DETROIT TIGERS (21-24) AT KANSAS CITY ROYALS (15-28), 2:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Detroit - Nate Robertson (3-3, 4.56) Kansas City - Brian Anderson (1-6, 7.41)

(Sports Network) - Struggling Kansas City lefthander Brian Anderson will attempt to stop a career-worst six-start losing streak today when the Royals shoot for a sweep of the Detroit Tigers at Kauffman Stadium.

Anderson hasn't won since April 20 against Cleveland, including a defeat to Oakland last week. The southpaw was rocked for eight hits and six runs -- five earned -- over three innings by the A's. Anderson, who walked three and struck out one, allowed a pair of homers. Over his last four starts, Anderson has been tagged for eight long balls.

Anderson has been outstanding against the Tigers in his career, posting a 5-0 mark with a 3.43 ERA in six games.

Detroit will counter with lefty Nate Robertson on the hill this afternoon. Robertson has won two of his last three outings, including a win over Seattle last week. The 26-year-old surrendered just six hits over seven innings, while fanning three and walking two.

Robertson has made one career appearance against the Royals, allowing seven hits and six runs over 2 1/3 innings. The lefthander walked four and struck out one.

The Royals registered a 7-3 victory over the Tigers on Wednesday. Matt Stairs and Mike Sweeney belted two-run homers in the winning effort. Sweeney finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored for the Royals. The Royals won for just the sixth time in 18 games, but could pick up their first sweep of the season with a win today.

Darrell May pitched 7 2/3 solid innings for the win. May (2-6) yielded three runs on 10 hits and a walk, striking out two. But he allowed a leadoff baserunner in six of the first seven innings.

Jeremy Affeldt got two outs in the ninth to record his second save.

Detroit starter Gary Knotts (1-1) took the loss in five innings of work. He surrendered five runs -- three earned -- on eight hits and a walk, fanning five.

Carlos Guillen belted a solo homer for the Tigers, losers of three straight. Alex Sanchez and Rondell White had three hits apiece in the loss. Sanchez laid down his major league-leading 18th bunt single in the third and added his 19th in the ninth.

The Tigers struggled against Kansas City last year, going 5-14. Since the start of the 2001 season, the Tigers are 7-24 in games played at Kauffman Stadium.

MINNESOTA TWINS (26-19) AT TAMPA BAY DEVIL RAYS (15-29), 2:15 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Minnesota - Carlos Silva (5-2, 4.39) Tampa Bay - Jason Standridge (0-0, 0.00)

(Sports Network) - Carlos Silva tries to get back on the winning track this afternoon when the Minnesota Twins play the rubber match of their three-game set with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Tropicana Field.

Silva, who will be making his first appearance against the D-Rays, was one of the league's biggest surprises, as he came out of the gates by winning his first five decisions. However, he has stumbled of late and has lost his last two starts, including Friday's 8-2 setback at the hands of the Chicago White Sox.

In that contest, Silva gave up six runs - four earned - on 10 hits over just four innings to fall to 5-2 on the season and raised his ERA to 4.39.

Tampa Bay will counter with former No. 1 pick Jason Standridge, who will be making his first start of this season. Standridge has appeared in just one game this season and tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief in that outing. Before that, he spent 30 days in Montgomery and Durham rehabbing his right shoulder after surgery last September.

The 25-year-old right-hander will be making the ninth start of his career for the Rays and still is looking for his first victory.

In the middle contest of the set on Wednesday, Jacque Jones doubled home two runs in the fifth inning to give Minnesota the lead and the Twins held on for a 4-2 victory.

Lew Ford went 3-for-3 with a pair of walks and scored twice for the Twins, who won for just the second time in six games.

Seth Greisinger (2-3) threw five innings for the win. Greisinger was charged with two runs on six hits. Four relievers combined for four scoreless innings to preserve the win.

Jose Cruz drove in both runs for the Devil Rays, who had their five-game winning streak snapped.

The Twins should get an added boost today with the return of third baseman Corey Koskie, who has been sidelined for the past two weeks with a strained sternum.

Minnesota has won 12 of its last 13 against the Devil Rays.

ANAHEIM ANGELS (29-17) AT TORONTO BLUE JAYS (19-27), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Anaheim - Jarrod Washburn (7-1, 4.61) Toronto - Roy Halladay (4-4, 4.02)

(Sports Network) - Jarrod Washburn tries to become the majors' first eight- game winner this evening, as the Anaheim Angels attempt to salvage the finale of their three-game set with the Toronto Blue Jays at SkyDome.

Houston's Roger Clemens, Cincinnati's Paul Wilson and Texas' Kenny Rogers are all tied with Washburn with seven wins, but none will be on the hill tonight.

