May tonight when they begin a three-contest set against the Montreal Expos at Olympic Stadium.

Cincinnati has now dropped two consecutive games on the heels of a season-high seven-game winning streak. The Reds have managed just two runs over their last two tilts, including Thursday's 5-2 defeat to the Florida Marlins.

Barry Larkin and Sean Casey each had an RBI for the Reds in the losing effort. Casey, who leads the league in hitting with a .379 average, and Juan Castro each tallied two hits in the contest. Casey has tallied two or more hits in over half of his starts this season (22 multi-hit games in 44 starts).

Larkin slapped a double in the game, giving him 700 extra-base hits for his career. The shortstop joined Pete Rose (868) and ****** Bench (794) as the only Reds to record at least 700 extra-base hits.

Aaron Harang (4-2) took the loss after permitting five runs and nine hits over 4 1/3 innings. The righthander fanned two and walked two.

The Reds will send 32-year-old righthander Cory Lidle to the mound tonight. Lidle snapped a three-start skid last Sunday, as he tossed a shutout of the Houston Astros. The twirler scattered six hits in the win, while fanning four and walking two.

Lidle has made four career appearances against the Expos, going 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA. The Hollywood, CA native has surrendered six hits and two runs through 11 innings of action versus Montreal.

Toeing the rubber for the Expos tonight will be 25-year-old righthander Claudio Vargas. Vargas has been solid (2-1) over his last four starts, including a no-decision against San Francisco last Saturday. In that game, Vargas allowed just four hits and two runs over seven innings. He struck out five and walked two in the contest.

Vargas has faced the Reds one other time in his career, giving up a single hit over three innings of work.

Montreal is struggling with six losses in its last seven games. The Expos' woes continued Wednesday, as it dropped a 6-1 decision to the Atlanta Braves at Olympic Stadium.

In front of just 4,544 patrons, the Expos managed only five hits. Jose Vidro knocked in Montreal's only run in the contest. Vidro picked up his first RBI since May 9.

Livan Hernandez (3-4) took the loss in seven innings of work, surrendering four runs on 10 hits and a walk. He fanned three.

Montreal has actually won this series in two consecutive seasons, going 9-3 overall. The Expos have taken their last three meetings with Cincinnati at Olympic Stadium, but the Reds have won 16 of their last 24 games north of the border.

NEW YORK METS (23-23) AT FLORIDA MARLINS (27-20), 7:35 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: New York - Tom Glavine (6-2, 2.13) Florida - Dontrelle Willis (4-3, 4.3

(Sports Network) - Tom Glavine will try to follow up his incredible one-hit wonder from Sunday when he takes the mound for the New York Mets tonight in the opener of a three-game series versus the Florida Marlins at Pro Player Stadium.

The 38-year-old lefthander took a perfect game into the seventh inning against the Rockies at Shea Stadium in his previous start, striking out eight with one walk en route to the 53rd complete game of his career and his first-ever one- hitter. The last time Glavine pitched a shutout was on May 22, 2002 with Atlanta. The two-time Cy Young Award winner has six career two-hitters.

The Mets have never had a pitcher throw a no-hitter and Glavine went 7 2/3 innings before allowing his only hit -- a double to Kit Pellow. It was the 27th one-hitter thrown in franchise history.

Glavine is 2-0 over his last three starts. Additionally, he is 15-13 with a 3.64 ERA in 33 career appearances against the Marlins. At Pro Player Stadium, Glavine is 6-10 with a 4.43 ERA in 17 career starts.

The New York Mets had a four-game winning streak broken Wednesday night with a 7-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies at Shea Stadium. Mike Piazza drove in two runs on two hits last night to extend his hit streak to 12 games for the Mets. New York led 3-0, but the Phillies reached the scoreboard in the seventh inning with six runs on only three hits and two costly New York errors and they never looked back.

The Marlins are back in first place in the NL East, one game ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies. Florida has won six of its last eight games, including yesterday's 5-2 triumph at Cincinnati. Brad Penny allowed six hits over eight stellar innings, while Alex Gonzalez had two hits and drove in two runs.

