    Five plays for Tuesday:

    STL (CARPENTER) +100 over Phi (Myers) - 1 UNIT - 4:05pm Pacific
Here we have a matchup of starters heading in opposite directions. Carpenter has been steadily improving, and has put together back-to-back quality starts. He's been able to keep the ball down, and the phenomenal infield defense behind him hasn't let him down. Myers has been declining and has been demoted to the fifth starter's spot. Myers' biggest problem so far is his third time through the order. St. Louis just faced him five days ago, so they should still be familiar with him and hopefully can get to his the first time through the order. Edge also goes to St. Louis' offense.

    MON (VARGAS) -101 over Col (Jennings) - 1 UNIT - 4:05pm Pacific
There was a study done by the Elias Sports Bureau in the early 1990s about the "hangover effect" that the Denver Nuggets and Utah Jazz experienced at the start of road trips. The gist of the study concluded that both teams, due to the high home altitude they played in, needed an adjustment period before they were able to perform well on the road. I referenced the last three years of inital road games (I narrowed it down to the first three road games of a road trip) for the Rockies, and just like their NBA counterparts, it seems like the Rockies also experienced a hangover effect. Unfortunately, I can't find my records to back this up (I did it before the season started and probably lost it), so I'll have to compile it again later. I do know, however, that in 2003, their initial road record was disproportionately bad, even when compared to their horrible overall road record. In 2002, they had a worse overall road record than their initial road record, but it was still very bad. Colorado opens up a road trip at Montreal, and at a good price, so I'll take the Expos here, and will probably blindly take them the rest of the series.

    SD (EATON) +111 over Atl (Ortiz) - 1 UNIT - 4:35pm Pacific
I like San Diego's lineup, and think they can perform really well outside of pitcher friendly Petco. Ortiz has been up and down, and is very hittable right now. Eaton is very solid, although he has had a couple of shaky outings lately. Although they haven't really shown it, the Padres have a pretty solid bullpen and should provide Eaton with adequate relief.

    CHW (LOAIZA) -119 over Bal (DuBose) - 1 UNIT - 4:05pm Pacific
The White Sox have been incredible against lefties this year: .421 OBP, .637 SLG. DuBose has been super in his last three starts, but he won't keep that up all year, and the Sox can probably break him off in this one. Loaiza isn't as dominant as last year, but he should receive enough run support in this one. This game may be a good candidate for a 5 inning bet as well.

    MIN (LOHSE) +142 over Sea (Moyer) - 1 UNIT - 7:05pm Pacific
The Minnesota bats are in a funk right now, but Moyer is still off, and I think this line is way too high. Although Moyer only gave up 1 ER in his last start, he still walked four and threw only 60 of his 110 pitches for strikes. The Minnesota hitters as a whole have great eyes and should have success getting on base against Moyer. Safeco should benefit Lohse, as he's a flyball pitcher.

      DR BOB

      Tuesday NBA Analysis
      MIAMI (-5) 88 New Orleans 83
The Hornets are 5-1 ATS in this series, including 2-1 ATS here in Miami, but the Heat are still 25-10 ATS as a favorite this season (31-4 straight up). My ratings favor Miami by 4 ½ points and their positive record as a favorite is worth about ½ a point. So, I’ll call for a 5 point Heat win and advise staying away from this game.

      MINNESOTA (-5 ½) 99 Sacramento 93
My ratings favor Minnesota by 5 points in this game (they’re not as good without Wally Szczerbiak), but home teams have an edge in game 1 of a playoff series (110-90-5 ATS since ’91). I’ll call for a 6 point Timberwolves’ victory and suggest passing on this game too.