Washburn, 7-1 on the year with a 4.61 earned run average, has won his last six decisions, but did not receive one in his last trip to the hill on Friday against the Baltimore Orioles.

In that contest, the 29-year-old lefthander allowed three runs on nine hits over 6 2/3 frames, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 5-3 win.

Washburn, who won just 10 games last season, is 1-3 lifetime against the Blue Jays with a 4.13 ERA in four starts.

Toronto's hopes will ride on the shoulders of reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay, who is 3-1 in his last six starts and has allowed three runs or less four times during that stretch.

Halladay, who is 4-4 on the year with a 4.02 ERA, did not receive a decision in his last outing against the Boston Red Sox on Friday, as he yielded five runs and seven hits over six frames in the Jays' 11-5 loss.

The 27-year-old righty has faced the Angels six times and is 2-3 against them with a 7.75 ERA.

In the middle contest of the set on Wednesday, Gregg Zaun's RBI single in the ninth inning capped a two-run rally, as Toronto came from behind to beat Anaheim for the second straight game, winning 6-5.

Reed Johnson sparked the ninth inning rally with a one-out bunt single and, after Frank Menechino stroked a base hit to right, scored on Vernon Wells' single to left-center field.

Carlos Delgado was intentionally walked after that, and Zaun bounced a grounder over the head of Anaheim shortstop David Eckstein to score Menechino with the winning run.

The Blue Jays, who had lost four in a row before winning the first two games of this series, won the opener of this series on Monday with an identical score after Anaheim botched a rundown in the 10th inning.

Terry Adams picked up the win for Toronto in two relief innings. Adams (4-3) yielded just one hit and struck out a batter.

Wells belted a solo homer in the win, extending his hitting streak to a league-high 17 games,

Anaheim starter Bartolo Colon was set to take the win until Troy Percival (2-1) blew his fourth save in the ninth. Colon fanned seven in 6 2/3 innings, surrendering four runs on seven hits and three walks.

A win today by the Blue Jays would give them their first three-game sweep over Anaheim since May 2-4 of last season.

The Blue Jays took eight of 10 meetings with Anaheim last season, but hold just a slight 15-14 edge in the last 29 meetings since the start of the 2001 campaign.

NEW YORK YANKEES (27-18) AT BALTIMORE ORIOLES (20-22), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: New York - Jose Contreras (1-2, 7.56) Baltimore - Sidney Ponson (3-4, 5.40)

(Sports Network) - Jose Contreras hopes to follow up a solid effort in his last outing this evening when the New York Yankees attempt to complete a three-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.

Contreras started the season as the Yanks' fourth starter, but was 1-2 with a lofty 9.47 earned run average through his first five appearances. He was then shipped to Single-A Tampa to work on his mechanics with organizational pitching guru Billy Connors, before starting a few games for Triple-A Columbus.

The Cuban righthander returned to the rotation for the Yanks on Saturday and turned in his finest performance of the season, as he limited the Texas Rangers to just one run and three hits over six frames. He also fanned seven and walked a pair, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 4-3 loss.

Contreras has faced the Orioles twice in his two-year career, one start, and is 1-0 against them, without allowing a run in nine innings of action.

Baltimore will counter with ace Sidney Ponson, who is just 1-4 over his last six starts. On Saturday against the Anaheim Angels, Ponson absorbed the loss, as he allowed three runs and nine hits over eight frames and fell to 3-4 on the year, while raising his ERA to 5.40.

Ponson is 3-8 lifetime against the Yankees with a 4.62 ERA in 19 games, 18 of which have been starts.

In the second game of the set on Wednesday, Gary Sheffield went 4-for-5 with a homer and a season-high six RBI to lead the Yankees to a 12-9 win. Kenny Lofton and Derek Jeter added three hits apiece for New York, which has won three straight including the first two of this three-game set. Tony Clark homered and drove in two runs, as New York has won five of seven.

Trailing 9-7, the Yankees took the lead for good in the seventh. Hideki Matsui began the five-run inning with a lead-off homer. Ruben Sierra followed with a single and later scored on Enrique Wilson's base hit. Wilson then scored on Bernie Williams' pinch-hit single and Williams came around with Jeter on Sheffield's single to right.

Tanyon Sturtze (1-0) got his first win with the Yankees, hurling one-third of an inning in relief. Mariano Rivera worked the ninth for his 16th save of the season and moved within one of 300 for his career.

A win tonight would give New York its first sweep of the O's since taking a four-game series in Baltimore from August 14-17 of last season. Their last three-game sweep came during the 2002 campaign when the Yankees turned the trick in Camden Yards from September 27-29.

B.J. Ryan (1-2) was hit with the loss, allowing three runs and four hits in one inning of work.