Armando Benitez threw the final inning for his 18th save. Benitez is tied with Baltimore's Rodrigo Lopez for the lowest ERA in the majors at 0.33. Benitez has not allowed an earned run in his last 26 2/3 innings, a new Marlins relief record. The last earned run he allowed came on Opening Day, a solo homer by Montreal's Jose Vidro. Opposing batters are hitless in their last 30 plate appearances against Benitez.

Southpaw Dontrelle Willis will get his 10th start of the season tonight for Florida. He has never lost to the Mets, going 3-0 with a 0.43 ERA (1 ER, 21 IP) against them. Speaking of one-hitters, in his first start against New York, June 16 last year, Willis tossed a complete-game one-hitter, walking one and fanning eight. Willis was the first Marlins rookie to toss a one-hitter and the first rookie since St. Louis' Bud Smith to toss one.

Since starting the season 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA over his first three starts, Willis has gone 1-3 with a 7.20 ERA over six outings. He has dropped his last two starts. On Sunday against Arizona he allowed four runs on nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts over five innings. Willis has dropped each of his last two starts, both at home, allowing nine earned runs on 20 hits for a 9.00 ERA.

Mets outfielder Mike Cameron is mired in a 3-for-35 slump.

This is the first series between the teams this year. Florida went 12-7 versus New York last season, winning six of the final seven meetings.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (24-22) AT HOUSTON ASTROS (26-20), 8:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: St. Louis - Chris Carpenter (5-1, 3.93) Houston - Roger Clemens (7-0, 2.51)

(Sports Network) - Houston fireballer Roger Clemens will try to become the majors' first eight-game winner tonight, when he leads the Astros against the St. Louis Cardinals at Minute Maid Park in the first of a three-game set.

Clemens, who is knotted with Kenny Rogers, Paul Wilson and Jarrod Washburn for the league-lead in wins this year, has actually gone back-to-back starts without a decision. Last time on the hill, Clemens was roughed up for nine hits and six runs over five innings by Cincinnati a week ago. He struck out eight and walked four in the contest.

Baseball's only six-time Cy Young Award winner, Clemens has won his last 11 regular season decisions dating back to last year. The 41-year-old righthander hasn't lost since September 6 against Boston and a win tonight would be Clemens' 318th of his career, tying him with Phil Niekro for 14th place on the all-time list.

Clemens already holds the Astros franchise record for wins in consecutive starts to begin a season. He is the third Astro to start a season 7-0 and the first since Juan Agosto started a club-record 10-0 in 1988. Jim Ray also started 7-0 in 1972.

Clemens won his first outing of the year against St. Louis, allowing two hits and a run over 6 2/3 innings on April 13. For his career, Clemens 2-0 with a 2.03 ERA versus the Cardinals.

St. Louis will counter with 29-year-old righthander Chris Carpenter on the mound. Carpenter has won four straight starts, including a victory over the Chicago Cubs last Friday. The former teammate of Clemens' in Toronto allowed eight hits and three runs over six innings, while fanning four and not walking anyone.

Carpenter lost his first career outing against the Astros on April 14, allowing six hits and five runs -- four earned -- over five innings.

Houston has won two straight on the heels of a five-game skid, including Wednesday's 7-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Jeff Bagwell hit a two-run homer and finished with two hits and three RBI to pace the Astros to the win.

Jeff Kent and Lance Berkman added solo shots for the Astros, while Adam Everett, Brad Ausmus and Richard Hidalgo tallied two hits apiece. Berkman's homer Wednesday was the 138th of his career, tying Jose Cruz for seventh on the Astros' all-time career list.

Everett extended his career-long hitting streak to nine games. Kent extended his streak to 12 games, a season high. Kent is hitting .364 (16-for-44) during the streak.

Brad Lidge (1-3) earned his first win of the season in a perfect inning in which he struck out the side. Houston lost its crafty lefthander Andy Pettitte in the top of the fourth inning due to discomfort in his forearm. He is listed as day-to-day.

Houston resides just a half-game behind first place Cincinnati in the NL Central, while St. Louis is 2 1/2 contests off the pace in fourth place. The Cardinals halted a three-game skid with a 6-3 victory over Pittsburgh Thursday.