B.J. Surhoff had a three-run homer and Melvin Mora went yard and drove in two runs for the Orioles, who have dropped a season-worst six straight games.

Alex Rodriguez, who walked three times last night, has reached base safely in a major league season-high 34 straight games.

New York, which is in the midst of a season-long 12-game road trip, is 14-11 away from home this season, while Baltimore is 12-11 at home this season.

Last year, the Yankees were 13-6 against the O's and have won 41 of the 58 matchups since the start of the 2001 campaign. New York, which won seven of nine last season in Baltimore, has also posted a 23-7 mark in its last 30 trips to Camden Yards.

OAKLAND ATHLETICS (25-20) AT BOSTON RED SOX (29-17), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Oakland - Mark Mulder (5-2, 2.98) Boston - Bronson Arroyo (2-1, 4.10)

(Sports Network) - Mark Mulder tries for his fourth complete-game victory this evening, as the Oakland Athletics attempt to salvage the finale of their three-game series with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Mulder has been sensational over his last three starts and is coming off a brilliant effort against the Kansas City Royals on Friday. In that outing, the 26-year-old hurler tossed a three-hit shutout and struck out six without walking a batter to improve to 5-2 on the year, while lowering his earned run average to 2.98.

Over his last three starts, Mulder has allowed just four earned runs on 13 hits over 27 innings,

Mulder, who is trying to become the first Oakland pitcher to throw four consecutive complete games since Steve McCatty did so in 1981, is 3-2 lifetime against the Red Sox with a 3.50 ERA in seven games.

Heading to the hill tonight for the Red Sox will be righthander Bronson Arroyo, who is 2-1 on the year with a 4.10 earned run average. In his last outing on Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays, the 27-year-old hurler allowed five runs and seven hits over six innings, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 11-5 win.

Arroyo has never faced the A's.

In the middle contest of the set on Wednesday, Jason Varitek hit a three-run homer and ****** Damon scored a pair of runs to lead Boston to a 9-6 victory. Kevin Youkilis and Mark Bellhorn each had an RBI and scored a run for the Red Sox, who have won five straight, seven of their last eight and are a season- best 12 games above .500.

Derek Lowe (4-4) picked up the victory despite allowing five runs on nine hits in six innings of work. Former A's reliever Keith Foulke threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his 10th save in as many opportunities for the Red Sox.

Eric Chavez hit a two-run homer and Eric Byrnes went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI and a run for Oakland, which has lost the first two games of the series on the heels of a five-game winning streak.

Oakland starter Mark Redman (3-3) was saddled with the loss and was charged with nine runs - five earned - on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

A win tonight by Boston would give it its first three-game sweep of the A's since turning the trick from May 7-9 during the 2002 campaign.

The Red Sox, who are in the midst of a 10-game homestand, are 16-6 at home this season, while Oakland has posted a 13-11 mark away from the Bay Area this year.

Last year, Oakland won four of the seven regular season matchups and was 2-1 in Beantown.

        SEATTLE MARINERS (17-28) AT CLEVELAND INDIANS (18-26), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Seattle - Gil Meche (1-4, 5.68) Cleveland - Jake Westbrook (3-2, 3.02)

(Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners try for their first sweep of the season this evening when they conclude their three-game series with the Cleveland Indians at Jacobs Field.

In the middle contest of the set on Wednesday, Jamie Moyer tossed seven strong innings and Ichiro Suzuki posted four hits and two runs batted in, as Seattle held off a late rally to claim a 7-3 victory.

Moyer (3-2) allowed just one run and four hits with five strikeouts for the Mariners, who have won three in a row and will be attempting their first sweep in Cleveland since May 14-16, 1991.

Casey Blake, Victor Martinez and Travis Hafner all hit solo homers for Cleveland, which has now dropped seven straight.

C.C. Sabathia (2-3) suffered the loss after permitting six runs on 11 hits through 6 2/3 innings. He also fanned five and issued one walk.

Getting the call tonight for the Mariners will be righthander Gil Meche, who has dropped his last two decisions and is just 1-4 on the year with a 5.68 earned run average. In his last outing on Friday against the Detroit Tigers, Meche absorbed the loss, as he surrendered four runs on five hits over six frames

The 25-year-old hurler has started three games against the Indians in his career and is 1-2 against them with a 1.83 ERA.

Cleveland will counter with righthander Jake Westbrook, who is 3-2 on the season with a 3.02 ERA. He is coming off a loss in his last trip to the hill, though, as he suffered the loss against the lowly Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Saturday. In the setback, Westbrook yielded five runs, just one of which was earned, on five hits in 7 2/3 frames.

Westbrook is 2-2 lifetime against the Mariners with a 12.42 ERA in five games - three starts.

Suzuki is hitting .410 in the month of May and has reached base safely in every game this month and in 24 straight overall. He has also driven in 10 runs in May.

Martinez has also been hot for the Indians and has three home runs and 14 RBI over his last 10 games.

Seattle is 8-15 away from home this season, while the Indians have posted a 12-11 mark at home.

Last season, Seattle captured six of its nine matchups with the Indians and is 17-8 against them since the start of the 2001 campaign. The M's are also 9-6 in Cleveland over that same span, splitting their six matchups there last season.

TEXAS RANGERS (26-19) AT CHICAGO WHITE SOX (26-19), 8:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Texas - Ryan Drese (2-1, 2.92) Chicago - Mark Buehrle (4-1, 3.84)

(Sports Network) - Chicago White Sox lefthander Mark Buehrle tries to win his fourth straight start and remain perfect against the Texas Rangers as the two teams battle in the rubber match of a three-game series tonight from U.S. Cellular Field.

Buehrle is unbeaten (3-0) over his last six starts and the White Sox have won all of those outings. He has received a ton of offensive support in the last three contests as the White Sox have outscored their opponents 34-2. Buehrle threw seven innings in an 8-2 win at Minnesota last Friday. He has allowed just two runs in his last 20 2/3 innings and hasn't lost since April 20 to the New York Yankees.

Buehrle has faced the Rangers seven times in his career, including four starts, and is 4-0 with a 3.34 ERA against them.

Last night, Esteban Loaiza allowed two hits over eight solid innings to lead the White Sox to a 4-0 win. Loaiza walked two and struck out nine to win his second straight start. He also fanned Alfonso Soriano in the fourth inning for his 1,000th career strikeout.

Miguel Olivo and Frank Thomas each drilled solo homers, while Carlos Lee added a two-run single in the first inning. All of Chicago's runs came in the first three innings, as the White Sox won for the sixth time in eight games.

The White Sox enter tonight's action tied with Minnesota for first place in the AL Central. The Twins play at Tampa Bay this afternoon.

Michael Young had two hits for Texas, which has lost two of three.

Chan Ho Park had been scheduled to start the game, but instead was placed on the 15-day disabled list earlier Wednesday. Park is experiencing soreness in his lower back. Joaquin Benoit took Park's place in the rotation and suffered the loss. Benoit (2-2) yielded four runs on six hits to go along with five strikeouts in four innings.

Ryan Drese will be on the mound tonight for the Rangers. The righthander is winless (0-1) in his last three appearances and he's coming off a no-decision to the Yankees on Saturday when he allowed seven hits and three runs in eight innings. Texas won the game on Rod Barajas' homer in the bottom of the ninth. The Rangers are 5-1 in Drese's last six outings.

Drese is 2-1 with a 4.15 ERA in four appearances (3 starts) over his career against the White Sox.

Thomas has 438 career doubles and needs three to break Luke Appling?s club record of 440.

Lee has a 13-game hitting streak, two shy of his career-high set from August 23 - September 6, 1999.

White Sox right fielder Magglio Ordonez strained his left calf in the seventh inning of Tuesday's game and didn't play last night. He likely won't start this evening, but could pinch-hit.

Chicago has beaten Texas in four of the last six meetings. The White Sox have won 13 of the last 17 matchups between the two teams in the Windy City. The Sox have not had a losing record at home versus Texas since 1997 (2-4). This is the final encounter between the teams at U.S. Cellular Field this season.

          FLORIDA MARLINS (26-20) AT CINCINNATI REDS (27-19), 12:35 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Florida - Brad Penny (5-2, 2.10) Cincinnati - Aaron Harang (4-1, 4.83)

(Sports Network) - With their season-best seven-game winning streak behind them, the Cincinnati Reds will look to regroup and pick up the series victory over the Florida Marlins at Great American Ball Park this afternoon.

Florida put a stop to the Reds' streak Wednesday, as Tommy Phelps shut them down in a 3-0 win. Phelps allowed just one hit in seven innings of work en route to the victory.

Phelps (1-0) earned the win in his first start of the season after 14 relief appearances. The Marlins hurler struck out two and walked a pair, while retiring the first 11 batters he faced. Following a Sean Casey double, he retired the final 10 batters he faced.

Ironically, Phelps made his first career start at Great American Ball Park on May 23, 2003. In that game, Phelps shut out the Reds for 8 1/3 innings to earn his first major league victory.

Matt Perisho and Armando Benitez combined to no-hit the Reds over the final two innings to close out the win. Benitez recorded the final four outs to nail down his 17th save of the season. It also marked the eighth straight appearance for Benitez in which he has not allowed a hit.

Hee Seop Choi homered for Florida, while Miguel Cabrera and Mike Redmond registered two hits apiece in the win. Cabrera also scored a pair of runs in the contest.