Scott Rolen belted a three-run homer and ended with four RBI to lead the Cardinals to the win. Albert Pujols and Ray Lankford also drove in a run for the Cardinals. Rolen has a major league-best 49 RBI this year.

Jeff Suppan (4-4) earned the win after allowing three runs and seven hits over six innings. The veteran righthander, who faced his former team for the first time, struck out five and walked two.

These teams have split six meetings this season with the road team taking each contest. Most recently, St. Louis recorded a three-game sweep of Houston at Minute Maid Park from April 20-22. Houston still owns a 14-10 advantage in this set since the start of last season.

The Astros are 14-11 at home this year, while St. Louis owns a 13-8 road mark.

SAN DIEGO PADRES (26-21) AT MILWAUKEE BREWERS (24-21), 8:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Diego - Brian Lawrence (6-3, 4.80) Milwaukee - Doug Davis (3-3, 3.65)

(Sports Network) - The San Diego Padres are progressing way ahead of last year's pace when the club lost 98 games. Since 1999, the Padres have finished not better than fourth in the NL West, but as of today they're on top of the division, finally.

The Dodgers had shared or been in first place alone every day since April 14, but that changed yesterday as Los Angeles lost at Milwaukee and the Padres pulled out a 4-3 victory in 10 innings over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

That put San Diego a game ahead of LA as the Padres prepare to battle the Brewers tonight in the opener of a three-game series at Miller Park. The Padres have won nine series this season. Last year, they didn't register their ninth series victory until July 31.

Brian Lawrence had a four-start winning streak broken in his last appearance and he'll take the mound tonight for San Diego. Pitching on three days rest for the first time in his career, the righthander took the loss Sunday at Philadelphia, allowing four runs on five hits with four walks in five innings. He is 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA lifetime against Milwaukee.

Yesterday, Khalil Greene tied the game with a two-run homer in the ninth inning and Phil Nevin put San Diego ahead to stay with a sacrifice fly in the 10th. Greene finished with three RBI for the Padres, who took two of the three games in the series. San Diego is 5-4 on its 12-game road trip.

The Brewers have captured five of their last seven contests, including yesterday's 3-1 triumph over the Dodgers. Scott Podsednik homered and the Brewers took advantage of a first inning error by Cesar Izturis to score their other two runs. Ben Sheets struck out eight over seven innings for the win.

Doug Davis gets the start for Milwaukee tonight. The lefthander is 0-1 over his last two outings and he's coming off a no-decision at Pittsburgh on Sunday despite throwing six shutout innings. He has won both of his career starts versus San Diego, but hasn't faced the Padres since July 7, 2001 when he was a member of the Texas Rangers.

Davis has not allowed a home run over his last eight starts spanning 51 innings.

The Brewers are 10-2 versus the Padres since the start of the 2002 season.

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (17-30) AT LOS ANGELES DODGERS (24-21), 10:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Arizona - Randy Johnson (5-4, 2.44) Los Angeles - Wilson Alvarez (2-1, 3.27)

(Sports Network) - Randy Johnson has looked spectacular in his last two starts and tonight he'll try to extend his winning streak as the Arizona Diamondbacks begin a three-game series versus the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

Johnson threw a perfect game on May 18 at Atlanta and the Arizona lefthander followed that on Sunday with seven solid innings in a 4-3 road win over the Marlins. In that game, Johnson allowed two runs on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts. The Big Unit has gone 4-2 in his last six starts allowing only six earned runs in 41 1/3 innings for a 1.31 ERA, limiting opposing hitters to a .121 batting average (17-for-140) with six walks and 54 strikeouts.

Johnson is approaching another milestone in his Hall of Fame career. He is 43 strikeouts shy of 4,000.

During his career, Johnson has logged a 6-5 mark with a 2.87 ERA in 18 starts against the Dodgers, but last season he went 0-2 in three starts versus them. However, he is 5-0 with a 2.01 ERA in nine lifetime starts at Dodger Stadium.

The Diamondbacks suffered a 5-4 loss in 10 innings at San Francisco last night when Damon Minor singled off Jose Valverde to drive in Barry Bonds. Valverde's throwing error put Bonds into scoring position.