With the win, the Marlins remained percentage points behind Philadelphia for first place in the NL East. The Phillies downed the New York Mets on Wednesday evening.

Florida will send 26-year-old righthander Brad Penny to the hill today. Penny has won five of his last six decisions, including back-to-back wins. Last time on the hill, Penny limited Arizona to five hits and a run over six innings of action. The Broken Arrow, OK native struck out six and walked two in the winning effort.

Penny has appeared in four career games against the Reds, registering a 1-2 mark with a 4.38 ERA.

Cincinnati will have 26-year-old righthander Aaron Harang on the mound this afternoon. Harang is 2-0 over his last four starts, including a no-decision against Houston last Saturday. The twirler allowed seven hits and four runs over five innings, while fanning three and walking two.

Harang, a former Oakland Athletic, has never faced the Marlins in his career.

Reds starter Todd Van Poppel (2-2) did a nice job, but suffered the loss Wednesday. Van Poppel allowed just two runs on six hits over seven innings. It was the hurler's first loss in four starts since joining the rotation.

Casey's double was the lone hit for the Reds. It marked his 17th two-base hit of the year. The Reds were held to one hit for the first time since Sept. 26, 2001, when Philadelphia's Randy Wolf beat them 8-0.

Barry Larkin is just one extra-base hit short of becoming the third Reds player to get 700. Pete Rose holds the team record with 868, and ****** Bench had 794.

The Reds were trying for their first eight-game win streak since taking 10 in a row, June 21 - July 1, 1999.

Cincinnati lost for just the eighth time in 24 home games this season (16-. The Reds also fell to 8-6 against the Marlins since the start of the 2002 campaign.

Cincinnati has posted an impressive 16-8 home mark this season, while the Marlins are 13-11 on the road.

LOS ANGELES DODGERS (24-20) AT MILWAUKEE BREWERS (23-21), 1:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Los Angeles - Jeff Weaver (3-5, 4.92) Milwaukee - Ben Sheets (4-3, 2.86)

(Sports Network) - Despite losing 10 of their last 12 games, the Dodgers have been in or shared first place in the NL West every day since April 14. Los Angeles plays the rubber match of a three-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers this afternoon at Miller Park.

Jim Tracy's squad is currently percentage points ahead of the San Diego Padres in the division heading into this afternoon's action.

Last night, Keith Ginter laid down a sacrifice bunt and Geoff Jenkins scored on an Adrian Beltre throwing error on the play to lift Milwaukee to a 2-1 win in 12 innings. Jenkins finished the game by going 2-for-4.

Trent Durrington homered for Milwaukee, which snapped a six-game home losing streak to Los Angeles. Brewers manager Ned Yost was ejected in the first inning for arguing a close play at first base.

Juan Encarnacion belted a homer for the Dodgers.

Righthander Jeff Weaver will head to the mound today for the Dodgers. He won his last start, throwing seven-plus innings at Atlanta last Saturday. In that game, Weaver surrendered six hits and three runs, while tallying a season-high nine strikeouts against just one walk. He is 1-0 with a 9.00 ERA in two career outings against Milwaukee.

Ben Sheets gets the start this afternoon for the Brewers. The righthander followed up his franchise-record 18 strikeout performance on May 16 versus Atlanta with a loss last Saturday at Pittsburgh. In that game, Sheets gave up eight hits and three runs -- two earned -- in seven innings. He holds a lifetime 1-3 mark with a 3.57 ERA in five games versus the Dodgers.

Los Angeles is 15-5 versus the Brewers since the start of the 2001 season.

PITTSBURGH PIRATES (20-21) AT ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (23-22), 1:10 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Pittsburgh - Ryan Vogelsong (1-3, 7.07) St. Louis - Jeff Suppan (3-4, 3.75)

(Sports Network) - St. Louis righthander Jeff Suppan faces his former team for the first time since being traded last year, as the Cardinals close a rain-shortened two-game series versus the Pittsburgh Pirates this afternoon at Busch Stadium.

Suppan went 10-7 in 21 games for the Pirates last season before being dealt to the Boston Red Sox on July 31, at the non-waiver trading deadline. He then inked a two-year, $6 million deal with the Cardinals in the offseason.

Suppan pitched six scoreless innings in a combined shutout last Wednesday versus the Mets at Shea Stadium, allowing just four hits in the no-decision as the Cardinals won 1-0. He is 1-1 with a 3.18 ERA in five career starts against the Pirates.

Additionally, Suppan will try for his first home victory this year as he's 0-4 with a 5.64 ERA at Busch Stadium.

Righthander Ryan Vogelsong won his first start of the season, holding Philadelphia to one run over seven innings on April 8. He hasn't won since, but will take the mound today for Pittsburgh. Vogelsong is 0-3 in his last seven starts and has no-decisions in each of his last four outings.

Vogelsong faced San Diego last Thursday and was battered for six hits, seven runs and four walks in four-plus innings. Incredibly, the Pirates rallied to win that game 9-7. This will be his first career outing versus St. Louis.

Last night, Daryle Ward hit for the cycle and tied a career-high with six RBI to lead the Pirates to an 11-8 win. Ward doubled in the first, tripled in the fourth, homered in the fifth and singled in the ninth to turn the trick. Ward joined his father, Gary, who hit for the cycle back on September 18, 1980.

Jason Kendall was the last Pirate to hit for the cycle, as he did it versus the Cardinals back on May 19, 2000. It was the 23rd time a Pirate has hit for the cycle.

Jack Wilson went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI for the Pirates, who have won three of their last four games overall. Kendall stroked three hits to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, while Bobby Hill and Jose Castillo each banged out a pair of hits.

With a win this afternoon, the Pirates would have a .500 record this late in the season for the first time since September 1, 1999 when they were 67-67.

Jim Edmonds pounded out three hits, including a homer last night for the Cardinals, who have lost three straight. Edgar Renteria also had three hits and scored three times in the losing effort.

Pittsburgh closer Jose Mesa has saved all 13 of his chances this year and he has been scored upon in just one of his first 19 outings. The club record for most consecutive saves in one season without a blown save is 16, accomplished twice by Mike Williams (April 7-June 28, 2001 and June 25-August 18, 2002).

The Cardinals have won 18 of the last 27 meetings.

SAN DIEGO PADRES (25-21) AT COLORADO ROCKIES (18-27), 3:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: San Diego - Justin Germano (1-0, 7.20) Colorado - Aaron Cook (0-0, 7.36)

(Sports Network) - Rookie San Diego hurler Justin Germano will aim to stay unbeaten tonight, when he leads the Padres against the Colorado Rockies in the rubber match of their three-game set.

Germano survived a tough initial major league outing to get a win last week, as he allowed five hits and four runs over five innings against Philadelphia. The 21-year-old righthander struck out five and walked four in the eventual 9-6 victory.

Germano was supposed to be returned to Triple-A Portland quickly, but considering the wealth of injuries on the San Diego pitching staff he could be up for a while. Sterling Hitchcock, David Wells, and Jake Peavy are all on the DL.

Colorado will pin its hopes on 25-year-old righthander Aaron Cook this afternoon. Cook has made a pair of starts without a decision this season, including a fruitless outing versus the New York Mets last Saturday. The twirler surrendered five hits and three runs over five innings, while fanning four and walking one.

Cook has gone to the hill five times in his career against San Diego, going 2-2 with a 4.34 ERA.

The Rockies evened the series Wednesday, posting a 13-6 victory. Vinny Castilla hit two homers and finished with four RBI to pace Colorado to the win. Castilla also recorded his 24th multi-homer game in a Rockies uniform, surpassing Larry Walker for the franchise record.

Matt Holliday added a two-run homer and Mark Sweeney drove in three runs for the Rockies, who snapped a season-long six-game losing streak.

Jason Jennings (3-5) earned the win after yielding three runs, nine hits and two walks, while striking out five in six frames.

Colorado first baseman Todd Helton missed his fifth straight start with a strained oblique muscle and he is not expected to start until at least Friday's contest at San Francisco.

San Diego starter Adam Eaton (1-5) suffered the loss after getting tagged with eight runs, seven of which were earned, on 10 hits and two walks.

Phil Nevin drove in three runs on three hits for the Padres, who captured the opener of this three-game set on Tuesday. Nevin has 54 RBI against the Rockies in his career.

This is the first series between these teams this season. Colorado is 24-16 over the last two seasons against San Diego, including a 15-6 mark at Coors Field.

San Diego is 12-12 on the road this season, while Colorado owns an 12-12 record at home.

          ATLANTA BRAVES (22-23) AT PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (25-19), 7:05 P.M.

Probable Starting Pitchers: Atlanta - Jaret Wright (2-5, 4.25) Philadelphia - Kevin Millwood (4-2, 4.29)

(Sports Network) - Philadelphia righthander Kevin Millwood tries to beat his former team for the first time tonight as the Phillies open a four-game series versus the Atlanta Braves at Citizens Bank Park.

Millwood, who pitched the first six years of his career (1997-2002) with the Braves, has dropped all four of his career starts versus Atlanta and has a 7.77 ERA.

On a positive note, Millwood is unbeaten in his last seven outings overall, going 4-0 in that stretch. His last defeat came April 11 at Florida. His last two appearances have resulted in no-decisions, most recently against San Diego last Friday when he surrendered seven hits and four runs in six innings.