Danny Bautista tied the game with a two-out homer in the ninth inning for Arizona, which has lost four in a row and seven of eight games. Steve Finley had two hits and scored twice.

The Dodgers had shared or been alone in first place in the NL West since April 14, but now they are a game behind the San Diego Padres. That's because the Dodgers lost 3-1 at Milwaukee yesterday, while San Diego posted a victory at Colorado.

Cesar Izturis' throwing error allowed Milwaukee to score two first inning runs and the Dodgers were dealt their 11th loss in 13 games. Milton Bradley went 2- for-4 with a homer, while Izturis had two hits.

Lefty Wilson Alvarez will be on the mound tonight for the Dodgers. He is 0-1 over his last two outings and most recently suffered a loss at Atlanta on Sunday. Over his last two starts he has been rocked for 15 hits, including six homers, and 11 runs in only 10 innings.

The only career start for Alvarez against Arizona came September 18 last year when he threw seven scoreless innings to get a 2-0 win at Dodger Stadium.

The Diamondbacks won 10 of the 19 meetings last season. This series has been traditionally tight as Arizona is 29-28 versus LA since the start of the 2001 season.

COLORADO ROCKIES (18-2 AT SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (22-24), 10:15 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Colorado - Shawn Estes (6-3, 6.32) San Francisco - Brett Tomko (1-3, 5.51)

(Sports Network) - Colorado hurler Shawn Estes will face his former team for the first time ever at SBC Park tonight, when he anchors the Rockies against the San Francisco Giants in the first of a three-game set.

Estes spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Giants before being traded in December of 2001. The lefthander went 64-50 in his stint with the Giants. Since leaving San Francisco, Estes has spent time with four different teams in three years, pitching also for Cincinnati, the Mets and Cubs.

Estes has split his last four starts, including a loss to the Mets last Sunday. The southpaw allowed seven hits and four runs over 5 2/3 innings, while walking and striking out four in the defeat. Estes still leads the Rockies in wins (six) despite a sizeable 6.32 ERA.

Estes has faced the Giants just one other time in his career, giving up six hits and four runs over five innings in a defeat at Shea Stadium on May 8,2002. He is 16-6 with a 3.18 ERA in 29 starts at SBC Park.

Heading to the mound for the Giants tonight will be righthander Brett Tomko. Tomko is 0-2 over his last four starts and hasn't won since April 28, including a no-decision against Montreal last Friday. The righthander allowed six hits and three runs -- one earned -- through 5 2/3 innings. Tomko struck out two and walked one in the contest.

Tomko will be facing the Rockies for the first time this season. In his career, Tomko has tallied a 3-4 record with a 3.62 ERA in nine games versus Colorado.

San Francisco is on fire with six consecutive victories after sweeping the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Giants continued their red hot play Thursday, posting a 5-4 win in 10 innings over the Diamondbacks.

Barry Bonds was intentionally walked with one out in the 10th inning and scored the game-winning run on Damon Minor's single. Bonds, who was intentionally walked three times in the game, advanced to second base on Jose Valverde's errant pickoff attempt to first.

Jeffrey Hammonds then drew a walk before Minor stroked a first-pitch offering through the right side of the infield to score Bonds and hand the Giants the win.

Minor, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Fresno on Tuesday, ended 2- for-3 with two walks and a run scored. He got his first hits since 2002.

Tyler Walker (4-0) picked up the win with a perfect 10th inning. Giants starter Dustin Hermanson left with the lead in the sixth after yielding three runs -- two earned -- in 5 2/3 innings.

The Rockies are headed in the opposite direction as San Francisco, as they have dropped seven of their last eight games. Colorado's recent woes continued Thursday with a 4-3 loss in 10 frames at the hands of the San Diego Padres.

Jeromy Burnitz homered for the Rockies, who managed just four hits in the defeat.

Vladimir Nunez (3-3) suffered the loss after giving up the game-winning run. Aaron Cook, Colorado's starter, surrendered one run on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Colorado first baseman Todd Helton missed his sixth straight start with a strained oblique muscle. Helton is expected to return either tonight or Saturday.

This is the first series of the season between these clubs. San Francisco is 33-24 against the Rockies since 2001, including a 20-9 record at SBC Park.