The Phillies come into tonight's game in a virtual tie for first place in the NL East, percentage points ahead of the Florida Marlins. Larry Bowa's club just split a two-game series versus the New York Mets at Shea Stadium.

Last night, Jim Thome slapped the go-ahead two-run double down the right field line to highlight a six-run seventh inning, as the Phillies rallied for a 7-4 victory. Bobby Abreu had two hits and scored twice, while Doug Glanville went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Mike Lieberthal also drove in two runs for Philadelphia, which took advantage of a huge error by Mets first baseman Mike Piazza in the seventh and won for the sixth time in eight games.

Piazza tried to start a double play, but his throw to second base was high and the ball sailed into left field, allowing Jason Michaels to score the tying run.

The Braves won the rubber match of their three-game series in Montreal last night, taking the finale, 6-1. Russ Ortiz surrendered just five hits in his first complete game of the season, retiring 17 straight batters to end the game.

Rafael Furcal and Mark DeRosa belted solo homers for the Braves, who won for the third time in four games. Furcal was 3-for-4 with a walk and three runs scored.

Braves manager Bobby Cox was ejected by home plate umpire Bill Welke after he called a third strike on Andruw Jones to end the top of the third inning with Atlanta leaving the bases loaded.

Jaret Wright will get the start tonight for the Braves, as he hopes to snap a four-start losing streak. The righthander hasn't received much offensive support in that span as his team has scored just six runs with four of them coming in his most recent outing, a 7-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday. In that game, Wright allowed eight hits and five runs in 4 1/3 innings.

This will be Wright's seventh career appearance, but first start versus the Phillies.

The Phillies have won five of their last six home games, while the Braves have captured five of their last seven on the road.

This marks the first meeting between the Braves and Phillies this season. The NL East rivals will play a four-game series at Atlanta next weekend. The Phillies went 10-9 last year versus Atlanta for their first season series win over the Braves since 1991.

(Sports Network) - The red hot San Francisco Giants will shoot for their sixth straight win and second consecutive sweep tonight, when they battle the reeling Arizona Diamondbacks in the finale of their three-game set at SBC Park.

San Francisco has won three consecutive series for the first time this season after registering a 4-3 win on Wednesday. Pedro Feliz stroked a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Giants to the win. Feliz ended 2-for-4 with the two RBI and a run scored for the Giants.

Barry Bonds belted career homer number 670 in the victory and finished 1- for-3 with a walk.

Felix Rodriguez (2-3) earned the win with one inning of scoreless relief. Kirk Rueter started for San Francisco and allowed three runs on 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.

Closer Matt Herges twirled a 1-2-3 ninth for his 14th save of the campaign. In its last 11 innings, the bullpen has allowed just one earned run and amassed three saves.

The Giants will have 31-year-old righthander Dustin Hermanson on the mound tonight. Hermanson is 0-2 over his last four starts, including back-to-back no-decisions. Hermanson tossed 5 2/3 innings against Chicago last week, surrendering five hits and a run while fanning three and walking one.

Hermanson has been very good against the Diamondbacks in his career, registering a 5-1 mark with a 4.21 ERA in seven games.

Heading to the mound for Arizona this evening will be knuckleballer Steve Sparks. who has dropped three consecutive starts, including an ugly defeat to Florida on Saturday. The veteran was blasted for nine hits and 10 runs over 2 2/3 innings, while walking and fanning two in the loss. Sparks hasn't won since May 4.

Sparks has made two career appearances against the Giants, going 0-1 with a 3.68 ERA in two games.

Arizona reliever Brian Bruney (2-2) suffered the loss Wednesday, as he was charged with two runs and two walks in just one-third of an inning.

Robby Hammock posted two hits and an RBI for Arizona, which has dropped six of seven.

The D-Backs are 12 games under .500 for the first time since 1998, their inaugural season.

The Giants have dominated this series since the start of the 2002 campaign, going 27-13, including a 15-6 mark at SBC Park.

San Francisco is 11-14 at home this season, while Arizona is 9-15 on the road.

            **Braves (Wright) at Phillies (Millwood)**

–Las Vegas Sports Consultants has Philadelphia listed as a $1.53 home ‘chalk’ over Atlanta, with the total set at 9 ½. This National League East tilt is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. ET.

–Atlanta’s Jaret Wright (2-5, 4.25 ERA) suffered his fourth consecutive setback with Saturday’s loss to Los Angeles as a $1.40 home favorite, 7-4. The right-hander lasted just 4 1/3 innings, yielding five runs on eight hits (one home run) with three walks and three strikeouts.

–The combined 11 runs toppled the nine-run closing total, ending a string of three straight ‘under’ outings for the 28-year-old.

–Wright, who pitched for Atlanta and San Diego last year, did not start against Philadelphia in 2003.

–Philadelphia hurler Kevin Millwood (4-2, 4.29 ERA) puts his unblemished 2-0 home record and 4.50 ERA on the line in this contest. The 6-foot-4 hurler is off Friday’s no-decision versus San Diego, allowing four runs on seven hits (one home run) with three walks and seven strikeouts over six innings.

–The Phillies eventually prevailed as a $1.51 home ‘chalk,’ 5-4, while the combined nine runs landed directly on the closing total. That marked the second straight game that landed directly on the closing total for the right-hander after seeing a 4-1 ‘over’ streak.

–Millwood was 0-4 against Atlanta last year in four starts, surrendering a combined 19 runs on 35 hits (four home runs) with eight walks and 10 strikeouts over 22 innings. The ‘under’ was 3-1 during those four outings.

            **Diamondbacks (Sparks) at Giants (Hermanson)**

–LVSC opened San Francisco as a $1.55 home favorite over Arizona, with the total listed at nine ‘over’ (minus $1.20). This contest will start at 10:00 p.m. ET.

–Arizona hurler Steve Sparks (1-4, 6.59 ERA) endured his third consecutive setback Saturday against Florida as a $1.80 road underdog, 11-2. The knuckleball pitcher was roughed up for 10 runs on nine hits (one home run) with two walks and two strikeouts over just 2 2/3 innings.

–The combined 13 runs went ‘over’ the eight-run closing total, ending four consecutive ‘under’ outings.

–Sparks did not start against San Francisco last season as a member of the Detroit and Oakland pitching staffs.

–San Francisco sends Dustin Hermanson (1-2, 4.13 ERA) to the hill hoping he can earn his first win in over a month. The right-hander is 0-2 his last four starts after receiving last Thursday’s no-decision against Chicago.

–The former Kent State star yielded one run on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. The Giants eventually triumphed as a $1.70 road underdog, 5-3. The combined eight runs went ‘under’ the 9 1/2-run closing total, helping the ‘under’ improve to 5-1 when the 31-year-old is pitching.

–Hermanson did not start against Arizona last year as a member of the Giants and St. Louis Cardinals.

**Athletics (Mulder) at Red Sox (Arroyo)**

–LVSC installed Oakland as a slight $1.08 road ‘chalk’ over Boston, with the total set at nine. This American League contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. ET.

–Oakland’s Mark Mulder (5-2, 2.98 ERA) notched his third consecutive victory compliments of Friday’s triumph over Kansas City as a $2.00 home favorite, 7-0. The southpaw went the complete-game route on three hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

–The seven runs failed to topple the nine-run closing total, helping the ‘under’ cash his second straight start.

–Mulder was 0-1 against Boston last year in two regular season starts, allowing a combined eight runs (seven earned) on 15 hits (one home run) with four walks and eight strikeouts over 9 1/3 innings.

–Boston pitcher Bronson Arroyo (1-0, 3.99 ERA) has just one decision in six starts. That trend continued after Friday’s no-decision versus Toronto when he surrendered five runs on seven hits (three home runs) with one walk and two strikeouts over six innings.

–The Red Sox eventually prevailed as a $1.08 home favorite, 11-5. The combined 16 runs eclipsed the 8 1/2-run closing total, ending a string of four consecutive ‘under’ outings for the right-hander.

–Arroyo did not start against Oakland last season.

**Rangers (Drese) at White Sox (Buehrle)**

–LVSC lists Chicago as a $1.53 home favorite over Texas, with the total set at 9 ½ ‘under’ (minus $1.15). This game is scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m. ET.

–Texas sends Ryan Drese (2-1, 3.20 ERA) to the hill hoping he can improve his 0-1 road record and 3.79 ERA. The 6-foot-3 hurler is off Saturday’s no-decision against New York after yielding three runs on seven hits (two home runs) with no walks and three strikeouts over eight innings.

–The Rangers eventually prevailed as a $1.15 home underdog, 4-3. The combined seven runs went ‘under’ the 11 1/2-run closing total, helping the ‘under’ improve to 4-0-1 when he is on the hill.

–Drese did not start against the White Sox last season.

–Chicago’s Mark Buehrle (4-1, 3.84 ERA) ran his present winning streak to three games after dumping Minnesota Friday as a $1.28 road favorite, 8-2. The five-year veteran went seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits (one home run) with two walks and eight strikeouts.

–The combined 10 runs eclipsed the nine-run closing total, helping the ‘over’ improve to 8-1-1 his 10 starts.

–Buehrle beat Texas last year as a $1.75 home ‘chalk,’ 13-2, surrendering one unearned run on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts over six innings. The combined 15 runs easily toppled the 9 1/2-run closing total.
